The best emulator for Playstation 3, RPCS3, can run Read Dead Redemption for the first time

Red Dead Redemption is a game that was never ported to the PC. And while Rockstar does not plan to ever porting it, PC gamers may one day finally play it thanks to emulation. The team behind the best emulator for Playstation 3, RPCS3, has been working hard on it and as a result of its incredible work, Red Dead Redemption can, for the first time ever, go in-game.

Everything comes to PC eventually. It's just a matter of time.

mixelon2920d ago

You’re absolutely right. It’ll probably be 10 years before we can emulate a PS3 properly though. :(

cartoonx12920d ago

well keep hearing people say this and here i already finish tales of cold steel and ni nu kuni is playable, ever since they got the boast on donations the emulator has speed up quit a lot.
with this donation website those emulators are advaning way faster thn ever, cemu can already play many games with far superior graphics/frames.

Princess_Pilfer2920d ago

Well we still don't have a proper Xbox emulator (though there are only like 3 exclusives anyone cares about on it so that's probably why) so yeah, it can take a while.

I don't think it will take 10 years unless this priject gets abandoned. The reason being, the PS3 has a lot of exclusives people care about.

kneon2920d ago

If Sony decided to do it then it would happen in no time. Now that PS3 is out of production it wouldn't be a bad idea to launch an official emulator. They could make it require a PSN+ account so as to generate some extra revenue to cover the costs. It would then introduce some strictly PC players to the Playstation exclusives and get some of them to buy a PS4.

Death2920d ago

It would be interesting to see what Sony could do with emulation on the Pro if they wanted to.

mixelon2920d ago

I’d bet It’s not fast enough to emulate cell, which is a weird architecture and too different to x64 / x86 hardware for it to work without *massively* faster hardware. PS5 maybe..?

cartoonx12920d ago

dont think so, they have all the documents/code to make it happen, maybe its way lower priority for them, pretty sure if they want they can get it done, microsoft aint magician yet they did it and 360 architect was different too, also they already does the emulation of original xbox on both 360 and one which has a nvidia gpu.

luckytrouble2920d ago

Uh, why is anyone agreeing with cartoonx1? Microsoft didn't use a vastly different architecture due to vastly different hardware last gen, and they still have to recode parts of literally every game that comes to what they call BC. It's BC that basically involves doing part of the remastering process.

Sony can't even do that much because PS3 games are too different. Although it's fun to live with hope, embracing ignorance to say PS3 BC is totally on the way someday if Sony tries just shows a distinct understanding of hardware differences that power can't easily make up at this time.

rainslacker2920d ago

No need to bet. Sony explicitly said this was the case. Anyone who has a cursory knowledge of how computers work, and the processors involved and understand how emulation works to some degree would say the same thing. Almost everyone already knows this is the case and agrees on it.

Any somewhat valid criticism against Sony on this is more about why not do it with PS1 or PS2, which should be possible on the PS4.

This PS3 emulator requires a pretty beefy computer set up. One that is much more than what is in the PS4 or Pro. As it is, this emulator can be hit or miss with a lot of potential to crash.

@cartoon

Sure, Sony could make an emulator. Anyone with the proper processing command information could do so. Whether it actually runs well enough to be suitable for the consumer is a completely different matter.

The 360's architecture wasn't so different. While there is some efficiency lost from RISC to CISC, it's not impossible at all, and the GPU itself is much closer to 360 than the RSX(PS3 GPU) is to the PS4/P, because the RSX relied heavily on the CPU's SPE processors which aren't easy to emulate on the x86.

Grap2920d ago (Edited 2920d ago )

Not gonna happen. Pro too weak to even run PS2 emulator

fenome2920d ago

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought the PS2 classics were being emulated even on the vanilla PS4.

KwietStorm_BLM2920d ago (Edited 2920d ago )

People say some silly things on here regularly.

bluefox7552920d ago (Edited 2920d ago )

No it's not, lol. I ran PS2 emu just fine on my Q6600, and it's an 11 year old CPU. Modern consoles leave a lot to be desired with regard to their CPUs, but it's more than enough to run PS2 games. In fact, PS4 already does run PS2 games, you can buy them at the store.

agent132920d ago (Edited 2920d ago )

This emulator has progressed very well but it still has a long way to make games like RDR and gow 3 playble on pc. PS3's hardware is so complicated that even developers had problems making games for it and emulating it is a very difficult task this emulator is impressive i hope in the near future more games will be playble.

Kallisti2920d ago

You can play Red Dead Redemption on PC already with PS Now

letsa_go2920d ago

In 720p with compression artifacts? No thanks!

TheDreamCorridor2920d ago

Should be fully playable within the year.

Then in 2030 PCs can properly emulate RDR2.

Perjoss2920d ago

If you think and emulated ps3 version of RDR will be fully playable (roughly 30fps with no major glitches) then you must be quite new to the emulation scene.

I hope it's a remake of the 1st game. But it's probably just the PS5 version of Red Dead Redemption 2

OtterX14d ago

I hope a PS5 upgrade launches on the same day as announcement & it costs no more than $10. I already bought the Ultimate Edition once, they got good money from me.

I stopped playing completely 2 years ago until they did 60fps. I really didn't expect it would take this long & I didn't want to start completely over on PC.

