Not really unless you consider 4k. See, PC gamers know the tradeoffs necessary for 4k. Most don't even bother. Microsoft is smart too and won't require 4k as it just sucks up resources. Both Sony and Microsoft will use checkerboard rendering because it looks as good and the power these consoles have is used better in other places. Microsoft will take heat for not having all 4k but the tradeoff will be better visuals. Same on the Pro. The market on the other hand isn't stupid and we know that both companies are asking us to spend tons of money on a new TV and console so we can convince ourselves these products improve gaming. They don't. Switch, PS4 and Xbox One S will continue to provide what we need and will continue to drive the market. Even the Pro which does 4k for $400 Is a lot more expensive when you consider a decent TV upgrade. We could call the mid gen consoles the "preview" consoles and easily win the argument.

fr0sty2909d ago

XBO:X can't even hit 60tps or native 4k in all games, so its power is nowhere near overkill. Its price is, though.

LOGICWINS2908d ago

What fool expected every One X game (or every Pro game for that matter) to be 60fps/native 4K? You can't force all devs to make their games native 4K/60fps. That's a creative decision.

The only thing MS promised is that the One X will be native 4K CAPABLE. It's no different than me getting a pair of $400 Bose headphones and being upset when I listen to low bit rate MP3 files.

Ultimately, no matter how powerful the hardware is, the source code on the software determines how much juice you get out of the hardware.

If you think $499 is to expensive for the One X, then you aren't a tech enthusiast. The product isn't meant for you.

You probably believe $5000 for a 4KTV is overkill as well -__-

Goldby2908d ago

alot of us were expecting native 4k and 30 fps.

they cant even achieve that for 3rd party games. only 1st party....

some overkill that is

DarXyde2908d ago

Hard to say if it's overkill, honestly. On one hand, we can reason that the base model PS4 and Xbox One might be underpowered and Pro/X are more or less what the consoles "should have been" from the beginning. On the other hand, the base models already set the standards and now we're expected to pay launch prices for hardware that should have been, not that it matters much since they would be far more expensive if they launched with their current specs back in 2013.

On the bright side, the bar for the next generation consoles has been raised so, naturally, the next PlayStation and Xbox must outdo One X's specs by enough of a margin. Everyone will have to get creative soon though because I think we're looking at diminishing gains in the near future.

bluefox7552908d ago (Edited 2908d ago )

@logicwins I don't think people were expecting 4k and 60fps, but many of us wanted 1080p/60fps, which is definitely doable on a PC that's considerably cheaper than X1X. Also, with your regard to promising 4k "capable", that's a bit misleading, late last year they were taking shots at PS4 Pro because it used checkerboard rendering and other "caveats" to native 4k, now the word native has disappeared from their language almost entirely. You can't deny that MS overhypes things in a way that borderlines on deception.

Gh05t2908d ago

@Bluefox

Okay, I'll bite.
Please point me in the direction of a considerably cheaper than X1X PC that can do 1080/60, with all the settings at the same level.

I will buy that PC TODAY!

LandoCalrissiano2908d ago

@logicwins, thank you. Said perfectly. Also it's good to add that the one x tech is meant to last at least another 5 years before any kind of upgrade or boost especially when we really can't notice a difference with resolutions higher than 4k, even 1080 to 4k wasn't too big of a jump.

ASSASSYN2908d ago (Edited 2908d ago )

And that has everything to do with the developers, not the hardware of the Xbox one x. And not all checkerboard rendering is the same. The Xbox one x produces a much higher resolution of checkerboarding than the PS4 pro is capable of.

ULTp0ltergeist2908d ago (Edited 2908d ago )

^ says 1080 to 4k isn't too big of a jump ....lmao! comapred to the upscaled 900p vs 1080 its' HUGE!

slasaru012908d ago

This is obviously an US style of news. They HAVE TO exaggerate otherwise people won't buy it

dcbronco2908d ago (Edited 2908d ago )

Damn, Frosty. That was down right fanboyish.

