Your list of top 5 worst, is my list of top 5 best. Blow it out your a**.

Princess_Pilfer2854d ago (Edited 2854d ago )

Shockingly, somebody didn't read the article before responding. If Perfect Dark Zeros Joanna Dark is in your Top 5 character designs, something is wrong with you.

I'm not going to claim that most of what they harp on isn't characters being sexualized, and when they are making that complaint I don't really agree, but I am going to claim that your reactionary non-argument that fails to even attempt to understand what they said or why, much less create a coherent counter point, is exactly as bad.

Specifically, I agree that 2 of their list are bad character designs. Joanna Dark and Cindy. Joanna Dark for reasons they explain fairly well. Cindy because that's not how mechanics dress. You can have sexy mechanic character in sexy outfit whos cloths at least kinda make sense for the job (hint: overalls keep showing up in DOA games for a reason.)

bluefox7552854d ago

Character design is entirely subjective. You're saying a fantasy character, in a fantasy world, is "badly designed" because it's different than how they would dress in the real world? If you're offended by that sort of thing, fine, but that's just your opinion, no reason to project it onto others. Just because someone likes something you don't, doesn't mean "there's something wrong" with them.

Princess_Pilfer2854d ago

If they like most anything about Perfect Dark Zero, yeah, something wrong with them. I know it's like the last of the AAA games of that type, and by virtue of being a 360 game it controls the best, but basically everything about it is garbage.

You're also attacking points I didn't make.

rainslacker2853d ago

Yeah, and a prince on his way to get married dresses like in black leather and thigh high boots, while his beefcake best friend wears black leather and a muscle shirt, and his ambiguously gay friend wears black leather and takes pictures of his best friend and aforementioned beefcake friend having a good friendly wrestling sprawl in the middle of fighting a behemoth, in the middle of the desert where they're always complaining about it being hot. Cindy is so out of place in terms of fashion. She should be wearing scanty black leather to match the style of the region.

Also, while I would agree that no mechanic dresses like that, my neighbor has a daughter who likes to fix cars who does dress pretty scantily at times while crawling around under the car, or peering under the hood. She's not as outgoing as Cindy though.

Princess_Pilfer2853d ago

How a prince dresses is not a matter of function. How a mechanic dresses is. There is your difference.

Female characters with T&A hangin hanging out, are all the more appealing. Love them, and we need to see more of them.

meka26112854d ago

Yep, and don't let them know that men get the same treatment, always with huge muscles and usually no shirt on, but you know, the poor women.

Princess_Pilfer2854d ago

Let me tell you a secret. Those male characters aren't typically designed to be appealing to women. Kratos isn't designed like a bronze god to be attractive to women, he's designed like a bronze god to appeal to (western) mens sense of masculine power. He's not half naked to be attractive to women, he's half naked to show off that masculine power (both in that he's so unafraid that he doesn't bother with armor and so you can actually see how ripped he is.)

I'm not saying games sexualizing either men or women is bad, it isn't, but lets not pretend there isn't a fundamental difference in how going about that would be handled in general. Lots of women find that whiny ***k wad Allistare very attractive after all, and it has very little to do with his figure (which is mostly buried in armor.) I don't get it, but I'm gay so I guess I'm not meant to.

FunAndGun2854d ago

But where are all the crotch shots, bulging balls, bent over butts, and sexually suggestive poses when it comes to males and the "same treatment"?

A males bare chest is not sexually suggestive...either are huge muscles.

bluefox7552854d ago (Edited 2854d ago )

@Princess Is every romance novel cover emblazoned with Fabio, to appeal to "western male sense of masculine power"? OR...could it be that the same type of strong, powerful depiction of men that guys look up to ALSO happens to be attractive to a large number of women?
@FunAndGun Your comment is predicated on the false assumption that women and men are sexualized the same to the opposite sex. They're not, as I've already pointed out in my comment to princess, nearly every romance novel, which are marketed almost exclusively to women, has a bare chested, tanned, powerful man with bulging muscles on the cover. They don't have him bent over showing his ass, or wearing a banana hammock to draw the focus to his bulge. The reason for this is that men and women find different visual cues attractive, they are not the same in that respect.

To both of you. here's an example of how the two can and often do overlap. http://imgur.com/HPJstv0

Allsystemgamer2854d ago

@fun and gun

Actually the male cheat is sexually suggestive when it's well built. Women are attracted to fit chests.

