Middle-Earth Shadow of War - Xbox One X Load Times Are Drastically Reduced Compared To Xbox One

One of the most anticipated games for this year is Middle-Earth: Shadow of War, the sequel to Monolith’s 2014 fresh take on the Lord of the Rings universe. The game is also being billed as one of the flagship titles for Microsoft’s Xbox One X, which will be the most powerful console ever made when it releases- presumably because it will leverage all that power, and put it to some good use.

"The guys who have the X, the biggest thing about it is the load times. On the normal Xbox dev kit, it will take us a few minutes to load one of our worlds. It’s pretty big and takes a while to rev up. The X loads in a few seconds. So that’s a big deal if you’re trying to iterate quickly to get more cycles on something.”

Thats quite a improvement.

Bring on da X.

Bigpappy2889d ago

That's is more amazing than many may want to acknowledge. This game is loading 4K with required assets, like textures and effects.

ABizzel12889d ago

Improved loading is always welcome, especially in games that have notorious load times.

tyasia02889d ago

This has got to be massive exaggeration. Lets be honest guys, when was the last time you played any game that took "minutes" to load?

I believe that X is faster but that it takes minutes on the Xbone and only seconds on the X I mean give me a break. either the Xbone version is the most poorly optimized piece of crap or this guy is blowing smoke.

annoyedgamer2889d ago (Edited 2889d ago )

Last game that took minutes to load was MX vs ATV off road on the PSP. Good times even if I could grow a full beard in the loading time.

aconnellan2889d ago

GTA V is pretty notorious for its loading times, which goes beyond seconds and into minutes.

We will have to wait and see, but it's not unprecedented for a game to take minutes to load

DragonbornZ2889d ago

GTA V, Fallout 4, ME Andromeda. Destiny and Mad Max as well I think.

Kiwi662889d ago

So you've never had a game that takes awhile to load as there are some that do

tyasia02889d ago

O.k. now you guys are just making stuff up or Xbone is more inferior than I thought. I know for a fact that on PS4 FO4 and MEA don't take minutes to load ever, and GTA5 only takes a long time to load into multiplayer and that's due to it's poor networking interface. Loading things in singleplayer doesn't take a minute.

Krysis2889d ago

Witcher 3, just cause 3, gta v, should I carry on?

Kiwi662889d ago (Edited 2889d ago )

Homefront The Revolution is one that takes awhile to load

DragonbornZ2889d ago

Well I do have around 50 mods installed on FO4. It's not like 5 or 10 min, but like 1-2 sometimes. You are right with ME: Andromeda tho now that I think about it. Only the initial loading into the story just takes a few min in my case.

@Krysis I forgot about TW3, but haven't played since around launch. Been trying to play though 1 and 2.

All games will be improved on the Xbox One X in 5 ways.

1. Smoother performance and no screen-tearing
2. Maximum possible resolution on dynamic titles
3. Improved texture filtering
4. Xbox One X GameDVR support
5. Faster loading

The engineers at Microsoft deserve credit.

I won't deny that the designers of the XB1x have done a very good job but you also have to remember that Microsoft can't afford to get over 20 million original XB1 owners offside since all games made for the XB1 have to work on all iterations of that console.

You are also looking at a significant price and performance differential between the XB1 and the XB1x (approx $200 to $300 USD and 1.3Tflops to 6Tflops differentials) compared to the $80 to $100 USD and 1.84Tflops to 4.2Tflops differentials between the PS4 and the PS4pro.

As for faster loading, the XB1x is using SATA3 (same as PS4pro) which has a maximum 600MB/sec throughput compared to SATA2 (300MB/sec) of the PS4 and XB1, however, loading is also dependent on the storage device being used with the generic 5400 rpm hard disk having an approximate (depends on brand) read speed of 80MB/sec to 100+MB/sec. Better performing disks such as a 7200rpm HDD will have 20% better performance and an SSD (average read is 500MB/sec and write is 480MB/sec) is so much faster again and this will definitely benefit from the faster bus.

The downside of an SSD compared to an HHD is the fact that it is three to five times more expensive. Still, if you have the money go for it.

