Sony Beats Microsoft At E3 Once Again By Doing What It Does Best

Every year at E3, it's that head to head match that grabs the most attention. Sony vs Microsoft, PlayStation vs Xbox. All the other companies can freely gun for attention on their own merits, but those two will always be locked in a mortal combat by virtue of two deeply similar platforms, with only one emerging victorious each year. This year, Microsoft walked in with a big advantage: it had Project Scorpio to show off, which we now know as the Xbox One X. But Sony, in its way, swaggered on stage and took the show again. This may not have been as strong a show as last year's, but Sony manages to keep winning by showing off its greatest strength in the face of Microsoft's greatest weakness.

The first 15 min of games were enough to set themselves up above MS'. No need for that annoying "Exclusive" announcement before each game...they spoke for themselves.

Heck, I'm just shocked at the sheer number of exclusives shown. And that's cause there's so many more in development that weren't shown today.

The expansion for Horizon's story became my most anticipated thing to play. I just beat Horizon and it was incredible, I jumped out of my seat hearing it was getting an expansion and I wouldn't have to wait for Horizon 2 before experiencing more of it's incredible world

I mean one of their most important games (and one of my most anticipated), Crackdown 3, is basically one of the most downgraded games ever.
Where is the destruction? This game looked in alpha stage... almost felt like an expansion of Crackdown 2.
All the other games, except Anthem (which EA did not show at their own conference...), are well known games and Forza 7 honestly did not look that impressive either. Sure good news for fans of the series, but nothing to drool on.

Yeah, they didn't drop any bomb, but for the love of any god, their catalog is unbelivably good and we got a LOT of gameplay from some of the best releases we'll have in the next months.
I'm pretty sure most of us still have the images of God Of war, Spiderman, Detroid impressed on their retinas... Do you have anything still impressed on your retinas from MS conference!?

Sony showed more exclusive games. Microsoft showed more hardware. No surprise there. Sony had more audio issues. They also wasted less time on talk. Microsoft showed a PC game as though it was Scorpio and that doesn't sit well with me. I'd say it wasn't a huge blowout in Sony's favour like the last few years but Sony does indeed get another win.

They are doing their best, but it's pretty clear MS gave up on this game and the power of cloud. (I still remember the comments here ... ).

I'm betting after the Microsoft conference, Sony dialed it back because they didn't need to come out firing this year. There is nothing that Microsoft did that make me take notice of anything in their conference. Will I get a One X? Yeah, next year, because there isn't anything top notch for the console this year.

Sony was great, yea can say the wow factor was missing but it was better than MS and like i said i was Impressed with the Little Beast called "X"

Nintendo won E3 followed by a solid show from Ubisoft then MS and Sony (its a draw) with EA in last.

Ill just say this. Sony did EXACTLY what they were suppised to do. If anyone remembers the ridiculous amount of games that launched the first 4 months of this year, prepare for a repeat in 18. They are sitting back with a Matai in hand, cause their formula is mastered. Sony is not even thinking about an awards show. Now take Microsoft, they Open with Forza 4, Assasins Creed, Metro, & Anthem, 3 AAA multiplat and a racing game. (Which looked damned good). They also showed a 499.99 console with ONE AAA exclusive, which dwindled into(YES,) impressive indies, but not 500 impressive. The True 4K talk was also insulting for the average consumer, mentioned every other 5 minutes. Then we have Nintendo, who kept there cards very concealed until play. Which in my opinion after looking at it, if you're grading E3 for shock and show. Nintendo came in swinging the hardest. No, did we really not appreciate the absence of either game footage or trailer to accompany the Metroid or Pokemon Switch announcement, but the Mario trailer was really good and showed exactly what the game had in store. The Rocket League reveal was actually incredible, cause this game screams competitive yet fun, and in palms of your hands. It's also great to know XC2 is on it's way, just like Ni No Kuni is on its way this year too.

Despite not having much new stuff to show, you can't deny that what Sony did show was pretty exciting. Something for almost everyone. VR lull sucked for the most part, but the rest was OK.

MS showed a ton of games, and while I am interested in a few of them, all but two of the games I'm interested in are multi-plat games, and they're not games that i can't wait on if they're timed.

MS conference wasn't bad, it just lacked mega-bombs, and MS in general completely failed to achieve what they needed to do, and that's justify Scorpio's existence by showing a good reason to get one. As it is, MS didn't really even show much to make the stock X1 look good.

