Hideki Kamiya Thanks Yoko Taro for “Saving” PlatinumGames with Nier: Automata

NieR: Automata has brough its Director Yoko Taro back under the spotlight, but he certainly wasn't the only one to rightfully benefit from the game's success. PlatinumGames certainly received high praise as well, and Co-Founder Hideki Kamiya took to Twitter today to give thanks.

PlatinumGames hadn't put out a new standout title since Bayonetta 2 in 2014 until Nier: Automata arrived

darthv722538d ago

Would be sweet if they made sequels to some of their previous games like metal gear rising. That is a fast and fun hack n slash.

franwex2538d ago

Technically Konami could hire them to make a follow up. In fact, they probably should.

naruga2538d ago (Edited 2538d ago )

good to hear from them they r continuing ......after the whole MS fiasco (with MS being completely responsible for it) , it was obvious they had existential- financial problems....goood they found safe console refuggee in PS keeping them alive .....

BigWan782538d ago

@naruga...

So MS should have just kept allowing PlatinumGames to steal from them...

u sound foolish...

Liqu1d2538d ago

@BigWan78 You're the one who sounds foolish making claims with no evidence to defend a company that doesn't care about you.

Who knows what deal they had in place, Xbox one is simply not a good gamble to make exclusive content for considering the opposition is leagues ahead. To invest all of their time into scalebound would have been a mistake, although it is sad scalebound will not see the light of day. At the end of the day they are a business.

BlackOni2538d ago (Edited 2538d ago )

Thing is, not a lot of folks know or understand that Microsoft gave Platinum a ton of chances to make good on their promise to produce a product worth the investment Micosoft put in. In that span of time, Platinum took on, and created legend of Korra, Transformers Devastation, teenage mutant ninja turtles, and Nier Automata (one of my favorite games of all time). And in that time, still hadn't shown much progress on their title promised 4-5 years ago. So can we really be mad at Microsoft for cutting it?

DarXyde2538d ago

BlackOni,

Of the games you listed (Transformers, Korra, TMNT, and Nier Automata) Kamiya had no real involvement. His attention was on Scalebound, which is unsurprising since he unapologetically loves dragons. In the meantime, Platinum needed revenue coming in via other projects. Three small ones and one big one with Square Enix's help. It just didn't materialize and I'm pretty sure they had their best talent on it. I'm pretty disappointed. That game was the biggest reason I bought an Xbox.

I can understand why Microsoft cut it, but I also believe that this was something Kamiya REALLY cared about and wanted perfection above all of his previous projects.

I don't exactly disagree, but there is certainly context.

for Xbox and Playstation this time though...

Activemessiah2538d ago

I can see Nintendo taking the third one for themselves.

GordonKnight2538d ago (Edited 2538d ago )

Nintendo really just needs to buy platinum games along with monolith

gamer78042538d ago

@GordonKnight i don't think platinum wants to be owned by anyone honestly, and that would be awful for such an underpowered system to get rights to those games which could look and run so amazingly on pspro and xbox x

Abriael2538d ago (Edited 2538d ago )

@GordonKnight: no thanks. We really don't need another studio having to suffer from Nintendo's "localization" by default.

When did Platinum need saving?

Did Scalebound's cancellation do that much of a toll on them

GameBoyColor2538d ago

they put a bunch of crapware out in between bayo2 and nier, plus the cancellation. They must've been feeling the effects.

Erik73572538d ago (Edited 2538d ago )

I mean they were compensated by Microsoft for the development time into it I'm sure. Although it was still devastating to see a game they were working on cancled for them

NecoTehSergal2538d ago

Lotta their new games were really dumped on, basically the tl;dr that reviewers and critics were saying is that Platinum games became a one-trick pony, where games like Bayonetta and Metal Gear Rising were staples that showed them at their best - the many games they pushed out inbetween were just shovelware which were just the same run-of-the-mill combat systems, copy-pasted, that their efforts were extremely selective and inconsistent.

Nier helped, you could say, revive them again because of the 'Filler games' that the pushed inbetween the ones they're praised for. The moral lesson Platinum needs to feel is that they need to stick behind a good project that they can invest safely in and not try to tackle so much at once only to have Quantity over Quality.

gamer78042538d ago (Edited 2538d ago )

scale bound they were paid some by MS to develop it, but its cancellation tarnished them, they had a lot of other titles in between then that weren't a success, tmnt, transformers, wonderful 101, star fox

DivineAssault 2539d ago

Theyre a great team.. It just sucks Bayonetta "MIGHT" be exclusive to nintendo.. Rumors of part 3 are circulating with the remasters going to switch..

darthv722538d ago

Then get a switch to play it. Seems simple enough.

