So Microsoft just lifted the lid on Xbox One X, the latest addition to the Xbox family. It’s the high-end device console gamers need – at least Microsoft’s marketing screams. But watching the conference, and seeing reaction from those around me, I’m left with one huge question; what’s the point of it?

Of course if you’re looking to invest in a full 4K setup, $500 is a drop in the ocean. But Xbox One X really doesn’t feel like a day one purchase for the many. Robbed of true exclusives, the argument for existing Xbox One owners to rush out and upgrade is already mute – they can access the same catalog of titles. The sweeteners like 4K Blu-Ray are nice additions for sure, but those don’t sell the consoles gaming capabilities. If Microsoft’s aim here was to sell the Xbox One X as a must-buy, it really struggled.

My PC does more too but that's not what I was referring to. Perhaps Sony will address concerns for 1080p owners who are getting shafted by not including supersampling on many games. It is very clear the engineers at Microsoft went far beyond what Sony did and I am not just talking about horepower.

@moldybread I can guarantee that MS will struggle with offering advantages for 1080p games. They are having trouble making games. This is what perplexes me about the X1X. Why not wait and make it next gen, and then offer compatibility etc. alongside new, amazing games.

When the NEO was leaked, everyone got pissed that Sony was gonna split the base. They have done very well to keep the two consoles close together. It is a great replacement, perfect for 4k owners, now that they are cheap to buy, and perfect for PSVR. It made sense.

The X1X is almost being marketed as this next gen beast, when at first it was supposed to be an upgrade option for those who have bought 4k TVs etc. I'm just confused.

The point is that there is no must have AAA exclusives coming to the console! During the consoles they showed a lot of exclusives but nothing mind blowing. The PS4 pro on the other hand has a ton of AAA first party exclusive coming! Wait till tomorrow and we'll see a lot more.

Well perhaps we should wait and see how many games actually get super sampling patches before we make claims about that eh? After all I seem to remember a lot of people claiming Xbox games wouldn't even need patches at all to benefit on Scorpio now it seems like they will and that there are only 30 games scheduled to get an update to begin with.

At some point i will graduate to a Pro and XBOX but for now im content with the base PS4 and XBO.

I like that they are trying to win people back by showing all these games but they had a real missed opportunity. Announcing some new games based on old dormant og xb games would have been great to coincide with og xb bc support.

New entries for brute force or mech assault or crimson skies to tie into those og ones... guess that just wasnt on their mind.

Maybe next time.... maybe.

Well, if you think about it, the MS show was amazing... it showed PS4 gamers a bunch of multiplat games that we got to see trailers for so that Sony has more time to show all the exclusive games we get to play on our PS4's. MS knocked a bunch of multuplat trailers out of the way for us.

They showed a ton of multiplat games that we get to play on PS4, which knocks those trailers out of the way so that Sony has more time in their conference to show exclusives that we get to play only on the PS4... so if you think about it, the show was only really good for Sony fans because we get most of the games from MS's show, plus everything they show at Sony's conference tomorrow.

Who are these 1080 owners who have concerns? I have only seen those who state they are all into 4K and typically Xbox fan boys say that it's a concern. In fact, you are the only person who I have seen have a concern over it.

What is there to address? Publishers can offer whatever enhancements they want for their games. If you have a concern, take it up with your PC, because you don't own an X1 or a PS4 apparently.

MS knows their fucked as far as first party studio support so in order to take our minds off of the fact that there's no new IP's, they just release a strong consOle with tons of indie games, and says " this is the go to console for 3rd party games." In other words: " You can have your exclusives Nintendo and Sony and we....." Nooooooooooo......we want our exclusives as well!!! Yeah, good job MS. They are sooo lucky I'm into achievements, otherwise I would have abandoned ship last year and brought like 60 of my friends to the dark side, or light side, however you perceive Sony.

Wow I am surprised how many PS4 guy were not impressed. I see at least 40 games running at 4K and more to be patched. E3 is now getting started by the way. You will hear a lot more about X1X this week and beyond. Lots of developers will loosen those lips after the reveal. That game for Bioware is already the most beautiful game I have ever seen.

And it's not just PS4 fans that are disappointed... The general consensus across the board is that is was underwhelming.

Yeah, well, I expected to hear a lot about MS support of the console at E3. I was told to wait for E3 when I sad how poorly MS was doing on delivering content for Xbox. I waited, and I didn't see my concerns addressed. If anything, it's actually much worse than I thought, because I just thought they were holding stuff back for Scorpio, when there was nothing there in the first place.

