Microsoft's Exclusivity Problem Is On Full Display At E3, Even As Xbox One X Impresses

Forbes: "Microsoft finally unwrapped Project Scorpio today, revealing the console as the “Xbox One X,” which is a bit of a mouthful, but I suppose there could have been worse names."

PhoenixUp2935d ago (Edited 2935d ago )

Microsoft still showed some worthwhile exclusives at this conference

Although it's very significant that they still haven't released a new flagship IP this gen that could stand alongside Halo, Forza, & Gears of War

SpaceRanger2935d ago

Which ones? Aside from what was already known?

"Playstation domination across all nations" Is the average IQ of a Sony user lower than the number on the console? I mean, wow, its just sooooo many PS4 players sound plain stupid.

DARK_WOLF2935d ago

Yeah im so sick of seeing sea of thieves and crackdown.

I want new games ffs.

Xbox one x is great and as a platform for gaming xbox is the best imo but there is no denying the lack of exclusive games.

Sony is laying the smackdown this gen with quality exclusives.

Xbox is not, but atleast its got third party games to play.

Playstation is a must for its exclusives. Play everything else on xbox 👍

GrubsterBeater2935d ago (Edited 2935d ago )

@LastCenturyRob

"I mean, wow, its just sooooo many PS4 players sound plain stupid."

Oh, the irony of this statement....

How about you learn proper grammar and proper spelling before calling other people stupid..

Also, on this subject, usually the "stupid people" with the "low IQs" are the XBox fans, who typically still haven't hit puberty or use "I f%#$&@ your Mom" insults. The most telling evidence of XBox fans being the ones lacking any modicum of intellect is that they CHOOSE TO EVEN BUY an XBox. An intelligent person would realize what a stupid decision it is to waste their money on a paper weight studded with electronics.

This MS E3 show was awful. They had so little to show that they used games that were multiplat or timed exclusives for the most part... Sad, really... I feel sorry for anyone with an XBox...

4Sh0w2935d ago (Edited 2935d ago )

Yep, I'm a huge Xbox fan but today I got to agree with alot ps fans, well sort of. I thought it was good as far as quantity but quality= 1st party AAA games was pitiful. Sure I'll play Sea of Thieves, Date of Decay2, a few of those indies but its completely inexcusable to not show off gameplay of Crackdown 3 at E3 after all this time and hype. Games com...pfft, wtf? It's also inexcusable not to drop at least 1 Anthem caliber console exclusive. I mean I saw some fun looking stuff like that last man standing multi game(cant remember the name), etc but where was the big new IP??? I'm not blindly loyal, I understand things take time but seriously it's TIME to deliver what I and millions of core Xbox fans bought an X1 for.

I mean damm I still think Ryse is better than most of what they showed (I really like that game though). I'm not trying to be negative and I went in with reasonable expectations, no way is asking for a big new AAA IP in the vein of what made Xbox, Xbox asking too much. Xbox One X hardware is great imo but other than Anthem(a multipat game) Microsoft themselves didn't give us a whole lot of incentive to buy it so Im not gonna sit here and pretend everything is OK, I hope they get slammed, thats how you improve, I expect more!

rainslacker2935d ago

Spencer said that he pays attention to what people say on social media about MS, I believe in reference to OGXbox BC.

but what this conference showed me is that while Phil may pay attention, he fails to comprehend what people are actually saying, or MS itself doesn't really care about addressing it.

MS had a good showing of games. But the criticism that people have had about Xbox is that it doesn't have enough games. That was about games that MS itself publishes or produces. MS in this conference was trying to meet the criticism of "no games", while showing almost nothing that they are producing or publishing.

