Microsoft is discontinuing Windows Mixed Reality

The Verge writes: "Windows Mixed Reality served as a portal to games, apps, and other experiences within the VR space. In addition to the Microsoft HoloLens, other companies, including Acer, Dell, Lenovo, Asus, HP, and Samsung, made mixed reality headsets compatible with Microsoft’s platform."

Imagine that.

“Microsoft has been gradually downsizing its VR division. HoloLens boss Alex Kipman left last year over allegations of sexual misconduct, and the company later cut 10,000 jobs, many of which affected the workers behind Microsoft’s mixed reality projects, including the now-discontinued AltspaceVR app.”

It's already dead for all intents and purposes.

ocelot07546d ago

The dell mixed reality was my first pc vr headset and it was brilliant. So good meta, Sony and valve all followed with inside tracking for the controllers.

gold_drake546d ago

i didnt even know they had this to be fair.
according to the Googles, it was released 2017.

never heard of it.

They discontinued something that I didn't even know existed.

Hopefully this is a sign Microsoft will bring VR to the Xbox Series X. There is huge potential with VR on the next Xbox and it would be a shame if Xbox Series X doesn't support it.

ThinkThink1914d ago

As long as it doesn't pull from any of their first parties, I don't see many worrying too much about it.

sampsonon1914d ago

yeah, but Sony can do both at the.... oops! forgot, it's MS.

Kingthrash3601914d ago

It's a flying shame to see xbox gamers hope MS brings a gaming device they are working on to their gaming console....interesting times we live in.

zeuanimals1914d ago

They need to start building teams for this since next-gen is where VR's gonna really start to flourish.

Neonridr1913d ago

@kingthrash360 - PC is a huge VR market, so while many hope for console VR, MS thinks about the other half of the userbase they service.

JackBNimble1913d ago (Edited 1913d ago )

I'm pretty sure flight simulator supports VR , hopefully they can bring that to the sx as well.

He's not wrong. Majority are simply asking for more games before new ventures.

crazyCoconuts1914d ago

in his defense, in this particular case he isn't being hypocritical. he's defended experimenting with VR for the windows platform, and that's what this headset is for as far as we know. and markets can change so strategies can too over time. i don't think xsx is getting VR anytime soon anyway, so no point in getting hopes up

CaptainHenry9161914d ago

Yup I remember him saying this back in November 2019

Unspoken1914d ago

Yep, and it's true and sound at the same time. Good find!

Sitdown1914d ago

Please be specific on how he is a "hypocrete", and make sure you differentiate from his words and the author's assumptions.

alb18991914d ago

But does he always have to say his strategy.....why?

RazzerRedux1914d ago

'Phil Spencer: "Nobody's asking for VR" on Xbox'

This isn't for Xbox.

Gunstar751914d ago

Apart from correcting your spelling, who says this has anything to do with xbox and Phil Spencer?

MS are a huge company, with fingers in many pies. This is nothing to do with xbox.

Wind your neck in

rainslacker1914d ago

They weren't. But there's a whole wide world outside Xbox over at MS, and this collaboration is for PC, where MS is trying to make inroads into the VR market with their DirectX API.

chiefJohn1171913d ago

How is that hypocritical?

1913d ago
Revacci1913d ago

Phil never hand a plan to begin with, has no idea how to do anything revolutionary for the industry and for the most part his statement contradict each other all the time, he speaks like an over glorified clown for the most part.

This dude "scofios" is sending me weird personal messages.

It's just another mixed reality headset. Like Microsoft have been doing with other partners like samsung and hp and dell ect for a few years now.

ToxicSushi1913d ago

Guess some folks forgot about MS Halolens that was released in 2016 for PCs.

FreeFallFrenzy1913d ago

The smartest thing MS could do is partner up with Valve or Oculus or some other VR company and just bring over the games from their platform. It would create another VR market and MS wouldn't really have to invest a ton into it. Doubt it'll happen, but it could be smart for MS to do so. Not much for them to lose really

mandingo1913d ago

I mean does it have potential. Other than resident evil and recently released half life I see no reason to buy it. It still isn’t ready Most games feel like demos and the graphics look weak.

1913d ago
chiefJohn1171913d ago

I hope not. I'd rather them not waste their time on a immature product and take away resources from more important gaming aspects

GamerRN1913d ago

I still think VR will always be a novelty item. Like the track pad of old.