Almost every game they showed was multi-plat, so since I can't see any reason to spend $500 on Scorpio, and I have a PS4P to play the best experience with what I have already, most of what I saw from this conference were games to get on my PS4P, with only 2 games which I'll get for my Xbox. One of which I already knew was coming.

What more are the developers going to say? They're releasing a game on Scorpio? Countless articles about the resolution of every game on various systems like we see now with X1/PS4 articles? Hooray I guess.

MS had two things to achieve at this conference.
1. Show off the power of the Scorpio.
2. Show a reason why one should care about the Xbox brand and buy one in any incarnation.

They failed at the first because for all their 4K talk, they kept showing games which didn't show off that power.

They kind of failed at the second, because they didn't show much that was actually exclusive to the system to remain invested in the brand, and insted just relied on the power to make people interested.

No they wouldn't, Shadow of war is confirmed not native. Most of the older games will make the resolution bump, but Big high textured games like Shadow of war; GT and Horizon Zero dawn; can not run 4K on pro without a major graphics downgrade.
You said the games shown at the X1X even can easily run 4K on the pro. You talk about 1 of the games there and you are clearly wrong on that one.

As a gaming PC, ps4, nintendo switch owner, The xbox one x makes no sense to me, consoles are supposed to be affordable.

And having most of those "EXCLUSIVE!??" games available on windows 10 makes it more pointless to buy the xbox one x, For $500 I'll just upgrade my pc so I can enjoy "WINDOWS 10 games and many many many pc exclusive games @ 4k".

Mass Effect Andromeda was done by a second Bioware team who didn't have experience making Games except DLC plus many of the original developer s left years ago so which as you can see that the leak ME: Andromeda alpha build look better than current. Also Bioware Montreal had many controversy stuff happening behind the scenes like hiring a cosplayer with no experience as the lead character model or something related and the studio is a support studio again by help making DLC or other stuff but can't no longer make Games after sending Mass Effect hietus. The main and original Bioware team who did Mass Effect trilogy is doing Anthem so I feel optimistic about this.

At the end of the day software drives the purchase of hardware and if they're just going to continue to have a very very absolutely terrible first-party you're still going to see the same reaction from gamers.

For god sakes I'd rather play Horizon zero Dawn using a PlayStation 4 Pro even with checkerboard 4K then not play any great games using an Xbox One X.

So even if I'm playing in upscaled 4k or a 4K rendered using a different method trust me I'd rather actually play God of War The Last of Us Horizon in a whole field of exclusives using that method then basically having zero exclusives at all.

So sure PlayStation 4 Pro clearly isn't as good as Xbox One X in terms of technical performance but PlayStation 4 clearly has the better games which actually makes the performance from the Xbox one X completely irrelevant.

I game in my living room by the way. On my PS4 or X1s, and I stream my PC games in 4K HDR to my 4K TV using Nvidia Shield TV.

I see both of your points. I love my online experience on my xbox, and although I do have the money and I love games, my attitude towards Niho, Nier, Persona, and Horizon is " I'll get to them eventually." Trust me, I feel like second place, but I've had an Xbox since the original and don't feel like uprooting my online experience. Nintendo also has exclusives that cannot be played on PS so I hear both sides. I'm really disappointed at what I've seen today. The only glimmer of hope I had is when I saw black desert and thought it was an exclusive.

The destructive cities from crackdown haven't been dropped, they are exclusive to the multiplayer mode, something we've known for a while now. What was shown today wasn't from that mode.

Yeah, why show that when it's been the one and only selling point for the game since before the release of the X1? No reason to do it on the E3 stage where everyone was watching. Much better to release a trailer later in the week so people can misunderstand what they saw and wonder wtf MS was doing, and if they really screwed up the cloud power, because obviously, everyone was aware this was the SP campaign shown. No confusion whatsoever. Obviously showing a generic looking game with no cloud destruction was the way to go. MS made no mention of this during the conference. Was about an hour after the conference where the news came out that it was the SP campaign.

Great show huh? Easy to say now that it was the SP campaign, but MS really screwed up the game play reveal of this game, and given how long they've been hyping up the cloud destruction, you'd think they'd make some big deal about it at the actual conference to shut people up.

The best place to play is always going to be determined by the software and by default they're always going to have better software in terms of their Japanese connections and in terms of their first party Studios especially if Microsoft continues to cancel games and close down Studios.

Having a couple extra teraflops doesn't somehow make up for not having games.

I'm a PC gamer and I'm happy Microsoft started their play anywhere plan. I honestly don't think it has as big of an effect on the console market as you think.

