Peter Moore: Gamers should appreciate the impact the Xbox consoles, and Xbox live has had on the industry

The Guardian has been running a five part interview with Peter Moore, with all parts being published last week. Now Moore has left a final message to the readers at the Guardian gaming blog which talks about how brilliant Microsoft is.

"I guess you have to work there to truly appreciate what a unique and special company Bill and Steve have built, and I think gamers need to fully appreciate the positive impact that the Xbox consoles, and in particular Xbox Live, have had on our industry. I worked with a team of people so special and so near and dear to my heart, that not a day goes by where I don't miss them in some way." said Moore.

I don't trust links anymore, after once reading another person's comment on another story here on N4G, where he said, "This site is known to have viruses and bots." Since then I use the Google search tool before clicking links to sites I don't know. The Google search tool shows a red X beside the name of this site, strategyinformer.com I wouldn't recommend going to it and I hope that no ones' computers have been infected with anything. Be careful people.

UPDATE: Okay, I didn't initially notice the link at the bottom of this article on this page that shows the guardianuk... since google does trust that site, I went there instead and am able to read it. I will read it now and if I have anything to add, I will.

UPDATE 2.0: Okay, my response now. I will admit it was a good article. It wasn't fanboyish in any way. Peter, was being candid. He didn't say anything bad about the other consoles and I appreciate that. He was just offering his view on what Microsoft had offered the world with its Windows line of computers and the Xbox consoles. I agree with others here on N4G that I am hopeful as well that Microsoft had learned from their mistakes with the hardware failures and I am one of many thousands of pleasantly surprised individuals--(perhaps 100's of thousands if the hardware failure numbers are true) in that Microsoft took care of me from the start.

My 360 failed on me twice and on the second time, which was this year, they sent me a new console just 5 months before the 3rd anniversary of my inital 360 purchase and told me that the new console that I got for free also has its own 3 year warranty. I was planning to buy a new Elite for I do not have the 120 gig hard drive, but since they have replaced my console with a brand new one and offered another 3 year, all I have to do in this case is just buy the new hard drive. Thank you Microsoft. My trust in you never faltered and I know there are millions of others like myself who feel the same.

And I don't know from experience how the PS3 or the Xbox 360 online experience compares. The only people that should be judgemental are the ones who own both consoles and play them both online. I hope to one day own a PS3 and intend to get one when God of War 3 comes out, but until then, I will trust that PS3 has a good online gaming service, and I know from experience that Microsoft has a good one as well, even though I shell out a mere 50 bucks a year. Pocket change, people. Pocket change. Thats my 5 cents.

Online services for consoles are the new way of gaming and I love it. I do however think that despite their doing us a favor in spearheading the online service, they hamper their future fame with an online price tag. Sony's online is getting better and better each month and more and more folks are using it and yet it remains free. If Live were free it would be and would forever remain king. I will say this as well, the Xbox 360 is great for games but the one thing they did that ruined their rep was the faulty hardware. I hope that MS has learned from their mistakes this time and that they will release a working console next gen. They did so many things right this time but the one cloud still lingering is the RROD cloud.

We have to thank them for the fact that people buy an xbox 360 because it's cheap and they can't afford anything more, then pay for live as well thinking "oh of COURSE we have to pay to play online, I mean that's how it should be and always has been..." oh wait. It shouldn't be and it hasn't been before live. Paying for live does NOT get you a better service, the service is better because there are more features that PSN is starting to catch up on. Paying for live just adds more money onto the cost of the console, had they simply charged more for the console live would be exactly the same, except less people would have bought the console in the first place. Imagine if they sold the console without a wireless controller (oh no wait, they did that), imagine if they sold the console without a controller AT ALL. Then you'd have to buy one and so the console would cost more than it says.

We have them to thank that likely next generation MS will keep charging for online, more PC games will start charging for online, the next PS and Nintendo consoles might well charge for online. The "razor and blades" business model is starting to apply to consoles in more ways than just games and controllers. Peripherals, online, DLC, expansion packs, downloadable games, films, TV shows, music. It's a business model that is tried, tested and works exceedingly well by fleecing money out of those who, if asked whether they would buy a console for £1000 including all these things, would very likely decline. Gone are the days where we buy a game for our console and that's that. Now we might need to buy proprietry hard drives, wireless adapters, expansions, DLC including characters, extra guns, extra maps, extra peripherals, and online, just to get the full experience of the game.

