Are consoles soon to be a thing of the past? According to PlayFirst co-founder and CEO John Welch, the answer to that question is yes.
The Xbox 360 is no longer needed.Real functioning grills are the better choice
Who is this guy and why should I care about what he has to say?
no real need for articals like this
wow i really read that from start to end .. that did gave some good points but in the end was pointless .. they are alway going to be around is like online movies the dvds (blue ray) are never gona end .. its just dumb to think so .. so if u see these befor u read all that dont do it is not worth it lol.... dumb read.....!
"I think the biggest proof point in the death of consoles in my thesis is the Wii. The most successful, most difficult to acquire console in this generation is at least a generation old in hardware." If I facepalm right now, I'll knock my own head off because this is just retarded. The most successful console being a generation old in hardware would be an even bigger reason why there's "no real need" for PCs either. They're not difficult to acquire but people new to PC games are going to have a difficult learning curve and the hardware costs more than consoles. "The advances are in software and peripherals. Why do you need a box for that? If the real expansion is occurring because of what Nintendo has done, why do we even need a console?" He just...has no idea what he's talking about. What is he even defending? I hope not PC gaming because you can throw PC gaming in the console category as well as far as not needing something because of hardware technology. No average joe is gonna go out and get video card that costs as much as a console just to play a game that can only run on minimum requirements. I can rant on forever but I'm even gonna waste my time...
PC's aren't going anywhere, and neither are consoles. This crap grows old quick.
@Marceles yep thats what i mean ... people that dont know what they are alking about are better of not doing it ... i mean i dont mean i know all i talk about but im a gamer and i know my backgrounds about games .. so at times i get stupid with the things i read around here and on the net in general from people that come up with the most stupid things around .. but like i said befor he has some good points but for most is just stupid on his ideas .. or points ..
Consoles are needed, cause consoles are accessible Douch horn. PC's, believe it or not, are still intimidating to familes/parents. Consoles, on the other hand, are more user friendly/plug n' play affairs. Consoles are for very casual orientated experiences from your living room. So this entire article and write up fails beyond belief. I hate how everyone becomes a journalist or analyst when it comes to games. 95% of them don't even know what they're talking about. For that reason alone I miss Games Blow. Atleast his site was informative and well thought out.
Righhtttt..... 120 million PS2s, 15 million PS3s, 20 million 360s, 30 million Wii's beg to differ. People love consoles.
I am not going to pay a thousand bucks to upgrade my PC so I can play the newest generation of games. My money goes to the consoles because it is pop the CD in and play; not upgrade, install, then play...
Wow, people still believe that constant upgrade myth, huh?
I still want a damned console in my livingroom
no wonder these CEO making bad business decision which is about to cost us 700 billion tax payers money.
let us have our consoles.....we need this console war instead of a real war
Considering he sells games everywhere but in consoles, I think we may consider his opinion biased.
...opinions are like anuses. Everyone's got one... most of them stink. The point that this guy misses is that the Wii was so successful because it is in a class of its own. As consoles became more powerful and more powerful (and more expensive and more delicate)... the hard core gamers (minus the ones who dared not ditch their expensive gaming PC) gravitated towards the next machine while parents of 7-year-olds scratched their heads trying to figure out how to keep their children occupied. The Wii filled a gap that the PS3 and the XBox 360 left behind a long time ago. You can't really compare the three consoles. It would be like calling a TiVo a set top box and the XBox 360 a set top box, and then declaring the TiVo a winner. It makes no sense. There are more sales of cotton swabs than Wiis, but it also makes no sense to declare cotton swabs the winner in the console wars either. The reality is, for what it's worth, is that more and more powerful PCs are becoming a thing of the past. Cloud computing is putting the processing power and storage space in "the cloud" and all that is required is a somewhat responsive PC. This will eventually leave a gap... a requirement for something very powerful in order to accomplish something that cannot live only in the cloud... gaming. So, PCs will become less and less powerful, to fill the need for cloud computing. Consoles will still get more powerful and more versatile, to fill the need for impressive graphics, powerful game play, etc... As for casual gaming, this is also something that can either be filled by the cheap PCs or by the expensive consoles, or by an additional entry in the market such as the Wii. Just making a blanket statement like "game consoles are obsolete" is like saying that expensive cars are on their way out because economy cars are the wave of the future. This assumes that the masses will all settle for exactly the same thing. This rarely happens. People have different tastes. As long as there will still be tastes for Mercedes, Ferraris, Cameros, Hondas, Kias.. trucks, cars, motorcycles, SUVs... etc, etc, etc... there will always be a place for high powered expensive consoles... low powered cheap consoles... high powered expensive cell phones... low powered cheap cell phones... low powered cloud computing PCs... high powered gaming PCs... etc, etc, etc...
Damn PC fanboys...yet another wank claiming consoles are dead - because a CEO said so. Go back to your overclocked piece of Micro$hat, fool.
. .. .... .. .. .
There will ALWAYS be consoles...end of.. Consoles = EVERY game that is released for your specific console you can play (except maybe X360 cores when a hdd IS req'd) PC's = New game comes out and you have to upgrade to play it. New gfx card, more memory, faster cpu etc etc. Myself like many others are sick of upgrading to play a new game on PC thats only 3 months old. Thats why there will ALWAYS be consoles.
why do companies which make low budget PC games think consoles are not needed, see wildtangent article. I got a console (both 360 and PS3) so i could play online with out all the numpties with aimbots! I persoanally game in 2 different rooms, basically upstairs have a 27" LCD and Downstairs have a 42" much easier to move a console than a pc. Tried putting a PC 'in the living room' before as a media centre and it just does not work