The improvements made with these refreshes will lead to overkill next generation if the power isn't used for something other than visuals though. Once they switch to better CPUs and next generation GPUs, even if that turns out to be something along the lines of Vega, we'll get some ridiculous consoles. In three years we'll definitely get Zen and we should get ten to fifteen teraflops on the GPU. That's going to be some overkill because we aren't going to 8k TVs by then. Hopefully gameplay makes some changes with X. Which gives you a lot for $500.

Skull5212908d ago

It probably is too much power for a Sony fanboy to handle. Tread lightly.

Psh nothing is overkill when it comes to gaming. Higher frames, higher resolution, advanced settings will always be a plus in modern games

kickerz2909d ago

Yea so true. Dumb read that one

Prince_TFK2909d ago

Just a way to stir up the fanboys and generate clicks.

RacerX2908d ago

Just an article for the Sony camp to hate on the X1X

bluefox7552908d ago

If only higher frames were a priority for console games.

ProjectVulcan2908d ago

Today's overkill is tomorrow's barely adequate and the next day's dated.

Less than 6 months after the machine arrives it'll be equivalent to a midrange PC at best. A year after that it'll struggle to match a budget machine.

The more performance the better.

affrogamer2909d ago

For first party developers, no. But for 3rd party developers, they're always gonna build their games to first run on the vanilla consoles and unlike first party developers, they won't spend that much time trying to enhance them for the PRO and X so the quality difference won't be much. In that case all the extra juice in the X would go to waste.

ElementX2909d ago

3rd party build their games to play on PC also and can use those assets. They downgrade assets to run on consoles.

rainslacker2908d ago

They'll make high quality assets to start. Usually more than even a powerful PC can handle. They do this, because it's much easier to downgrade an asset than it is to upgrade it down the road if it's possible. This was a shift in design principal that started near the end of the PS2 generation because it became apparent it was more efficient.

But in game design, there is a target set, and that target is usually the lowest common denominator. The overall game is designed at this spec. The graphics are then downgraded to match that based on what can be achieved with the game design. Then during optimization, they can go back and include better assets if they have the power to do so.

But, here's the caveat. While they can indeed go in and include better assets, it means they do have to sit there and test that to make sure it runs properly with those new assets. It's that testing, and further optimization which isn't going to carry over onto the mid-gens, and what is really being talked about when we see all this, "won't take advantage of the hardware" talk. That kind of stuff takes time, and time cost money. The assets existing in the first place is only a small part of the picture, and honestly, it's the least important part to consider.

PC can include this kind of stuff more readily, because the games themselves aren't built to the hardware, but the OS API's which handle the games rendering pipelines. Because of this, less testing is required, because a level of the hardware layer is removed from the user(Developer). It's also one of those things that may or may not run on different hardware, and actual results may vary. Just because they include the higher quality stuff, it doesn't mean that every card which supposedly can handle that stuff will do so efficiently, and the reason for this is that they never optimize for that stuff, but optimize for the API itself.

FrostXVenom2909d ago

U mean 3rd party lazy devs who will not give much time to XBOX one and pro versions.

sk8ofmnd2908d ago

Esp when the ps5 will prob be unveiled next year.

LandoCalrissiano2908d ago

Even if that's true it won't be true forever. The x is built for the future and the one and the s will eventually be squeezed out until companies are only making the enhancements they weren't before.

ElementX2909d ago

Not overkill when it's announced that it'll play next gen games in a couple years.

Inzo2909d ago

Thats because it is a "next gen" console.

JackBNimble2909d ago

Is that a prediction ?
Even if it does play next gen games it wont be the best console at that point.

ElementX2909d ago

No of course not, but it'll be the cheapest. Nobody would release a console and have it obsolete in a couple years. MS and Sony will release next-gen consoles, but the games will look fine on X if you don't have 4k. Obviously the next gen systems will be more powerful however it won't be a huge leap in capabilities to keep costs reasonable.

