Final Fantasy XIV Could Appear on Xbox One, But Only If It Has Cross-Play Support

Final Fantasy XIV has been doing the rounds on PlayStation 4 and PC for years, but now the game's director Naoki Yoshida has expressed interest in bringing the MMORPG to Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, with meetings already being held with Xbox boss Phil Spencer regarding the possibility.

There is one fairly major condition in order for Final Fantasy XIV to appear on Xbox One, though, and that's that "the game has to have the capability of cross-platform play," Yoshida revealed to Kotaku. "We would love for as many players to be on FFXIV as possible," he added, stating that "conversations have been had with Phil Spencer of Microsoft, and the upper management teams of Nintendo."

It would be ironic if Sony didn't agree, then what, cancel the PS4 version while having it run on Switch, Xbox One and PC? Knowing Sony they would just sign a deal to keep it on PC and PS4.

You never know, Sony are also willing to piss off the Minecraft community which I imagine is fairly substancial who won't be getting the Bedrock Engine edition and be part of the Better Together update.

As if they are going to shut off the service for millions of people who bought the game and are paying a subscription just to appease Microsoft.

First off Sony has had the game for years dating back to PS3. Second PlayStation has more users than both Microsoft and Nintendo combined. Third Microsoft has limited fan support for Japanese games in general, FF15 sold less than 15% of what it sold on PS4. Fourth SE would be betraying their Japanese fan-base which obviously prefers PS4 to Xbox.

Now I am not saying an agreement shouldn't be reached, but the idea that there will ever be a cancellation of service on PlayStation in order to facilitate Microsoft is absolutely absurd.

The same story from Kotaku states that Naoki Yoshida, the game's director, wants all platforms to have cross play.

He wants Xbox, Switch and PS to be able to cross play with each other. He has already spoken to Phil and the upper management at Nintendo. I suspect with recent events that they would be more than happy to do so, unfortunately the same probably won't be true for Sony as they aren't as willing to have crossplay between consoles.

I'm pretty sure they'll agree as long as PS users are not forced to sign into XBL to play, which is a complete pile of crap IMO, and it works the other way too, I wouldn't expect XB or Nin users to be forced to sign into a PSN account to play on there own console.

While I do agree with this in part, Minecraft/Mojang is technically first party game now so I think that is a little different than a 3rd party game and just the way things have been going and listening to Phil in interviews and just watching Mike Ybarra all the time on Mixer play games and hear him talk(Hes playing right now if hes back from lunch), I don't think itll ever be a mandatory thing, imo, unless its say a first party game like Minecraft and they can do whatever they want with it

Sony said no to Pure Chess, Microsoft wasn't even involved with that game. It was bwteen Nintendo and Sony and they said no. Rocket League, Sony said no. It's Sony, can you guys not figure it out yet?

I'm going to disagree...you don't need to log in to Live when playing Minecraft for PS4 and the only reason that Live was required for Switch could have been because of how new or early the Switch online is.

For all we know MS implemented this procedure because they already knew Sony backed out.

Regardless, there has been many other examples of Sony not willing to do crossplay with consoles, it's beyond silly to keep bringing up Minecraft.

I'm more than sure that MS will finally accept cross play for FF14 now. I don't understand why they didn't in the first place. FF11 was cross play on 360 so it should be on X1. Either way I just got back into the game when stormblood dropped and if anyone is on Goblin server and wants to play hit me up.

Am I wrong in thinking that you don't need PS+ to play this as it has its own subscription? If that is the case then why would sony need to approve anything? I would be more annoyed having to sign into an xbox live account as well as the square enix account just to have cross platform play

This is where Microsoft proves it commitment to cross play, FF14 is an independent online service so can operate outside PSN and Xbox live. With Minecraft, it seems to only be happening because Nintendo is allowing Xbox live sign in on Switch. PlayStation was never going to allow that, as I imagine Xbox wouldn’t allow PSN sign in on Xbox
