Why The Xbox One X Will Fail

The Xbox One X is an upcoming console from Microsoft that is set to serve as a more powerful version of the Xbox One. On paper, this move makes sense. Sony already released the PlayStation 4 Pro so, naturally, Microsoft would want to compete. However, their updated console is going a little overboard.

Fail is a hard word. The reality is that the X isnt for the casuals and it wont sell 1 million each month, but i think Microsoft knows that.

Its console for gamers with lots of Money that wont have problems spending 499, because the rest will buy the S, because the 199 price is perfect, you get all the same games at lower rez, but higher rez doesnt mean more fun playing!

TFJWM2920d ago (Edited 2920d ago )

The thing is if the x1x to x1s/xbo sells at the same rate that the pro is to ps4 that is a hard fail and they won't come close to making their money back on it.

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen2920d ago (Edited 2920d ago )

Fail isn't the right word to use for the Xbox One X because I believe it's part of a new strategy by Microsoft. I think they're trying to integrate Xbox with Windows gaming, while avoiding direct competition with Sony by releasing hardware early. I also believe that the Xbox One X will carry over into next gen with price drops and the next Xbox console (IF THERE IS ONE) will release 2 to 3 years after the release of the PS5. In my opinion, if this new strategy fails to take hold (Multiplats + Power every 3 - 5 years) Microsoft will choose to abandon hardware iterations all together and Xbox Live will become a service... An all digital service.

nitus102920d ago (Edited 2920d ago )

I think the current PS4pro to PS4slim is about 1 in 5 consoles sold (ie. 20%). http://au.ign.com/articles/...

Come November this year when the XB1x releases I would not be surprised if the XB1slim and the PS4slim are around $200 to $250 USD with a selection of attractive (subjective) games. It is also quite possible that the PS4pro will be around the $350 USD mark with a selection of games (maybe one to three depending on the bundle).

This puts the XB1x at a considerable disadvantage monetary wise and even just considering the XBox ecosystem you will most likely be looking at a $250 to $300 USD differential and that is not taking into account a couple of pack-in games.

All that said I personally think the XB1x technical specs are very good for the price and people will buy it but in what ratio of XB1x to XB1slim I don't know since my crystal ball is in the wash at the moment. 🙂

zerocarnage2920d ago

What so your actually saying Sony failed with the pro and hard also with the sales they have??

don't be so silly, but you won't admit that Sony have failed with the pro now will you.

DJStotty2920d ago

Money is made on software, rarely/if ever on hardware sales. Most consoles are sold at a loss/even/small profit

Remember how everyone was talking shit about the elite controller being so expensive?

Then ms couldnt stock enough of them as they kept selling by the truck loads.

There is a market for premium products like this.

Not everyone is poor or simply wanting the cheapest possible item.

Some people actually like quality products and are willing to pay.

MegamanXXX2920d ago (Edited 2920d ago )

This is not $150 like a controller this is $500 dollars lol. It's a big difference

jmetalhead778122920d ago

@megaman

If people like myself self are willing to pay $150 for a controller, they're definitely willing to pay $500 for a console. The Elite controller is 2.5 x the cost of a regular controller. By the same comparison, the XB1X would be $625-$750. So, you're actually getting a bargain with the XB1X

luckytrouble2920d ago (Edited 2920d ago )

Although MegamanXXX put it poorly, there is a valid nugget buried in there. As gamers, we tend to overlook the controller market, but consider how many controllers you buy for a system and the amount more you would pay for a truly functional, comfortable controller. It can make the difference between a comfortable couple of hours of gaming and a comfortable binge session. Although it was aimed at enthusiasts, the Elite controller did not only appeal to them. It appealed to gamers in general and was probably the #1 recommended controller for those seeking a new one when they first launched.

The One X isn't comparable to the Xbox Elite Controller. The console market is swamped, and although you'll buy multiple controllers for a console, you won't buy multiple consoles for a controller. The Xbox One X doesn't have the selling power of the Elite controller because, as an accessory, even if expensive as an accessory, it came across as a valuable and optional improvement that required no further work, effort, or trade ins to enjoy.

