Assassin's Creed Origins Review - IGN

An expansive RPG-style dive into ancient Egypt, with tense combat and tons of variety.

Razzer2783d ago

Nice! Finally another great AC game!

UltraNova2783d ago

Yeah its looking good on all fronts...but I m just not ready for another grindy open world game that pretty much shares 90% of the same recipe with the last game in the series.

_LarZen_2783d ago (Edited 2783d ago )

Totally understandable. Big open world games can get fatiguing if you play allot of them. I’ve put some on hold as I was getting ready for this one :)

pinkcrocodile752783d ago

I understand where you are coming from. This is exactly why I don't want to play Destiny 2. My lads have been playing it and they say it's a lot of the same.

I think that taking a year off to ensure that the next AC game has a complete overhaul in areas that needed it is the reason I've got this arriving via amazon tomorrow.

UltraNova2783d ago

@both above

You both have valid reasons to get Origins I get it but I'm just to tired of these kind of games. I need something new and thats why I'm getting a psvr and a shit load of games to go with it for this holiday season.

RommyReigns2783d ago (Edited 2783d ago )

I'm saving my open world fix for Horizon Frozen Wilds releasing on Xbox One X day (and virtually guaranteed to be far superior to anything that overrated lame and boring box will ever pump out).

bluefox7552783d ago (Edited 2783d ago )

That's my problem with it. It looks fantastic, the new setting is great, but it's hampered by all of the same problems as the previous games, which leads to great deals of boredom and repetition. I've heard the story is one of the weaker ones in the series as well. Also, screw them for adding what is effectively loot boxes.

pinkcrocodile752782d ago

@UltraNova - I get what you mean about getting PSVR, it is something new and I know that you will love it.

The only thing I would say about that is that I wouldn't use the word "Game" to describe VR titles. I would use the word experience as while they are very short in length they are something else.

One bit of advice, avoid RIGS and DRiveclub VR, they'll probably make you spew like Linda Blair in the Exorcist. Not to mention what she did with that crucifix lol.

The power of Christ Compels you.

UltraNova2782d ago

@pinkcro

Thanks for the advice but fortunately for me I'm one of those lucky people who dont get affected by VR. I've tried Driveclub VR for 15 mins and it didnt affect me. I'm getting Farpoint, RE7, Superhot VR and that worlds demo that comes with the bundle for starters!

I, too, really enjoyed Syndicate, but all signs are pointing to me liking Origins even more.

yeahokwhatever2783d ago

DaNineTwo2783d ago (Edited 2783d ago )

I pre ordered the game, so picking it up tomorrow, with the intention of "saving" it to play on my X, but the game just looks too damn good to wait !

@cupofjoe

What's your agenda? Seriously, the only thing your achieving is showing how much of an a$$ you are.

The 10th Rider2783d ago

Honestly to me it looks like the best Assassin's Creed yet. Here's hoping they give the next one some time as well instead of rushing one out ASAP.

The one thing that rubs me the wrong way here is the mention of it being grindy at times along with the fact that it has microtransactions. I feel like that sort of thing should be highlighted more in the review, though I highly disagree with those that will give it a lowball score to make a statement.

UltraNova2783d ago

Big sites like IGN dont want to bite the hand that feeds them so they will keep letting issues like Gaas slip under the radar, while smaller sites will lean on it simply because controversy directly translates to traffic/money for them.

zaherdab2783d ago

Almost every assassin's creed has been the best yet ... even unity when i played a year after tons of patches was pretty fun but in general i just feel the formula makes things get redundant, hopefully this one improves on it ...

The 10th Rider2783d ago

Yeah, I'm sure after patches Unity was fine. However with the yearly releases things weren't spaced out enough for each game to feel fresh and new. Allowing for two years between the games to really put out something fresh and exciting clearly helped.

