Exclusive: First gameplay and details from Phantom Dust’s HD re-release - Polygon

Nicks sit down with Microsoft Studios Publishing creative director Adam Isgreen for a first look at the Phantom Dust's HD upgrade, coming soon to Xbox One and PC.

XiNatsuDragnel2963d ago

This is nice game I'm going to support this.

Magnetar2963d ago

I'm with you, can't wait replay this gem. I also hope it does well and reacieves a proper sequel.

Kingthrash3602963d ago

I mean, this isn't pretty. Why'd this take so long to be shown?

Magnetar2963d ago

Read the article, they mention it.

AngelicIceDiamond2963d ago

Exactly how I remember it, Though I don't like how ppl can buy a set of skills instead of being a man and simply earn the skills in game.

XanderZane2963d ago

I'll have to get a copy of this. I never did play the original. Graphically, it's nothing special and I hope they will still make a true sequel in the future, but the gameplay looks nice.

rdgneoz32963d ago

Sad that it went from a remaster to a re-release. Looks decent, but nothing like the prerendered footage shown in 2014 of what could have been.

Mikefizzled2963d ago

Two completely different projects though. The cancelled version was leaked a while back, as seen here. https://youtu.be/DE3MRVQk8E...
There was also articles about how Microsoft surprised the dev team showing the prerendered trailer at E3.

AngelicIceDiamond2963d ago

This is a OG Xbox game. Saying "it looks bad" would be to say the upcoming Jak and Daxter re release "looks bad" Omg its a PS2 game just like this game is a Orginal Xbox game.

andrewsquall2963d ago

@AngelicIceDiamond Except even when Phantom Dust released in 2004, the 2001 original Jak and Daxter STILL kicked its ass technically.

ThatOneRiggaNob2962d ago

lol the fact 27 ppl upvoted you just shows how misinformed people on this site are about anything Xbox. These were 2 different projects.

4Sh0w2963d ago (Edited 2963d ago )

Yeah but it's just a remaster of an OG Xbox game= fan service, NOT suppose to be a new release, no different than BC games. New releases will be shown at E3.

Cohagen4202962d ago

It might as well be a BC title at this point.

ABizzel12963d ago

Looks like a HD Wii or 360 launch title... They should have done a full remaster since they were already recoding some tools.

Saranya2963d ago

They cannot find a studios to make a new one.

dillydadally2962d ago

@Saranya They HAD a studio making a new one. It looked close to done and a LOT better than this, and then they mysteriously canceled it!

ABizzel12962d ago

There's all kinds of details about what happened. Apparently there was only a 5m budget or something, and MS kept adding more and more demands, but the 5m budget wasn't going to cover it, so the dev asked for 2m - 3m more and MS cancelled it after investing 2m into it. Thus this mess we have here was born.

DigitalRaptor2960d ago

Yep, looks damn rough.

Sad that this has been one of the more hyped releases from Xbox this year, and it's more or less the same kind of visuals as a casual PS2 release on PS4 (actually no, worse).

DaFeelz2963d ago

Drop Scalebound and keep this? It does not look good. This game needs to be overhauled, not remastered. Good luck

Mikefizzled2963d ago

I can't even believe you're comparing the two. Scalebound was ridiculously expensive compared to this. Microsoft has reportedly lost $2m already by cancelling the previous version of Phantom Dust.

DaFeelz2963d ago

So further pursue a fruitless avenue? And this isn't a comparison. More so an observation of yet another bad decision on MS's part. I usually reserve my head shaking for Nintendo's odd business choices but lately, MS's choices border on confounding. This game is gonna bomb. I was interested in this until I saw that video. Its horrendous

4Sh0w2963d ago (Edited 2963d ago )

Huh?, lol, this is like a Arcade game release, it costs chump change to do this type of HD re-release, how the hell can it fail when it will only takes a small fraction of the Xbox fans who ASKED FOR IT on Xbox forums to buy it to make a profit?

-This is in addition to what will be shown at E3, it's NOT replacing anything.

TFJWM2963d ago

@4Sh0w How is it not replacing something when it was announced right after the total remake of PD was cancelled...

Mikefizzled2963d ago

@TFJWM Sorry but you're just wrong. This was announced at last years E3, back when Scalebound was still in active development. Shannon Loftis announced it on an IGN show after their conference.

TFJWM2962d ago

@Mikefizzled Umm where did I say anything about Scalebound? I said this was replacing the cancelled PD remake...

+ Show (2) more repliesLast reply 2962d ago
spicelicka2963d ago

What the does that have to with Scalebound lol?

Regardless of how much of a loss it was to cancel Scalebound you can't really call it a bad decision when you don't know the reasoning behind it. Sure it affects the Xbox negatively, but the game did not meet its deadlines. What you saw in the demo were most likely just the completed portions of the game. If the developer isn't finishing the game how much time and money can the publisher really waste?

