Will the Xbox 360 survive past Christmas?

Davey Winder writes: "The red rings of death issue simply refuses to go away for Microsoft, and no matter how much it reduces the cost and extends the warranty one simple question remains: will the Xbox 360 ever be fit for purpose?

I guess that the headline should have read 'Will my Xbox 360 survive past Christmas?' given that I intend to use my own experience of Xbox 360 ownership to highlight that, no matter how hard Microsoft tries to convince the public differently, it just cannot seem to fix the hardware problems users of the Xbox 360 face."

With all of those 3 year warranties starting to expire it's going to get ugly for MS...and even uglier for the customers.

Montrealien5679d ago

would you want more problems for the people that bought an xbox mmorgan? Do you want it to get uglier? and if so, why?

Space heaters are needed till Atleast March..

AngryTypingGuy5679d ago (Edited 5679d ago )

That was pretty funny Jason.

Will the 360 last past Christmas? Yes, and it will sell more games in the process like it ALWAYS does!

Remember how MGS4 was "Judgment Day" for the 360? That was a laugh. After 10 weeks it had sold 3.29m compared to 5.25m after 10 weeks for Gears of War. Gears 2 will also sell more. And I'll spare you the Halo 3 numbers...don't want you guys to cry too bad.

I know, I know, VGCHartz are 360 fanboys and I'm sure MGS4 really sold 6 to 7 billion copies, one for every person on Earth. I know that's your collective excuse, so I thought I'd save you the typing.

Stupid article by a fanboy. My 2 360s running fine since last 2 years so now i should post my article as well?

Jamie Foxx5679d ago (Edited 5679d ago )

reading that,i dont own a 360, but truth or not i see this as flamebait

marinelife95679d ago

If you have a launch system you only have a few more weeks to manually make it red ring before your warranty is up.

You're better off getting it repaired now than having to pay for the repair later.

Montrealien5679d ago (Edited 5679d ago )

itwire writter says..

(I guess that the headline should have read 'Will my Xbox 360 survive past Christmas?' )

you guessed correctly fine sir!

I think this is just a bad experience from and informed cunsumer who just happens to write for a tech site. He also knows what has been giving traffic to sites these days, and his story on his personnal experience, with that title will get a few clics for his 4 freakin pages. every page felt like I was clicking for a refesh of the stupids pop-ups, lol

another thing that pisses me off is that fact that crap like this is rotting N4G into a place to go see how the (enthusiasts) act. This stupid story was approved in 20 minutes, when real news for gamers sits in the pending section for hours and hours.

Monchichi0255679d ago

Just another one of these stupid articles. Like the ones that came out last year with this same topic, and the year before.

The 360, PS3 and the Wii are here to stay! GET OVER IT!!!

Dreamworker5679d ago

and you are afraid to get the RROD after your warranty runs out. Just call microsoft tell them you have RROD and they will tell you to send it in & they send you a refurbished one. Microsoft don't even checks your console broken or not.

HighDefinition5679d ago (Edited 5679d ago )

That`s comment is so sad, even though I understand what your TRYING to say, It`s still sad.

Jake11115679d ago

I dont want to see the 360 die at all. In fact we NEED the 360 and the PS3. I own both.

The competition between the both systems is the reason we are not all here playing some gimick Wii crappy game and talking about how terrible the graphics are.

The competition between both Sony and Microsoft is the reason that online gaming is becoming more and more diverse.

They are the reason we are playing amazing games in HD.

Kudos to both Microsoft and Sony for continuously pushing the gaming industry forward instead of backward like Nintendo has done with their gimick wii system....

solidt125679d ago

Another Flame bait article. Don't fall for the bait!

marionz5679d ago

yes stupid article, my launch console is still going strong, and my new arcade console is a huge improvement, its both cool and quiet.

with all the great games comeing out before christmas the 360 is in a good position to clean up the compitition, as for 09 well who knows, ill wait for further game anouncements.

the only people that would think it wouldnt last is hardcore sonyfans, and while they know 360 games are awesome but they grit there teeth and say they arnt because they are purely jellous, we all know that 360 is doing well now, and will only get better.

godofthunder105679d ago

i'm tired of reading ridiculious articles from childish fanboys like this. The fact is that microsoft has shiped the new system.H*ll this is the first time that i've read an article about the rrod in months and it took a ps3 fanboy to post it and it's pathetic.

They have childish fanboys from both sides that think the system they have is the best in every way.The fact is that the 360 does somethings better then the ps3 and vice versa. To say that the system you have is the best in every aspect is a ridiculious statement.

i'm not saying that the 360 didn't have problems because it did and i'll admitt it.I will also admitt that the ps3 is the most dependable console ever made. The problem that i'm haveing is how ps3 fanboys are acting like microsoft is screwing everyone with the 360 but sony never screws anyone.Microsoft is giveing everyone a 3 year warrinty on the 360 because of the defect and that's good.

I don't know if ps3 fans forgot or just don't want to talk about it and wish every one forgot about the ps2.When the ps2 first was shiped out it had a defect in it to.You could buy a new ps2 and a new game and when you go to play the game it would read can't read disc on the tv and you couldn't get it to work at all.Sony was denying that the ps2 had a defect in it at first untill they was sued and then they admitted that some ps2 had a defected drive in it.Unlike microsoft sony was denying anything was wrong with the ps2 but they knew it was.Unlike microsoft sony didn't give people a 3 year warrinty instead they only gave an extra month.

I admitt that people should debate things but like grownups not kids.People post things that's true about the system that people have if they like it or not.Instead of checking up on it to see if it's true they say it's a lie and call the person names and it's pathetic.I posted this same thing about the ps2 and ps fans went crazy calling me all kinds of names. They said i was makeing it up because i have a 360.