MaximusTKG2783d ago

I get the microtransaction concern. However, given the time I've put in with games that have them, with no need or desire to ever do the microtransactions I don't see why its as big of a deal as it has become. After seeing them the first time because they show you where to buy stuff, I've never noticed them after that.

Chexs19902782d ago

The issue isn't exactly that they are there per se. You can have MT's without them intruding on your gameplay.
The big issue and why it's blowing up at this point, is that MT's has become an integral part of AAA game design. As a rule of thumb, the core game will suffer as an effect of that, because the MT systems lies so close to the center of the design taxonomi.
MT's used to be a peripheral option, now it's a center feature :O

I've Been Replaying Assassin's Creed Origins, And It's Reminded Me What Shadows Is Sorely Lacking

It took going back to a much older game to realise just how empty Assassin's Creed Shadows feels.

"I've never thought feudal Japan would be a good Assassin's Creed setting. Give me 1960s southern England with mods and rockers."

Aaaaaaand that's where I stopped reading.

Terry_B14d ago

Never read anything on that website.

chicken_in_the_corn14d ago

I agree with the first part of their statement. Japan is so overused and it wasn't particularly interesting in Shadows. Now that it's been done, they can do something better.

isarai13d ago

Tf? Almost had an aneurysm at the thought of that concept, like what?

And shadows reminds me of something origins is lacking. Virtually every game is lacking something. It is because it is lacking, that it has what it isnt. Funny dichotomy that…

anast14d ago

Origins is a beautiful game made by talented people that got turned into a brutal level-gate fest by the CEOs.

PRIMORDUS14d ago

There are only a few Assassin's Creed games I played. Original, The Ezio Collection, and what I think is probably the best in the series Assassin's Creed Odyssey with the DLC. I'm done with the series, it's the same shit.

isarai13d ago (Edited 13d ago )

Same, enjoyed 1, looooved the ezio trilogy, and 4 was peak, everything after that just sucked. Unity was a great direction but the bugs and how long it took to fix killed it, best parkour system in the series tho

AC Origins is the last great Ubisoft game. Period. This game show how great the Ubisoft story writing once was. Also the meticulous research Ubisoft did in the field of Egyptology. Ubisoft was so pride of their research that it made a separate Touring mode just to showcase all of their study.

10 Video Game Sequels That Saved Their Franchise

Video game sequels like Assassin's Creed Origins, Doom (2016), and Fire Emblem Awakening were just what these franchises needed to be revitalized.

Immagaiden766d ago

Lmao what’s Halo Infinite doing on this list?

Who would ever say Halo Infinite saved the Halo franchise

SullysCigar765d ago

Thought the same - very bizarre!

RE7 though... my God, what a shift over RE6! That franchise was definitely going in the wrong direction, so RE7 was a welcome return to form.

ModsDoBetter765d ago

Resi 6 was and still is the worst entry in the series.
7 was a great turnaround, despite people’s concerned about the switch to FP perspective.

DMC5 definitely helped the franchise after the whole DmC debacle. Whilst it was a decent action game, it was a far cry from the series and the characters we knew.

AC Origins is my favourite in the entire AC series. Despite the switch to a more RPG style of gameplay - the setting, soundtrack, length, etc were all amazing. sadly followed up by the ridiculously long and “more of the same” Odsyssey.

I don’t feel it’s fair to say the franchise slipped with Doom 3, Doom 3 was incredibly atmospheric and took the game in a different direction but there’s no denying Doom (2016) was sensational.

Halo 4 & 5 were disappointing but Halo Infinite definitely didn’t save the franchise? What?

TheEnigma313765d ago (Edited 765d ago )

I'm going to have to go with SMB 3. I was around when SMB 2 first came out and people hated it. 3 is still arguably the best mario game created.

HellspawnPR1981765d ago

"Halo Infinite"? Worse Halo ever. Whoever made this list just lost all credibility.

Hofstaderman765d ago

In future lists of a similar nature I have a suspicion Final Fantasy XVI will feature.
