Police playing Gran Turismo Sport in the game of the law to improve high speed pursuit driving

Police officers have been receiving extra lessons in high-speed car chases - by playing a VIDEO GAME. PlayStation has partnered up with Lincolnshire Police in order to provide extra tuition to specialist drivers using Gran Turismo Sport. The project - which aims to boost skill and safety - has seen officers clock an initial lap time at Silverstone race course in Towcester, Northants. The four drivers then received specialist training using the game, including a new virtual reality mode. Any areas for improvement such as under or oversteer, braking late and carrying too much speed in corners were identified, with GT Sport used to demonstrate correct techniques.

Yet another example of real-life application of Gran Turismo...

I know for sure that playing GT since 1998 has helped me become a better and safer driver in real life. Happy to hear that others are using it for more than just gaming as well.

UCForce2376d ago (Edited 2376d ago )

I agree. I'm liking this so far.

GT Sport is looking great and it's nice to see it being taken seriously by people who drive in their work.

Umm.. Can anyone tell me why all these comments are marked as 'inappropriate'?!

Video games contributing by real world application in society!

Chris122376d ago

It has to be pointed out this was arranged and paid for by Sony, so is great PR and not much else.

"I know for sure that playing GT since 1998 has helped me become a better and safer driver in real life."

This was sarcasm right? lol

UCForce2376d ago

He isn't joking and no he is not crazy.

jc122376d ago

haha, ok. Thats like saying I play lots of Call of Duty, and now I'm a great marksman. haha...hahahahaha

HeisenbergX2376d ago

@jc12 "Thats like saying I play lots of Call of Duty, and now I'm a great marksman"

No, no it's not like that at all

Sitdown2376d ago

Haha, I find it rather humorous as well. Not saying simulators don't work, but I don't find my self in GT environments in real life.

badz1492376d ago

@jc12

"Thats like saying I play lots of Call of Duty, and now I'm a great marksman."

do you use artificial gun and the shoot and run and hide in real life while playing CoD? you use a controller yet expect to be a real marksman? GTFO with that trolling mentality. GT has been proven itself to be able to produce real life racers and you should know that by now if you actually look it up. playing racing games with wheels is a whole new world of difference than playing CoD with controller

jc122375d ago (Edited 2375d ago )

@Badz:

I'm sorry you're not satisfied with my analogy.

I will have you know that I played Duck Hunt on the NES system for years - with the "NES gun" - and I'm now a perfect marksman. I duck hunt with regularity and almost never miss.

Are you satisfied with my analogy now? Pfft, perhaps you should "GTFO" with your nonsense.

imagine EA using NFS to do this. poilce chase would be a whole lot more cinematic and physics defying LOL

XStation4pio_Pro2376d ago (Edited 2376d ago )

Weird considering there are actual real world simulator applications that are completely customizable. They definitely don’t train race team drivers on video games. They have actual simulators so they can specify tire compounds, wear, load, change ambient temps, operating temps, humidity etc. similar to pilot training.

BlackTar1872376d ago Show
Fishy Fingers2376d ago (Edited 2376d ago )

I think you’re taking it a little too seriously, its not legitimate training. These are highly trained real world advanced drivers. Doing a few virtual laps on a computer game (on a race track in a super car) isn’t going to make any benefit or improvement to their ability to do their day jobs (nor hamper it I should add). Just a nice little collaboration.

Could you imagine the potential PR nightmare if a police officer had/caused an accident that was ‘trained on a computer game’? The media would have a field day. It’s just a nice bit of promotion and I’m sure one the officers had a bit of fun with.

ApocalypseShadow2376d ago (Edited 2376d ago )

**Could you imagine the potential PR nightmare if an "airline pilot" had/caused an accident that was ‘trained on a computer game’? The media would have a field day.**

Not really. Just like pilots, practicing driving is fine. Simulations are okay because it doesn't harm anyone or get anyone killed. It's only when you *practice to kill* is when they have a field day

You're right about the promotion though. I'm waiting for them to talk to the DMV next. Only area it hasn't touched and improved drivers skill. You say that playing a computer game doesn't improve lap times yet real video gamers have become REAL race car and test drivers. So, you're wrong about that.

freshslicepizza2376d ago

@Apocalypse Shadow
"Not really. Just like pilots, practicing driving is fine. Simulations are okay because it doesn't harm anyone or get anyone killed. It's only when you *practice to kill* is when they have a field day"

But it trains you of what not to do in thsoe proper flight sims and gives results of what may occur. In Gran Turismo the physics are not based on real collisions so they do not give the proper feedback of what migtht occur if you drive into someone at those high speeds.

Atticus_finch2375d ago

Moldy, it's called a driving simulator, you seem to be looking for anything negative and confusing GTs with a crashing simulator. The point is not to crash. That's why other games even offer rewind buttons.

Liqu1d2376d ago

GT Academy has created race car drivers from playing a video game.

Gran Turismo Sport's big new update is the best and the worst of the series rolled into one

"Oh Gran Turismo, forever a series that comes up with ways to delight just as often as it comes up with new ways to disappoint. So it's been for coming up to 20 years, and so it is with Gran Turismo Sport's big July update - all of which amounts to the most profound change that's been made to Polyphony Digital's PlayStation 4 exclusive since it came out last October, a patch that alters the fundamentals while adding a suite of new features on top, with some decidedly more welcome than others." | Martin Robinson, Eurogamer

The real console driving simulator that produces real race car drivers continues to get better and better.

