Breath of the Wild's Season Pass is the Worst DLC Nintendo Has Ever Made

"Nintendo were a bit late getting on the DLC train in the first place, but when they did the results were pleasantly surprising. Breath of the Wild has taken no lessons from their Mario Kart & Smash Bros. DLC successes, bending back into a cheap cash grab that just feels a bit scummy."

new pieces of armor, new difficulty mode and a masters trials which unlocks a reward for your master sword? Never thought that would be considered skimping out, that's a fair bit of content there for the first bit of DLC.

scarface01212870d ago

That's coming on the next dlc pack. Dam does no one use Google anymore?

Sono4212870d ago

I wish people would understand that people want the harder difficulty to be free because the vanilla game is just so easy. How is a game rewarding when it takes almost no effort? Then you hear Nintendo is releasing an actual update that might just make the game challenging, but they put it behind a paywall, how do you not understand people's frustration? If you found the game challenging good for you, but there are plenty of people that had no problem with it whatsoever, ESPECIALLY with the final boss... so easy.

Prince_TFK2870d ago (Edited 2870d ago )

Sono421

Vanilla game is so easy? Lmao did you say that based on your experience of the game or based on Youtube videos? I would love to see you try taking on a Lynel (doesn't have to be a lightning or bombing lynel, just an ordinary one) without getting killed on the first try or without losing a health bar.

Please know that the hard difficulty is not just put in there for difficulty's sake. There are new enemies, regenerating enemies, and all of the existing enemies get upgraded to their more difficult counterparts.

The dlc also include new weapon, new armor, new sidequests, and many other new toys to play around with. Plus you will be getting a story dlc at the end of the year as well.

Please do your research next time. I'm not saying that i'm support DLC, but when others put out even more worse dlcs at even higher price, you can't fault Nintendo for this.

Sono4212870d ago

Kun the fact that you first tried to claim I never played the game kind of says it all and just because you did that i'm not surprised at all that you missed the point, why is the challenge put behind a paywall? I never once said the season pass isn't worth $20 in content. Not once. I asked why is the only challenge put behind a paywall? Also all Lyonels follow an attack pattern each very easy to learn and they leave themselves open to attacking slow mo constantly, not to mention once you get the lightning attack they become even easier. Just please answer, why is something as basic as a harder difficulty (Which comes with all games) put behind a paywall especially when (Yes I will say it again) the vanilla game is SO easy.

Nitrowolf22870d ago

@Sono421

I beat the game and even i thought it was easy.

Just because you died to a new enemy the 1st time doesnt make it hard, plenty of people die in games to fighting a boss their first time or an enemy, yiu just gotta learn the mechanics

Neonridr2870d ago

DLC #2 has the expansion quest lines.

kreate2870d ago

There's really no need to argue. Just don't buy season pass.

septemberindecember2870d ago

@Sono421

"Also all Lyonels follow an attack pattern each very easy to learn and they leave themselves open to attacking slow mo constantly"

Do you even know what you have to do in order to instigate slo-mo attacking? They don't just "leave themselves open"...you have to time it REALLY well. The lyonels aren't as easy as some Youtube people would lead you to believe. If you watched some people play Dark Souls on Youtube you could get that same impression.

Long story short, the game isn't "SO easy". And based upon that one quote that you provided right there I don't believe that you've actually played the game (or at least you haven't gone very far if you have played it).

Goldby2870d ago

@sept

Yet dark souls includes upwards of 10 difficulty increases.

And sorry to say man, timing is easy, takes some practice but timing blocks, dodges and anything like that is easy after enough practice.

There's people doing 1 hit visceral kills on bosses in bloodborne based on timing

septemberindecember2870d ago

@Goldby

I've beat Dark Souls a number of times and there are no difficulty levels. You are confusing it for New Game +, which is different.

"And sorry to say man, timing is easy, takes some practice but timing blocks, dodges and anything like that is easy after enough practice. There's people doing 1 hit visceral kills on bosses in bloodborne based on timing"

So, does that make Bloodborne easy too? Or any Souls game for that matter? Timing can be had with practice and patience. In time you can "git gud" with any game, but that doesn't make a game "SO easy".

Kosic2870d ago

Comparing to other games. I wouldn't say it's great dlc content.

Difficulty + mode and you have to pay for it... can't see how that's something you can defend.

