The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Is Secretly an Incredible Multiplayer Game - IGN

Somehow, a single-player game has quickly become one of the best multiplayer experiences I've ever had.

zivtheawesome2975d ago

so... talking to other people about an SP game is now MP and nintendo innovating? every game does that not just zelda...

joab7772975d ago

Yep. Though I do this with every game. It's called using social apps. Dark Souls is one of the best though If you buy and play at launch. But I would not mistake it with actual multiplayer.

theKiller2975d ago (Edited 2975d ago )

IGN is shamelessly trying to justify the perfect score they gave Zelda, even though for the same issue Zelda had, other games didn't get a free pass. Zelda is probably the best Zelda game, but it doesn't mean it's perfect if it has minor issues. 9.5/10 would probably have been a more realistic score, according to IGN standards, as they are very critical of any issues with games.

I think, for every major game it should be reviewed by 3 different reviewers from the same company, and take the average of the 3. small and average games doesn't need more than 1 reviewer, as it will require a huge amount of staff to review every game by 3 persons.

cartoonx12975d ago

10/10 doesnt mean if a game is flawless, by that logic no game can get 10. uncharted 4 had many issues yet it got 10.

Bimkoblerutso2974d ago (Edited 2974d ago )

@cartoonx1
I understand what you mean, and I agree, but Zelda has been getting almost unanimously perfect scores with flaws and mechanics that historically games have been getting docked for since...like....ever.

And to be perfectly frank, even if it didn't have any glaring flaws, at the end of the day it's still basically just been turned into another fairly cookie-cutter open world game.

But for whatever reason....nerp...we get this weird circle jerk of a critical reception, complete with retarded little fluff pieces like this, the likes of which other games rarely receive.

Bimkoblerutso,

http://www.metacritic.com/g...

That's an abridged list of games that can easily be scrutinized in a similar way. The first two have problems. Like, a lot of problems. Number three is a personal gripe where I don't see the appeal at all. It's more or less a typical FPS.

Clearly, games contain mechanical, technical, and narrative issues...yet they're still highly appreciated. Maybe because, at the end of the day, they're just phenomenally intriguing. Whether it's the gameplay or story, it's worth the investment. I cannot speak for the reviewers, but it seems to me that many enjoyed the game damn near unanimously. Heck, Gamespot, a site that people here suggest is the gold standard due to their strict critiquing, gave it a 10 (exceptional). And now, people question that credibility.

People need to be reasonable. If reviews show incompatibility with your personal assessment, it's perfectly fine to disagree. But when most haven't played it or call its gameplay dated (yet here we are, buying up remasters and fawning over a Crash remake and unchanged sequels when Breath of the Wild really shakes up the Zelda formula), that's a problem.

People can like, people can dislike. It's the inconsistency that's troublesome.

Bimkoblerutso2973d ago

Citing examples of journalistic hypocrisy doesn't stand to do anything but strengthen my case (though I'd address why those examples are pretty terrible anyway if it didn't mean going off on a tangent).

I don't know who's calling it "dated," per se, but Breath of the Wild literally "shook up" it's formula by becoming an open-world game. That's...pretty much it. And all I'm saying is that even if it didn't have a wealth of annoying design issues, it would still not even be the best example of it's genre, much less deserving of being the highest rated game EVER. It's just a pretty good open-world game in a generational sea of open world games.

I absolutely love everything about LoZ:botw but it does not qualify as a multiplayer game.

uth112975d ago

So No Man's Sky is really multiplayer too then. Sean wasn't lying

bf0007779662975d ago (Edited 2975d ago )

IGN: BotW may be secretly the most visually advanced game with secretly 4k resolution and 60 fps and an absolutely stable frame rate(secretly).

nX2974d ago

Just like IGN has (secretly) become an accumulation of low quality hipster gaming journalists over the past 24 months.

rainslacker2974d ago

I love it when games act all coy.

Blu3_Berry2975d ago

It's a single player game. Terrible IGN article.

thekhurg2975d ago

It's just more championing for a game that was shamefully over scored by most media outlets.

RpgSama2974d ago (Edited 2974d ago )

"a single-player game has quickly become one of the best multiplayer experiences I’ve ever had, and I think I’ll remember the constant elation I’ve felt this month for the rest of my life."

I mean, c'mon, are we being serious, they are going there, she'll remember the feeling of elation while playing Zelda Breath of the Wild for the rest of her life?, this is getting out of hand now.

Elation: Great happiness and exhilaration.
synonyms: euphoria, ecstasy, delight, jubilation, exultation, bliss, rapture

badz1492974d ago

Even the PS4 with share play that literally lets your friend on another PS4 take over control from you in every single game is not claiming to be MP but BoTW is? Because you talk about it with friends? There goes all their little left credibility down the drain!

yomfweeee2975d ago

Sorry, but Horizon Zero Dawn is my MP game of the year.....

Jesus what did I just read???

psplova2975d ago (Edited 2975d ago )

You mean that secretly of course..

freshslicepizza2975d ago

Right on, another promo for Horizon.

This is just silly, is this supposed to gloss over Nintendo's online services?

UCForce2975d ago

Yeah, I mean really, IGN ?

DreadGara2974d ago (Edited 2974d ago )

All the games are multiplayer and all of them should get 10. Specially those who pay us in advance, secretly.

KwietStorm_BLM2975d ago

Nah it's just IGN and it's still Zelda circle jerk month.

KwietStorm_BLM2975d ago

I don't even know what that means Veneno

IanTH2974d ago

Methinks Veneno is saying you are butthurt over Zelda's scores.

Also yea, this is a pretty silly article. Just about every game can be a secret multiplayer game with things like MiiVerse and PS4 communities. Kinda bizarre way to just try and say it's a game people like sharing their information and experiences about.

Silly Mammo2974d ago (Edited 2974d ago )

Is the circle jerk part of the multiplayer experience that IGN is talking about?

It's just means that the big N is sending more money bags IGN's way so they could pamper the game to more over the top level like this even if it makes them look stupid! Who cares about credibility if the money keeps coming, right? They don't even know how to distinguish SP from MP games anymore...RIP IGN

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is the anti-Breath of the Wild

Polygon: "To get back to the way Ocarina made us feel, it was necessary to reject almost everything about it."

LG_Fox_Brazil504d ago

Ocarina of Time changed my life forever, such a masterpiece

Zeldafan64503d ago

Hard to believe it's 25 years old already.

Cacabunga503d ago

The feeling this game gave me the first time i had my hands on it is indescribable.. i still get the chill from that day..
botw is like a spin off of the series.. it’s fun but with many flaws and the most important which is Zelda formula isn’t there..

FinalFantasyFanatic502d ago

I can't even remember how many times I played through OoT, I finished that game, and collected everything so many times.

Vits503d ago

I generally agree with the author here. However, if I had to point out a single game as the 'anti-Breath of the Wild,' that would be Majora's Mask. Pretty much everything in that game is interconnected, relies on something that the player must have done previously, is timed, and can be considered a puzzle in itself.

gold_drake503d ago

but still considered the best of the seties.

i would have liked botw to be more like ocarina.

franwex503d ago (Edited 503d ago )

25 years from today whatever Zelda is out people would too be looking fondly at Breath of the Wild.

Ah the more simple times of the 2020s.

babadivad503d ago (Edited 503d ago )

It isn't...