Still don't believe in micro transactions though as an option. But if the game wasn't modified with increased grinding and are for those lazy gamers that aren't invested enough or disciplined enough to ignore them, then, there they are for the suckers born every minute.

Playing GT is about the journey, not cutting corners to get to your destination. That's for casual people. Not for motor heads.

InMyOpinion2083d ago

Exactly. I don't get the upset about the option to pay for cars since they didn't modify the grind element. I've only owned it for a week but I already have over 20 cars from only racing, not spending any real or even digital money.

ShottyatLaw2083d ago

The biggest complaints come from 1) they previously announced that it wouldn't have MTs but are walking back on that now, which is never a good look, and 2) the payouts and grind should have been adjusted if MTs were going to be added.

Spartacus102083d ago

Welcome to Gran Turismo Apocalypse Shadow. Hope you're enjoying the start of your journey.

Just to let you know, the "journey" for many real motor heads started back in 1995 when the first Gran Turismo came out. We've spent thousands of hours driving thousands of cars. For us, when a new GT comes out, it isn't about the start of a new journey, it's about a driving experience that comes closer and closer to reality with every edition of GT.

We already know which cars we want to take to which tracks. We don't need to be treated like its our first GT experience.

ApocalypseShadow2083d ago

Played racing games since atari. But GT is where I started on sims. Too many countless hours. But there was games like test drive I played on pc many, MANY years ago.

What in the new update made the game worse? They remove contente? The gameplay is broken? The graphics was downgraded? They add rewind on a racing game? They locked contente on a paywall, loot boxes or subscription? What exactly turned your gameplay worse?

jukins2083d ago

Basical li u complaining about daily races switching to weekly. For now at least I love it. Being able to focus on a few tracks a week has dramatically increased my finish positions since I'm becoming so familiar with the tracks. And honestly with these races being about 30 min a piece (with qualifying run) most people wont race more than 2 or 3 times a day anyway

Cobra9512083d ago

Wait, they reduced your racing options by a factor of seven? If I'm reading that correctly, don't you think that's a huge new gameplay restriction? Or did you mean something else by daily vs weekly races?

jukins2083d ago

Umm theres still custom lobbies lol. But like I said giving people a week with these tracks online makes the competition much better. Ever since they started I've had the most fun online because most of the people are clean racers and are very familiar with the track which leads to tighter races. But I've been able to take down a lot of megane users in gr4 with lambos vipers and volkswagens. Something I previously couldnt due unless I practiced offline who h I personally hate

FPS_D3TH2083d ago

I’m happy it’s weekly. I don’t play my race games daily and it gives me a chance to put up a time and compete with my friends.

Abnor_Mal2083d ago

They added microtransactions to buy select cars, as per the article.

jukins2083d ago

Yea but they dont really mention it as negative. They even said when they started playing they ended up with 20 cars without spending real or in game money so it's not really a big deal considering how easy it to get credits and cars also the fact that they didnt mess with credit gain and other matters with microtransactions in play doesn't alter the balance of the game at all did you even read it?

Abnor_Mal2083d ago (Edited 2083d ago )

@jukins Not really a negative from the authors perspective, but the headline was written with the word worst. When you read the entire article, the only seemingly negative was the end paragraph about microtransactions and at a time when other games were removing loot boxes from their games. Also adding to the fact that it was stated by the developer the game would never have them and yet here we are.

Cobra9512083d ago

"I myself was livid, up to the point until I put down a couple of quid for the newly introduced Mazda 787, and then spent the best part of a 20 minutes just ogling the model - a high-end piece of art that looks like a premium Spark 1:43 diecast as opposed to the cheaper Bburagos you see in other games. Maybe I'm part of the problem . . ."

Gee, ya think? Yeah, bud. You're the problem personified. The first duty of corporations is to make money, and you just helped push them into monetizing games for extra profit.

jukins2083d ago

Again you ignore the fact that he easily got 20 cars to compete with when he started playing. After the game being out a year having the ability to buy cars changes absolutely nothing. For one besides lobbies online races are balanced and two none of the new cars give you advantage over the typical cars you see online (megane gr4

Gran Turismo Sport's Titular Mode Really Makes You Feel Like A Track Racer

Gran Turismo Sport has shifted its focus from a single-player experience of the past to an online-focused multiplayer racing. This of course have made the game a bit underwhelming for many fans, but if you are into the idea of racing with others online, it certainly delivers.

IRetrouk2355d ago

I just finished the campaign on sat, including beating the arcade mode on professional, over 35 hours on the track and add another 10 on that for overall time, scapes is addictive lol, not been online yet but will be jumping in at some point today.

and just the same as in GT6 but Sport is called Online QuickPlay

Marcello2355d ago (Edited 2355d ago )

So anyone got that license yet?? Not long now and yer be rubbing shoulders with all those racing stars. You will be a star !! They can come round for tea & you can show em your license, they will think your great & want to kiss your bottom all night long.

Pancit_Canton2355d ago

A great innovation from Polyphony Digital.

Father__Merrin2355d ago

ive finished the driving school segment and almost done the mission challenges, next up with be track challenges to finish these 3 will take a while. tried a few online races they are pretty good and work well, lets see how the seasons work out.

but plz bring custom soundtracks....i need initial D playing

LucasRuinedChildhood2355d ago

All PS4 games allow custom tracks or you use Spotify which I personally prefer. I suppose the tracks wouldn't be tied to whether you're racing though which some PS3 games had.
