Nintendo: We Prioritized Improved Response Over Making Zelda: Breath of the Wild Prettier

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild's Art Director stated that the team prioritized improved response (frame rate) over making the game prettier during development.

This is probably the closest Nintendo will get to acknowledging the graphics downgrade from the original E3 2014 trailer.

Can't believe we are still experiencing graphics downgrade in 2017! Is it so difficult to just show a video of what the actual gameplay looks like before release? Still the looks pretty anyway.

KaiPow2962d ago

It was probably adjusted for parity with the WiiU version. Even though it's an inferior system in terms of hardware, Nintendo isn't the type of company to make gamers on one platform feel worse off than another. Just look at Twilight Princess.

MadeForGaming2962d ago

still doesnt justify the frame drops on the switch version, on the contrary, if it was the Wii U fault, we shouldve expected a flawless transition on the switch

zaherdab2962d ago

@MadeForGaming ... No they kept the frame rate drops on switch to keep the parity with Wii U as well !!!!

Cybermario2962d ago

i am going to go as far as to say it doesn't look prettier because the switch version is a WiiU port, but i can be mistaken

GtR35olution2962d ago

What about the bad frame rate issues?

mikeslemonade2962d ago (Edited 2962d ago )

The draw distance, aliasing, and pop-in are bigger problems than frame rate.

GtR35olution2962d ago

Lemonade man, pop ins, aliasing, stuttering frame rates and bad graphics are all acceptable for a game to get 10s.

xPhearR3dx2962d ago

@Cybermario

Honestly, I didn't think it would look that much better. I got the Wii U version first, and then picked up a Switch last week and Zelda looks A LOT better on the Switch than Wii U. It's more vibrant, crisper and if you have a monitor with game mode, it looks even better. It's one of those games that looks better in person than in screenshots. I went back and looked at it on my Wii U and everything just seemed blurry and dull.

conanlifts2962d ago

My understanding was that the switch version wasn't started until 2016. If so it was ported in less than a year. This would not allow much time to tweak things even if they wanted to.

bouzebbal2961d ago

BOTW resolution and jagged edge is definitely a let down, but looks pretty from a distance i don't notice much of that. but it's a gen leap we are talking about here.
still a good performance for a game of this size

gamer78042961d ago

they rushed the game for the switch is why, it was developed for the wiiu then ported quickly over to the switch. I just got the wiiu version, nearly the same, both with frame dips.

Worse downgrade I've seen this year is Ghost Recon. I have it for X1 and it's almost unbearable to play. It literally looks like a PS3 game to me. It looks slightly better on Pro but it's still a very ugly game on consoles compared to what was shown.

Bathyj2962d ago

I think it looks great on Pro. Not sure what you were expecting. Have you played it on Pro or are you just saying that based on video and reviews?

I guess I didnt really follow this game and then when I loved the beta I got it. So big whoops for me for not have high expectations.

vickers5002962d ago

I played the beta on pro (though I don't know if betas have pro specific features) and while the models looked not that great, the textures and aliasing was very crisp and clear/clean. Very vivid too.

So in that respect, I thought it looked good. No blurriness compared to better looking games that use bluriness to mask games that focus on different aspects of graphical prowess. Not to say that one is better than the other, but it is a refreshing change every now and then.

R00bot2962d ago

We saw videos of how actual gameplay looked before release?

Phunkydiabetic12962d ago

You do realize a shitload of stuff can change over the YEARS a typical game is developed right?

Night992961d ago (Edited 2961d ago )

Dude you realise that graphics downgrade not always happen because developers don't show the actual gameplay? As long as the game is not finished you can always run into problems, some graphical aspects might work in certain areas and you think you are able to maintain it but later on you discover that it doesn't work with other areas. Especially with open world games you always can run into problems later on you were not aware at earlier stages of development. This is why trailers and showcases of games that are still in development always state somewehrer that the current presentation might not represent the full game.

joab7772961d ago

Yeah. I was happy to read this and then thought, it's easy to prioritize one thing when ya really don't have the tech to do the other.

rulparra2961d ago

We experiencing graphics downgrade on every console of this generation no matter if is exclusive or not.

shmowboyfebop2961d ago

Downgrades have been happening for a long time. Games journalists have only recently realized how mant hits they can get with those kinds of articles though. Does anyone else miss Colin Moriarty?

I really love the art style of BoTW. It has stunning looking vistas oozing with atmosphere

EddieNX 2962d ago (Edited 2962d ago )

In a world of boring, grey repetitive games, BOTW stands out like a Picasso. That's not to say something like Horizon doesn't look amazing, but, from an artistic perspective, BOTW stands alone like the Mona Lisa in a comparative point of view.

