A split from Couch Co-op: Why the gaming industry has lost its love for split-screen - Twisted Bard

When gaming moved from the Arcade to the Living Room they still maintained their social aspect through split-screen cooperative gaming. As the Internet became a more prevalent part of daily life and indeed a necessity to expand the gaming experience, it allowed gamers across the globe to connect and battle it out or coexist to create some truly awe inspiring gaming moments.

There are still plenty of modern games that feature local multiplayer

ajroberts3021d ago

But what I was saying during the article is that many have moved away from that aspect. The games wth local multiplayer don't have the same quality they used to. Many single player screens are so packed with information that it reduced the quality of the screens in multiplayer.

agent45323020d ago

Not on a 60in screen maybe on a 27in or 30in. I remember offline multiplayer on 27in tvs and yes the issue you mention was present.

FallenAngel19843021d ago

I don't believe the quality has gone down as you can still find plenty of great local multiplayer titles, they just aren't as prominent as they once were

Erik73573021d ago (Edited 3021d ago )

Not as much though and not in flagship titles on ps4/xbox one.

I think now that co op couch gaming is a thing straight out of the box of Nintendo Switch, meaning every consumer has two controllers unlike the userbase of xbox one and ps4 which maybe half have more than 1 controller.

IT defiantly encourages developers to put time in co op mode because they know pretty much every single gamer will have the ability to use it who has the Switch.

I think its genius of Nintendo to include that and people will be talking about more later this year.

ajroberts3021d ago

Nintendo has always been good at keeping the Couch Co-op alive in all their systems. Just look at Mario Party!

TheCommentator3020d ago

AJ, that's because Nintendo doesn't understand online.

Tetsujin3022d ago

I still prefer couch co op over online. I understand the majority "need" their online, I still prefer having people physically around to better coordinate. The only time I don't like local multiplayer is PvP based games for the fact of cheating through looking at controllers or the screen.

SeanScythe3022d ago

STOP LOOKING AT MY SCREEN!!!
It's the same screen?!
Stop looking at my side! You're cheating!
No you just suck and looking for excuses.
aaaahhhhh childhood memories....

ajroberts3021d ago

It's how you learned not to trust anyone.

SeanScythe3021d ago

It's what the Smoker guy from "The X-Files" was talking about all along. "Trust No One"

agent45323020d ago

Your comment makes me feel old.

RosweeSon3020d ago

Times have changed I loved split screen goldeneye amongst many many others however in the day and age were in it's too much hassle to meet up or get round same console these days when people are paying for their own have online and can do it from comfort of their own house. Little sad but hey ho backlogs to big for social gaming 😢😉

ajroberts3020d ago

Online is a great addition and in many cases will always outdo Couch Co-op, for one you get the whole screen to yourself. But game nights just can't be beaten

RosweeSon3020d ago

For sure it's always a great laugh with a few like minded gamers/friends slugging it out on something, Mario Kart back in the day or goldeneye, bomberman with SNES multitap. Perfect dark was also pretty cool as they had those rockets you could control fly round the levels and get a Rocket cam as well so see where your flying it.

agent45323020d ago

Gamenights eating Doritos with coke (soda not the drug ok), talking smack to your buddy next to you. The rush and thrill of finally beating your buddy for kicking your ass in the game for the past hour. Those 🌙 are always especial to me. Online gaming is good but if no online player speaks just texts it makes the online experience lame. If VR becomes like Sword Art online man that would improve online gaming by seeing an online avatar of the person you play online against.

EmperorDalek3020d ago

The couch co-op in Overcooked is awesome. If AAA games stop caring about it, I hope more download only games continue it.

Sony just needs to up its resolution and framerate and it'll be quite the service, still don't like streaming though so doesn't really matter to me.

SpaceRanger1951d ago

Why is Xbox GamePass on this? Not a streaming service.

CaptainCook1951d ago

Xcloud will be included with Xbox Game Pass this year

RazzerRedux1951d ago

And they announced that.....when?

CaptainCook1951d ago (Edited 1951d ago )

@RazzerRedus
Here's the link from the engineers themselves talking about Xcloud at Xbox London Event 2019.

"There's 2 things.. We are going to give you the games you own from the cloud or the games you've purchased in the future, and we will bring Game streaming to Xbox Game Pass so you are Free to discover and play anywhere and everywhere"

SpaceRanger1951d ago

Once again, why is Xbox GamePass on this? Your comment only further proves my point.

RazzerRedux1951d ago

@CaptainCook

Thanks. I missed that announcement obviously.

Neither is Uplay or Origin. "Journalism"

2pacalypsenow1951d ago (Edited 1951d ago )

The only game streaming services are PS Now, Stadia and GeForce Now.

Xbox Game pass, Uplay plus and Origin aren’t streaming.

badz1491953d ago

Father__Merrin1954d ago

these cretins are all over ebay you search for a game key and something cheap comes up once you click on the post its actually not a game key but rather access to a account. theres no option on ebay to report them

arkard1954d ago (Edited 1954d ago )

Should be, what does not participate in digital sales (unless something changed im unaware of) so a sale like that is against there terms and conditions

I was wrong, they do allow digital items now.
https://www.ebay.com/help/p...

But I checked and there is still a reporting tool on the mobile website at least. You have to scroll pretty far down to get to it though

nucky641954d ago

not sure about that. i used to sell digital codes from blu ray movies i bought. i never used them so it seemed like a waste. i usually put them up for sale for a third of what the entire movie package cost me. the last time i tried to do this (around 2 months ago) i get message that trying to sell digital copies isn't allowed.

nucky641954d ago

so true. i was always curious as to how people were allowed to do that. now i know - they aren't supposed to.

Cyb3r1954d ago

Some websites sell accounts too Im surprised that noting is being done about this

JackBNimble1954d ago

And they're all stolen accounts

1954d ago
JackBNimble1954d ago

Why are they calling this trading accounts, this is plain and simply stealing.