This conference, IMO, failed miserably to actually do what MS needed to do. They need to quell the criticism of "no games", and give a reason to want a Scorpio. No games didn't address the underlaying criticism of MS produced/published games. They misdirected by throwing up "exclusive" for all these timed exclusives that MS didn't produce or publish. They failed to sell the Scorpio because after touting up 4K before every game, they then show things that look like last gen games.....or worse. Some interesting concepts in there sure, but is that what gets people excited for a new most powerful console. The variety of games was there, but that variety is going to be on other consoles, and won't require a $500 expenditure. May not get "the best experience", but I'm sure people can live with the $250 or $400 version experience that they likely already have. I'm perfectly content with getting the few true console exclusives that interest me on my stock X1. The rest they showed I'll get on my more than capable PS4P which I already own. Most looked like they'd play fine on my modestly equipped PC that's 5 years old now.

They showed a bunch of timed exclusive indie games. The conference was pretty weak overall.

Deep-throat2935d ago (Edited 2935d ago )

Sony does that every year. They show a lot of indie games. Everyone fill their shows with indies and remasters.

BiggerBoss2935d ago

@deepthroat

Except Sony ALSO shows big exclusive games like God of War and Horizon

MagicBeanz2935d ago

The defenitly needed to show a reason for people to spend $500 on xbone x, and they defenitly failed to do just that.

Overload2935d ago (Edited 2935d ago )

@Deep Throat

Sony does this on the PS Blog and their YouTube channel.

Wallstreet372935d ago (Edited 2935d ago )

Difference between showing indies you are relying on and hardly anything else Worth mentioning besides Ori lol and showing indies but still relying on awesome AAA exclusives like Sony does. The butt hurt and defense force responses from Some ppl are insane. God of War alone smashes anything Microsoft has shown out the park, heck Horizon that already came out does that and it's playable right now and isn't an indie. It's like whatever power difference Scorpio has over PS4 pro doesn't matter when you still see PS4 exclusives looking and playing better than anything on Scorpio. The third party games like metro looked better than stuff like crackdown, that's sad. Crackdown also got the biggest downgrade I've ever seen smfh.

But sure let's keep defending :)

Shadyceaser2935d ago

UCForce2935d ago (Edited 2935d ago )

Christopher2935d ago

Okay, even I'm asking you to show this one.

The big "exclusives" were Forza 7, Sea of Thieves, and Crackdown 3. We know Forza 7 and it's been highlighted as the sign of what type of 4k we'll have. Then there's Sea of Thieves, which really showed nothing new and Crackdown 3, which still hasn't shown any live SP campaign or any new MP for... two years now?

Otherwise, those big titles were all third-party titles that had no exclusive mentions of content or time at all. The rest were nice, but they were PC games also coming to XBO.

They failed to deliver a single 'big' new exclusive IP and that is an issue when they are claiming to work to turn that around and after this year of issues.

Overload2935d ago (Edited 2935d ago )

Agreed. I even think Crackdown, SOT and SOD had pretty weak showings, I expected more from SOD.

darthv722935d ago

I did not watch the whole thing but i only found out about og xb from here. As great as that is... it really is a smh display (or lack of) in regards to true new games for xbox fans.

I was hoping for even new entries from og xb games like bloodwake, quantum redshift, brute force... games that people have been asking for for years now.

Huge missed opportunity but im keen on og xb games (hope with live support) and the $500 price is not out of reasonable range.

Why o why2935d ago Show
Christopher2935d ago (Edited 2935d ago )

@darthv72: OG Xbox games was my favorite moment of the whole event.

@below: It definitely couldn't hurt. Would love to see a new Tenchu and Jade Empire, personally.

darthv722935d ago (Edited 2935d ago )

Maybe (and this is a big maybe) the reception of og xb bc could lead to new games (like i mentioned) based on og ip..?

Then again, if the positive reception of 360 bc has not lead to new games based on 360 ip then im doubtful it would be different for og.

The 10th Rider2935d ago (Edited 2935d ago )

They really did fail to show a single 'big' exclusive new IP, which is an issue.

But on the flipside almost every big exclusive game they showed, Forza 7, Sea of Theives, Crackdown 3, and State of Decay 2, are all supposedly releasing before next E3 (Cuphead too, not sure if that's console exclusive, though?). The only one that we don't know about is Ori and the Will of the Wisps.

While I do think it's a huge issue that they didn't show anything new in terms of exclusives other than Ori, it is a step in the right direction in terms of showing more games in general, and avoiding showing games years in advance only to have them sit in development for years and years.