New skins, sure I'll let that slide as a microtransaction.
Unsure how long master of trials is, if under an hour it's a rip off.

The 10th Rider2870d ago (Edited 2870d ago )

The trials are around 4 hours, if you can make it through without dying at all (most people I've seen have died). Dying once can add a substantial amount of time it takes to complete them since there's only certain "checkpoint" floors.

EDIT: Took this guy around 4 hours without dying https://www.youtube.com/wat...

spartan112g2870d ago

Good thing this isn't the only part of the DLC. It's only the first of two drops.

Vegamyster2870d ago

The difficulty & Hero path map feature should be free, i haven't played the Master Trails so i dunno how good that is yet. I wouldn't call it terrible DLC since the big one is yet to release which they said will include a new story, dungeon & challenges that is included in the $20 price tag.

Kosic2870d ago

@Vegamyster you can't defend Dlc#1 with "Well, DLC 2 will be bigger."

My opinion is based on the current DLC that is out, it looks lacking in content and half off it should've been free or there from the start. When the 2nd DLC comes out, we will see what it's all about at that time.

The 10th Rider2870d ago

Ah, N4G. Where you can respond to someone's musings about something's length with information along with a source and everyone still disagrees.

Stay classy, N4G.

TKCMuzzer2870d ago

You should never have to pay for a difficulty mode in any game, should be a standard feature.

TekoIie2869d ago

@kosic

"you can't defend Dlc#1 with "Well, DLC 2 will be bigger."

Actually you kind of have to considering that these two packs can not be bought separately.

I think it costs about £17.99 in the UK? If so the question is how do we break down the value of whats in DLC #1 to determine whether the expansion pack is worth the asking price.

Of course the problem is that we have no idea what the champions ballad dlc will contain so until then it's anyone's guess.

thekhurg2870d ago

CD Projekt Red gave that type of content away for free.

Just saying...

Nodoze2870d ago

Nintendo is getting greedy.

InKnight7s2870d ago

Btw overwatch gave everything fore more than 1 year for free in time there are games start to do 2 season passes for per game.

2870d ago
spartan112g2870d ago

DLC for multiplayer games is a lot different than DLC for singleplayer games. They aren't funding it via people being loot boxes during seasonal events (Overwatch). Also, even the Witcher charged for story DLC, which is what this pack is giving later.

Stevonidas2870d ago

You mean the "free" stuff that CDPR had already made but merely cut from the retail release to let trickle out over the next few months?

Yeah, apples and oranges there, pal.

OpenGL2870d ago

@MIKE702KA

That's an interesting take because BOTW ran pretty poorly on the Nintendo Switch in docked mode until patch 1.1.1 came out.

thekhurg2870d ago

@mike

Nope. It was not "very buggy". It had the standard amount of issues for a gigantic open world RPG.

But it also had thousands of lines of spoken dialog, highly unique quests, an incredible story, solid combat, etc... Plus it launched on three different platforms with a smaller developer budget.

Yet they still gave away what Nintendo is charging for on this DLC. Yeah....

Bahamut2870d ago (Edited 2870d ago )

Well... CD Projekt Red was EXCEPTIONALLY generous. Kinda unfair to hold Nintendo to that standard when no one else is that generous. That being said, the DLC sounds pretty lame, they definitely could've done better.

Bahamut2870d ago

@InKnight7s

Yeah but Overwatch is a Free-to-Play game that they charge people full price for. Their lootbox system is shady, greedy, and garbage. You shouldn't use them as an example.

Bjorn-c-blocker2869d ago

Zelda is a 100 times better game than the witcher. The witcher is close to trash for game play. It doesn't matter how much content you add if the content is not fun to play and involves pushing forward to a marker to press a button followed by a bad combat sequence and another a marker followed by another walking around session.. The game is so bad.

DrumBeat2869d ago

Another game Breath of The Wild doesn't hold a candle to. Witcher 3.

CrimsonWing692870d ago

So people complain about Armor DLC (Oblivion), people complain about difficulty being DLC (Metro), and some challenges (whoop dee damn doo doo). Yet when Zelda does it it's considered a fair bit of content?

Let's put it this way, I'm glad Dark Souls' DLC wasn't just armor, a new difficulty, and challenges--er excuse me, trials.

Nintendo can do no wrong to some people, I guess.

spartan112g2870d ago

Maybe because those are all just small parts of this overall pack while those were the entire pack in those cases. There's still more coming.

