Many campaign fans were disappointed when episodes from Los Santos never surfaced. Rockstar explains why.
The closing statement gives me a certain sense of optimism: "...for storytelling and a sense of immersion in a world, multiplayer games don’t rival single-player games" Now, given that Red Dead Redemption was ALL about the immersion, I'd be a bit more hopeful that they don't go crazy with multiplayer this time. Plus, the setting/lack of commercialism doesn't lend itself to reams of DLC with trendy clothing and fancy cars. Could just be me being naive though.... here's hoping!
You didn't see the tie-dye cowboy hat and boots?!
Yeah it really increases my hope that Red Dead Redemption 2 will be as good as the first one!
I agree, the only Issue I have with GTAV is that they stopped giving MP DLC to the SP files for about a year now. I dont expect everything to copy over, but Vehicles, Weapons, etc. should be added to BOTH
Rockstar wouldn't be the behemoth it is in the gaming industry if it weren't for Single player games. Among the many things it revolutionized, GTA III bought a whole new level of realism to storytelling in gaming back when it came out.
"As a company, we love single-player more than anything, and believe in it absolutely – for storytelling and a sense of immersion in a world, multiplayer games don’t rival single-player games." No. Just no. I love SP, but if you loved it more than anything else you would have made it. You love the money GTA Online brings you more than anything else, otherwise we would have seen less of that and more of SP DLC.
Bingo! Corporate speak is meaningless without actions behind those words and R*'s actions proved otherwise. It's the sole reason why I'm not pre-ordering RDR2 which is a first from me as I usually pre-order anything R* churns out. Not saying I will boycott it mind you, I just want to see if I will get my money's worth. with the first red dead redemption, I sure did so I shall be judging by that metric.
To be fair, GTA V was still pretty gigantic by SP standards...I still feel like I got my money's worth despite not touching the online component. How no other stories were told in such a beautifully realised world was such a crying shame though. I think it's a safe bet RDR 2's SP will be substantial. But I do agree that it should be a far greater focus than on V.
Speaking of actions behind those words... their games have always delivered great single player. I don't know why you think that's all changing because of no single player DLC for one game. You seriously think they aren't working on a new GTA? Whether it's DLC for V or GTA6, more single player GTA is coming, and you'd be crazy to think they'll phone it in because GTA Online was a success.
So you are inferring that you don't feel you got your money's worth from GTA V? Rockstar appear to be one developer who gets the balance about right.
they could have at least let you buy the MP things in single player. but nooooooooooooo that would negatively impact shark card sales.
This was going to be my exact reply. Thanks for doing it for everyone. It's money. Anything else is a lie.
He sounded pretty reasonable to me. If you can't dedicate the resources to the project (without screwing up other projects) then its not really feasible (simple Project Management logic). The expansions GTAIV had, if they were to implement something similar in V would've taken almost the whole GTAV team to work on for sure. If staff are already working on RDR2 then what he's saying makes sense. RDR2 has probably been in development for 4-5 years by now with a much smaller team working on the GTAV online component. I guess they didn't have the numbers and probably the Housers or whoever is high up didn't feel up to working on multiple projects at once. You act like adding SP dlc is easy peasy when its far from the truth.
I never said SP DLC is easy-peasy, and never implied it to be. But if you claim you love doing SP more than anything else, but you do something else, it's clearly not because you love SP so much. So unless you're lying completely, you do it because the revenue of other projects is greater. I don't contest these matters, and I don't think they should have done SP DLC (although I would have loved it, since I don't care for the MP parts that much), but the claims they make are simply not sound.
GTA5 sold over 80 million units. 80 million. You really think those stupid shark cards are selling so amazingly well that it's not worth it to Rockstar to develop single player content that like GTA4's expansions, could be sold as standalone games? I've paid exactly $0 on shark cards. How much are you guys spending on them to make you think they're selling that well?
In 2016 alone these stupid shark cards sold well enough to make more than 700 million dollars (700.000.000)in revenue!!! https://segmentnext.com/201... Unfortunately there are plenty of people who are willing to spend real money for ingame cash.
That article says "GTA products", so it sounds like the main game which still sells for $40 to $60 is included in that figure. "Net Revenues from GTA products exceeded $700 million over the past 12 months"
I'm not spending anything on them. I have a couple of cousins that play GTA Online weekly, and it's pretty much the only game they play really, and each of them spend at least 200 dollars in the last years, one of them said he probably came close to 500 dollars. Just check the figures below. Online sales in GTA are booming. Sure, it's not the only thing R* sells, and they definitely would make money on SP DLC and new games, even new IPs I bet, but I do believe GTA Online has brings the most profit. The Shark Cards are said to be nearly 100% profit.. " Digitally-delivered net revenue grew 56% to $268.2 million, as compared to $172.1 million in last year’s fiscal first quarter. Recurrent consumer spending (virtual currency, downloadable add-on content and microtransactions) grew 72% year-over-year and accounted for 63% of digitally-delivered net revenue, or 41% of total net revenue. The largest contributors to digitally-delivered net revenue in fiscal first quarter 2018 were Grand Theft Auto Online and Grand Theft Auto V, NBA 2K17, and WWE SuperCard and WWE 2K17. " http://www.businesswire.com...
