Switch Likely To Be Second Console Of Choice Over Scorpio For Most; Will Sell As Much As 3DS:Pachter

The Nintendo Switch is out, and it is so far a huge success for Nintendo- but the question is, just how much of one can it be in the long run? With especially the extremely high end Xbox Scorpio launching later this year, does the Switch have much of a future as it gets left behind hopelessly again as far as tech goes?

It seems Nintendo can only get by in making secondary consoles

Neonridr3010d ago

yet make a boatload of money doing it?

skydragoonityx3010d ago

Nintendo loves the 2nd position like a fat kid love cake. The scorpio on the 2nd hand im not surprised that most people wouldnt want it simply for 1 reason, lack of games

MVGeneral3010d ago (Edited 3010d ago )

Nintendo is a beta. Nintendo loves being second because they know they can't compete with the alpha. So they try to be all flashy with their gimmicks and "being different" approach. They aren't leaders. They are followers. They need to catch up on a lot of things. Especially their online. And get rid of friend codes. Maybe add some trophy. And some extra hard drive space. And some multimedia apps. Surround sound, optical digital out, maybe? Oh and some better graphics. And much much more. Sigh.

Xx_Pistol_xX3010d ago

That's not anything to be proud of when the company is clearly making fake demand on alot of it's products and overcharging for everything from Hardware to Amiibos.

abstractel3009d ago

I don't see Switch being anything more than the Wii or the Wii U; a fad. They may make money, but as a gamer I would have much rather have had Horizon Zero Dawn's graphics with the charm and nostalgia of Zelda. Nintendo isn't going to give me that. They seem intent on giving me experiences that I played 5-10 years ago and masquerading it as something new with gimmicks.

Nintendo is not the company I grew up with, personally I find that sad. Sony is now that company that speaks to me, with their multiple, incredibly talented first party studios. I'm happy for the people that are happy with the Switch, but I wonder if they'll be happy with it during the same length I'll be happy with my PS4/PS4 Pro.

Realplaya3009d ago

@mvgeneral do you even understand what you say. If they are followers then why don't they make a Xbox or Sony system? They are leaders and others follow and guess what they don't follow market trends they are their own trendsetters.

indysurfn3009d ago

So if Nintendo is making secondary consoles and will be Microsoft Scorpio, what are you saying about Microsoft? Since the highest they have EVER placed is SECOND!?

Just saying....Long live SonyTendo

XanderZane3009d ago (Edited 3009d ago )

They made a boatload of money off the Wii U? The Switch is overpriced along with all it's overpriced accessories.

Neonridr3009d ago

@XanderZane - no but they certainly made a boatload off the Wii and 3DS.

QUIMICOMORTAL3009d ago

sure! they made soooo much money with wiiu...right? RIGHT?

TheCommentator3009d ago (Edited 3009d ago )

Wii U didn't exactly make a boatload... it sunk like the Titanic.

Also, for all the "success" the Switch had in Japan with its release, the Wii U outsold it during its' launch. That said, it's too early to even mention Switch and success in the same sentence.

princejb1343009d ago

@Mvgeneral

Your an idiot. How can they be followers if their doing their own thing regardless of what the competition is doing.
The only follower here is you. Hating on Nintendo because is the cool thing to do.

XanderZane3009d ago

@Neonridr
Yes, but both the Wii and the 3DS won their generations and weren't secondary consoles. The Wii U and Virtual Boy and Gameboy Pocket were probably Nintendo's worse products.

You guys falling for the early numbers for Switch. Any new console sells out. And with Nintendo it's always production issues when one of their system even remotely sells well.

Scorpio is too little too late, and Switch will sell 30-40 mil life time. Scorpio will sell under 10 mil before the Xbox Next and PS5 come out.

Neonridr3010d ago

the system still sold.. regardless. It's not like we are talking about a couple of hundred thousand units here, we are talking a couple of million units so far. People still have to want to buy the device for any shortages (real or artificial) to matter.

Nu3010d ago (Edited 3010d ago )

Scorpion will sell 10million life time if even that.
I'll only buy a Scorpion if it becomes a PC hybrid with KB & Mouse support.
I want to build a decent rig especially now that the play anywhere feature is available. Microsoft has very little exclusivity power. I think it's time to jump to PC exclusively.

AngelicIceDiamond3010d ago

You're funny.

30 40 million ok fine but Scorpion life time under 10 million....