If you look at games like art, then BOTW beats everything!

Art >>> Tech

nX2962d ago (Edited 2962d ago )

EddieNX

When will you stop trash talking Horizon? What kind of mental issues do you have for downplaying the (clearly) most beautiful open world game yet?

http://nintendoeverything.c...
http://static.giga.de/wp-co...

Any sane person would disagree with you after seeing these screenshots. Zelda may look good at times but in Horizon, every single frame looks like a painting.

EddieNX 2962d ago

Ive not played Horizon yet, but I've played Zelda and I know its a Picasso moment in gaming.

bluefox7552962d ago

@EddieNX Lmao, Picasso? When you say things like that, you shouldn't be surprised when your have 1 upvote and 10 downvotes.

notachance2962d ago (Edited 2962d ago )

@EddieNX I've played and finished both Horizon and Zelda, loved them both, and I can say the graphic on Horizon utterly defeated Zelda, the damn thing near making me cry when looking at it on 50" TV. It's uncanny, the world looks like it came straight out of a painting, very beautiful. In fact, if Horizon came out on PC it will certainly beat The Witcher 3 as the most beautiful game I've ever seen (due to the ultra textures and superior lighting).

Though Zelda really nailed that living world feeling though, I can't put fingers on it but the nature feels... real.

how about that for an unbiased opinion huh?
damn fanboy

-Foxtrot2962d ago

Eddie talks shit to people criticising Zelda BotW even if they don't say anything else, they just criticize the game BUT YET when he speaks about BotW he likes to bring up whatever game he can which is on another platform to play them down so Zelda reigns superior

Hypocrisy...you're the worst one here

light692961d ago

Cybermario2962d ago

is not really a vs ps4 comparison, is how they showed something amazingly looking in E3 and they did a graphics downgrade a la Ubisoft. Yet there is terrible fps drops

Vegamyster2962d ago

Cybermario

There is differences but it's nothing like what Ubisoft does which the games look totally different, the 2014 footage was blurry since it wasn't a direct feed and the first true gameplay at the 2015 Game Awards looked worse than the final product, the game still looks great. *Spoiler alert* a few screenshots: http://imgur.com/a/bHdhd

fenome2962d ago

Yeah, it looks like it really paid off, it's a perfect art style for a Zelda game and everybody seems to love the gameplay. Props to them for really coming through for the fans on this one!

fenome2961d ago

There's a lot of haters and unnecessary comparisons in this thread. I'll be the first to admit that I'm very critical of Nintendo and their hardware choices but I'll also be the first to give credit where it's due to actual development teams. C'mon guys, these are the people that allow us to have these moments.

conanlifts2962d ago (Edited 2962d ago )

I find the graphics weird. At times i think its nothing special and then other times as the sun sets or rises, a lightning storm hits or i see the reflections in the rain i am suddenly wowed.

Pennywise1382962d ago

I kind of agree with that. I was really worried about the art style at first then after I played it I realized how unique it was. This is the most Japanese feeling Zelda yet but it work and still feels very Zelda.

ChristMustDie2962d ago

I'd much rather Nintendo focus on frame rate in the future rather than what the game looks like. Zelda runs at a stable frame rate (for the most part). I'd hate to see how it would run if the game looked better.

Alexious2962d ago

If it was on PC, it could have looked even better than the original trailer while running at constant 60+FPS on high-end hardware.

Maybe one day Nintendo will go multiplatform. Meanwhile, there's Cemu.

Bateekh2962d ago

I'm really tired of PC gamer's same shit rhetoric about how [insert whatever game] would run better on PC at their "1080P 60fps" shit. Seriously, enough of that shit. It doesn't have to be at those settings have a quality game.

bluefox7552962d ago

It would be nice, right? If we could play Nintendo games on hardware that wasn't obsolete?

2962d ago
BrandanT2962d ago

Not everyone could afford a high end gaming PC, and not everyone has the time for that much dedication.

Istolla2962d ago

I wish Sony, Microsoft, and PC developers decided to only make games for the Switch, that way we can take our gave on the go.

In case you still don't get it, the world doesn't revolve around your narrow-minded views of what gaming should be.

The 10th Rider2962d ago

@BrandanT,

I disagree with Alexious and bluefox755, but you do realize you can get a decent gaming PC that will run most games in 1080p 60FPS for around $600? If you're willing to cut a few corners, you could shave off $100-200. A "High-end" gaming PC is really only needed right now if you're playing above 1080p.

mamotte2962d ago

But's not on PC, so cry me a river.