Sony's games, in all their non-4K glory, just kicked MS showing into the ground and then kept kicking them into irrelevance.

When MS shows indie games which are more interesting, look better, and look to have better game play than CD3 which they've been hyping up for years now, you know MS has some issues which run deeper than just a lack of 1st party developers.

How long?

How the winner's decided and by who?

Sony's conference was pretty bad. Not much better then Microsofts'. A lot of stuff fans were expecting to see, was never shown. The audience barely clapped and seemed bored, especially during the VR games that were presented. Why Sony didn't show GT Sport, Everybody's Golf and Knack 2, which are all releasing this year, is beyond me. No Bloodborne 2 or The Last of Us 2. No updates on Shenmue 3, Kingdom Hearts 3 or FF VII remake. Not many New IP's. The fact they started the show with a Playstation Vue ad was disturbing. This was one of the worse Sony PS E3's I've seen in years. Their PS Experience has been better in some years.

Not a troll. I play everything. It wasn't just the crowd that you couldn't hear for the first 10 mins. You couldn't hear the games either. After they fixed that, I had no problems hearing the crowd or games. Not sure what you are talking about with the crowd being muted. There was audio problems when the conference started. After that, it was fine. Honestly, you didn't need sound to see most of the crowd not clapping or screaming. Only 2 games they got excited about was God of War & Spiderman. I tell it like it is. I don't need to mislead anything. Everyone said Nintendo & Ubisoft had better E3 shows then Sony & Microsoft. I'm about to watch Nintendo's now.

Here's the thing about your analysis of Sony's conference. At least 3 of these games on this list has people saying "OMG! I can't wait to play that game!", and the only way you'll be able to play any of those games is to buy a PS4.

No one is talking about the games Microsoft showed because none of them have that "OMG! I can't wait to play that," hype like Spider-man or God of War. Days Gone is going to be a sleeper hit just like Horizon Zero Dawn.

It's weird. Ps4 Sony showed amazing games, far better than what was shown at xbox conference but I still felt it was an overall weak e3 for them. I guess when you have stellar conferences like 2015 and 2016, it's gotta come down at some point. Either way, they beat MS after the first three showings but it got pretty boring in the middle until Spiderman was shown. Uncharted, Horizon, GOW, Spiderman, Days Gone and Detroit were all stellar. The difference is Microsoft had to have a better show than they did, Sony can get away with what they did this year because they still have more content of their own.

E3 for both Sony and MS wasn't on-par to be honest. I don't think anyone had a real killer game that would make one win E3 over the other. Sony showed more games and I was pleasantly surprised by the Shadow Of The Colossus remake announcement. Spiderman looked dope. Days Gone and GOW look great as well. MS showed hardware, so that balances the scale IMO

I think they purposely delayed demos/videos for Last of Us 2 and Death Stranding for next E3 which is why the line up looked a bit less but I think they did the good thing.

But, compared to 2016, this E3 was a bit of a downer. No Megaton moment.

I will be the first to admit that Sony's E3 conference wasn't close to as good as 2015 or 2016 - it could have in mind, but not in reality. The only reason Sony's conference could be considered a disappointment is that some people like myself was expecting Shenmue HD, and Sucker Punch's new IP and new FromSoftware game which are all most likely saved for PSX, and that the past 2 years spoiled us in unimaginable ways.

Sony already has a stacked 2017 and this conference was about release dates for this year and telling us what's confirmed for next year. MS has had an APPALLING year. Sony even has a better fall/holiday lineup than MS this year, with 2 of their supposed big hitters (Sea of Thieves and State of Decay 2) being delayed into 2018 - and even their actual first-party showings were abysmal outside of Cuphead and Ori 2.

MS honestly showed mostly content that PS4 is also getting on day one and also drip fed over time. You could call that a better show if you're wanting to try and take claim to multiplatform games and timed-exclusive indie games, but Sony showed plenty that is only coming to their platform that actually looks incredible.

The price made the Xbox One X irrelevant to a whole bunch of people who will not buy it at that price and was expecting $399, and mocking others for suggesting it would not be more - not irrelevant to those who were always counting on buying it no matter what. And when God of War and Spider-Man - both shown on a regular PS4 - look almost as good as anything shown on their high-end PC posing behind-the-scenes as an Xbox One X, you know there's not much left to say.