DaFeelz2963d ago (Edited 2963d ago )

I explained my reasoning above. This is about choices. Now, I don't know if you watched that video, but I seriously have a hard time accepting that ANYONE watched that and said " Man! Now I'm really excited! Can't wait to get my hands on this bad boy! Day ONE!" I am really hoping that MS swings for the fences at E3. Because at this particular point in time, taking into account the choices they've made thus far... they're in trouble

spicelicka2963d ago

Your reasoning is not right. You can argue that their choices have been bad or that they may be in trouble, that's fine, but it has nothing to do with this game.

Yes I saw the video and no I don't care about this game, I never played the original and i don't plan on playing this. But that doesn't mean it's a bad investment. This is a cult classic game from what I know and it has a lot of fans who are excited to buy it. If there was no demand, MS would have NEVER considered making this.

You're under the impression that releasing this somehow takes away resources that could've been invested in a proper AAA game, but that's not how it works. This is tiny game, it's chump change for them, a side investment that will likely result in profit which they CAN invest in other games. At the end of the day every game is made to earn profit and having this game on the platform is better than not having it.

DaFeelz2963d ago (Edited 2963d ago )

You're projecting, but not unreasonably. That's not what I'm thinking. What I'm thinking is, what I said above. The game needs to be overhauled, not remastered. I don't care where they allocate their funds. But if you're gonna do something, do it right. It's a polished turd. It needs to be completely rebuilt. Ground up. That's all I'm saying. So, bad choice and a waste of money.

4Sh0w2963d ago (Edited 2963d ago )

DaFeelz,

lol, That makes no sense at all. First you were talking all about it failing, couldn't answer logically HOW, so now it's just a "waste", ....pffft, for who? For YOU Im sure, but not for Phatom Dust fans.

I am 100% sure if Sony released a hd re-release ps1 classic game for a few bucks on ps4 and some random guy came in screaming "eeew that needs a overhaul" you'd have tons of ps fans shouting that's not the point, it's a classic game and it's about nostalgia & gameplay. Plus Im sure if they invested a ton into a complete overhaul built from the ground up, THEN you'd say, "'sigh, I'd would of rather them invested the money in a totally new IP, Im not a PD fan." -Its not projecting its how you sound when your post lacks logic to back up your claims (fruitless, fail, waste).

spicelicka2963d ago

^Ok that's agreeable. It went from a remaster to a re-release, which is lame no question there. I realize now that the second part of your comment mentions this.

DaFeelz2963d ago

Cool. If only more "discussions" went like this here at the old N4G. See ya on the next one. Happy gaming

AngelicIceDiamond2963d ago

"More so an observation of yet another bad decision on MS's part." Ok so you don't like because of the graphics trust me that's what it is well its a Xbox game OG Xbox game. You've never played it before its one of the most addicting games I've ever played, I can guarantee you its far from a bad I've only put close in close to 1000 hours back in the day. I'm glad its coming back you should never judge something that you've never even touched.

LordJamar2963d ago

anything Microsoft does is never good enough for you ppl regardless not like you will own a xbox any way

DaFeelz2963d ago

Nope, I own an XB1S, a Pro, the Switch and I will have the Scorpio. Day 1 (as long as CD3 launches with it) I want MS to do better. I've said before and I'll say it again, I want everyone to win. But in order to win, better choices need to be made. That's all.

Wow, 4k on PC and more than likely Scorpio and 1080p on Xbox One. That is good to know. ;)

http://n4g.com/news/2020826...

I always get a kick going back to this article and reading a lot of the replies I got.

uptownsoul2963d ago

4K resolution on PC and Scorpio with textures & assets from 2004 does not make for a good looking game.

gangsta_red2963d ago (Edited 2963d ago )

Never claimed it did, but people rushing in to proclaim the game is 480p does not make those folks look any better.

Besides...this is a niche game....

uptownsoul2963d ago (Edited 2963d ago )

@gangsta_red - "but people rushing in to proclaim the game is 480p does not make those folks look any better"

Those "people rushing in to proclaim the game is 480p" had no idea that Shannon Loftis's tweet on June 15, 2016 (seen here: https://twitter.com/shannon... ) would be incorrect.

gangsta_red2963d ago

It's too bad those people never saw this article and Isgreen's tweet before getting served crow.

http://www.icxm.net/x/phant...

Unless having no idea is an excuse for ignorance displayed in those comments.

Liqu1d2963d ago

"Besides...this is a niche game...."

According to you only Sony fans say this for failed games. Keep up the hypocrisy, you guys continue to embarrass yourselves.

