Exclusive Project Scorpio Interview With Phil Spencer

Phil Spencer talks to Benny about Project Scorpio, E3, upcoming Xbox games and one of his favourite titles.

XiNatsuDragnel2975d ago

Interesting interview, but that beep though .?

All I remember is this the guy think that BIG SERVICE Based games (marketing term for Micro transactions) is what he likes. You guys are DEFENDING a company that does not want

“The audience for those big story-driven games… I won’t say it isn’t as large, but they’re not as consistent,” Spencer began. “You’ll have things like Zelda or Horizon: Zero Dawn that’ll come out, and they’ll do really well, but they don’t have the same impact that they used to have, because the big service-based games are capturing such a large amount of the audience.”

XiNatsuDragnel2974d ago

Yep I don't want that type of future for any company. No service based future like Netflix of games please.

darthv722974d ago (Edited 2974d ago )

I think he was seeing the success of games like the telltale series and destiny as key points and how their popularity is growing because you make one initial investment and then you add on new chapters to the story and keep expanding on what you have initially. It may cost more in the long run but you get more out of it as it is always evolving into deeper more involving game play.

I just hate seeing games released incomplete and then having to wait for the DLC in order to get the rest. While I do prefer more complete games, we all know those take time to really flesh out before release so in the interim... there is these episodic releases. The intention is to provide a lower cost of entry and then offer more expansion over time to keep the person coming back for more.

Chris122974d ago

Indyman77, where does he say he supports it? He is talking about the way gaming is going in general. Get a grip buddy.

XanderZane2974d ago

He's basically saying that once you've beaten games like Horizon and Zelda, then you're pretty much done. The lasting appeal is smaller for those games, where as games like Destiny, Overwatch, Call of Duty, etc..can continue to amass a larger amount of gamers and go on for a couple of years or more. He's not saying that big story driven games aren't needed on XB1 or other platforms. They obviously are still very much needed. Did you read that whole interview?

Bla Bla Bla..lets see the console already, tired of waiting until E3 which gets later every year.

FITgamer2975d ago

It's been on the first or second Tuesday of June for like last 8 years. Not getting later every year. If I remember correctly there were even few years when it was in July.

Bruh2975d ago

Aren't they doing it Sunday this year? So isn't it earlier or am I reading the days of the week wrong?

4Sh0w2975d ago

Yep, it's on Sunday.

Phil's a good guy, looking forward to the show.

Maxor2975d ago

Yeah the more they hype this the more skeptical I get. Show me the frame rates or GTFO.

annoyedgamer2975d ago

Correct me if I am mistaken but wasn't E3 in may once?

Mystogan2975d ago

It's actually earlier than usual. At least the MS conference.

Neat interview, Phil Spencer is a great guy who speaks honest from the heart and the perspective of a gamer and dev. Of course he also slips in the occasional Xbox advertising, but ultimately it is his job. Xbox gaming is in good hands with him:)

indyman77772974d ago (Edited 2974d ago )

Not my perspective, I'm not fool by the term service based. I know it means Micro transactions, like Netflixx, and DLC, and paying for in game transactions.

In this interview he basically told you he does not believe in the exclusive games like Horizon Zero dawn or Zelda
instead he believes in the SERVICE BASED business model.

Gwynbleidd2974d ago

I don't know man, according to your link he also says:

"“As an industry, I want to make sure both narrative-driven single-player games and service-based games have the opportunity to succeed. I think that’s critical for us,” Spencer said."

He is thinking about a new genre of games. Pay a Netflix like monthly subscription and get episodical games like the last Hitman. Games like that perfectly fit this service and I would try that out. I think it is a great addition to gaming as devs would have the opportunity to take more risks without spending millions over years into a project that could fail. Kind of like TV shows do with pilot episodes.
I am not saying this should be the standard model, but it might be a great addition if done right.

Aenea2975d ago

See, see, Scorpio is getting exclusives after all! 😀

badz1492975d ago

Scorpio exclusives? so...how is it the same gen as the Xbone but still has its own exclusives? doesn't make sense unless it's a next gen machine for them

Aenea2975d ago (Edited 2975d ago )

Sigh, look at the damn smiley, don't be so serious!