On the other hand, the actual Xbox One only sells okay even at a lower price point than the PS4, often offering all kinds of bundles, and more power won't fix that. This doesn't appeal to both enthusiasts and casual gamers. This won't be an easy sell in the game store as obviously worth it compared to the substantially cheaper Xbox One S. The Xbox One X is truly an enthusiasts only game console, and it just won't have the selling power to change the console war. There is nothing there for the casual gamer.

JasonKCK2920d ago

MegamanXXX odd, PSVR cost $499 without a console and many on this site consider that a success.

MegamanXXX2920d ago (Edited 2920d ago )

@JasonKCK
Maybe because of Sony install base helped with that. But I didn't know it was a success. Just read Luckytrouble comment because it's facts.

DARK_WOLF2920d ago (Edited 2920d ago )

Luckytroubles comment is not facts.

How is this any different to the elite controllers 'premium' catagory.

Most people will 'upgrade' their console and use their elite controller with it.

Say what you want but as an xbox gamer ive had 4 years of this 900p low quality bullshit.

Its about time xbox got back to POWER and i cant wait to upgrade. Its time.

There are MANY more who feel the same. And im sure alot more who skipped xb1 because of it. Not to mention all the core gamers who want the best performing console and switched to ps4 because it had an edge.

They will switch right back.

The console wont be $500 forever. Things change.

Rhythmattic2920d ago

JasonKCK
But you can't play PSVR games without a PSVR, But you can Play Xbox X games with a One or PC..
I don't really think its a good comparison you used.

Mulando2920d ago

It is always a question whether you want so sell 10m or 1m a year.
Xbox one x is planned to sell 17m by 2020. In my opinion this is realistic and not to optimistic.
It is like with the PS4 pro in 1-2 years, those will sell regular and the base PS4 might not even get produced anymore.

JasonKCK2920d ago

Rhythmattic the subject is "price" not what games can be played on what unit. Every PS fan on this site considers the price of PSVR to be fine but when it comes to X1X it's suddenly "too high". You get nearly twice the power for $100 more with X1X and more features. The $499 for any PS product is perfectly acceptable but not for anyone else. Paying attention yet?

CorndogBurglar2920d ago (Edited 2920d ago )

@ Mmmmmmmmmyummy and Jmetalhead

Lets not confuse "willingness" with "ability".

$150 is much more attainable for people than $500.

Just about anyone with a job can scrounge up $150 a month. $500 is a different story. It doesn't matter if its a controller or console we're talking about. $500 is a LOT of money to come up with. Assuming you're not some kid with no responsibilities.

Gh05t2920d ago

@corndog

So people can come up with the $350 - $400 for a PS4 pro and it's easy to come up with $150 a month if you have a job... So all you are saying is wait a month longer and it should be easy to come up with the money for a One X.

You make it sound like people are buying a new console every month. Save $100 a month since $150 is easy and buy it when it comes out.

Also you don't have to be a child with no responsibility to he able to afford $500. Many hobbies are WAY more expensive. My $500 every few years pales in comparison to the amount of money other hobbies cost.

segamaniaco2920d ago

Still didnt reach the mass market
So its niche like XoX

morganfell2920d ago

"The console wont be $500 forever. Things change."

This.

Because the PS4, the PS4 Pro will get massive price drops this fall/holiday. It is going to be absolutely ugly. Even PSVR is going to see a price cut.

dp2774072920d ago

Yea but I bought two Elite controllers for my PS4's at the time so not like every Xbox only player/owner bought em.

KillBill2920d ago

Yep... and when they said nobody would be dumb enough to pay for a brand new iPhone when a new one was just released the year before.

Rhythmattic2919d ago (Edited 2919d ago )

JasonKCK
If its about price.. I agree the X is excellent value... And so are all the MS/Somy consoles....
Im just suggesting PSVR is not comparable to an X. price or not.
In simple terms, Its like comparing a console to a TV.