I look at it like this. If we didnt' know about the games being shown, how would we rate the conferences? IMO, Sony far outpaced MS on interesting games. MS had a few new games shown, some of which were cool, but overall, Sony just did so much better in actual content shown. It just didn't have those wow moments I think we were all expecting based on the past couple years. Sony's conference was a disappointment because they didn't show much new stuff. MS conference was a disappointment because most of what they showed wasn't all that compelling.

That's why I think Sony won, despite many still being disappointed in the overall conference itself. Sony did what they needed to do, show the games. MS failed to do what they needed to do, and that's justify a reason to want a Scorpio.

This is an opinion article so it's not right or wrong or factual. Again Sony showed games with no release dates and lots of cutscenes. A retread of 2016 with an expanded look at "Spider-Man: Quicktime Event". They were also too chicken to show GT Sport so it wouldn't be compared to Forza. MS, on the other hand, did an ok job with the X, lots of "timed" exclusives and some ok first party but check-swung on Crackdown and chickened out on showing us the future (which Sony always does a good job on). Price for the X is steep. Overall they both were just ok at the end of the day and no clear winner if you really keep an open mind. I think Ubisoft really beat them all since they have a Mario game and will have all of their other titles on all platforms - the best for them and their customers.

For all of Scorpio's power, I doubt anything that MS is working on will be anywhere close to the level of some of the games Sony has already released, or what they showed at E3. Some multi-plats will look better. Hardly a compelling reason to consider the X1X over a PS4P, or in some cases, even a stock PS4.

i wish people would stop with the whole backwards compatibility being a weakness thing.....its a minority that actually use it and if i wanted to play old games i would pull out the console that plays them....ive got a ps4 to play new games and my list of games to play at the moment is so long who has time to play games from 5 years ago anyway!!! feels like someone clutching at straws to bring ps4 down when its a moot point anyway!!!

E3 was lacking overall this year...Imo I think most companies kept it safe by showing off titles that are going to be released for the rest of this year & the first half of 2018 which is what Sony did.I think Sony will surprise folks with some unannounced titles at their PSX show including Gamescom & TGS. In my personal opinion Ubisoft won E3 for third year in a row. It showed what everybody else lacks:

The Ubisoft game developers explain their games in a natural manner and were excited about their work.

Well, yes I think Sony beat MS. But even as a PlayStation fanboy, I have to admit it was largely by default. I mean, they just had to show up to beat MS, and they did that. Yeah, they won with the quality of their exclusive AAA games, but Sony could have done more in terms of new titles. They still have TloU to show off, and Sucker Punch is still clouded in mist, my guess is that Sony feels strong enough to save those for later. I mean, there is not much competition from MS in terms of exclusives, so they can afford to wait. Maybe they don't want to annonce things to early either, as some people seem to complain about that even if it happens in all camps, not just Sony. I mean, Nintendo announced Metroid Prime 4 and Pokemon Switch without even showing a teaser of anything, and MS showed things that has been years in the making too. But yeah, not the best E3 overall. Still excited for a lot of games coming, but most we knew about.

I think that Sony avoided to show more games for 2 simple reasons.

1st : MS didnt show enough (didnt have?) anything to make Sony worried of how much they needed to have a better showing.
2nd : MS is launching Scorpio at the end of the year. Best way to counter Scorpio? save some amazing things for PS show at the end of the year, so when people go shopping in the holidays, instead of thinking "oh theres this new version of X-box" they will be thinking "i need a PS4 to get this games that where just shown".

3) Sony has 3 more conferences this year, first GamesCon in Germany, second the Tokyo game show (TGS) and third, the PSX event in december.
So they will spread the games they will show over those 3 events.

They may have put on the better E3 presentation, but they failed to show why XBX (Yeah, that's what I'm calling it now) is a good buy. They said it a lot, repeatedly, along with plenty of CG movies and some game play of 3rd party titles while using enhanced resolutions, but they didn't show anything.

My only complaint was that they didn't dedicate a chunk of time to Gran Turismo Sport in the conference. It's coming later this year and being a huge GT fan, it's my most anticipated game behind TLoU2.

tbh After Microsoft was done with their conference, i felt it was pretty underwhelming overall. Though, it did have some standout moments like Sea of Thieves gameplay, new Ori reveal, Anthem and Shadow of War gameplay, XBOX BC. And some of the other indie games would've been amazing otherwise, had they not put them in the context of Showcasing The Most Powerful Console Ever, that's just embarrassing and definitely doesn't highlight why would a potential customer be interested in buying the console. Probably for Minecraft in 4K, right.