They're creating a whole new SP game from the ground up (RDR2) instead of making SP DLC for a last gen game. How does that go against their claim that you quoted in your first post?
I find it amazing that after all the work they must have put in creating that three protagonist system that they just abandon it. What a waste of potential..
I would have rather had one protagonist the story could have been better then
There is no wasted potential. They'll probably make another GTA. The last one did okay enough to warrant a sequel.
What gives you the impression they have abandoned it. Not everything that worked well in one game works in others. I liked the focus on one character (OK two if you include the ending) in RDR, but thought the three protagonists in GTA V also worked for telling that story though I never built up the same connection with John Marston. (Hunting animals in the wild on your own for a few weeks would do that).
just say money, don't sit here and treat your audience like idiots . .hell we can look back at articles with some of the voice actors you had them come in and when you saw how big mp got you cancelled them out . .and now you must have a new product coming and you want to bs us so we purchase your product. lmao I'm sorry I didn't actually read the article I should have the gall of these people "The good news for story fans? Rockstar not having the bandwidth for an expanded story campaign in GTA V doesn't mean no Rockstar games will have them going forward. "We would love to do more single-player add-ons for games in the future," sooo basically "nah no gtv v sp expansions but we promise on the next product ;)" but with that recent article of mass effect 3 micro cards getting upwards of 16k purchases . .this is going to be a nasty period of gaming
after finished the story mode i sell it.
I never understood why people felt entitled to additional story mode DLC, you got what you were promised.
I'm not here to have a back and forth just to post a little evidence that's non-debatable and keep it moving http://www.player.one/gta-5... people had the expectation of dlc because of the previous game having stellar add-on story dlc. . .that the company has come out and basically flaunted this bs commitment means even they knew what the expectations were. But a simple google search would have taught you everything you needed to know . . .
Just because it was done in the past does not mean it will be done in the future. Entitlement. And a voice actor making teases is not R* confirming anything.
@generic Allright, I bite: Shut up with the "entitled" "you got what you were promosed" -bullcrap. Still waiting for the: "GTAV Story Mode Updates. For those ready to jump back into the story of Grand Theft Auto V, we have big plans for substantial additions in 2014 continuing Michael, Franklin and Trevor's action, mayhem and unexpected adventures in Southern San Andreas." Source, their own blog, down at the bottom... http://www.rockstargames.co... And that is from their OFFICIAL newsletter to us members !!!! That is what I was promised. But sadly people like yourself started to buy all those goddamn sharkcards and whatnot and they made so much money on their nonsense onlinemode so they actually went out and LIED that they never promised singleplayer DLC, and still you got the proof if you read at the end of that link. People like you are so gullable its not even fun any more tbh.
Responding to your comment below here: Most sold game...also most expensive game to make. Costs money to make money don't forget. Smaller companies make dlc and they can't for GTAV...sure, you're right. Is the quality and scale of these smaller companies dlc that of an open world modern GTA game expansion? I'm not here to protect any company. I'm just trying to provide a level headed response to these negative comments rather than regurgitate outrage that's so present on this site (as you mention THEY are trying to rip you off). Not all companies are a bunch of pigs burning money to light their cigars. They research, plan and think before pursuing a project. They make decisions and changes constantly, sometimes the decision can be to cancel which appears to be what they've done as you said about the newsletter above. It's I.T., you have to be flexible and adapt given the circumstance. If you worked in development perhaps you'd understand better.
That a damn lied. I think 2014 or 2013 Rockstar already confirmed that Single Player DLC was coming but then GTA Online was selling hot cake that Take Two/Rockstar decided that Shark Card and GTA Online would make them more money and quietly stop talking about single player and then denied that they never talk about it before.
Or maybe development started on RDR2 and they decided they didn't have the resources to do both?
You know there are more than 1 Rockstar studio: Rockstar Toronto, Rockstar San Diego, Rockstar North, Rockstar New England, Rockstar London, and more. Each Studio do their own IP. GTA series is handle by Rockstar North and Red Dead series is handle by Rockstar San Diego. So Rockstar don't have excuses for cancelling Story DLC because Online is very successful even though Story DLC was the most ask thing from them.
@Rebel The most sold game like EVER doesn't make them enough money to expand their game ? How the heck can all other smaller companies release DLC but Rockstar can't ? Don't you hear how you sound right now ? If we customers actually came together instead of having people like yourself protecting the gamestudios that just try to rip us, we could have both more singleplayer DLC's >>>AND<<< better online components in our games. See my post above for proof what they promised us when the game released...
Studio size ebbs and flows like the sea my friend. When its high tide and the game is released the size is reduced back to low tide. Perhaps when it got to low tide they decided against SP dlc, not unusual in IT for change, its the nature of the beast. Let's not forget that GTAV is a last gen game and they don't owe you a damn thing. Why continue to support it by implementing SP dlc expansions which may take more time to plan and implement than implementing the online features?