Look at advertisements with male models. Shirt buttoned down enough to just tease the women.

Same with sexualized women. A bikini is more suggestive but men and women view specialization different. Men prefer to see and women tend to like "mystery" (not as much showing. Think of how women find men in suits hot).

The point is. You don't need a dick to be sexual for a man. If that were the case no one would care about abs and fit men.

Also. You should probably look into male stripping. They don't show balls or even a bulge a lot of the time. Because that's not what the women want to see.

zekk2854d ago

@Allsystemgamer. Male cheat huh? :P

Princess_Pilfer2854d ago

You ignore that such characters aren't raging balls of homicide. They're sensative, mysterious, usually either fairly kind or broken and to be fixed.

You also say I'm wrong while at the *same time* pointing out how the visual cues for what's (generally) attractive to men and women are different, which is what I was saying in the first place. You have to pick one. Either there is a fundamental difference or there is not.

bluefox7552854d ago (Edited 2854d ago )

@Princess "You ignore that such characters aren't raging balls of homicide. They're sensative, mysterious, usually either fairly kind or broken and to be fixed. "
Which characters are raging balls of homicide? Kratos perhaps, but that's part of Kratos's story and it's pretty well explained, he's a literal "angry god". If you're referring to the ludonarrative dissonance in games, well, that's just dumb. You know very well that a certain level of suspension of disbelief goes into games so you actually have stuff to do, which is why Nathan Drake or Lara Croft are so incredibly cavalier about killing hundreds of men, which would undoubtedly take a toll on most people even if it were in self defense. This is why as gamers, we're able to detach their actions a bit from the overall story, in which they ARE sensitive, mysterious, kind, broken, etc.

Princess_Pilfer2854d ago

I was talking about kratos. I can talk about others though.

Nathan drake is not mysterious. He's han solo and/or indiana jones. We've all seen that archtype before, and he's neither especially kind or broken, he's a jackass. An interesting character sure, but not attractive. I can think of precisely 2 characters that women seem to generally find attractive, Allistare and whatever the main character in prince of persia is named, and in both cases it has everything to do with their personalities and little to do with their apprearance. That's not to say looks don't matter to women, it's to say it's lower priority.

In fact I can find a couple of comments talking about how atractive Kratos was in his most recent E3 showing specifically because he wasn't strictly masculine power fantasy personified, he was a caring father.

Most male characters in games are not designed with the intention to be attractive to women, and if they are then the people designing them have no idea what they're doing. Yes, they tend to in general be physically attractive, but so does literally everybody in video games. The difference is in presentation and which qualities are more likely to be deemed attractive and thus emphasized.

In both male and female characters, what is typically emphasized is what men find attractive or appealing, not what women find attractive or appealing.

generic-user-name2853d ago

@FunAndGun

You ever play MGS2/3. There's literal dick grabbing in both games. Quiet was nothing compared to how Raiden and pretend Raikov got it.

always liked 15, but the development was shch a shitshow. it could have been so much more.

but Tabata did a good job with what he had regardless

DivineHand125133d ago

Ff15 was a missed opportunity from square as they transitioned from turn based to real time.

One of the issues is that it was 30 fps. The combat mechanics required precision dodges to activate Noctis teleport ability and it was difficult to do at 30 fps. I am glad they rectified that in FF16. The story and flow also felt like it went through a chopshop similar to how some live service games end up when they are trying to meet a deadline. Those extra episodes they sold as dlc should have been in the maingame.

FF15 is one of the weaker entries in the series.

Z501132d ago

Dodges don't activate the teleport ability. Teleport was R1 + O. Dodge was just the O button. Explain the Black Hood (the item that automatically Dodges for you)

TheNamelessOne133d ago

Ah yes; FF XV.
The beginning of me coming to the realization the series was no longer for me.

Michiel1989132d ago

16 was a lot better, I think 15 was just a big mess with how development went and all. The music though, one of the best in the series, probably the only reason I finished the game.

Cacabunga132d ago

At least FF15 had RPG elements . 16 was just an action game from beginning to end.

Michiel1989132d ago

I rather have a good action game than a bad rpg with 2 button combat

Cacabunga132d ago (Edited 132d ago )

Then call it something else then FF. I got scammed with FF16. Nothing of what i expected it to be.
Even the action is bad in it, especially after the demo section where absolutely nothing happens until the very end.

