Mass Effect Andromeda's writing is not acceptable

Mass Effect Andromeda may get several things right, its writing however is unfortunately not one of them. Oliver Rebbeck at GoombaStomp runs through several of the major problems with the games writing and characterisation.

Drew Karpyshyn was probably the best writer at Bioware. But it will be interesting if Bioware and EA decide to make another Mass Effect game with Mac Walters as the lead writer.

Wakingup2976d ago

Drew is definitely a good writer with a strong voice, something very much lacking in Andromeda.

I'm not arguing that this is the best writing out there, but it hasn't been that bad. We have to remember that the last 2 games had the luxury of not having to introduce anything. I was told by reviewers that there is no backstory for characters but there's a ton, even for random npcs. I was told that characters were boring and uninspired but I love a few of them. And the other games had vanilla characters also. Plus I like the banter, the recognition of the world and events taking place around them, like, "I wish we never came back here again."

Also, I prefer this dialogue system to arbitrary renegade/paragon options. It pulled you from the immersion. You can still choose you character.

All in all it's not perfect, but I love rpgs so i am actually enjoying this game more than any ME since 1.

Can't argue with this. Well said. I was worried for a bit that it was sheer anger but the points are well rounded. Good read.

Hire Halo 4 lead writer! EA/Bioware are beyond stupid. Now bungie hired the same guy to fix their storytelling, LMFAO!

Paytaa2976d ago (Edited 2976d ago )

The Halo 4 writer left in the middle of production for Andromeda.

Plus, Halo 4 had a good story.

Rachel_Alucard2975d ago

>Halo 4 had a good story

I'll take things you can only say ironically for 300 Alex.

Paytaa2975d ago

The story was good. Level design and the Prometheans in general were the main faults of the campaign imo.

Halo 5 on the other hand...

Almost every complaint about the writing was from the beginning of the game where it does seem a little rough but it does improve a lot after that. the comedy might not land at all times but damn if I wasn't laughing out loud on Liam's loyalty mission or some of the ambient conversation between Jaal and the crew on the tempest or out and about in the nomad. My favorite part of the game so far is def kadara it has some of the best written sidequests and characters in the game and can easily hold its own with anything from the og trilogy

Wakingup2976d ago

I've played thirty hours so my complaints definitely don't only apply to the beginning. As I said Liam's loyalty mission is the standout in the game, it's the one spot where I found the comedy felt natural and relaxed. Spot on about Kadara, both Sloane and Reyes stand out as interesting characters and that story arch was great.

"Everything Happening To Bungie Is Because of Greed" -ex-employees

Interesting article, even with some actual names of the people voicing their thoughts.

I think that we've had enough similiar situations at other studios and publishers already, hell even completely different businesses, to know that OF COURSE it's always about hostile environments at work and the search for rather effortless profits than causing excitment with great ideas.

All deflecting statements, wether from managements or other people in charge, have always, literally always been untruthful. Always.

And it's so silly.

Nothing of this crap causes a nuclear war.

But all the people in charge act like everything is top secret f'n CIA like intel, trying everything to not stand up for their mistakes.

I mean it's pathetic, it really is. In the brand scheme of it all it's truly pathetic.

Obscure_Observer7h ago

All of sudden consolidation is now a good thing.

Eonjay7h ago

Right I actually agree with you here. Something doesnt' seem right almost like Sony wants them to look bad because it is trying to takeover. I can't figure out Sony's intentions here but they are already wholely owned so full consolidation means that they can bring in their own management. And honestly this is probably NOT what Bungie wanted.

Obscure_Observer5h ago

"Well the obvious answer to that is that it kinda looks like Bungie is getting torn to shreds without Sony's help. And clearly there is no way Sony is going to spend all that money and not step in to help steady the ship at Bungie because that would be a huge wasted investment."

Exactly!

Phil allowed Pete Hines to run the show at Bethesda and we got Redfall as result. Now that he´s gone and Bethesda reports directly to Matt Booty at XGS, things are definitely getting better!

It´s past time to Sony to take over Bungie and fire that POS Pete Parsons.

-Foxtrot5h ago

Sony has literally given these guys chance after chance, they gave them an extra BILLION to try and keep talent along with telling them to sort their s**t out

What else can they do here? They gave them free reign, extra money and they've spat in their faces.

If they took full control when they bought them they might have been able to salvage them.

TheColbertinator7h ago(Edited 7h ago)

Bungie will be torn to shreds with Sony in full control. Another addition to the cemetery like Zipper or Sony Liverpool

MrBeatdown6h ago

Whatever mental gymnastics you just went through must be exhausting.

It sounds like you have some baggage from Microsoft's acquisition spree.

SimpleDad7h ago

Bungie was indie, so they depended on in game monetization. Sony makes money from other sources: music, movies, psn, ps hardware...

...so devs are hoping by full Sony consolidation they will cut down the monetization part, and make things easier for them...

...but keep in mind, Sony bought them because of their monetization and live service model and design, so much so they tried to make every Sony IP into a live service spinoff.

So I don't see much change in anything, for us consumers, if Sony takes full control.