Fact is fact, sony was sued over the ps2 because of defected drives in some systems.I bough some ps2 and the drive went out on me.I know they fixed the problem later on.The problem is that ps fanboys want admit anything that's bad about sony. They act as if sony is looking out for them and it's bullsh*t.

The fact is that sony doesn't give a sh*t about them, all they want to do is make money for the stock holders.Ps3 fanboys need to remember when sony was sued over the ps2 and all the other lawsuits.I'm not saying that microsoft is any better. What i'm saying is that ps3 fanboys want admitt the problem that sony had with the ps2.They act like the 360 was the only consol to ever have a problem and microsoft is the only company that's out to make all the money that they can. This just shows that they are bias, childish, ridiculious, and hypercrits for doing it and if i was them i would be ashamed. It's 360 fanboys to that acts like this to and it should all stop.

If people look at all the facts about both systems and companies they would see that there isn't that much different in them. The fact is that sony had problems with the ps2 and ps3 fanboys should just stop talking about the rrod or if they want to talk about it they should be fair. They should also talk about the ps2 defect and why sony was sued over it instead of saying it never happened when it did.

I'm not saying that every one is a fanboy. They have people from both sides that act like they are old enough to go on the web unlike the majority of them.I think that people like this guy that posted this article and any one else that post crap like this about any system should stop.If an article doesn't concern the system that a person have they should ignore it because it doesn't concern them 1 bit.Every one should talk about games and stop fighting over the systems like kids.Ever one might as well stop fighting over the xbox and ps because they are both here to stay.

If your 360 breaks get it fixed under warranty.
I'm on my 6th or 7th (can't remember now) and each replacement has come with another 3 year warranty.

I expect my controller will break considering all the use i intend on giving it this winter.

Gears 2, Fable 2, Fallout 3, Prince of Persia, End War and COD5

sak5005679d ago

sorry by mistake disagreed. Here bubbles to make it up for it. Also its like now $199 and more reliable than the previous version so who the hell cares with 3 years warranty. Read somewhere on n4g one guy's ps3 conked off so what will that guy do now? GO pay another $300 for new one?

va_bank5679d ago

"I'm on my 6th or 7th (can't remember now)"

.. I'm not trying to flame, honestly, but you don't see a problem with this statement?

poopsack5679d ago (Edited 5679d ago )

PS3 owners have warranties as well, it's just a rare case to hear they need to use it. If you find it okay to buy a newer version of the same console because it's more reliable then ok. I'm sure PS3 owners are comfortable knowing the money they paid for theirs is the only amount of money they have to pay for their hardware. But way to go, mentioning Ps3 owners were they have no part, yeah, they're the defensive ones.

bruiser815679d ago

you must really love your system, i was pissed when my launch ps2 burned out. And i'm now on my 3'rd 360, if this one breaks i think i will throw the towel in on the 360 and wait for their next system

thor5679d ago

Yeah I was annoyed when my PS2 broke, the laser in the disk tray crapped out, I managed to sell it to a friend for dirt cheap who thought he could fix it though (he couldn't). Only problems I've had with my launch PS3 have been 2 faulty USB ports (which certain firmware updates have fixed, others have broken them again) and those L2 and R2 buttons that break, that's happened on one of my controllers. But then, it's a playstation console so you kinda expect the L2 and R2 buttons to break.

The Makr5679d ago

I have had no problems at all, and according to what i have read, it has the same chip setup that the launch 360's have. My 360 is downstairs in the coolest room in the house, but I have accidently left it on overnight a few times and it's still going. I'm not going to try to intentionally make it break. If it is still working by Jan 2010, I will definitely have gotten my money's worth by far, considering I only paid $300 in a sale price back then. And would have no problem just buy a new arcade unit, which by 2010, will prolly be 125 or 100 dollars.

This article fails and the guy who wrote it fails.

Sony Rep5679d ago

Well, if it was a disc read error problem, then all you had to do was get a cotton swab and clean the laser.

Not as serious as the RROD.

shelbygt335679d ago

I bought a x360 around launch, and it lasted about 8 months before it died. Since then, the replacement has worked just fine.

Also, my PS3 bricked on the last major firmware update, and that got fixed as well (same PS3 came back ... or at least, the same HDD came back)

So, for me, they are each equally as faulty. One was software related, one was hardware, but the net result for me was a week or so turnaround until it got repaired.

GameDev5679d ago

many have wondered what would make some console owners go through the aggravation of getting a defective console replaced (in the case of one user over 10 times) and still keep defending this company.

This isn't love for MS or the 360, it's PURE UNADULTERATED HATE for Sony. plain and simple.

It's obvious now that sony could have come out with the Ps4 this generation and they would still be getting slammed by sony haters.

oh well.

TiKiMaN15679d ago

How is it possible that you have gone through so many? Do you stick your Xbox 360 in the microwave or put duct tape over the ventilation ports in the back? I would understand 2-3 not 6-7.

6 Fun Games Where You Actually Play As The Bad Guy

While the mainstream media always sees things turning in favor of the hero, here are 6 games that own being a bad guy.

Profchaos4h ago

Pretty much all of these games listed are based around a morality system you don't have to be bad and you don't have to be good.

It seems to have left out some real amazing games like red dead redemption 1/2,ass effect and true crime la/ny

Tacoboto3h ago

Armored Core VI?

Ok, I'm really missing something here. Just beat chapter 3 earlier this evening, unlocked A-rank Arena fights. I'm not seeing or sensing any branching paths or morality system and I've done every side mission and arena fight available to me up to that fight.

Is something big coming soon to branch the story?

banger883h ago

No mention of Grand Theft Auto? Saints Row (original trilogy), Manhunt? Also The Suffering (depending on the ending you get).