Neonridr2870d ago

$20 for all of that plus a story expansion later this year. Not a bad deal to me. Maybe you have different standards but most games nowadays charge $20 for a few extra MP maps.

jaymacx2870d ago

20 bucks is for both packs combined. This pack is only the first (half) sort of. The second half is supposedly much bigger. I can agree that for some people this DLC may seem small but other games make you pay way more for less. Plenty of people say that many of these offerings should have been free. However this game is already jam packed full of content. I played well over 100 hours. That is well over 60 bucks worth. I would put Persona 5 in the same category, some of its DLC felt cash grabby but I won't complain about it because the game is so complete.

spartan112g2870d ago

Finally! Someone who knows reason.

Zeldafan642870d ago

I've got over 200 hours in BotW. $20 more for everything they're offering in the DLC is perfectly reasonable to me.

spartan112g2870d ago

I feel like the Nintendo haters came out with no actual understanding of how the DLC works to try to push their own agenda.

F4ctory_Reset2870d ago

I feel Nintendo can do no wrong in your eyes.

Do I believe you get great value for your money with this season pass? Yes.
(Trials + new story dlc will be worth the $20)
Do I believe they should hide the difficulty behind the season pass? Nope.

But the worst part is something I didn't even see people complain about yet: the fact you can't get both DLC packs seperately. It's either getting the season pass or not getting anything at all.

Kosic2870d ago (Edited 2870d ago )

We aren't Nintendo haters. We are looking at what's being given out for a cost, compared to things which should've been in the game already, or something that I've missed in games of old, where you can actually unlock something.

"Hero's Path Mode
This new map feature shows the path Link has walked through Hyrule from the last 200 hours of gameplay. Use the time tracker bar to see where you've spent the most time and where you have yet to explore. There's bound to be more adventures and maybe a shrine or two on the road less traveled."

Should there really be a cost? Shouldn't this be something that's unlockable?

"Master Mode
In Master Mode, enemies gradually regain health, so take them out as quickly as possible. All enemies are also powered up by one level. For example, Red Bokoblins in Normal mode are now Blue Bokoblins. Enemies can also have higher maximum levels than they would in Normal mode. Look up, and you may also find enemies and treasure chests in the sky!"

Difficulty + mode
Should this really be part of DLC and not just patched in for free?

"Travel Medallion
Somewhere in the world, there is a chest with a Travel Medallion inside. When you use this, you can register your current location as a fast travel point on the map. You can only register one location using the Travel Medallion."

Again, shouldn't this be an unlockable item?

Trial of the sword, additional armour sets, and a mask. I would honestly say are what you expect in DLC content. The rest are pathetic filler additions.

Nintendo are learning the ways of DLC, and so far, it's pretty poor for BOTW.

Nu2870d ago

This DLC isn't worth $20

frostypants2870d ago (Edited 2870d ago )

New armor? Sounds like the sort of thing Witcher 3 would get for free...

New difficulty mode? You're fine with paying for what amounts to some slider adjustments on the back end?

Masters trials? Depends on the content and the rewards I guess. Nothing you said sounds that convincing though.

NecoTehSergal2870d ago

Difficulty levels being put behind a Paywall, people - think about this for a minute.

Nintendo made DLC out of DIFFICULTY LEVELS. It'd be like if you played Doom and each difficulty you wanted to play was $2-5. xDDD Don't defend Nintendo like sheep, get angry - that's your job as a customer to tell companies to stop their crap when they've gone too far. Nintendo putting a new difficulty level in a season pass, behind DLC, is a HUGE issue.

Zeldafan642868d ago

Trying to turn Nintendo fans against the company is really pathetic. Making a mountain out of a molehill is a Nintendo hater's favorite pastime. When BotW wins game of the year I'm gonna really enjoy seeing all you guys complaining about it.

Kyizen2870d ago

A hard difficulty as DLC...that ia scummy!

Bahamut2870d ago

Idk, sounds like that all should have been added in a free patch. DLC should come in the form of hefty EXPANSIONS that include new dungeons, new story, new enemies, etc. Anything less than that is just lame and shouldn't cost much, if anything at all.

showtimefolks2870d ago

Neo

What's next 2nd play through will not be considered dlc

Come on man to Nintendo fans Nintendo can do whatever and they will be defended regardless

CaptainObvious8782870d ago

Ninty fans will still eat this up and ninty know this.