All the other features you have mentioned are possible but allot depends on the game developers.

freshslicepizza2888d ago

Those features I mentioned is the hardware based level which will automatically improve games. What is dependant on the game developers is how far they want to push those games such as 4k and other graphical enhancements.

The usable ram is also significantly increased going from 5GB to 9GB

XiNatsuDragnel2889d ago

Good Job on the X, incredible differences.

Gh05t2889d ago (Edited 2889d ago )

I wish he would have been more specific. He is talking about Dev kits which we know has 4 different settings, Xbox One, Xbox One S, Xbox One X, and full Dev Kit. I want to know the difference between the Xbox One S and Xbox One X load times.

He just said Normal Xbox One dev kits and Xbox One X Dev kit which means they could be using the 24GB of memory rather than the Xbox One X setting which will limit it.

Making this sound way better than it truly will be from a consumer point of view. The headline doesnt mention dev kit and so it all feels misrepresented.

Dont get me wrong I am not saying the game wont load faster but to me this isnt presented in a way that is realistic to real world scenarios, without being more clear.

UnHoly_One2889d ago

I think it is just poor word choice.

Why would he compare a maxed out Dev Kit to a real product?

Yes he was using the Dev Kit, but I am reasonably certain he was talking about what it is like on both consumer versions of the console.

zerocarnage2889d ago

I think he knew what he was talking about and knew what he and the Dev team was doing before he made the comments he has.

Some people just don't want to say yeah man this X1X is shaping up nice and the developers are speaking truth because there actually developing while we are not, they are experiencing this all themselfs. It's like people keep trying to say developers are lieing mostly because they have a fan love for one of the other consoles they own and don't want to see the X1X do well.

Gh05t2889d ago

Yeah, you missed my point completely, but good for you calling me out for being a Sony fanboy. Really nailed me on that one. You know whats worse, fanboys calling anyone who asks questions about the console they like fanboys...

I am not saying HE is lying, I am saying I wish there was a follow up question to make clear what setting the Xbox One X dev kit was running at. And since that question was not asked and his original quote can be taken in different ways its premature to jump to conclusions.

You make us Xbox owners look bad.

shiva12888d ago

@ Gh05t

The follow up question should actually be "what are the load times of pro, ps4 and xbox one and s compared to X".

ichdich2889d ago

Good Job on the X, incredible differences.

4Sh0w2889d ago

No, no, no XiNatsuDragnel said that already.

Top 4 Open World Games With the Best Enemy AI

From Xfire: "Enemy AI is a difficult subject to tackle in video games. Some may argue that current tech isn't advanced enough to implement ultra realistic AI. However, in a world where your phone's AI can book appointments for you, can't it spot a hooded figure hiding in a 'crowd' of four people? In fact, the AI in 2006's The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion was so smart that the developer had to 'dumb' it down for the final release."

Is Warner’s Nemesis patent really ‘gross’? I’m not sure I’d go that far

From VGC: "A few days ago, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) finally agreed to grant Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment a patent on its “Nemesis” system – a procedural engine which Monolith Entertainment, a WB Games subsidiary, used to bring the world of Middle Earth to life in 2014’s Shadow of Mordor and 2017’s Shadow of War."

Is it gross that the patent "effectively makes exclusive to WB Games the concept of…a player-avatar’s interaction with an NPC affecting the parameters of a second NPC"? Gross WB has attained "exclusive rights to a system which on its face appears to describe most games on the market today"? And they did it to "profit off its licensure or exclusivity at a later time"?

Yeah man. Gross is putting it mildly.

Darkborn1568d ago

Exactly, it's a pretty broad mechanic that a ton of games already have or are developing for right now. Now they have to go back to the drawing board to dumb their games down just to be legal or cough up a ton of dough just to release it.

Ryushaa1568d ago

I will not give this site the pleasure (and revenue) of my click, and I will not waste my time reading this opinion piece. However only the headline is enough to know the author is a dumb***. A corporation making a game mechanic exclusive it is gross, to put mildly.