EDIT: I'm with Overload that Crackdown, SOT, and SOD 2 had pretty weak showings. State of Decay they barely showed us anything. Sea of Thieves looked exactly like everything we've already seen. Crackdown looked worse than gameplay footage we've already seen. Anthem and Metro had jaw-dropping showings, but are multiplatform and not even timed exclusives. Ori looked absolutely gorgeous.

starchild2935d ago

@Christopher

"Would love to see a new Tenchu and Jade Empire, personally."

Good taste. Getting new games in those franchises would be a dream come true for me.

JasonKCK2935d ago

So, we get to ignore cosole exclusives now? They seemed so important before. Also, there were no VR filler games.

Christopher2935d ago

***So, we get to ignore cosole exclusives now? They seemed so important before.***

So, we get to ignore first party exclusives now? They seemed so important before.

*** Also, there were no VR filler games.***

Major Nelson said they haven't finalized their VR plans yet. So, still working on it, but it'll likely come. Don't you worry!

JasonKCK2935d ago (Edited 2935d ago )

It's just odd how 3rd party console exclusives are praised elsewhere, but dismissed here. Are you going to deny that doesn't happen?

First party exclusives were there even if we already knew about them.

Christopher2935d ago (Edited 2935d ago )

***It's just odd how 3rd party console exclusives are praised elsewhere, but dismissed here. Are you going to deny that? ***

Third party exclusives, I think, would have been praised if they weren't the usual Indie games (though, they do look good, they just don't have the selling power). I think the issue is they had nothing "strong" that was exclusive that we didn't already know or doesn't truly sell the power of XBO X or the goal of focusing on, as Phil has said, increasing the power of their exclusive line up.

I would have praised them for at least getting some exclusive content that we haven't heard of, but we didn't even hear that.

But, at least the third parties will be supporting the new console and its power.

JasonKCK2935d ago

A few were indies, Battlegrounds looks great, and I agree with OG Xbox BC being a big surprise.

I guess they could have announced some far off projects.

But they did lack any big AAA game announcements.

MegamanXXX2935d ago

@Starchild

I expected big AAA games announcements like like a new Mechassault or Fable

Tussin1872935d ago

@Starchild

Was the Last Night console or launch exclusive. Can't remember sense they were switching back and forth. That game looked pretty sweet. I would be bummed if it was console exclusive.

trooper_2935d ago

Like....?

BC, again is just a luxury. The games they showed are either timed or multiplat.

_-EDMIX-_2935d ago

I don't know what you're talking about

What exclusives? They basically just showed off a series of multi-platform games even the games that they were making can be found on other platforms ie PC.

darthv722935d ago

The whole PC argument applies to those who tend to game on PC.

I dont so it does not apply to me. If it is on xbox and not ps or switch... it is exclusive in my book.

Same can be said about ps games not on xb or switch but also on PC. They are still exclusive to me.

strifeblade2935d ago

No this was the most underwhelming conference from msoft ever. Im a huge fan, i own a high end 4k hdr tv as well so scorpio looks great for third party and multiplats no doubt. backwards compatibility is not bad, kinda meh. big exclusives were crackdown, forza, sea of thieves, and ori, state of decay 2, lucky tails fox. Crackdown looks alright- good co op- been a while they been showing that- hype is down for me. Forza is probably going to be the best racer as Sony still doesn't have an answer even if they release gt- dont think it will compete. ori will be amazing. sea of thieves is really meh. state of decay 2 is alright, fun co op. Besides forza none of these exclusives are stellar powerhouse games- no new ip. DISSAPOINTING GAMES WISE. I think sony will steal the show, that new spiderman game god of war and last of us sequel, probably gran turismo, who knows what else. This smokes the xbox line up- microsoft has no answer to those games save for GT.

Biggest positive is the console itself and will out compete sony multiplat wise but exclusives wise, sony has it this year and i dont have to watch their e3 to know that. THE 500$ price is expected, and i think msoft just gave sony a chance to destroy them this year games wise.