Aenea2909d ago

So you're telling me that when the PS5 releases with way better specs that the One X is still 'next-gen'?

Imagine the forums here then, I might need to stock up on lots of popcorn for that!

ElementX2909d ago (Edited 2909d ago )

Obviously the X is much more powerful than current-gen systems. MS releases it now, in two years they drop support for One and the "next-gen" starts with a $299 X and $500 PS5 and next Xbox. If you have a 4k TV then buy the next gen consoles, if you have a 1080p TV then the X will perform just fine. I don't believe next-gen consoles will be vastly superior to the X, prices have to be reasonable. A few TFlops and some more RAM but don't expect double the power of the X.

XanderZane2908d ago

The Switch is next gen. Currently beating Sony & Microsoft in 9th Gen. The PS4 Pro and XB1X are not 9th gen consoles. When will biased gamers learn?

LandoCalrissiano2908d ago

@elementx I completely agree. That's how I see the future happening too. With the limit of 4k (because we can't really see better than that) and the capability to play 4k smoothly, hardware upgrades will be limited. And of course like every console the price will probably drop around 300 eventually.

sk8ofmnd2908d ago

Ps5 wont cost 499... In 2 years when it ships prices will have become much cheaper and it could def have a beefier cpu, gpu, ram, all for 399. But 399-499 is expected for 4k 60 on all games like ms stated "uncompromised 4k". But i think they will shock us ALL with the price like they did the ps4... They are the kings of reading the market and adjusting fire accordingly.

Razzer2908d ago

Next gen? Generations are not what they used to be. I expect consoles will follow the same AMD SOC architecture path that was put in place this gen for some time. Iterations. Not generations.

Eldyraen2908d ago

Generations aren't going anywhere yet though, it's just we will see reiterations between them when tech allows it as well (like 1080p to 4k).

PS5/One2 will happen in the next few years (2020-2021 imo) to start a completely new generation after all--Sony has spoken about it on occasion (no date but they weren't shelving generations anytime soon). Mid gen upgrades are just a stop gate between full generation changes (defined less by hardware changes alone and more a total shift of game development to the new hardware specifically, which is how X is still just a reiteration of the One in other words).

Basically consoles have gone the route of gfx cards: you can see multiple versions of same chipset family ("or generation") but eventually things will change that require a completely new card (like dx version changes as one example). Hopefully though we will also get all of the advantages of more streamlined architecture going forward too, such as full BC support.

So I guess it's how you define generations

Games will require new hardware eventually which is how I define them and why I argued how Pro/X were not next gen from the very beginning. Hardware iterations going forward will be different but games will define generational shifts for me.

Allsystemgamer2908d ago

Not with that processor it won't

segamaniaco2908d ago

That already happened, it is called crossgen games
Ps4 will also run "next-gen" games like 2 years after the ps5 launch
Devs wont waste 100mi of installed ps4 base (at the time of ps5 launch)

Damn, I was hoping for an updated patch. Well let’s see if the rumors are still true, that it’s coming to Switch 2. There’s still hope……I hope

OtterX23h ago(Edited 23h ago)

Yea, this gathering actually sounds like a good time to reveal a remaster PS5/XBox + Switch 2 release. It could be both!

Man, I moved from the Tampa area a bit over 10 years ago, would have loved to be there for this regardless. Even if it's just a gathering of the actors. But this Fall/Holiday season does sound like a good time for a remaster.

MajorLazer18h ago(Edited 18h ago)

Remaster? It just needs a 4K60 patch, no need to remaster anything. Gta 4 needs a remaster.

dmonee1d 8h ago

Everyone just hold up a minute! 🤔 This could still be possible. Perhaps this cast member was told to hush and draw attention away from a big reveal

jznrpg1d 8h ago

He was probably told to stfu