April fools came early for you thanks for the gut busting laugh.

tyasia03010d ago

@AngelicIceDiamond

It's been three and a half years years and Xbone has only sold 25 million. No console that plays the same games will sell better than the cheaper original.

notachance3010d ago

depends on the pricing, if Scorpio is priced at $400 it'll move quite a lot of units, possibly more than 10mil. Higher than that I don't think it'll reach that number, especially since there's yet any talk about XB bolstering its first party line-ups.

MasterCornholio3009d ago (Edited 3009d ago )

I'm not sure how many units the Scorpio will sell however Microsoft said themselves that they don't expect it to outsell the base model.

P.S

By base model they mean the Xbox One + Xbox One S

Edit: Also the same is happening with the PS4 and PS4 Pro. The system that is selling the most is the base model and not the Pro one.

Kingthrash3603009d ago (Edited 3009d ago )

@not a chance. .....so you think MS thinks "premium price" is cheaper than the xbo at launch?????? 100$ cheaper??????????????????????? ????
Wow. Ok. Be prepared.
It will never sell more than xbo. . Just like the pro will never sell more than the base ps4. Also why the switch can and likly will sell more than the pro and scorpio. ..price. refer to the wii....and also think about the hand held crowd.
Smh the potential is very real.

Switch is a primary console for many. A true legendary gaming experience and the world's very first hybrid console ever made. A dream come true. With Zelda, Mario, SSH, Animal Crossing, Pokemon, Monster Hunter, Dragon Quest, Xenoblade, Shin Megami Tensei, Yo-Kai Watch, Bravely, Story of Seasons, Project Diva, Splatoon, and many MANY MORE, there is NO reason not to buy a Switch, and there are so many reasons to make the legendary hybrid console your primary platform of choice!

Nyxus3010d ago

You could write their press releases. :P

MVGeneral3010d ago (Edited 3010d ago )

Yeah but their games all look crap. Like it was made for the ps2. Outdated and old. Only kids, and Nintendo die hards buy and play switch. Lol. That's the truth. Why do all the games and consoles from Nintendo look so weak tho.

bouzebbal3010d ago (Edited 3010d ago )

primary console for many? i wont discuss that..
but tell me, how do you manage to play all these games on it? are they out where you live? i would really understand why it is the primary then, with all these games you have at once.

Kingdomcome2473010d ago

I haven't been a part of Nintendo's consumer base for quite some time now, but I'm by no means a Nintendo detractor either. With that being said, though... jeeze, dude. Your comment was borderline nauseating. It reads as if it were written by a poorly coded PR bot.

I don't see why that's a bad thing since as a secondary system it can still sell very well. Plus it doubles as a portable which will only increase its appeal.

acekaze3010d ago

But weirdly enough, they are and always have been the king of handheld consoles, heck theres more 3ds on the market than ps4.

SR3883009d ago

It hard to beat ps4 as 90% of people focus on one thing... Graphix and visual power... Hence ps4 does so well, if ps4 had graphix of ps2 it would sell at all

MVGeneral3009d ago

No, And good and mature games. Not games rated E for everyone. And not games that look like they came out of the 90's

FinalFantasyFanatic3009d ago

Nope, PS had a good launch and it provided the best catalogue of games, that's why they're the undisputed top dog this gen. They weren't last gen, it was a struggle since the beginning for them. WiiU tanked and the Xone had a bad launch/lack of games. Nintendo and Microsoft dropped the ball hard this gen and now they have to play catch-up.

DarXyde3009d ago

If we assume people ALWAYS bought a Nintendo console as a secondary console, they would always sell the most units.

While I do own all three consoles (and a Switch), I'm guilty of using my Nintendo devices as secondary consoles. And why not? If I only had two, I'd definitely take PS4 and Switch. I'd miss about a handful of games that interest me on the Xbox (for now, anyway).

It's a questionable strategy for sure, but it works for them.

MoveTheGlow3009d ago

True - in a way, that's a market niche they can monopolize on. And despite the whole TV dock advertising strategy and how they're saying "no really, it's a home console," it's better as a portable. PS4/Switch is a good combo.

I have no friggin' idea what the Scorpio will cost, and neither does Bolt, so that's all up in the air.

XanderZane3009d ago

It'll be my 3rd console of choice if they actually get some decent 3rd party support and lower the prices on those accessories. I'll wait a year or so and see what they got after that. Scorpio will probably come after I get the PS4 Pro.