Takwin2935d ago

There are no exclusives. So they showed zero of them. Not sure what you mean.

FinalFantasyFanatic2935d ago

I'm actually impressed they had so many games to show off, I really want Anthem. I expected nothing more than a reveal of the new xbox, was somewhat surprised.

I couldn't agree more with this article.

Anyone get annoyed by the whole "Exclusive" audio feature for just about every game that is multi platform?

And what was up with not showing total level destruction with Crackdown? They spend almost 15min with Sea of Thieves (almost fell asleep) and chose to only show a trailer for Crackdown.

KingKionic 2935d ago

The crackdown footage shown was from the campaign.

"For those asking.... Destruction is still part of Crackdown 3 Multiplayer. Today you saw campaign, for the 1st time ever. More on MP soon!!"

https://mobile.twitter.com/...

SpaceRanger2935d ago

Ahh, thanks for the clarification!

So I'm guessing it's not as much a part of single player campaign??

AspiringProGenji2935d ago

I would hope so. The showing was pretry stale. I'm not sure why the destructions wouldn't carry over to the single player, but let's believe him for now

KingKionic 2935d ago

Crackdown destruction has always been for multiplayer Just so everyone knows.

The multiplayer will be PvP in a city fully destructible.

But it's unusual that it wasn't the first thing shown.

Overload2935d ago

Something is obviously different or they would have shown it.

Nodoze2935d ago (Edited 2935d ago )

HAHA so there is no destruction in the single player game. WOW.

Also when they trotted out Dragon Ball Z as a major exclusive.....OUCH.

morganfell2935d ago

Has anyone considered the Crackdown MP will not launch along side the SP this fall?

Christopher2935d ago (Edited 2935d ago )

They should have had an on-stage live demo of Crackdown SP. Anything in a trailer like that isn't what I look for to sell me on a game. I know nothing of the story, nothing of the character(s), and all I know is that Terry Crews is still an extremely likable and marketable person who I hope doesn't age or die.

***Has anyone considered the Crackdown MP will not launch along side the SP this fall?***

During the YouTube stream interview, they said SP, Co-Op, and MP would all release on November 7. They'll highlight MP later on specifically and they called it 'competitive MP'.

morganfell2935d ago (Edited 2935d ago )

Christopher,

Then that being the case it makes no sense why they did not show it. It is well inside the beta window which means something isn't working right. If it isn't ready in a playable form of some sort with 5 months before the game goes to reproduction and only 4 months and change before it goes to QA for gold cert there is definitely something wrong.

dumahim2935d ago

Which is kind of scary since Crackdown actually comes out this year and SOT is next year.

4Sh0w2935d ago (Edited 2935d ago )

Yeah I follow Crackdown 3 news like a bloodhound so I already knew the destruction was multi only(online using Azure), that was exactly what I have been waiting to see= a proper multi gameplay demo with full on destruction. Why in the hell would they wait..errr not ready, OK but how f-ing long does it take, nah I'm not buying they cant muster a 5min gameplay showcase of one area at GD E3!

I don't know but I agree the crackdown footage showing campaign first unusual.

Maybe because we never saw it before but caused confusion.

Good thing it's still in there.

Nodoze2935d ago

Crackdown looked AWFUL. For the amount of time it has been in development it should super polished, and it isn't. The explosions, the textures, the animations, and the absolute lack of destruction on display. Meh. A 6.5 tops based on what was shown.

SoT looked....it looked like it was still a concept. Forza looked good, but it always does.

Anthem absolutely stole the show and it was not even exclusive.

KingKionic 2935d ago

It wasnt a exclusive but that fidelity was off of xbox one x so thats a positive. It was definitely using tons of advance effects and 4k assets for sure.

meatnormous2935d ago

I think they did the "Exclusive" audio because some maybe negative fanboys kept complaining about the XBox not having any exclusives and they wanted to show that they do. Most of the exclusives were console exclusive, which means the games won't be on the Switch or PS4. Still Phil said there would be PC exclusives and XB1S/XB1X exclusives. I didn't see any PC exclusives at all. Maybe they will show some at GamesCom or XBox Experience.