Prince_TFK2962d ago

Yeah but people tend to always forget that CEMU can only emulate the Wii U. Wow...shocking right? You pc elites can dream of emulating new nintendo games from now on, as the Wii U is dead.

Its gonna be years for a Switch emulator to emerge (if possible at all). Even the ps vita has no pc emulator yet, and the thing get pirated to oblivion.

AspiringProGenji2962d ago

Yeah but the game still suffers from massive drops. Just do a jump attack when fighting two tall demons, the game freezes for a second.

Festano2962d ago

Which makes that trailer even more of a lie. If it was Ubisoft or EA we'd be crucifying them, but it's Nintendo which always gets a free pass

R00bot2962d ago

The framerate issues are annoying but don't detract from the experience enough to warrant too much hate. The fact that we are even talking about the framerate right now means that Nintendo isn't getting a free pass.

HollowKnight2961d ago

False advertising, there I said It.

Sirk7x2961d ago (Edited 2961d ago )

I've put 90 hours into the game and can say I have only seen the game freeze like that once. When Witcher 3 first released the frame rate constantly dropped into single digits at places before patching. Still an amazing game regardless. Remember Mass Effect and Dark Souls 1 as well? Still regarded as amazing games.

And you couldnt achieved that on a cel shaded game in 2017 after 4 years making it. Imagine the work if it wasnt cel shaded game to get 30 locked frames.

Neonridr2962d ago

you mean like Andromeda on the PS4 / Pro?

corroios2962d ago (Edited 2962d ago )

Im still waiting for the Switch version and then you can compare a multiplattform game.

but you can read the «amazing» Dragon Quest Heroes 2 where the switch is closer to the vita performance....

Neonridr2962d ago (Edited 2962d ago )

@corrois - still looks like the PS4 version in most regards though. I agree that the performance in that game is all over the place though (Dragon Quest Heroes 2).

I am merely saying that no hardware is free from performance dips. The Switch is considerably weaker than the PS4 / Pro. Yet both of those still exhibit frame drops too.. it happens. Just enjoy the game.

Wallstreet372962d ago (Edited 2962d ago )

No like Horizon on og ps4 which (don't even need to mention pro :))graphically spanks this game or any game into oblivion. And is rock rock solid with a denser world's and more complex enemies all around and the world isn't a walking simulator half the time (and yeah I have switch and Zelda)

You try too hard dude it's not even funny lol might as well mention dark souls too that performs Ass all around.

Andromeda isn't even first party lol SMH but I see u had to go bottom of barrel to push your weak narrative :)

Neonridr2962d ago

@Wallstreet37 - I only mentioned Andromeda because it was brand new. Last Guardian ran like shit on the PS4 / Pro and that was a PS3 game.. better?

remixx1162962d ago

@neo

Why did you tell wallstreet to give you a break then bring up the last guardian?

He was right, if they had tried to push realistic graphics then the game definitely wouldn't have been what it is now.

I'm fact your both right. It is an art style choice but it was one they chose that also benefitted their vision for the game and limitations of the hardware.

The last guardian surely wasn't limited by the ps4, that games issues came else where while still being pretty and fun.

Wallstreet372962d ago

Nintendo relys heavily on that aesthetic due to its under powered hardware. More realistic graphics wouldn't even happen with Zelda on switch. Remember that more realistic Zelda tech demo years ago? There's a reason it didn't make it into a game.

Neonridr2962d ago

it's called an art style. I bet you were all over The Last Guardian though right? Give me a break.

Wallstreet372962d ago (Edited 2962d ago )

I see reading comprehension and rational evades you. Who cares if it's called art style lol we all know it's art style genius, it still doesn't change the fact that Nintendo relies heavily (disproportionate amount of games) on cute "art style" with most of their games because of their hardwareeeeee deficiencies. That "art style" allows them to do things in the game or have the game period on their system as opposed to a more realistic and hardware taxing game

Let me guess? You still believe Nintendo does this with like 90% of their games because it resonates with the younger crowd and demographics their aiming for lol sureeeee. SMH some of you guys man.

Neonridr2962d ago

@Wallstreet - I do not discount that the choice in graphics help with being able to push more as the system definitely has its own weaknesses. But that hardly means that a game is less fun. Gravity Rush was a fantastic game, yet hardly a taxing one.

The Order 1886 was a gorgeous game, yet how did all that turn out? Means jack crap if the game is garbage.

Good for the PS4 for being able to push more, if it couldn't we would all laugh at it. I own a Pro, so I know what the system can do connected to my LG OLED 4K. I haven't played my copy of Horizon yet (still playing Zelda at the moment) but I know it will look gorgeous on that TV with HDR.

