Here's a tip from my playthrough of the game so far, which I think will help you survive a bit longer, even though it is really an obvious known for shooters like this:
Be very conscious of your surroundings. If you ever get into a firefight , trust me you will at times when you're trying to stealth some of the more heavily fortified bases of Unidad and the cartels, having situational awareness is going to help you in terms of survivability and maneuverability. True, the enemy AI is dumb, but they still have their moments of psychic soldiery, where even though YOU can't see the enemy to shoot at them, the enemy can still "see" you. Concealment doesn't exist in this game once you start getting into firefights. It works for stealth obviously, but not so much when you're in close proximity to enemies who are searching for you, you have to put a lot more ground between your character and the enemy to break contact with them to avoid the easy shots they get on you.
So, if you're out in the middle of a field like the grass or cliff-side, make sure you're cover is actually covering you, the entirety of your character. You'll get into some moments where you're prone in a small ditch or behind a small stone wall, but enemies can still shoot and kill you with whatever limb is exposed. Also make sure, if you're in those types of areas, that you can fall back to areas that have more cover, either this is somewhere with more rock faces, forests, gaining higher ground, etc. For more close quarters places, find a place you can funnel enemies into kill zones, and make sure you have some exits to get out, obviously like building or base entrances, but even obstacles you can climb over to get in and out of those places, that way you can escape a base and run and hide to open ground to avoid pursuing enemies. So, recon the area, try and take out alarms to stop some reinforcements, tag enemies, kill them however you can stealthily with sync shot, shooting during specific enemy patrol routes, etc. and then once you've taken care of a good amount of the enemies in an area, you won't have to worry too much about firefights killing you. Essentially, just recon a perceived difficult area before getting into it.
I know this is an obvious tip, but Wildlands' shoot and cover mechanics are a bit clunkier to other shooters, and it's not as tactical compared to it's predecessors and other more tactical shooters because of the more open environments where enemies can essentially come from any direction and they have air support, but you just gotta work with what you have with this game.