FF15 isnt a great game but it has some variety at least.

CrimsonWing69133d ago

That initial trailer with the Leviathan fight was the game I wish we got. The actual retail release was watchdogged to all Hell and while there’s enjoyment to be had in the game, it’s such an incomplete product and so many elements feel so slapped together without any cohesion.

Like, don’t get me wrong, I loved fishing, cooking, and the first third of the game, but I much rather they made a story that didn’t feel barely there and the the last third of the game didn’t feel so rushed and unfinished.

Becuzisaid132d ago

Every time a party member left for a period of time screamed future paid dlc. It was horrible.

Imagine Dagger and Steiner making the party go to sleep in Lindblum in FF9 disc 1 and then taking off to Alexandria by foot themselves, but then never playing their side of the adventure in disc 2 when they smuggle her through the South Gate in pickles, take the cable car and fight the Waltz, head to Treno and start the quest to find Supersoft. They just eventually reunite with the main party in the future without explanation of what went on in their adventure.

Or Sephiroth's backstory in the famous Kalm flashback being added as a dlc pack. Same goes for Vincent, Cid, or Yuffie for that matter.

Oh and anything to do with Jenova, the Ancients, Aerith, her mom and Gast, shoved into a 2 hour CG movie or 5 hour anime ministries that's considered required viewing for anything in the main game to make sense or have characters actually be interesting.

I enjoyed FF15 at the time, and finished it, but it's bright spots are marred by a bad development cycle and a worse marketing scheme.

CrimsonWing69132d ago

What’s sad is when I watched a vid on the entire story (that wasn’t properly told in the actual game)!it was really solid and could’ve been one of the most epic stories in any FF. I think a lot of the compilation and cross-media stuff really f*cked it all up.

gurp133d ago

FFXV was underrated in my opinion
I have played all of the final fantasy games, and I loved this game
turn based to me takes too long, I like active battle
the extra dlc and chapters should have been included in the original release, but it is nice that they fixed the game later

CoPilot: Gaming Chat is an amazing revelation - A true gamer friend at your side

CG writes: In this video, we take Microsoft's Copilot for a spin and talk about gaming and AI influences, and the implications of that. We talked about a possible Metal Gear Solid V remaster, Deus Ex remaster, Hitman Blood-Money mission, and more. Imagine trying to talk gaming with non-gaming friends in real-life and after 5 seconds, they switch off and possibly yawn. Well, CoPilot isn't like that, instead it's like talking to a like-minded gaming fan who is totally on your level. The public version of CoPilot released in Feb 2023 and already it's become almost indistinguishable from a real person.

Metal Gear Solid 5, Nearly After A Decade, Is Still A Timeless Classic

The Metal Gear series, led by Kojima, pioneered the stealth genre, creating a masterclass in storytelling and gameplay.

SimpleSlave335d ago (Edited 335d ago )

No. But MGS5: Ground Zeroes might actually be one of the greatest Game Demo ever, if not the best.

xHeavYx335d ago

I know a lot of people didn't, but I actually liked that story twist at the end. The game was fun and all, but I wouldn't call it a timeless classic.

Cacabunga334d ago

Metal Gear legend stopped with number 4.
MGS5 needed a year or 2 more of development to be maybe among the classics.. it was clearly rushed, especially at the end. The story teaches us absolutely nothing new.

just_looken335d ago

A demo is free that was a $40 cry for help as later we would know konami did not want to fun hideo and his team anymore that is why we got the unfinished phantom pain.

-Foxtrot335d ago (Edited 335d ago )

Meh

Great stealth gameplay but the game was just average.

Bland open world that felt lifeless, the story felt shoehorned in, unfinished story etc. The whole thing was just average to me compared to the other main titled games.

I would have rather preferred it if they kept Ground Zeroes for the main game as the opening and the rest of the game turns into a Metal Gear 1 & 2 remake to bring things full circle.

just_looken335d ago

If you dig around they had old behind trhe scenes of phantom pain vids and books wrote around the time.

Before funding was puled the main idea was to keep peace walker coop it was in the games early builds and that end game were your building your base that was suppose to be metal gear one.

You as the fake big boss was going to make your own metal gear one map aka your base (outer heaven) then me as sold snake use the mode that is in the game invade/defeat the base even fight your current version of metal gear that was in the game but not finished.