The headline says "Exclusive Project Scorpio........." and I made a joke.....

-------
People don't read the article (or listen) anymore, heck not even the headlines it seems!

badz1492975d ago

@Aenea

Yeah, already noticed the jab but couldn't edit any longer. Nicely played there.

I did commented before I watched the whole thing, though.

indyman77772974d ago

Microsoft has said many times they will not split the xbox one and the scorpio. They have said no exclusive on xbox one scropio that is not on xbox one base model. So if it is exclusive to Microsoft it will be on BOTH consoles. That is the only kind of exclusive you will see. Just like PS4 and PS4 pro.

ShadowKnight2975d ago (Edited 2975d ago )

Sucks for the Xbox one install base. Their forcing the user base to buy a Scorpio to play exclusives. 😁😂

Rude-ro2975d ago

I do wonder what Microsoft will say when they start their advertising of where to play the best version like they did last gen...
Like, will they say and/or the worst version on Xbox one?
They painted themselves into a bit of a corner with how much horsepower they are throwing into the console just to play Xbox one games.
Sure, there will be differences, but not noticeable. Not like 720p vs 900p plus performance.

freshslicepizza2975d ago

@ShadowKnight
"Sucks for the Xbox one install base. Their forcing the user base to buy a Scorpio to play exclusives."

what are ranting about now? Aenea is talking about the title, exclusive interview but of course you want to keep trying to muddle the message. it was nice to see an independant company like digital foundry get hands on and write their own script of what they saw. nice to see some transparency.

Aenea2975d ago

@moldy

Thank you moldy for being one of the few who got my joke!

gangsta_red2975d ago (Edited 2975d ago )

At what point does he say this?

I am seriously am not going to listen to all of this

gangsta_red2975d ago (Edited 2975d ago )

Lmao, okay...you seriously got me on that one.

1-0, Aenea pulls ahead.

This is why the edit button needs to be kept longer....*sigh

Aenea2975d ago (Edited 2975d ago )

Haha, sowwies!

And look at all the serious replies I got, many didn't even read the headline!

And agreed, the 15 minutes editing thing is crazy short...

2975d ago
ShadowKnight2975d ago

I knew it was a joke I just wanted to irritate Moldybread lol. Done with that rhoi8

Aenea2975d ago

You don't need to irritate him, he doesn't even own a current gen console!

True, they have pretty different audiences..and some People just have both at home or a PS and a PC that emulates more or less everything from Nintendo.

Knightofelemia11h ago

Xbox hasn't been a competitor since the XB360. Last generation and this generation Sony has been running circles around Xbox. As for Sony vs Nintendo Sony runs circles yes but I don't really see Nintendo as competition. Nintendo does their own thing and it works.

Details are important. Console sales yes. Overall games Xbox seems to be doing fairly well in that department.

drivxr10h ago

Console wars are over.

Eventually, everyone else will catch up to this fact.

attilayavuzer9h ago(Edited 9h ago)

I think it's all PS fans have left at this point. Console wars were always a competition for fourth place behind Nintendo, PC and mobile. If Xbox evaporates into a hybrid virtual platform, then PS will be perennially left in last place.

Christopher9h ago

Strange, I recall all those FCC documents and witness testimonies saying the exact opposite... Guess Microsoft doesn't know what it's talking about?

Destiny108010h ago

microsoft wanted to crush sony into dust and they had the money to do it, but with such weak leadership it was always going to fail

Reaper22_9h ago

Had the money? They still have the money but the industry has changed since xbox 360. Microsoft is the number one publisher in gaming. I'd hardly call that failing.

IRetrouk8h ago(Edited 8h ago)

The industry hasn't changed though, just ms, Microsoft was the no1 publisher for a month in december 2024, the actual no1 for fy2024 was tencent if game sales are all that's being counted.

Profchaos8h ago

Money doesn't mean you'll be successful large corporations have entered and failed before like Nec