Scatpants2870d ago

That's totally skimping. It's just about the least they could do.

HellzAssassin2870d ago

Hmm....
Well... let's see. Nioh has had at least 10-12 updates.
DLC #1 was $10 ($25 for season pass)
Added at least 10 new missions
New enemies/bosses
New difficulty
Entirely new weapon (with full skill tree)
Increasing maximum divine weapon & spirit levels
Entirely new weapon class with a full skill set
New armour

And FREE updates adding PVP, new crafting upgrades and materials, weapons, armour, balancing, "in-game achievements, which you can use to unlock bonuses, etc.
Talk about good support..
I'd say 95% of most DLC out there is complete shit, with the exception of a few games; Dying Light, Bloodbourne, Nioh to name a few.

So yes, in retrospect that first DLC for Breath of the Wild sucks.

Zeldafan642868d ago

The main portion of the DLC isn't out yet. New story DLC and a new dungeon are well worth $20 for me alone, the other stuff is just a bonus.

rocketpanda2869d ago

Hardly enough content to justify the price. Half of the content is modes that should be in the game like difficulty. Selling a new difficult as dlc, gtfo! The Metro developers even did that an got heavily criticised for it.

Even if you only want certain dlc things, too bad! You have to buy the season pass because Nintendo!

I remember Nioh offering new difficulties (note plural) as free patch updates. Story expansion, weaspons and armour is the actual dlc you'll pay for. Shoving a new paid mode out knowing that salivating Nintendo diehard will lap it up and make excuses for it that it's great is quite sad.

Zeldafan642868d ago

BotW is going to win game of the year and you're upset about it, too bad. I think your anger is quite funny.

Dragonscale2869d ago

godashram2871d ago

If you see it at $20 for just the content released today, then yes, it's bad.... but as a season pass, there is more to come...well, 1 more to be exact. If seen as $10 per pack, which is what it technically is, it's not so bad. Even better if you find an eshop giftcard on sale.

EddieNX 2870d ago

Nailed it. Its amazing DLC for 10$ DEFINITELY worth it and I cant wait for next pack. This article is BS. i'd describe the master trials as 'survival dark souls'.

Bahamut2870d ago

Slow down, he didn't put that much emphasis on it. $10 is a relatively fair price, but not OMG DEFINITELY WORTH IT, just... slow down.

Bjorn-c-blocker2869d ago

It is more like a $5 dollar pack and a $15 dollar pack.. we just got the $5 pack.

SirBradders2870d ago

£20 for thee season pass is not bad at all for what they have given.

COD sell A! single weapon skin for £2 just for comparison.

Sono4212870d ago

COD has also given you 4 new weapons(more if you include zombies weapons), 16 new maps, and 4 new Zombies maps for $40 before.. don't cherry pick the worst deal to try to justify this.

Ricegum2870d ago

Yeah. I don't get why people bring up Cod, granted the Variety map pack fiasco is a bit much but the content they offer for DLC isn't all that bad. Best example for DLC value is Gearbox with the Borderlands series. That was some great value in my opinion.

DanteVFenris6662870d ago

That sounds even worst... that's almost the price of a full game just for some new maps

Sono4212870d ago

Dante in what way is that worse? 20 maps, 4 of those come with their own mini story and new weapons (Zombies) and 4 new weapons for online, and it's only double the Zelda season pass but easily double the amount of content, and keep in mind this is from activision the company known for terrible antics, so when they are looking better or let's just say for arguments sake they equate to the same value, how does that make Nintendo look? Being close to one of the worst companies in the industry.

SirBradders2870d ago

Sono421 Now lets compare that £40 to Battlefield Season Pass and see where the comparison takes you.
:-D

Bahamut2870d ago

CD Projekt Red, Rockstar, and Blizzard are about the only ones who get it right. Ah, well, most of the time, anyway. Blizz has some exceptions ($15 for Necromancer??).

rocketpanda2869d ago

And guess what, you can choose to buy that single skin, you don't need to buy a whole season pass and waste your money because they decided to bundle nonsense with the item you actually want.