GamerRN12d ago (Edited 12d ago )

I've been waiting for 60 to finish the game myself

OtterX12d ago

hopefully we'll know by the end of tomorrow! *crosses fingers*

dmonee13d ago

My wish is that its optimized for current gen machines, with some sort of story expansion. Undead nightmare 2! My 2nd wish is that it just shadow drops on the day of the announcement!.

Lionsguard13d ago

Give me my RDR2 Undead Nightmare already.

PS5/Pro/Switch 2 version of RDR2 seems most likely. I’d love a RDR3 but that seems years away

Cacabunga15d ago

Id be happy for just a 60fps patch

OmegaSoldati15d ago (Edited 15d ago )

Agreed, but at the same time RD2 came out in 2018. Could it be a remake of Red Dead 1?

Spoiler:

Marston died in the end of Red Dead and Red Dead 2 is set before that. Im curious now. What news could it be?

mkis00715d ago

I'm pretty sure the next game will be another prequel as the story really has no where to go as far as being a western after red dead redemption. The next game will end with the ferry boat incident.

Profchaos15d ago (Edited 15d ago )

Their contracts are iron clas if they leak anything legit they are threatened with immense legal action.

My hopes for what this is are minimal its probably a meet and greet with the cast

I dont see why they would be involved in a upgraded version of rdr2 when the dialogue hasn't changed

thorstein15d ago

He seems to have been cleared to do this as he purposely picked up the game, streamed it, and made the announcement.

Personally, I'd rank Pacific Rift in my top 10. It's the best of the series.

badz149119d ago

We desperately need Motorstorm back. Evolution is no more though and this makes me sad

Cacabunga120d ago

Sly Thieves in Time
Stay the Party
Portal 2
Dj Hero
Demon’s Souls
God of war Ascension

rudero119d ago

2 of those games got railed through the “gaming media” during release.
Sly and god of war.
Both of which were fantastic games.

Cacabunga119d ago

Ascension is VERY underrated. Remake please!

Venoxn4g120d ago

Decent list.. I would put the Castle Crashers as well..

1Victor119d ago

Yes it’s a decent list of popular games with a heavy hand on FPS and no Warhawk or Starhawk 2 of the best games (not sale wise) on ps3.
I would buy a Starhawk again even if it didn’t have a graphics upgrade hell I would even take a new one with micro transactions 😱🤯

Profchaos120d ago

I've noticed a recent nostalgia for the PS3 and I don't get it for me it's been my least favourite generation to date and I've been gaming since the NES I just feel like the ambition of the developers outweighed the capabilities of the consoles so I remember lots of games running in the lower end of 20fps range and I remember for the first time ever actually disliking the duelshock 3 and it's curved triggers

Sure there were some standouts and great games but that's the only gen I switched entirely to PC gaming

darthv72119d ago

Maybe the recent nostalgia is because pretty much all of its games are trapped on that console. People want to play them on more modern hardware. hell... if XB can do it then so can Sony. there are competent emulators out there that can run on PS4/5 hardware but Sony just wont let them become official... why is that?

If we are talking least favorite generations (personally) then this one is certainly mine. i had more fun playing 8th, 7th and 6th gen stuff than 9th. And it isnt like i dont have access to do so... the heavy hitters just havent shown up anywhere close to those previous gens. The few here and there just doesnt cut it compared to the likes of constant good games that showed up in 6th, 7th and 8th gen. hell.... I'll even throw in 5th gen has been better than this one.

Profchaos119d ago

I tend to agree there's lots of amazing games locked to the PS3 like GTA IV or mgs 4 but then again my issue was never with the content the PS3 had but rather it's performance many other people have said the PS3 felt like it couldn't walk and chew bubblegum at the same time using PSN and downloading a game could take a few minutes to just start a download.

I typically don't worry all that much about performance I've never had a problem with games that run at 30 but games like crysis 2, Skyrim are good examples where the performance was so unstable you would never even touch the top of the frame cap and the hitching was worse than say Goldeneye on the n64

I think emulation is more than possible on the ps5 though it's just that Sony has no incentive to rush it's development it will likely be a ps6 feature if it ever happens at all.

But yeah the 9th gen has been so bad from a content perspective thats a given I see constant articles where people are frequently expressing their disappointment around the industry as a whole right now to much live service competition that sinks longstanding studios and consumes Devs time less ambition and games cost so much to make they have to play it safe.

The 5th gen was easily better than the 9th we had some all time greats crash, Spyro, Tony hawk, mgs, Mario,64, Goldeneye, Mario kart 64 the list goes on. The 5th gave us a new dimension and I remember being blown away by how much more open gaming had become the 4th gen with the mega drive and SNES was great and very easy to still revisit some of the greatest games of all time came out like earthbound, secret of mana, sonic , Mario world etc but saving our games was still not a standard function or a given so gaming was still evolving but it was very impressive to see some of the tricks Devs used like dithering to give us new experiences those earlier gens limitations bred innovation.

Michiel1989119d ago

if XB can do it so can sony? I didn't know xbox had a cell processor in their older consoles, that's the reason why ps3 was so cool, but also the reason why games are hostage there and no, xbox did nothing similar even though their backward compatbility is good, they always had a similar architecture to their consoles.

darthv72118d ago

Sorry Michael... I guess you missed the obvious part where i said there are already emulators out that do this. and that is what XB is doing... emulators for OG and 360 games. Its why the full slate is not BC on XBO/Series.

coolbeans119d ago (Edited 119d ago )

The list is missing Folklore.