Gazondaily2963d ago

☝️Someone didn't get the point

andrewsquall2963d ago

@gangsta_red How about the people who said a year ago it is going to look like meh and a complete waste of 5 quid of your money if it was even at that price? Are those people wrong too lol?

gangsta_red2963d ago

@septic

Lol, it's lost on Liqu1d. Best to just let him think that.

@andrewsqual
Did I ever say they were? Compelling arguements some of you are making up.

DigitalRaptor2960d ago (Edited 2960d ago )

People rushed in to make a point that someone in charge of the project at MS had actually said these words: https://twitter.com/shannon...

There was literally nothing in Adam Isgreen's tweet that translated to prove the kinds of things you were claiming or criticising others for, either. So as uptownsoul said, there was nothing available at the point in time to prove otherwise.

Gangsta_red is trying so hard to act as though he was "right" in that article at that point in time when in fact no other substantial information had surfaced that the game wouldn't be as described in that article. I mean it was odd at the time that someone at MS even entertained that it would be sub-HD. Somehow to him, that translates to: "i sure showed them". You sure showed that you were bold to make a guess. Yep, a guess.

You will tell your grandkids about it one day......I'm sure.

gangsta_red2963d ago (Edited 2963d ago )

It's already written in the halls of time. For our grandkids, grandkids to enjoy.

Cohagen4202962d ago

You want credit for randomly guessing correctly about the resolution of a game from 2 gens ago? Time to up your dosage there..

gangsta_red2962d ago

Randomly guessing? Time to go back to remedial reading studies 101.

Pancit_Canton2963d ago

Who needs a Scorpio, if you can have this graphics. lol

rainslacker2963d ago

I'm sold on the animations alone.

Top 20 Xbox Games (20-11)

Alex S. from Link-Cable writes: "Microsoft’s first console holds a very special in the hearts of many gamers. The ‘beast’ as it was called in some circles absolutely trounced its competitors when it came to raw power allowing near-PC level games to be playable on your TV for the first time ever. But beyond processing power the system is also to thank for pushing the standardization of online gameplay, something which today is a must have, no matter how you decide to play games. So in honor of Microsoft’s big, green tank and to maybe remind Microsoft of which games need to end up on the Xbox One store (wink, wink) we’re counting down the Top 20 Best Xbox Games."

Some games are better left in the past, and Phantom Dust appears to be one of them

Gamesradar: "Sometimes there’s nothing better than revisiting an Xbox old game you love. Sure, they rarely quite live up to modern standards, but they can be like a comforting digital hug thanks to the familiar surroundings and sense of nostalgia. Other times it’s just nice to treat yourself to a bit of a history lesson for a classic that you’ve missed.

After all, there are so many that deserve a second chance, perhaps all gussied up with an HD touch-up and some extra little treats. So with that in mind I recently decided to pick up Phantom Dust, since a fair few people had raved about the original and how ‘unique’ it is. I figured I’d discover something new by playing it and maybe learn a thing or two about games from that era. But all I did was leave disappointed."

The game was never more than a cult classic, gained some name recognition because of that, MS wanted to play up on that hoping for a "new" online IP while failing to invest into it creatively. That's why the remake died in development and why the remaster died soon after re-release: The original game was never "All That".

goken2841d ago

alas such is the state of Xbox first party ips... limited being a generous term here. kinda makes their treatment of fable and alan wake more baffling. it's not like they are spoilt with choices

2841d ago
PhoenixUp2841d ago

I'd rather Microsoft rerelease Kung Fu Chaos

Summons752841d ago

NInja Theory's only good game to date. Loved that game.

Sunny_D2841d ago

They released Senua's Sacrifice which is great.

mocaak2841d ago (Edited 2841d ago )

Their worst scoring game (the only one with mediocre score on metacritic), is their only good game? Interesting.

Gameseeker_Frampt2840d ago (Edited 2840d ago )

They released Enslaved: Odyssey to the West which is great.

Yohshida2841d ago

A lot of people played the OG Xbox version when it was free. Sure the games is wired and outdated, but a reboot could be a great game.

Yohshida2841d ago

They werent happy with the studio that worked on it before and said the project will continue. But we might never see it.

Goldby2841d ago

More like MS wanted to add more (single player campaign) without adding addition funds to the project.

They also got another company to make the E3 video for it which was completely different than what the phantom dust remake was going to look and play like.

But ya, blame it on the studio

Liqu1d2841d ago

Yes. The developers had a budget of $5 million to make a multiplayer only reboot, then MS later said they wanted a single player mode and other things but wouldn't increase the budget or timeframe. The developers tried to convince MS they needed at least $7-8 million to make the game. MS refused and 1 week later they cancelled the project. It ruined the developers. Kotaku did a good article on what happened.

https://kotaku.com/how-a-sm...

They had the chance to revive Perfect Dark, they wanted to do Battletoads but MS said no.

Godmars2902841d ago

@Liqu1d:
So MS just doesn't want to put the money into games.
