Nintendo is going to want to throw in some cloud saves when paying money for the service rolls around. To be fair both PSN and Xbox Live require subscription for the cloud storage, which as far as I am concerned is far better than using an external device.
The only problem right now would be having to get a replacement device thus losing your saves. The pro of an external device was the portability, but in the switchs case it is already portable. Another point is I guess system storage, but considering the small size it would be ideal to throw in a 128-256GB card for games and retain all your saves in the main storage anyways.