Wallstreet372962d ago (Edited 2962d ago )

Fair enough (even though I happened to like The Order minus crap boss battles). And that's all some of us are trying to say (that the hardware is holding games back).

Again I have a switch feel free to pm and I'll add you.

Imalwaysright2962d ago

Nintendo never went for realistic graphics in most of their games. This is true now that their consoles are weaker and was true when the N64 and GC were more powerful than the PS1 and PS2.

yeahokwhatever2962d ago

What about Little Big Planet? The graphics are really good, but its got a cute style. Why cant Nintendo do both too? Ratchet and Clank can on the PS4. Why can't Zelda look cute AND modern?

rainslacker2962d ago

Cell shaded isn't inherently easier on the rendering engine or GPU. Cell shaded is just an effect of the textures used, which take up the same space and rendering time regardless of how they look. Rendering time is more affected by object size(number of vertices), effects, and lighting used. There is no reason why many of these things need to be downgraded for cell shaded, although these things aren't as robust on the Switch. On the other hand, Cell shading also requires different filters to process the look, so in some cases it's actually a wash.

Epic's Tim Sweeney shares first details about Unreal Engine 6

Vits1d 12h ago

It’s going to come packed with a bunch of flashy, buzzword-filled features that no one will actually be able to use without tanking performance. And just like every iteration of that engine before it, the excuse won’t be that it’s poorly optimized, no, it’s "forward-thinking" and the hardware just isn’t ready to keep up.

But since it saves studios from having to invest in developing their own internal engines, it’ll still end up being widely adopted across the industry.

VenomUK16h ago

But will it have micro-stutters?

Vits13h ago

But of course, even compatible with VRR, so you can really feel it.

rlow112h ago

What cracks me up, is a lot of games utilize Unreal 5 and yet gaming has become more expensive. So all that BS that they shoveled out the last big reveal hasn’t translated into savings and if it has, then the industry is just plain ol’ lying.

1nsomniac6h ago(Edited 6h ago)

You mean like “going digital will bring down costs for customer dramatically. Because there will be no packaging/distribution.” Or maybe the “games going forward, will be cross-buy so you buy it once and will be able to access it across all platforms you own.” Or even the “if we increase the rrp it will mean we can get rid of micro transactions altogether.”

… I could be here all day quoting the lies from this industry.

abstractel1h ago

Scope of games are way bigger than even just 10 years ago. Also keep in mind that Epic charges 5% for using their engine, Steam charges 30% just like Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft's stores. That's 35% of your revenue gone. Steam infuriates me because they don't have nearly the overhead console manufacturers have but they know people are unlikely to migrate to Epic Games Store (which charges 15% instead but has a shit storefront compared to steam). I love UE5 (for the most part) and it has pushed the envelope in ways that would be too long to list here. I think UE6 will push things further and make it possible for devs who don't have Rockstar resources to make amazing games even further. Time will tell.

Profchaos15h ago

Will it have games or just more decade long projects

IanTH14h ago(Edited 14h ago)

I find this odd. How am I expected to be excited with future promises when mired by the current legacy of UE5 and its myriad of technical shortcomings that have yet to be solved, even years after release.

Of course they should be working towards the future, but talking about it while UE5 still has many unsolved issues years after it has been the de facto standard? An engine used by so many, after so many years, with the backing of a company as grossly cash-rich as Epic shouldn't have so many problems still.

And the optics - even if not the truth of the matter - is you're putting time & resources into UE6 at the expense of UE5; your current product still needs quite a lot of attention. Unless the message is "we're abandoning UE5 because it's issues are systemic, and we hope UE6 can address that mess by moving on as quickly as possible".

IanTH13h ago

I was attempting to reframe my comment as I watched more of the video, but the edit timed out. So here is a nearly completely different comment lol:

The number forks/fragmentations of UE5 feels like - from a laymen's perspective - a plausible explanation for why the engine, 3 years post release, has continued to have the same problems today as it did from day 1. Sounding as if they can't really find a way to cleanly coalesce each of the seven disparate variants, it seems hopes lie with being able to do so in the years leading up to the launch of UE6.

That said, if they have so many specific versions, then it does still kind of boggle the mind why issues, like compilation stutter, are still so pervasive. Seems in this specific scenario, the fragmentation could potentially be useful for at least helping to narrow down platform specific issues/solutions.

Clearly not the case, so hopefully they can make UE6 more unified to allow for more focused, streamline engine development.

PixelOmen11h ago

Compilation stutter hasn't really been much of an issue for a couple years now if the devs know what they're doing. The problem is not all the devs know what they're doing in that regard. The real problem is traversal stutter. That is nearly universal.