Tapani2538d ago

Yeah Switch Remasters for Bayo 1-2 and Bayo 3 for PS4 Pro / One X :P

DivineAssault 2538d ago (Edited 2538d ago )

I have the wii u & switch. Doesnt mean others arent missing out because of its exclusivity though.. Especially since its so hard to find..

Erik73572538d ago (Edited 2538d ago )

Well you wouldn't even have bayonetta 2 if Nintendo did nothing and I DOUBT the third one will be made without Nintendo funding it as well .

Neir plays very similar to bayonetta anyway

Theyellowflash302538d ago

Nier doesn't play like Bayonetta at all. lol But I agree that Nintendo is probably funding Bayo3

Michiel19892538d ago (Edited 2538d ago )

I have yet to find these so called rumors. Any proof of the rumors (sounds weird I know). Also a remaster for Bayonetta seems kinda unlikely to me. It never got that popular as they hoped it would

It would be a bad move for platinum to stay exclusive, means less money in the long run

DivineAssault 2538d ago

Platinum wont be exclusive to nintendo but the Bayo series might.. Also the rumors are easy to find.. The switch is much more likely to sell than the wii u so im sure nintendo wont let a great game like Bayo 2 go to waste..

bluefox7552538d ago

Nah, Bayo 2 was successful enough that they'd be crazy to limit the game to Switch.

C_Ali882538d ago (Edited 2538d ago )

Why is it so hard to grasp that Nintendo owns the right to Bayo2?? No other console will get it unless Nintendo gives the green light. Which is unlikely!

Given that Bayo1 and 2 together are only on one console it would seem to me that Bayonetta 3 Switch is the ONLY logical choice for the series to be whole!

They patched some crashing bugs. There no click needed

Ratchetlombax12h ago

Which is great news nonetheless, the previous patch came out 7 years ago and no one expected the devs to fix the game anymore! I've actually played the game only recently on my PS5 thanks to backwards compatibility, and I was hit with constant crashes in a specific area, and I've seen a lot of players complaining about it too, so I think that's awesome for future players

phoenixwing11h ago

I didn't say or imply it's bad news. I'm just annoyed someone made an article with a cryptic title so I revealed the pertinent info

Dirty_Lemons4h ago

Oh that's interesting! I played it last April for the first time on PS5 and suffered no crashes, but I played it on Switch and...yeah

YourMommySpoils1d 1h ago

That's it, Stellar Blade colab confirmed.

jznrpg21h ago(Edited 21h ago)

It should have a PS5 version already. I hope they release it, physically though

YourMommySpoils13h ago(Edited 13h ago)

Maybe, but it does coincide with the Stellar Blade collab Roadmap.

garos8215h ago

thats interesting so many years later. never encountered any crashes in my multiple playthroughs but great nonetheless for those affected.

Ratchetlombax12h ago

Yeah it was mostly an issue for PS5 players and it popped up pretty recently because of a PS5 software update

Notsofast4h ago

That's excellent news that crashing happened to me at least 50 times while playing the game a few months ago before playing Stellar Blade almost a game ending bug for some people because you have to pass that area to beat the game and it just kept happening

OtterX2d ago

For me, these Mario + Rabbids games were the best thing Ubisoft has developed in recent years. I'd hate to see Ubisoft drive the series into the ground like their other properties, so I think 2 games are enough. Maybe 1 more.

Inverno2d ago

They can't ruin it because Ninty will send their ninjas to destroy all traces of it. If not for that you can bet that spinoff series would've been milked dry by now.

XiNatsuDragnel2d ago

Good luck in your future endeavors

Hotpot2d ago

Thank you for Mario + Rabbids series, I quite enjoyed it

Einhander19722d ago

Great games, I have wanted Sony to copy these games with their own mascots for years.

Michiel19891d 12h ago

not cinematic or 3rd person enough for Sony

DefaultComment2d ago

I think Nintendo has to hire this guy, I mean the fact that miuamoto himself said to him that he is impressed with this work, speaks volumes. Th possibility on having Mario on Soliani's hand could be incredible and quite possibly a new era for Mario games.

OtterX2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Yea, these games didn't even feel Ubisoft at all. This felt very authentic Nintendo. This guy's direction is obviously stellar, and Ubisoft somehow managed to not kill it with microtransactions and repetitive, boring tasks.