I gave off a disappointed sigh, and figured that Sony would blow their competition out of the water if they just announced 1 new AAA IP or new exclusive. And then they didn't. It felt like the last PSX conference and this E3 conference should've switched places, because the hypest of announcements and new content appeared on PSX, while E3 seemed to be nothing more than a transitional show with mostly only the stuff about things we already were aware of. And it should've been otherwise, because no one expected as much from PSX, and because of that their E3 show took a hit. Imagine if they saved up TLOU 2 for the ending after Spiderman.

If i had to put the two in some simple manner of explanation, i'd say that Microsoft was like ++++ ----, and Sony - ++....--. Xbox shot itself in the foot right on the show, PS4 shot itself long before E3, it just didn't show bleeding until after the conference. It would pain me to have to pick the winner among 2 disabled, I'll just note that they both messed up and hope they get fixed for the next year.

The main reason sony still wins is because of the exclusives. Microsoft showed a ton of 3rd party games that you will be able to play on PS4. You can't play god of war, uncharted, spiderman, detroit and days gone anywhere else and these titles are looking spectacular. Ultimately this will be why the ps4 will continue to dominate. The games. Microsoft just don't have the quantity or quality of games on their system.

I think Sony was strong, as they didn't even need to show to be a success. This conference was kind of like "look where we are now". I am proud of a company that once ran third, learning from its past mistakes and moving forward full steam ahead. That said, Microsoft seem to be picking off their blinders and getting back some momentum - and hopefully that lasts. Nintendo is off being Nintendo, and as usual, that is just fine.

I'm not even going to read anything beyond the Title. I am a die hard Sony fanboy and the past 5 E3's Sony has won in my opinion. This year I drove about 2 hours to go to the E3 Experience that was in theaters as I have for the past 4 years. I can honestly say this was Sony's worse E3 by a seriously significant amount. The single reveal of God of War last year completely beats this year. The single reveal of The Last of Us Part 2 last year alone completely beats this year. I'm a freaking introvert and yet I made everybody in that theater know that this year was like a slap in the face. No Last of Us 2, No Death stranding, no hints to what sucker punch is up to, the list goes on. Hell if that KH3 trailer that dropped a few days ago was at Sony's E3 I would of went nuts and the conference still would of been lost.

Sony showed the better exclusives and gave more reasons to own a PS4/Pro than MS did for their S or X. But I was disappointed there wasn't a megaton announcement or more new stuff showed. I stayed up till 3am to see basically extended trailers for stuff I knew about from last year. Sure Horizon DLC is nice, and SotC is a Day 1, but tbh nothing Sony showed needed an E3 stage show - they could have just released the vids on YouTube and saved themselves the money renting the auditorium.

MS has a big problem. The power jump of the X is phenomenal, but as far as I can tell there's no X exclusives, so if MS are trying not to create a two tier platform then all X games will ever be are enhanced versions of S games - so what's the point. (At least with the PS4 Pro it enhances VR enough to justify the purchase). MS did show a lot of nice games, but I have no reason to upgrade to an X, and my S is gathering dust as I'll get most of the games on my PC. MS have almost made themselves irrelevant in the console industry.

I don't think I can call either MS or Sony the winner of E3 this year. Ubisoft showed how it should be done. They had a wide range of titles; and even if half end up being bullshots or never coming out, they at least put on a show! Seeing Ancel on stage tearing up over Beyond Good & Evil 2 showed the passion for gaming that a 1 hour sizzle reel or endlessly repeating 'Exclusive' couldn't.

Sony and Nintendo take the prize this year.. Im far more excited by the exclusives they showed.. Microsoft had some cool moments like Ori & cuphead for example but Crackdown cannot compete with the others to me.. Thats not to say Sony and Nintendo did perfectly but they might be saving some heavy hitters for TGS or something.. I must add, Detroit become human looks better than i thought it would. GoW, Spiderman, & monster hunter look great too.. Some of these games might not live up to the hype but given their track record, they will be fine.. Mario, Kirby, and metroid etc for Nintendo is all i wanted to hear and they delivered. Two metroid games at that.. Im disappointed about the lack of new features for the systems however i buy consoles for games anyway.. Also they didnt show any gameplay of TLoU.. That was a let down but still, Sony easily beat Microsoft despite them having a new beast of a console.. Nintendo did too imo
