Is God of War a swipe of 2002 screenplay?

Rob Beschizza of BoingBoing writes:

"The legal issue will be decided by deep pockets and, conceivably, a jury. The moral issue is simpler to determine. Is there anything truly original in Bissoon-Dath's take on an otherwise well-trodden Olympic scenario, or are both properties derivative of other sources? Is it all just so much Clash of the Titans with glowy swords?"

leave kratos alone!!!! leave him aloooone!!!!!

sinncross5686d ago

there's one thing i dont get about this..

why would sony pictures give material to sony playstation... the different subsidiaries of Sony don't work with one another like they're part of a family..

maybe i didnt read something correctly about this...

What I don't get, is that people think stories or games using mythology or history are original these days. That or the fact that the guy waited till the 3rd game is a short time away from coming out to actually claim Sony stole his idea. And some of the grounds for his complaint:
• A champion saves Athens from destruction by an invading Spartan army sent by Ares.

• The earthly conflict is mirrored on Mount Olympus as conflict between the gods.

• The champion is chosen by Zeus and Athena to embark on a quest distinguished by relentless hand-to-hand combat.

... dear god, those sound like such original ideas. And the hand to hand combat part, they were known for using spears and small swords, and "employed the phalanx in the classical style in a single line"...

Straight from the U.S. Copyright Office:

"Copyright, a form of intellectual property law, protects original works of authorship including literary, dramatic, musical, and artistic works, such as poetry, novels, movies, songs, computer software, and architecture. Copyright does not protect facts, ideas, systems, or methods of operation, although it may protect the way these things are expressed. See Circular 1, Copyright Basics, section."

Greek mythology is in the public domain and Sony was well within their right to create God of War using that mythology. If I were Mr. Bissoon-Dath I would be concerned with LucasArts suing me for using the term "lightsaber" in my text.

derek5686d ago

Wonder how long they have been building this suit. They only filed for copyright in 2006,probably after some planning with their lawyers. My bet is that they hope Sony will settle with them, I hope they dont get a dime.

AssassinHD5686d ago

He registered his copyright within his 5 year window so it would be considered prima facie evidence in court. This will not help him though because in his copyrighted work he wrote that Zeus has glowing "lightsabers" coming out of his hands. Kratos is the one with "glowing weapons" that are not coming out of his hands so much as they are connected to him by chains. That is enough of a difference to distinguish God of War from the copyrighted work. You cannot copyright an idea after all.

butbutbut he had Zeus in it and so did GOW1 and 2! Sony must payyyyyy!!! /sarcasm

Sad day, hopefully they’ll allow a third party server solution. Goes to show game preservation is an uphill battle.

Fieyy4h ago

First the Helldivers launch and then this

Sony still can’t run online services/games.

-Foxtrot4h ago

Do you not get tired creating duplicate accounts...

It's super sad at this point

Knightofelemia1h ago

Last time I remember Helldivers is doing great with players both PC and Playstation.

Fieyy1h ago

And how was it at launch? A disaster for weeks.

Ranking the Devil May Cry Series

VGChartz's Mark Nielsen: "Upon finally finishing Devil May Cry 5 recently - after it spent several years on my “I’ll play that soon” list - I considered giving it a fittingly-named Late Look article. However, considering that this was indeed the final piece I was missing in the DMC puzzle, I decided to instead take this opportunity to take a look back at the entirety of this genre-defining series and rank the entries. What also made this a particularly tempting notion was that while most high-profile series have developed fairly evenly over time, with a few bumps on the road, the history of Devil May Cry has, at least in my eyes, been an absolute roller coaster, with everything from total disasters to action game gold."

First to last for me...3,4,5,1,2.

VersusDMC5h ago

Me leaving it out should be telling of my thoughts on it. Better than 2 as a DMC game.

Still a good game though.

Friendlygamer6h ago

3,1,4,5 to me, never played 2. 5 gameplay is amazing but level design was really disappointing to me, just a bunch of plain arenas, the story felt like a worse written rehash of the 3rd and the charater models looked weird ( specially the ladies ). Another problem with 5 was that there was not enough content for 3 charaters so I could never really familiarize with any of them

2.
Dmc.
4.
5.
1.
3.

God DMC2 was an awful game.
And in case this isn't obvious it goes worst to best

Yui_Suzumiya4h ago

1 and DmC. The rest are unimportant.

DarXyde4h ago

Order changes depending on your focus. I tend to focus on gameplay/fun factor, so...

5, 3, 1, 4, 2.

I really didn't like 4 but commend Dante's weapon diversity. The retreading of old ground was pretty unacceptable to me.

But even then... Still more enjoyable than 2 for me

Golden Axe is a great game I enjoyed it on the SMS, Genesis and in the arcade. Great game but it truly was a quarter eater back in the day. I wish Sega could get the rights to the arcade port of Moonwalker another great arcade game I enjoyed. Collect so many monkeys and become Robo Michael lol.