Taking my analogy further, let's say that MS DID release their console sans controller in the basic package. The typical xbox fanboy would then claim "Oh, look, yes we have to pay to get a controller with our console but that makes it better than your controller." No it doesn't. It's the same controller that they could have given away for free with the console. Live is the same service that they could have given away for free with the console.

Reliability?
PS3: Failure rate has been mostly non-existent. Firmware updates have been known to cause issues with BD drives failing. Problems mostly isolated and SCE has issued free-repairs or replacements on occasion when problems arise with firmware updates.

360: RRoD. Disc read errors. Hardware malfunctions due to rushed design and poor circulation within the case. Console has been known to catch fire or melt in certain places at times. Customer outcry against the 360 malfunction problems have forced Microsoft to eat 1.2 billion to establish a permanent 3-yr warranty to all 360 consoles purchased.

Yeah, while I will concede that the 360 has managed to corner a large part of the software market due to incentive packages (read:writing checks) and have built themselves an impressive software library, I still will not accept the silly notion that somehow Sony is ripping people off while Microsoft is some saint of the industry.

Ok, point by point...

1)Wireless:

Yes, it's sold separately, but it's 39.99 (was 49.99).

2)HD Movie Player

No integrated BR or HD-DVD, BUT online movie-store + Win MediaCenter, though which you can stream movies from your PC via wireless or wired local network.

3) Bluetooth

Why the hell does x360 need it? x360 wireless headset connects straight to console via MS wireless protocol (the same for gamepads). You still get 11 meters range, and your battery for the headset will still die as fast as PS3's bluetooth headset one.

4) Mass Discs Storage

Yeah, here is a letdown. BUT! BR read-speed is nearly 1/2 of DVD9, so PS3 owners have to do those ridiculouse game installs every time they get a new game just to keep up with x360 loading speed. And don't tell me I'm wrong - I know what I'm talking about.

5) Online

For XBL you have to pay 39.99 (from the latest news) annually. You'll get online play, co-op for some games, leaderboards, etc.
The hottest points are^ voice chat IN-GAME, video chat IN-GAME, Win Live Messenger (to chat with PC buddies), custom soundtracks (it's not even an XBL option though ^_^) and much more.
PS3's PSN could only dream of that.
Ow, and all x360 (except for Arcades) come with wired headphones, which connect to your gamepad not console, so you'll always have someone to talk to.

6) Hard-Drive

Now the standard hard-drive for x360 is 20gig and I, personally, own that model.
And tell you what, x360 just doesn't need more!
..well until new dashboard, where you'll have an opportunity to install games on HDD to make loadings even faster..
I have 3/4 of all XBLA games (mostly demo-versions though xD), hell a lot of game saved data, HD movies and trailers form XBL, game demos, upgrades for games and dashboard, bla-bla-bla... All in all I have 9.7gigs free, out of 20gigs (keep in mind, you can only use 13.4gigs - the rest for some system stuff).
Meanwhile, with all those game installs, PS3 owners just NEED all the free space they can get. That's the reason why PS3 has bigger HDD than x360 - as I said, x360 just DOESN'T need so much :)

7) Reliability

Ok, I you can see by now, you have already failed in your research SO MUCH that it's just funny.
But RRoD.. C'on man! That problem was solved previous year with some kinda 65nm or something heatsink or processor stuff. There have been NO problems registered with RRoD sold after that SKUs hit the shelves of stores. Only the ones which were bought in release day or +4 or 5 month.

I will pay you $39.99 right now for a wifi adapter for my 360, because every store in my area sells them for $99.99. I suppose your "facts" are just that you found a wifi adapter on sale somewhere (no source, thanks), and you basically conceded every other point to Ashta (even though you somehow attempted to claim victory). Your "facts" about the RROD were incredibly wrong, and I'm not one to pump up the failure rate of the 360 at all (you can check my posts), but your whining is just annoying. When someone is correct, either agree or silently disagree, don't just make up BS and call them wrong. I am happy to say that I am RROD free and ready to buy a new HDD (or possibly an Elite), because mine is almost completely full (20GB, or, erm... 13GB??).

I also have the 360 and PS3 and have read the posts. I tried so hard to stay an xbox fan as I loved the first xbox and think it was way better than PS2 but I cant bring myself to say this now.

The PS3 is in all aspects a better system this generation. I have played the best games both systems have offered and I can say that the PS3's exlusives are TRUE next gen and offer an experience that the 360 hasnt thus far.