The problem is not that Microsoft puts their exclusives on Xbox One and PC, the problem is that they don't make enough AAA exclusives period. If they made plenty of AAA exclusives and put them on Xbox One and PC you would still see the Xbox One start to do much much better in the console market.

Scorpio was a way better name. A nice scorpion in green or silver on top of that big black box. Complete with scorpion emblems on the controller would have made it feel more exclusive. Whoever told them to go with generic Xbox X made a mistake. I think they definitely missed a opportunity there. Now it's nothing more than another version of Pro premium upgrade. The presentation was off too. The games themselves were awesome but lacked a narrative on what made them only possible on Scorpio.

I don't see any reason to purchase one & I'm speaking for myself.Their showing of games were lackluster except for Anthem & Metro & those titles are multi-plat.Most games they showcased were saying enhanced which is not true 4k,there were a couple of their first party titles & some indies that did say native 4k nor did they mention titles would be in native 4k & 60fps. I will say this again only the hardcore XBO fanatics will buy this,it won't move any mountains.

Honestly, $499 is a perfectly fine price, as well. I will buy one, and then I'll have the best crossplat gaming, plain and simple. Nothing wrong with that. If you want something less impressive, spend less money on a PS4 Pro (near 4K gaming), Xbox One S (4K movies and streaming with decent 2K gaming), or PS4 (great 2K gaming), depending on the features and price you're looking for. Seems pretty simple, to me -- I'll take it all for $499 in the Xbox One X.

It's an expansion of the X1 family. It's not intended to pale the X1 in sales but give the fan base the option to enjoy games in full 4K. It's not the next gen so don't expect this to put the X1 aside. Why is everyone making it a big deal?! What's the point of the Pro can also be of a question. Backwards compatibility is a plus but im not buying a new system to play old games.. I really tried to like it but i see past their trickery.. They stepped up their indie scene so ill give them that but it wont move consoles.. Are they crazy? Not one new AAA exclusive that i care for.. The closest it came was a multiplatform game. For half a second I was excited about Metro too. Then I think I realized it's going to look almost the same on Pro.

@Moldy I'm a DIE HARD xbox gamer but I agree w/the article, what's the point? Although it may be stronger than the Pro, it needs to be much more than the strongest console on the market. Pro is in a great position because of it's extensive library, the X needed to be cheaper; needed more exclusives to even be considered. I really have no idea as to who MS is trying to target; who is their Demographic? I have a 456,000 gamerscore and most of my friends are 300k + and we're not buying it. We're probably as well defined of a demo that you can get, and we're backing off of it. Had it been 399$, it would have been a great piece of TECH to own, emphasis on just TECH. At 499.99$, it isn't a great ANYTHING to own, considering the anemic lineup. A great software showing, along with a 449.99$ pricepoint, would have made it more console, and less of a TECH piece, but being 499.99$, and having no games. ......just a nice piece of tech. At the end of the day, if you want a PS purchase the original PS4, if you want a XBOX, purchase the Slim. There's no niche for the One X, and both companies should have waited til next gen for 4k gaming!

I'm a PC gamer, who has a PS4 Pro and Switch for exclusives. There is absolutely no point to the Xbox for a PC gamer with even a 1060 or a rx480, hell even a 980ti or a 290x.

The games came up short but I think it's for the long run, when PlayStation 5 comes out another console upgrade will come and by than the game library will be huge and Sony would have to start again with its new console but they will be ok because they got a solid line up of first party developers.

It's for performance. It's the top of the line Xbox. It's point is to be available for people like me have 4K hdr tv's, who will pay a bit more to have a better performing experience (hence the 4K hdr tv). These points are so f'ing stupid. Are people this stupid? It's one thing if you don't want one but to not understand the point is just stupid.

If you had a 1080p tv would you just watch VHS tapes on it or would you go out and buy a bluray player to actually use the screen for what it can do. Same goes with 4K owners.

Its a console directed at the hardcore audience. MS realise that the could hire supermodels to give out handjobs with every xbox purchase and most of you ponies still wouldn't buy one because you think MS is this big evil corporation that is trying to steal your rights and a gamer and a free human being because they were upfront about their intentions and sony kept theirs hidden and changed them in secret with the backlash 4 years ago. Games dictates the hardware console sales. Majority of people who play console games usually buy the hardware that offer the most number of exclusive games. This is true especially to people with meager income. This is the reason why the sales of PS4 will increase the prices will eventually becomes affordable to most people. People are still buying the PS3 for chrissakes.