So your idea was on the table bit got canned.

CrimsonWing69335d ago (Edited 335d ago )

Like hell it is. That was the first time I became aware of being sold an unfinished game and was blown away about blind fanboys saying it was some perfect game.

Yea, the first few chapters were great until they do that thing halfway and make you replay all the missions again. Then little things like capturing animals but only seeing a JPEG unlike 3 where everything was modeled out. Areas were massive, desolate, and boring to look at.

Game was a massive let down for me and the potential was so high for it. Honestly, this was one of the most disappointing games I ever played. What’s worse is it starts off brilliant. You literally play through until you get to the point where you could tell they just stopped developing and then quickly used glue and construction paper to “finish” it and then sold it. Quite frankly, that’s insulting to consumers and fans.

Inverno335d ago

People have selective memory. This game had huge drama attached to it, what Konami did to Kojima and this game was horrible. Now they praise Konami cause they revived Silent Hill, even though SH looks half arsed too.

CrimsonWing69335d ago

I dunno if they’re getting much praise after the Silent Hill 2 debacle. Makes me scared sh*tless for the MGS 3 Remake…

Michiel1989334d ago

I don't wanna defend konami, but Kojima had 7 years to make the game, it's not that weird for a publisher to expect a game to be finished in that amount of time.

Also no one is praising konami from what I've seen, they're just excited that a Silent Hill game is releasing

CrimsonWing69333d ago (Edited 333d ago )

@Michiel1989

You’re absolutely correct. Look, the dude is a visionary and has brought us some incredible games, but he constantly would go over budget and could never stick to a deadline. I don’t know if people remember the MGS 4 trailers but it became a joke when you’d see a release date and then they crossed it out in the next trailer to give another.

What a lot of people don’t know is there’s a certain amount of money given for development and marketing. When you go over the budget and add additional marketing over the deadline it isn’t cheap. MGS GZ and V were laughable to me for the amount of time he had to develop them and he spent even more time on the engine that wasn’t anything revolutionary to me. I mean, GZ was nothing more than a demo and they released that art like $40 I think, probably to further help fund V. He then spent money for Kiefer Sutherland who did nothing for the character, which I think Kojima just wanted because he’s a fan.

Konami just had enough and said this is the deadline and you’re done after this. It’s business, but fans took it personal. I mean look at this Overdose game he’s been doing.,, like when is that ever coming out?

Michiel1989333d ago

I kind of forgot about overdose but yeah exactly my thoughts. He has made some of the best games out there and definitely deserves time to create his new masterpiece, but it's not a bottomless well.

This is pure speculation but I imagine he got around 4 years to make the game excluding pre-production. If after those 4 years the game is nowhere near being done, the relationship will be strained between them one way or another.

about the konami being praised thing, if let's say blizzard announces world of warcraft 2 today I'll be excited as hell for the game, but that doesn't mean my opinion of blizzard changes only a tiny bit cause they're still trash.

Yui_Suzumiya333d ago

Yeah, it was the only MGS I didn't play and this is coming from someone who got back into gaming after skipping a generation due to MGS4 back in 2008. It just seems to be the complete opposite of the MGS I always knew and loved (1-4).

JEECE335d ago

Yes and no. In many ways in was a great game; there's a very strong argument that it has the best gameplay of any MGS game, and that it is one of the more interesting open world "playgrounds" we have gotten, in terms of how the world operates. But as an MGS narrative, it is pretty far down the list, for many reasons.

Storm23334d ago

I don't think there is any argument. The gameplay was incredible. But yeah...disappointed in the rest. Could have been incredible but...well...we all know what happened...

JEECE333d ago

I don't think there is much of one either but apparently some people found the world very boring compared to the more linear structures of other entries so I didn't make a definitive statement in order to acknowledge the outliers.

DarXyde334d ago

The thing about Metal Gear Solid is that the narrative is what determines which is your favorite because the gameplay had ALWAYS improved with every mainline entry. It's amazing.

If it was gameplay, we'd all say The Phantom Pain, but the story is what truly sets them apart.

For me, that's Snake Eater, which is also my favorite game of all time.

JEECE333d ago

That's my favorite too, particularly if we are talking about the subsistence version with camera control.

Fishy Fingers335d ago

For me, best gameplay, worst, everything else.

Storm23334d ago

Yeah...gameplay was so damn good.