Idk maybe cuz there were 3 fuggin main characters in the main story who kinda had their own stories.
No point blaming Rockstar. It's the people who buy online content that cause the issue. I believe they prefer SP as developers, but it seems as if MP has more money than story dlc, so that's where they go.
I mean well we can blame them somewhat they would make money on sp as well sure we can argue it would cost more but they'd likely would make more than just breaking even so either way it would be profits, they just don't want to spend any money because why put in effort when cash is flowing in? so yes they can share some of the blame along with those who continue to funnel money into mp. And now what they are doing is lying to their audience to get them to purchase their next big thing so they can go around saying "well we didn't expect mp to take off like this it's really been a massive affair and we thank our fans, we can't pinpoint when we will focus on sp again but our commitment to mp development is going full swing"
SP DLC is one purchase. I'm guessing alot of online players make multiple shark card purchases. The money is simply with MP. It's business. It's as simple as that.
"I still consider Niko Bellic's tragic tale of the American dream gone awry to be the studio's best storytelling effort to date." Jesus Christ, not even ten sentences in and I already can't take the writer seriously.
sorry r* you've f'ed up with this and killing Agent, serously losing respect for you as a company, they make games the they delay for years or the kill games or the promise content they kill.
It makes me wonder when will we get a real current gen GTA game.
Money. That's why. Let's not kid ourselves.
Let me give you the quick version: Money, money, shark cards, money, eco system, money, games as a service, money. I may have forgotten a money or two.
IMO this has everything to do with Leslie Benzies getting fired and there was nobody suitable to fill in the void to lead the game forward. He did leave to form his own studio(4 Studios) and took a lot of people with him, including top Audio Engineer and Senior Programmers. If you read past interviews by Leslie and Houser you will find out Leslie was the technical brain while the Houser's wrote the story for the game Red Dead Redemption almost didnt happen if it wasnt for Leslie Benzies, according to the emails related to the lawsuit. GTA 5 ending credits; Producer/ Game Designer: Leslie Benzies Lead Camera Programmer: Colin Entwistle Audio Director: Mathew Smith Rockstar is also lying, they announced the story-dlc themselves and then just stopped saying anything about it.
I always thought the 8th gen version had a lot to do with it and it's confirmed
Yeah, no...Screw this. If they really cared about the fanbase and not the money we would have seen SP expansions a looong time ago. Yet it's all about that Online cash flow. Greedy ****s.
"dedicated to single player?" Really? then what is all this on line garbage? very upset by this.... GTA V got all the good stuff and left me wanting more for my single player experience...I say, if you offer on line players all those add ons, then by Christ sake you BETTER offer it to the single players as well.....gggrrrr!!!!
Max Payne 3 all over again. Rockstar put all their time and resources into a multiplayer component (albeit quite fun) which was practically dead within a couple of months. Glad I didn't purchase the season pass. Not saying say that GTAV and MP3 are anywhere near the same level of popularity in terms of multiplayer popularity. However, Rockstar should have taken a page out of GTAIV and RDR's books. Games like GTAV and MP3 could have benefited greatly from single-player/story dlc expansions.
totally agree ZwVw, I am glad to hear there are people out there like you that "get it".....makes me believe that the single player experience will never die, given that is what made gaming what it is today....all developers better recognize that!
Singleplayer GTA will always beat multiplayer GTA
Bring on those SP games!!!
It's always amazed me that gamers always find a way to be mad. You have a developer that gives you one of the greatest single player games ever made, with tons of content, and tons of free updates to the online component that you don't have to spend a penny on, and they'll soon release what will probably be the 2018 game of the year because of it's single and multiplayer, and gamers will still cry about about how the developer is greedy and making money and accuse them of abandoning single player.
lOl, GTAV was solid all the way around definitely worth the 120$ i spent on it (bought PS3 and PS4 game). I'd buy it again if they made it for VR (not going to happen but that's how much this game is worth to me lol) it's a great solid experience. I loved both components and the shark cards were a brilliant way of allowing us to have FREE DLC and also for them to do their microtransactions. I never bought one, but even when a user did, it didn't affect us in any way really because everything cost millions of dollars on that game and that player is 1 in 70million if he has a tank destroying everyone you can leave and go on about your business lOl. The game is epic and even to this day I find myself engulfed in the world from time to time after not playing it for weeks.
First good news i heard in a long time! Go Rockstar! You can have some multiplayer as a fun distraction but i live and breath for great single player stories!
Pretty pathetic when the talk of late is "commitment to single player". You know these "AAA" companies couldn't care less for single player, when this even needs to be said, as though used for positive PR. I guess when you can't pump single player games for infinite revenue, they just aren't worth making anymore, right? What a pathetic state this hobby and market has reached. What's even more hilariously insulting, is that these a**holes expect that anyone would believe this bulls**t. LOL
More pr rhetoric, PROVE IT!!!