JasonKCK3010d ago

porkChop He got the GT job because he was literally the only Wall Street analyst who would comment on the gaming industry. His motive is greed, not gamers.

porkChop3010d ago

That doesn't really have anything to do with what I said. I didn't say anything about his motives, nor do I even care what they are. The fact is, Pachter was well known before he started his show on GT, and he continued to be just as well known after GT shut down.

Aenea3010d ago (Edited 3010d ago )

"His motive is greed, not gamers."

If you like gaming and get offered such a side job would you say no? And if you say yes would it be fair if the rest of the people around here say "oh he did it because greed"?

I always feel when people say such things that they are basically just jealous....

Besides, he's a business analyst, I suspect he's earning quite a ton of money from his day job, I highly doubt that the GT job made him much money in comparison....

JasonKCK3009d ago

Aenea why does a rich Wall Street broker take a side job?

Enough said

Bathyj3009d ago

"His motive is greed, not gamers."

"why does a rich Wall Street broker take a side job?"

But you just said hes greedy. But if hes rich he doesnt need the money. Youre contradicting yourself.

Why does he do it? I dont know, maybe its in his wheelhouse and he like games. Kind of painted yourself into a corner there. Everyone thinks they know everything about everyone just because you read some crappy article on the internet and took it as gospel. Time for people to realise you dont actually know these people, or their motives.

Lmao! People want games with their console.
The current and best duo of consoles to play the most games, the best games (quantity and quality) is the PS4 and Switch.

And once the true BEAST comes out, PS5, things will only get better!

AngelicIceDiamond3010d ago

You don't care for Switch quit pretending, and yes you are pretending. You bring up Switch to make yourself look less like a fanboy. I see through you and anyone who couples in 2 consoles, one they really love and the other they don't care about to make themselves look "even" when they're far from even. Its usually from a known Sony fanboy that tends to do this I noticed.

tyasia03010d ago

PS4 Switch PC. That's the best bet.

wonderfulmonkeyman3010d ago (Edited 3010d ago )

I wouldn't say everyone does that, though.
Some of the people I know on here own and love PS3's (like I do) and PS4's, and it's really a mix of which one they value more, but they don't go out of their way to disparage their secondary systems, and openly admit to loving many games on both, even if they don't like the features of the system, or the communities behind them.

It's the ones that claim to love their secondaries, then go out of their way to to NOTHING BUT completely trash on them, under the fake argument of "fair criticism" that takes none of the system's strong points (or said system's games outside of "the big ones") into account, that you've gotta watch out for.
Secondary or not, even if heavily flawed, someone who actually loves a system doesn't spend half their time, let alone half their posts, trashing on it and its games, let alone saying it has none to begin with because they only care for AAA's, and ignore anything multiplat/indie in nature because "they can get it elsewhere".

It seems to me that a lot of people with criticisms of their secondary systems (or ones they don't own) have very little idea about how to express it in a balanced matter, let alone a fair one.

SpaceRanger3010d ago

I'm pretending?? I have a Switch, @angelicice. Got it at launch with Zelda.

I've been between Zelda, Horizon and Andromeda. Way too much to play on the best platforms currently available.

Just cause you're waiting till the late fall for Scorpio to come out doesn't mean you gotta get so flustered with people enjoying their PS4 and Switch.

81BX3009d ago

Space is salty as hell all the time! Give it a break my dude.

specialguest3009d ago

As a PC gamer with a highend rig, there's no need for a Scorpio. The Switch is an amazing console for my portable gaming needs. Bjorn-c-blocker3009d ago

The Switch is going to outsell the ps4 and the 3ds easily. It has the best software lineup by a country mile. almost every multi platform game on the standard ps4 is not outstanding performance wise. People prefer a device that they can play anywhere than a massive loud box that is based on a design from 1994.

DarkZane3009d ago

The Switch will not outsell the PS4. The PS4 is so far ahead that it's impossible for the Switch to catch up.

As for outselling the 3DS, probably not. The 3DS is at 65 millions. At best the Switch will sell the same, but it will likely sell 40 millions at most. Meanwhile the PS4 after 3.5 years is about to outsell the 3DS already.

If the PS4 sold about 60-65 millions in 3.5 years (it was at 57.3 millions shipped at the end of January, so it's likely a few millions more now), in another 3.5 years, it will easily have doubled that. It will have more than doubled it since the sales of the PS4 are far from having peaked yet. They will skyrocket even higher once the PS4 get price cuts to 249.99 and then 199.99. The PS4 is easily gonna overtake the PS1 that is at 102 millions sold and will lilkely pass the DS at 154 millions and the PS2 at 155 millions.