IanTH10h ago(Edited 10h ago)

I sort of ended up mentally putting both of those under the category of compilation stutter, which is surely too reductive. I should have just said "stuttering/fametime issues in all their incarnations". Because while there are improvements to comp stutter, even games that force you through long, even 30 minutes shader compilation stages before playing haven't managed to fully solve that issue. Heck, even consoles, with fixed hardware that can ship with pre-compiled shaders can't even seem to fully escape it.

Traversal stutter is definitely its own issue, though, and has only been exacerbated thanks to older cards being held onto longer, and companies - primarily Nvidia - opting to put 8GB VRAM buffers into cards for way the eff too long. If you don't have the top of the line CPU and high-end, overclocked RAM kits - most of the PC playing population - to help shuffle that info between system memory and the GPU, you're more screwed than most. And Nvidia could help the issue as well, if they could improve their years-long issue with high driver overhead. Freeing up any extra CPU usage, especially for those with weaker CPUs, would really benefit.

I really hope these things can have some kind of solution found for them sooner than later. As it is, it just feels like games are taking two steps forwards and two steps back a lot of the time. Improved pixel quality (world detail, lighting, etc), at the expense of degraded image clarity (softer image, heavy reliance on upscaling, increased artificing) and smoothness/performance (stuttering/poor frametimes).

And the fact this stuff occurs, when dev times are longer than they've ever been, with budgets creeping ever higher, it's that much worse to feel like a lot of experiences just aren't wins across the board. Especially as deep into this generation as we are, and with as much time as devs & engine makers have had to iron out issues. It feels like we may need to pump the brakes on the pace of research into graphics tech and rebalance towards optimization. Image clarity (native res, especially) continuing to fall further, with poor frametimes for a myriad of reasons, as the generation goes on doesn't feel the best.

PixelOmen9h ago

I'm not just talking about shader compilation stages. There are games like Expedition 33 that barely have any pre-compilation stages (in the background on the main menu) and have almost zero comp stutter. It has to do with the way you use shaders and make your materials. It still has some small traversal stutter though.

Noskypeno12h ago

It feels too soon to talk about UE6. It feels like UE5 barely got tapped, only a handfull of games really showed its potential.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33: How the 'Game of the Year' was made

The makers of a video game that even impressed the French president tell the unusual tale of its development.

In my opinion some of these games might be part of the GOTY nominees.

Blue Prince
Doom- dark ages
ER- Nightreign
Midnight Walk
MK World
MGS Snake eater
Ghost of Yotei
HK- Silksong
Hades 2

I am sure there are others that might surprise us down the road but these are the ones I can think of from top of my head that could challenge Clair Obscur- E33 for GOTY.

Si-Fly2d ago

If the option was a physical cartridge or a game key card then that would be the best possible situation. However it’s looking increasingly like game key cards will totally phase out physical media and that is really disappointing. I have a huge physical Switch libary and was looking forward to doing the same for the Switch 2.

SPEAKxTHExTRUTH2d ago

How so? Do you think devs have any say on how a game is distributed?

Neonridr2d ago

yes.. they could pay full price to put their games on a cartridge, or pay less and provide a digital code and save money.

Which do you think devs would opt for?

CrimsonWing692d ago

It wasn’t about distribution… 🤦‍♂️

The irony being him criticizing what creates of the loss of making gaming feel “special.” You know, annual releases with a paint-by-number blue print, monetization, and in general just Ubisoft practices for the last decade.

Sorry that one went over your head.

Then maybe you should do a better job of making your point instead of readers assuming what you’re trying to say.

Yet most games these days on Blu-ray's don’t even contain the full game or the game at all. But he wasn’t complaining when he was at Ubisoft tho.

Christopher2d ago

Kind of normal to not want to get fired for public complaints about your company, though.

Duke192d ago

Buying a physical box, just to open it for a glorified QR code is a shitty practice but I can absolutely see it becoming the norm sadly.

The enjoyment of owning something physically is going away, now its just a paid trial of services you never really "own".

Neonridr2d ago

except this is still a physical cartridge that you have to put in your console. You just have to download the entire game. But instead of it just being a code in a box (which is a one time use), you could still sell this or lend it to your friend.

It's not great no, but it's nothing like what we had with some Switch games.

Duke192d ago

Fair, its better than a one time use code but it I agree with the point in the article. It still takes away from the overall experience (especially from a nostalgia perspective).

Neonridr2d ago

@Duke19 - I mean we have digital edition only consoles now from MS and Sony. That's ok?

Seems like this is just a physical vs digital conversation, you can't exactly single out Nintendo here as everyone seems to be doing it.
