Scraping Bottom Games' debut release succeeds at making mages fun to play thanks to a combination of great gameplay and well written lore. Balance issues, poor performance and dated graphics might scare away some players, but those who stick with Fictorum till the end credits will find a diamond in the rough that is well worth playing.
Snerd says, "Fictorum is a game where wizards aren’t just noodle-armed pathetic types. They’re the strongest guys on planet earth. You play as “A fictorum” and, the last of his kind, on a quest to go kill the guy who is trying to have you killed, as you generally do when one tries to kill you."
All of the deliverables from the Kickstarter campaign are in place. You’re an all powerful mage who can customize magic spells and destroy anything in your path. Call forth meteors, fire, ice, lightning, and destroy to your heart’s content. Fictorum puts magic use front and center and the only way to use a sword in this game is to summon one if you have the scroll to do so. But why use a sword when you can wield lightning Emperor Palpatine style or throw fireballs?
When a studio runs a Kickstarter that successfully hits the mark on its funding goal, it is always exciting to see the result. Fictorum is one such title developed by Scraping Bottom Games and is a third person, action roguelike RPG with destructible environments and procedural events. With so much promise, does Fictorum live up to it?
