Being the mathematician that I got my degree in, wouldn't the comparative analysis of time frames actually put Infamous: Second Son ahead of BOTW? it's 9 days compared to 14. Mario Kart would also be ahead of Horizon by the same principal. Maybe some others too....but don't really wish to do that much math this late.

Anyhow, not that big of a deal, great sales for all of them, just thought I'd think that the article should try to be accurate, or use similar metrics for comparisons.

Pokemon 7.2 million in the week. Hehehe!! Game still has a huge following. I've never even played a Pokemon game and probably never will. Mario Kart is king in racing game sales. Nintendo has some of the strongest selling franchises in the business.

Hhhm.. I don't think so. GT has never ever sold 35 million copies of one game on one platform before. Mario Kart has. GT is far from a perfect sim. No damage in most of the games. Cars never flip over and bounce around off each other like bumping cars. Wouldn't call that realistic simulation of cars racing. Maybe they will get it right this gen.

At least I have multiple consoles and can play anygame I really wanna play. Ignoring Kirb, Halo 5 should definitely be on this list. The $400 million is a completely stupid waste of a number, because MS has never revealed what was all included in that $400 such as console bundles, DLC, etc... THey just gave gross Halo sales.

That being said Halo easily sold over 1m copies it's first week, it has consistently done 2m - 4m week 1 sales at launch, and Halo 5 is likely no difference, at it's worse it should have sold 1m copies week one, and therefore should have made this list.

Now the reason MS didn't want to release actually numbers, is likely because even though it launched well, it more than likely sold less than the Xbox 360 Halos, which would be a bad look for what's supposed to be their "fastest selling console" and their "best selling franchise".

If every Halo 5 game sold was bundled with a console they would have sold 1million consoles in that week. The switch is a severely underpowered 9th gen console. Technically, PS4P and Scorpio could be a new generation, but since the companies aren't defining them anymore, why are you trying to? All you're saying is that Nintendo while always early to the party, is always way behind in the hardware.

That said, who cares? Those are good sales for the game. be happy with it, and stop trying to make it into more than it is for the sake of giving Nintendo a way to win something so trivial. Switch will be considered as part of this gen, because Nintendo is competing in this gen, not the next gen, and by the time the next gen finally does roll around, Nintendo will probably be launching their next console, because the Switch isn't likely to be that successful after the initial launch period is over.

People disagree, but Mario is typical MUCH better selling than Zelda. Super Mario 3D World was an anomaly in the series and Odyssey's sales should be similar to Super Mario Galaxy, in which case it should easily make the top 3. At 14 days Galaxy was at about 350,000,000.

Super Mario 3D World was not an anomaly. It sold 5.47 million copies to date, according to Nintendo themselves, being the third best-selling Wii U game, behind Mario Kart 8 and New Super Mario Bros U (2D Marios sell better than 3D Marios).

Oh, I'm not saying it didn't sell well. I just don't think it quite captured the magic of 64/Sunshine/Galaxy. It was a great game, but it was different from the typical 3D Mario game. They both launched at comparable times, one year after the release of the console they were on, but Super Mario Galaxy sold over twice as much in its first 8 weeks. There was a lot of buzz around Super Mario Galaxy when it was released and it was actually the reason I'd picked up a Wii. In contrast, I picked up Super Mario 3D World because I already had a Wii U. When I played it with friends they enjoyed the multiplayer, but it wasn't the type of thing they had a burning sensation to play on their own. Super Mario Odyssey already garnered a TON of attention when it was announced. If they keep up the momentum it's highly likely it'll be a game people pick up the console to play, like Galaxy was.

Conclusion: Sam eats faster than john.

Yeah you can. Sam eats an apple every 3 minutes and John does every 2 minutes so he's eating at a rate 50% quicker than Sam. Don't even need a calculator to figure that out.

No you can't. What you figured out was the average amount of time it took Sam to eat each of his apples verses the average amount of time it took John to eat each of his apples.

What if Sam ate 5 apples in 9 minutes and then it took another 51 to finish the other 15 apples? In that case Sam was the faster eater. However the data given doesn't tell us how long it took Sam to eat the first 5 apples, only how long it took him to eat a total of 20 apples.

Similarly, if a game sold 5 million in two weeks and another sold 4 million in one week the data doesn't give us enough info to tell us what game sold faster. Maybe the one that sold 4 million in one week only sold another 800,000 copies over the next week, or maybe the one that sold 5 million sold 4 million in the first six days.

Think of Sales/Time as a fraction. You can't compare the data until the denominator is the same. Unfortunately we don't have 100% accurate first week sales for every game . . . Or for first three days, four days, two weeks, month, etc . . . There's some games on the list that we can clearly tell sold faster than others, but in other places the data is so similar and the time period is different and therefore the ranking to the list, in those situations, is meaningless.

Just have to divide the average copies sold per day based on the numbers provided, and you get the way the list would be more appropriate for this kind of comparison.

While it's mostly trivial, it's how comparisons like this are done. From the numbers determined per day, you can then extrapolate how much they each would have sold in the same time frame.

Obviously it's not a completely accurate way to judge, because of how games tend to sell the most in the first couple weeks, but it's still more appropriate.

It'd be horribly inaccurate way to figure things out. A game with sales numbers for the first four days would be way higher than a game that had sales figures for the first two weeks. First week sales numbers are often 75% higher than second week numbers.

I hope you never have to work with data. Time and sales have have a positive relationship: As time increases so do sales. Therefore a list based off of pure sales numbers will be biased towards games that have sales data spanning a larger period of time. However, time and average sales have an inverse relationship. As time increases the average number of sales per day decreases. Therefore a list that averages out the data, as you suggest, will be biased towards games that give us numbers for a shorter period of time. Both methods are flawed and produce inaccurate results. Without data for an equal period of time for all games, the ranking is meaningless.

Love it that new IPs such as Bloodborne, Nioh and horizon-zero-dawn get so much respect and attention from gamers all over the world. Especially when they deserve it. All of those 3 games are masterpieces. Been playing video games since the 80s. About 30 years. But this generation has been my favorite one so far. So many new games has entered my top 10 list of all time. And 2 of them entered within in a month. Nioh and horizon-zero-dawn. This year has been crazy. And it's only gone 3 months of this year.
Bloodborne is my nr 1 game of all time as well. 3 classics has been made already this generation.
I remember when the Xbox fans screamed that the ps4 has no games hahahhahaha
This generation feels like the ps2 generation ones again. When the system had TO MANY games to play, and you can't play them all because of you don't have the time to play them.