Well said it's not for mass market or casuals but I'm sure MS will just add each sale to its overall sales and say they have a bigger install base. It is true 4k doesn't mean a better game or more fun. Trouble is 60fps would make a better game. I think that is for real next gen systems

Tell us more about the fail. So interesting. /s

BiggerBoss2920d ago

Well, the Xbox is already selling WAY less than the Ps4. It has WAY less games than the Ps4 too. And now MS is releasing a new XBoX that's more expensive than the Ps4 while still having WAY less games.

Nah, it's gonna work out great for them.

Bigpappy2920d ago (Edited 2920d ago )

Superior hardware on the scale of X1X would and should cost more despite games count.
We are talking hardware quality here. Games sold separately.

AngelicIceDiamond2921d ago

"Power: I'm not entirely sure that matters. I truly don't think third-party developers are going to go out of their way to make sure the Xbox One X version is superior to the PlayStation 4 Pro version."

I most certainly hope they would. They did it with PS4 and X1 why would they stop now with these consoles? Funny how the the power is " doesn't matter" narrative is switched. I never switched my narrative on power 4 years back and don't plan on switching this goes for Sony and MS fanboys switching narrative roles its either power doesn't matter or it does pick one and stick with it.

AustinFern2920d ago

They did with the PS4 and Xbox One because they were the start of a new generation, this is not. I cod be wrong, but I just don't think devs will bother going beyond what the PS4 Pro can manage.

yeahright22920d ago

But the devs didn't do that because the PS4 was more powerful. they did that because they saw the PS4 version of games selling more so they developed with it in mind first. Just like did with the 360. Just look at how broken so many PC games end up being and if you're talking power, PC wins hands down.
As for the "power doesn't matter" that point was missed on the xbox side. They took it as PS4 was selling more because it was more powerful, but it wasn't that. It was more powerful for less money. Value proposition. It made MS look like they were nickel and diming. The power argument back in the day was way more about perception that actual stats. Hell, I still say Ryse looks better than the majority of games this gen. The power gap didn't hurt it one bit.

UnHoly_One2920d ago

With how reportedly easy it is to port to X1X, it shouldn't even be hard for them to take advantage of.

We aren't talking about adding features and making the whole game different here. Higher res, better framerate, or better textures... The same stuff they do for PC versions of games.

Should be super easy. I expect to see the vast majority of games noticeably superior on X1X vs PS4Pro.

But honestly, to me, it doesn't really matter. They are going to be superior to the base X1, and that's all that really matters. I'm going from an Xbox to a better Xbox. How it compares to PS4 is irrelevant except for "console war" arguments.

PhoenixUp2921d ago

It's just an iterative console, what's with all this pressure

jrshankill2920d ago

Exactly. There is no company gamble here at all, and no pressure for anyone to update. It's a luxury item.

lunatic00012920d ago (Edited 2920d ago )

That is what I'm saying...people are acting like this is do or die by Microsoft...this console was made for a specific group...not the mass market who will buy the Xbox one s...same goes for the PS4 pro...don't get why so many articles like this cone out???

Lennoxb632921d ago

It will only fail to those who have already set unrealistic expectations for it. Like catching up to the PS4 in sales or whatnot. It was never meant to be a breakout success. Though MS would be happy if it was.

It’s really old now. All great MMOs decline.

Also who wants to keep paying a monthly fee every month, there are other options like Guild Wars 2 😁with no monthly fee and while not that many people overall compared to FF XIV, it did increase to about 21 mil now.

kaewcha7341h ago

Looks like Square Enix is self-aware but still stuck in place, they see the player drop and apologize for the bugs, but nothing really changes. Shame, FFXIV used to be the gold standard

Servbot4120m ago

My entire free company has stopped playing. The writing has consistently gotten worse and the content is sparse and lacking; unless you are a hardcore player there's very little for you to do. They are over-catering to the people who will grind three+ times a week on a single fight for multiple months when the playerbase by large doesn't want that sort of content. Square needs to dedicate more resources to the game instead of wasting them on mobile and other live service slop.