Dark_Knightmare22935d ago

Yeah let's throw the elephant from the conference out there.

It was definitely geared around showing third party support and why Xbox one x is a beast on the third party titles.

The backwards compatibility Xbox one x stuff was great and not even expected

Almost every game shown was native 4K at the show when they were announced with the logo in the bottom.

freshslicepizza2935d ago

They delivered on the hardware but not on software.

morganfell2935d ago

They actually delivered on the hardware with the One S. If they had pumped all the Scorpio money into games for the X1 look where they would have been.

Why o why2935d ago

Infinite cash cheat means they should be able to do both.

modelgod2935d ago

Was I the only one who thought for a split second that Black Desert was actually Lost Odyssey 2? I was about to explode! !

CaptainObvious8782935d ago (Edited 2935d ago )

Wow....

If moldy, MOLDY can say MS didn't deliver on the software at the E3 conference, well... that's really saying something. How many other die hard ms fans around the world are saying the same thing? MS could be in real trouble, even more than they are now.

This is the second time in history I've agreed with Moldy. I'll be on the look out for asteroids today.

4Sh0w2935d ago (Edited 2935d ago )

Why o Why thats exacty what I was gonna say= they can afford to do both.

I've been to Redmond Washington, seen Microsoft Campus and Xbox firsthand, lots of folks employed there, I've studied the company, they are rolling in cash Xbox is small potatoes to some of the investments they have made that never saw the light of day.
PLUS the Xbox engineers who design hardware are obviously sesperate from game designers and developers. Microsoft easily has the deep pockets to fund whatever they want, simply put right now they are just misguided. I genuinely think Phil is just trying to please too many masters.

morganfell2935d ago (Edited 2935d ago )

They cannot afford to do both. People act like MS can just throw money where they want. Why not buy total Battlefield and COD exclusivity? Because they have a budget, that's why.

Being able to graph out on a bar napkin how it is technically possible is not the same as being able to do it.

conanlifts2935d ago (Edited 2935d ago )

I have to agree. In addition i thought the conference as a whole was awful for current xbox owners. Literally nothing releasing from ms until September. No new 1st party games, no new 1st party exclusives and sea of thieves delayed to 2018. Plus most exclusives had the term " xbox console launch exclusive". So this term implies they could potentially all be timed exclusives anyway. Personally i hope ms gets plenty of disappointed fans expressing themselves. They need to get the message that to succeed they need 1st party games. They are not even falling back on halo or gears.

Relientk772935d ago

I thought they showed off some great games, but almost all of them are multiplatform

Elit3Nick2935d ago

There certainly was some good showings for Forza, AC:O and Anthem, but why no extended gameplay for SoD2 and Crackdown 3? This was honestly a 6/10 conference for me, and one of MS's weakest since before the XB1 reveal.

modelgod2935d ago

The best showing was Anthem and it's not even exclusive. Very weak conference!

CaptainObvious8782935d ago

I'm hearing a few people saying it was one of their worst (discounting the 2013 DRM nightmare of course). This is really troubling for MS as the position they're in now and the large amount of online chatter about their very weak games lineup, they needed one of their best showings ever and it seems they greatly under delivered.

Takwin2935d ago

correction: **ALL** of them are multiplatform

AspiringProGenji2935d ago (Edited 2935d ago )

That's true. And now they are using some confusing "console Launch exclusive" tag to make them sound like exclusives when they are timed. Very lose use of the word exclusive lol

Lots of indie games and not new 1st party ips... And some games we already knew with two of them being 2018 releases. Well at least these ones were alright. Sea of Thieves looks very good

EatCrow2935d ago

Console launch. I think is actually related to already being on pc. Don't know about the timed thing. But yea it could be.

Tussin1872935d ago

But they said launch exclusive and not console. They had Xbox and windows exclusive and launch exclusive. They threw everything together and that's why people are confused. It did it's job I guess but now people are going to point out how they tried to bit a little slick with the term exclusive.
