Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age Preview – Returning to Ivalice in HD | The Koalition

Jakejames Lugo of The Koalition writes: Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age is a return to one of the most interesting entries in the Final Fantasy series, but reinvigorated on the PlayStation 4. If you’re a long-time fan of Square Enix’s ongoing franchise, chances are you’ve played the original release of Final Fantasy XII back on the PlayStation 2. Though divisive in some circles of role-playing game fans, the game marked a changing point in the franchise’s history, mixing up a lot of the traditional aspects and staples of the series. Much like the release of Final Fantasy X HD Remaster, this remaster of Final Fantasy XII comes with polished visuals and a remastered soundtrack, along with a few additions everyone may appreciate.

I will NOT have the time to play the original before this remaster, unfortunately. Even though I'd really like to.

I have yet to get into the Final Fantasy series but definitely would love to jump into it now. Not really sure if this is the best starting point but if anyone has any recommendations on where to start please do let me know.

this entry (FFXII) is a great starting point for a more modern FF title. It has a huge world to explore, and lot of questing. For a more classical FF title, but still retains modern gaming conventions FFX would be the best place to start as it focuses more on character development. Personally if you can get your hands on FFX/FFX-2 remasters i would grab those as well. But you would be fine starting with FFXII especially if you plan on moving forward playing more recent titles like FFXV.

I started off with FFVIII, then FFVII, FFIX, FFX, FF, FF2, FFVI, FFXII...basically all over the place haha.

Thanks for your suggestions on this. Alot of people kept telling me to start with Final Fantasy VII but I'll plan to try this one first. Was definitely intrigued by the trailer and curious to see if it will get me into the series as a whole. Thanks again.

This is actually a perfect starting point. The older games have a typical turn-based battle system that some may find stale. This is, in my opinion, one of the finer FF titles. It has an evolved battle system, great story, excellent soundtrack, and is easy on the eyes, thanks to being remastered.

don't forget about all those hunts! literal days spent doing nothing but hunts. makes me excited just remembering cannot wait.