The 10th Rider2870d ago (Edited 2870d ago )

I think some of the features should have been free, such as the hero's path mode and traveler's medallion. When I first heard about Master Mode I had thought that should have been originally included, but after hearing about some of the stuff they did with it I do think it's fair to include it in the DLC. The trail of the swords is actually pretty substantial (easily 2-4 hours if you beat it without dying). The extra armors are basically a skin pack that would be $4-6 on their own. On top of that this is just the first batch of DLC and the second batch has been suspected to be more substantial since they were first revealed.

Stevonidas2870d ago

$80 ($60 for game, $20 for Expansion) for the complete Breath of the Wild experience is more than fair. Stop being cheap, people.

EddieNX 2870d ago

Youre getting downvoted by assholes who havent played what is easily one of the best games ever made.

jaycptza2870d ago

or people that don't take kindly to being called cheap. Lets face it the 1st Part of the DLC is lack luster

_-EDMIX-_2870d ago

???

You need to seriously relax. You legit can't take that people disagree with you. I own this game on Wii U.

I don't agree with ti being "the best games ever made" I don't even think its the best ZELDA ever made.

It abuses the open world to death, you have fields of just emptiness, the dungeons might be the worst ever featured in a Zelda game, they bosses suck, so many things suck about this game.

I literally only liked the small puzzle dungeons, last boss.......thats it. Can't roll, no hook shot, stupid story, it was a meh Zelda for me. I like Twilight Princess, Wind Waker, I'd say I like even Majora's Mask more.

Not everyone agrees that this is the "best games ever" even those that played it. Not ALL are part of the cult bud. Relax.

I don't see much real reason for anyone to buy this DLC, I'm not buying this crap. I got my fill of this game and moved on.

Just not a lot of quality content. SOooooooooooo much filler, this is the most filler Zelda game I've ever played.

I'm not spending 200 hours collecting crap, that isn't quality to me.

SirBradders2869d ago

No one is it one the best games ever made. This is coming from someone who loves open world RPG's and would of never picked up a Switch prior to seeing all the raving reviews.

It does a lot of things right but at the same time does a lot of basic things wrong which does not warrant a 10/10, it is pushing a 8.5 / 9 at most.

No Voice acting, Hardly anything in the open world other than Shrines and them leaf things. (after 30 hours of play i expected to at least stumble on a proper dungeon or two. Breakable Weapons but no crafting (I'm sorry but this should have been reserved for Master mode), No skill tree or talent system, Key items locked out by Amiibos, Fast travel locked to shrines (That's just lazy) and Link doesn't say a word.

I can go on and list all the things right with it but i am sure you can to.

Nintendo fans must have a low bar set when it comes to open world games because i can name a few which blow it out the Water. Comparing to the most recent Horizon i felt that Horizon hit the sweet spot in which 50-60 hours you have seen and done everything in such a vast space. So far BOTW feels like it will keep me longer only due to the fact it takes so long to get anywhere i.e. slow movement speed, poor horse mechanics and poorly designed World with stamina being a big issue to climbing over simple hills.

InTheZoneAC2870d ago

then I compare to quality games who provide more in game on a smaller budge and give us for free what Nintendo is charging, and on top of that those other DLCs are almost a new games worth of content.

How did you manage to permanently fix shades to yourself?

Zeldafan642870d ago (Edited 2870d ago )

Superchiller - how many alt accounts do you have?

I've put over 200 hours into BotW and still haven't even done 80 shrines yet. I've only unlocked 11 of the 18 memories and gotten just 118 Korok Seeds. You're just mad because you know BotW is going to win game of the year.

InTheZoneAC2870d ago

#1, who is superchiller, kid?
#2, I have botw on the wii u and I won't be mad if it wins goty, but GoTY might go to Dragon Ball FighterZ

Dalailana2870d ago

That's one part of the dlc. Trail of the sword is like 5 hours long if you don't die.

That's a lot of content for 10$

rocketpanda2869d ago

This isn't an expansion though, that come so it later and you have no idea what it is at this point?

It's not about being cheap, it is about what you get for what you pay for! I have no qualms about buying dlc, but not season passes for future content I have no idea about or will include regardless hos good the base game is. Or even preorder BS to get exclusive story, character or item.

You said it yourself, you have to spend extra to get the complete experience. How sad is that when you need to pay more to get the the complete experience for any game.

I generally agree with the author here. However, if I had to point out a single game as the 'anti-Breath of the Wild,' that would be Majora's Mask. Pretty much everything in that game is interconnected, relies on something that the player must have done previously, is timed, and can be considered a puzzle in itself.
