Where Have All the Zombies Gone

Strategy Informer editor Stew writes:

"I find it incredibly hard to look at the current incarnations of the Resident Evil franchise and think them a part of the same series that defined survival-horror in the 1990s. It isn't that I dislike Resident Evil 4, or that I won't enjoy Resident Evil 5 when it comes out. I'm just hard-pressed to look at these games and see even the slightest trace of what the series once was. To some people this is great. It would be hard to ever argue that the tank controls that marred the series were in any way superior to the brilliant control scheme of Resident Evil 4. Nor would it be easy to discount the graphical leap the series took with its fourth iteration. Even so, a lot of potential was wasted in Resident Evil 4."

I've always thought that since RE:4 they should have used a new name for the series, because its exactly that; a new series. It's not the Resident Evil I remember and love.

Panthers6099d ago

Well it still tells the story that I am so into. Its just a new way of playing it.

Master Debater6099d ago

The story still entails Umbrella Corp and friends so it must use the Resident Evil name somehow. Whether it be a spin-off or an actual sequel. RE4 was more of a sequel than just a spin-off like RE Zero.

Im pretty sure all the zombies went in Left 4 Dead, from what I heard its a pretty high paying job, $17.00/hour plus full health benefits, and thats including dental =)

Heldrasil6099d ago

The zombie health plan you speak does not offer dental coverage. I am sure you've seen their teeth. It must be some great helth coverage in order to stay animated after death.

cereal_killa6099d ago

Ya i can see why there s no dental I don't think there a dentist that would go near a zombies mouth funny post lol

LeonSKennedy4Life6099d ago

Gabe Newell wouldn't put out for the Gold plan...

BigMassacre6099d ago

It can't be helped. Sadly, it's more about action and shooting than it was before.

I wonder how many of the newer Resident Evil fans that started with RE4 can actually handle the older games in the series. No buying ammunition, limited saves, the works. Yes, the controls were not as fluid, but they went with the games well.

Those were good times.

I agree with the article almost 100%. I liked RE4 a lot. But as I played through the game I kept thinking, where are the zombies? where is Umbrella? it's only a matter of time until they rear their ugly head...Never came.

For me, the pinnacle of RE will always be RE2 for the playstation. I loved the story, the characters, the cut scenes, and the gameplay, pretty much everything. Knock the controls if you want, but anyone who played the game long enough got used to them and eventually mastered them.

As for RE4, it was a blast, but it just didn't hook me the same. I still believe the biggest downfall was the nearly unlimited ammo. That was part of what made the original RE games so challenging, there was the ever present feeling that you need to save your ammo and it set the mood of surviving rather than killing anything that moves.

Regardless I'll pick up RE5 so that my brother and I can join in co-op play, which will be awesome.

Resident evil is just a shooter now. Seriously a cover system? A COVER SYSTEM IN A SURVIVAL HORROR GAME?! ARE YOU SERIOUS?! -_- Just wow.

Panthers6099d ago

ya its not like they are going to be shooting back, and if they do then that is just terrible.

Wait, they did shoot in RE4 didnt they?

Master Debater6099d ago

Yeah they shot at you and threw objects too, but the thing is that they shot and threw lethargically so a cover system would be really counter productive as zombies would encircle you while you're stuck to the wall.

Ex-Naughty Dog Dev Says Resident Evil 4 Inspired Uncharted and Many More Action Games

Former Naughty Dog dev says Resident Evil 4 inspired Unchartted and even Gears of War, particularly the over-the-shoulder camera view.

CrimsonWing6932d ago

It revolutionized third-person shooters, in a genius way that gives you full control of aiming.

CrimsonWing6931d ago

No, I mean RE4. Like the whole snap to over-shoulder and precision aiming was what I meant.

I won’t deny Winback does pave the way in some respect. But it’s not the same at all.

InUrFoxHole32d ago

Both are great series. That's awesome

Samonuske32d ago

I thought this was common knowledge. Resident Evil Revolutionised over the shoulder aiming in 3rd person shooters/action games

italiangamer32d ago (Edited 32d ago )

Influenced basically every third person action game made after it, GTA uses the over the shoulder perspective when shooting since the 4th installment, Red Dead Redemption 1 & 2 too and the Batman Arkham series has the over the shoulder perspective as the main camera throughout the whole game series.
Obviously there are a ton more examples but you get the point 🗿.

Simon's Quest is better than Symphony.

If you're gonna troll, at least make a legitimate attempt.

Levii_9241d ago

Hot damn that's a good list. The only one i never played is AOE2 and i never finshed Chrono Trigger but it was damn good.

Speaking of what's old but holds up amazingly well and plays like a dream.. i played Symphony of the Night for the first time in 2019.. yep that's right. It became one of my favourite games of all time that i replay almost every year. I couldn't believe how good it was. That is almost impossible for me with newer games let alone older ones. Truly a special gem.

LG_Fox_Brazil40d ago

That's a pretty fucking great list

__y2jb40d ago (Edited 40d ago )

The only one I’d disagree with is doom. It shows its age badly I think. After 5 minutes of play these days you put it down.