I do enjoy it though

Half-life: Alyx on XSX confirmed?

SpaceRanger1914d ago

That would be awesome! Glad to see so many people interested in VR. This gen really paved the way for it.

alb18991914d ago

Not as it is right now but we can see the potential it has in the future.

ThinkThink1914d ago

It's not that we don't like VR, and speaking for myself only, I just don't want to see MS split off any of their first party teams to make VR games. Maybe they could work with a bunch of 3rd party studios, but MS needs to focus on their 1st party exclusives and not get distracted.

The 10th Rider1914d ago

Judging by sales, neither do Sony or PC fans either.

It's still a niche market and a developing tech, and it will be for at least a few more years. Microsoft wasn't interested in jumping in right away. Sony wanted to get on board and they're one of the leaders in the market. Both positions are respectable.

343_Guilty_Spark1914d ago

Not true. We haven't seen any metabreaking VR game until now.

All the VR games I have played haven't been particularly interesting long enough to keep me playing.

TommyVercetti881914d ago

Just wait when GTA VI gets a exclusive VR camera mode for the PS5 then all the Xbox fans are missing out.

jbull1914d ago

Most gamers I know don't as there isn't many games on VR to be interested about until now with Half Life, I can see that coming to next gen systems VR.

Atticus_finch1914d ago (Edited 1914d ago )

Its alright guys, even if Xbox doesn't invest in VR (MS has to at this point), you can always get it on Ps5.

crazyCoconuts1913d ago

@343 - is a "metabreaking" VR game like when you're playing VR, and it's so good the meta breaks and the VR becomes reality? You're right then - we haven't had one of those yet. fingers crossed though

Kiwi661913d ago (Edited 1913d ago )

Some would though

mandingo1913d ago

No you are saying Xbox fans don’t like vr. Big difference.

xX-oldboy-Xx1914d ago (Edited 1914d ago )

Let's hope people buy it, VR is amazing but still needs more consumer support. I wonder how many people who shit canned VR will jump on board next gen?

PSVR will be supported by PS5 - so the investment was worth it for those who jumped in early.

darthv721914d ago

VR still has a ways to go. I am hopeful they will address the singular experience that it is still somewhat limited to. As it is, its only fun for the person wearing the hmd while others just get to watch from a second screen and dont experience it for themselves (unless they take turns). VR can support multiple hmd but there has to be someone who can make that happen on a single system instead of chaining multiple systems together. If anyone could do that, it could be Sony. Their 3d tv (the ps one) offered two independent 3d experiences on a single set and was a look into the future of local multiplayer in a 3d tv setting. Who is to say they wont be able to offer a similar setup with PSVR2? Being able to have two users in the VR space it would be like lawnmower man.

The 10th Rider1914d ago

Nintendoland-like asymmetrical multiplayer. Would be amazing. I may pick one up eventually but right now I'm really just interested for sim-usage and the tech isn't where I want it yet.

S2Killinit1914d ago

As soon as xbox gets a headset, VR will no longer be a “gimmick”. The go to phrase “VR has a long way to go” is a disguised attempt to imply that VR just isnt good enough, in order to buy time for MS to get its act together and offer a headset for xbox. Not that VR wont improve, but so does everything else. Im just excited for PSVR2 and yes, even VR by MS. I just wish MS would just make a headset and invest fully in VR instead of waiting and watching others pave the way before they jump in by splashing cash.

Unspoken1914d ago

Man the stuff people are smoking these days must be strong. VR does have a way to go especially considering how much flak MS has received for other peripherals. They are much better off waiting for the market to mature and get the rest of the business in line before jumping in. Get your base console ready first, THEN work on extras.

ThinkThink1914d ago

If MS released it now, yes it would be. If in 25 years, this is the standard then it would no longer be considered a gimmick.

darthv721914d ago

MS already has invested in VR/MR. Just not in the console space. So I dont think them taking their time in deciding when it's right to do so is a bad thing. XB gamers are wanting games first before devices. One has to set the precedent before the other.

Atticus_finch1914d ago

News like this make me even more excited for PSVR2

GamingSinceForever1914d ago

VR are is bittersweet to me. Awesome tech but it makes me feel nauseated after more than an hour. I still have Farpoint and RE7 left finished. Astrobot and the one with the mouse were easier on the stomach.