Dragonscale3009d ago

Why do nintendo fanboys assume everyone loves nintendo games? At least PS4 has 3rd party games which perform best as far as consoles go. PS4 is currently the fastest selling home console ever, not bad for such an archaic design. Switch has only just arrived and already its gonna outsell everything apparently. Lol.

Sony is all-in on PlayStation Plus, says its most expensive tier is thriving

Sony kicks off PS Plus' 15th anniversary by chatting with Game File about the past, present and future of its gaming subscription service: Talking price, catalogue tweaks and where the PS3 games are.

Glad, I’m about to downgrade when they raise the price. For me, I don’t really access much or care about the games they have in the library and if I do, it’d be cheaper to just buy them over time rather than stick to some expensive subscription model.

crazyCoconuts1d 14h ago

When you're new to the service you've got an avalanche of games to play. After you catch up, I agree, it's not worth it beyond the Essential tier for me.
That being said, the Essential tier is the best deal in console gaming imo, based on the monthly games you get to keep.

Profchaos1d 8h ago

Yeah same will be downgrading $214 aud is insane and we don't even get the streaming capabilities in Australia which they said would make the top level subscription cheaper.

If i was to just buy the games I actually play that come to the service id be far better off.

Ill keep the essential tier to retain the games ive collected since the ps3 and for mp but I'm not convinced of the premium tiers value any more

victorMaje1d 5h ago

Went back to essential a few months ago. I’m buying more physical and it has helped in finishing more games.

Profchaos19h ago

Tend to agree if i go to the trouble of buying a disc ill typically finish it

Alos881d 15h ago

Extra is probably the best value for money right now, Premium doesn't have anything special enough to justify paying the additional imo.

OtterX1d 14h ago

*unless you have a Portal & you catch Premium on discount during Days of Play or Black Friday.

Yea, I really do wish they'd up their effort on Premium titles, but allowing a large catalog of titles that can stream to your Portal without even having to use your PS5 is pretty awesome. We travel about 2 hours to stay with my inlaws from time to time, so it's been pretty killer to only need to take my Portal for that!

andy851d 13h ago

Yup if you have a portal premium is the best tier for sure

KyRo21h ago

Extra has been getting worse and worse each month. I've had it since it's launch and it's been great to play some games I may not have played but the selection has been declining rapidly for a while now. My sub runs out in August and I'll be going back to essential. They actually add games to that which are more appealing.

jznrpg1d 14h ago

OtterX1d 14h ago

Nice choice. I agree!

Jeanne D'Arc was my favorite PS+ catalog title from last year & I Platinumed it!

I like Ridge Racer, Tekken and Grandia. Add Xenogears, digimon World 3, Classic GTA and ill be happy

jznrpg1d 10h ago

Jeanne D’Arc was great!

@Eonjay there is a Grandia collection available for PS4, I’m not sure if it’s been on plus already or not

darthv721d 14h ago

cloud streaming to the portal, without using the ps5, is the selling point of premium to me.

Obscure_Observer1d 14h ago

If the consumers are happy, Sony is even happier.

Lightning777d ago

Details are important. Console sales yes. Overall games Xbox seems to be doing fairly well in that department.

LoveSpuds6d ago (Edited 6d ago )

MS were doing so well that they had to start selling their games on their main competitors system which in turn results in around 30% of each sale going to Sony as the platform holder.

I do think tjat MS' fortunes will improve now that they are actually selling games rather than giving them away for pennies on the dollar.

Something that occurs to me is that the more success MS published games have elsewhere, the more stark it will become that selling games is much more profitable than renting them. If that becomes highly noticable, I wonder what the shareholders (who ultimately run the show) will make of a service which has stagnated for years?

crazyCoconuts6d ago

PlayStation doesn't compete with third party games, they compete on consoles. They profit from third party games. If you're not comparing consoles there's no point in comparing.

drivxr7d ago

Console wars are over.

Eventually, everyone else will catch up to this fact.

attilayavuzer7d ago (Edited 7d ago )

I think it's all PS fans have left at this point. Console wars were always a competition for fourth place behind Nintendo, PC and mobile. If Xbox evaporates into a hybrid virtual platform, then PS will be perennially left in last place.

Christopher7d ago

Strange, I recall all those FCC documents and witness testimonies saying the exact opposite... Guess Microsoft doesn't know what it's talking about?

PanicMechanic7d ago (Edited 7d ago )

Great analysis. Just joking.

Pretending like companies give a f about where they “rank” against each other is just super retarded. This isn’t the World Cup.
