NiOh, Zelda, Mario Kart, Persona 5, NeiR all selling millions and get great reviews. not bad for a zombie industry.

donthate2598d ago

Not bad for a dead industry yes, but bad for an industry that used to be at the center. It used to be that we expected greatness from Japan, today it is a surprise if we do.

gangsta_red2598d ago

Even a broken clock is right twice. The games that come out of Japan, a few are bound to be good no doubt about it. But I still see a lot of Japanese devs still having trouble adjusting to the development styles and requirements of today.

Those games you mentioned are great but still a drop in the bucket compared to the many games over the years that western developers have released to praise and sales.

NewMonday2598d ago

@gangsta_red

actually Japanese games consistently get good reviews even in the tough years, but now they also sell well.

gangsta_red2598d ago (Edited 2598d ago )

Those games are still few and far between in terms of sales and great reviews. What we have recently is really an anomaly and really shouldn't be confused with any type of return to greatness, at least not just yet.

I would like to see even more Japanese games start releasing and being more in the highly anticipated category than what we see now from western developers.

mikeslemonade2598d ago

Japanese Dev has been going downhill since FF13 became multiplatform, that was the day that marked the transition.

gangsta_red2598d ago

@mike

I disagree, I think it happened when HD development started. At that time Japanese developers were not only struggling to keep dates but most were bowing out in favor of mobile.

neoandrew2598d ago

And yet, Nier has terrible bugs on PC, game breaking bugs, no patch from the release date, i wanted to experience it, but i can't.

Lennoxb632598d ago

Outside of NiOh and NeiR, those other games have been huge franchises for years and almost guaranteed to sell.

Godmars2902598d ago

"Expected greatness?"

That's the issue right there. I was expecting fun. Games with complex stories interlaced into gameplay. Instead into the HD gaming era, where frame rates and AA lasing became the focus, open worlds where story meant nothing, they pretty much kept 16-bit mentalities towards 3D gaming.

mikeslemonade2598d ago

^Gangsta Red

He development is vague because HD technology was before 2006 and existed before consoles had HD. That's not really a shift, that was more of a sign.

NewMonday2598d ago

@gangsta_red
"few and far between "
NiOh, Zelda, Mario Kart, Persona 5, NeiR all came out in the past few months

Public Library for VideoGame development. Developers should start sharing resources, "proprietary" and "intellectual property" feels like its becoming restrictions not incentive to make games better. Videogame industries should start sharing stuff with each other more, because sharing is the essence of videogame evolution. Another idea, Patreon funded AAA JRPG, 2 years development time each, 500 staff, $5 million a monthly, 5 millions patrons, $120 per person, could work.

Japanese executives suck
Vs
Japanese developers rule

boomtube19872598d ago (Edited 2598d ago )

Japanese developers over all cannot compete against western devs. It isnt the 80s and 90s. Japanese devs need to learn and master shooters and sportd games. They are being outplayed by superior western devs on console specific genres...most importantly shooters. JRPG are a small market to rest of the world. Very very few japanese games interest rest of the world in home console business

remixx1162598d ago

No we have enough shooters as it is please don't suggest that. We need more games like persona and nier. Huge stories with worlds and gameplay intertwined with great characters and originality.

That is what Japanese devs are good at. Hell we got 3 AAA first person shooters last year (4 if you count modern warfare remaster) and 2 the year before that.

Sorry, if this was off topic but I think this video deserves to be trending right now throughout all communities.

BLizardXD2599d ago (Edited 2599d ago )

It seems more people are voting with their wallets instead on the quality of the game. as a result you can expect that many developers are critical to meet everyone's expectations. this of course sends many developers to the drawing board or to making mobile games instead. japan is actually pretty big on mobile gaming.

DevilOgreFish2598d ago (Edited 2598d ago )

Well Things have certainly changed. Games use to be sold as is, no game patches or internet breathing down necks for something of AAA quality. Also everything in games were unlockable. Not to mention game development costs are through the roof now for decent current gen quality, and Even more for AAA quality titles. It's way more complicated now then It's been.

bouzebbal2598d ago

i was thinking the same.
he is prob talking about his dev team.
thank God jap game development is there. western games are copy paste of each other i feel like.

yellowgerbil2598d ago

oh cool another "western games suck" hipster
COD, Halo, Assassins Creed, Destiny, Overwatch, GTA, Skyrim, Uncharted, Horizon, Forza, GOW and Gears of War.
Quality of listed games may vary as does every thing else about the games, not a one feels like a copy and paste of another game out there.

bouzebbal2598d ago (Edited 2598d ago )

@yellowgerbil:
i hope you are doing it on purpose.
Western TPS are the same with same mechanics. some games execute them better than others but the problem with western is that everyone copies the successful game and when it works, they don't improve. sequels feel like skins and DLCs of previous game.. this is at least how i feel about them.

if you love to play COD, AC every year and it makes you happy then it's good for you. i have other expectations and i love to play something new and refreshing once in a while

Liqu1d2598d ago

@yellowgerbil That list does not help you argument at all.

yellowgerbil2598d ago

@Bouzebbal
So all games that have a double jump are automatically a copy paste?
You know what is new and refreshing. Dreams a western dev game, Horizon Zero Dawn another western developed game
You know what isn't refreshing dynasty warriors 1000000 or yet another jrpg with spiky hair and terrible voice acting with graphics that still look like a ps2 game.
The games I posted I don't necessarily care for (I don't even own an xbox so couldn't play halo gears or forza if I wanted to) What my point was is each of those games is a very different experience from eachother.