The excuse that the 360 is a better priced console is also mute. Plus, I just picked up a SATA 320 gig internal drive for my PS3 for 109 bucks and put it in with no issues.

So not only is MS making us pay for extras like wifi, hdmi, external HD players they make it so that we have to buy their internal hd for a costly price.

This is highway robery. You must admit it. When the 360 first came I thought it was amazing. COD, GOW, Perfect dark, kameo. All great games. . . . .

Until I purchased the ps3..... RFOM blew my mind. Then Warhawk, drakes, heavenly, R&C, GT5, Motorstorm, . . .. MGSIV!! Now we are getting SOCOM, LBP, RFOM2, Motorstorm 2, KZ2.... HOME!!!!

The PS3 is definitely the best system for your money this gen. It has everything you need.

And yes. I filled up the 20 gig drive on 360 in no time with the demos etc. It was pathetic.

I filled up my PS3 60 gig and now i have 320gig. Woohoo!

So basically, Sony has now shown that they are providing their customers with exactly what they said they would. A future proof next gen system that redefines the gaming industry.

I can honestly say. I am trading in my 360 this holiday season. I am keeping my Wii though for parties (tennis, bowling) but thats it. Havent purchased a game on it since Zelda.

I also hope that MS doesnt get out of the hardware business. I truly believe in Peter Moores statement that MS has done alot for the industry. WHY?

Sony went above and beyond the specs of the system they possibly would have released this generation if MS wouldnt have been a direct competitor.

The fact that games will be mostly relegated this generation to be squashed in order to fit a measly DVD9 just because Microsoft was either too arrogant to pay for a next format, or worse, saw the reality that they would be unable to conquer the market without launching first since they know that they are more brawn than brains anyway?

Xbox LIVE wasn't the first service to make it to the market, and it's not even the best as you pay for lag. Considering Xbox consoles have been pretty faulty, and that Microsoft basically bought their way to relevance (by paying for timed exclusives on games that people who own their console are not even interested, not to mention that they are also paying to make every game multiplatform) instead of doing it with hard work and creativity, there isn't much to respect, let alone honor.

Peter Moore should shut his mouth, having a sore ass after losing so much is no excuse to have such a big mouth, you'd think that after eating humble pie so many times he'd be more quiet about his own "achievements" if that's what he likes to think about his career anyway.

I think the original Xbox was certainly something that changed consoles. A standard HDD, which was amazing but dropped on the 360. A standard ethernet port to propel broadband, which was a feat in and of itself. Everyone kind of balked at broadband only for the Xbox, they did see the future with that decision. They were also the first console to offer HD over component. That again is foresight.

The 360, I'm not sure of the revolution. Putting the hardware issues aside. Not much is changing the world of consoles. No HDD, have to pay for wireless, DVD, and that's about it on the hardware end.

Software side: The PC integration is pretty interesting. Sirius (fingers crossed) and Netflix is cool. The changing of the GUI hopefully this week is actually a first for consoles, that's exciting. A movie rental service, and hopefully (the rumored) music purchase portal will be cool. That's about it.

MS is certainly showing they are a software company this time around. With the next Xbox let's have the hardware revolutions of the original Xbox and the software of the 360, it could very well be the perfect console.

Without XBL, PSN would not exist. XBL is my favorite component of my Xbox360.... the service & content are exceptional. It's sad the amount of content & free demos my 360 gets compared to my PS3. Of course, the best feature of PSN is it's free.

It's great that both companies push each other. Competition is good for consumers.

The Dreamcast I believe was the 1st or second console to have online. Also I do believe online would have eventually hit consoles the way Live has but Sony and Nintendo were against it and could have taken up to another 5 to 10 years. I thank MS for making it a standard and pushing the competition to do more and make it easier on developers with great software dev tools.

Nobody here went online with their PC Engine, SNES, Genesis or Saturn? Man, I even haad a mouse and keyboard for them, same with Dreamcast. The Saturn version was more advanced then all of them and you could even get SEGA chanel and download(yes download in 1995)Genesis games to the internal hdd(yes it had one and was bigger then the SEGA CD hdd remember?). SEGA NET and pc servers(specially valve's and epic's) were the best thing before LIVE came along. Now we're spoilled by the LIVE goodness. Damn I miss SEGA.

Well, they let go of a really great console that I was actually modding several of at the time for friends (media center stuff and HDDs). They all liked it and they knew that Xbox had great games. I liked the fact that it was so PC. But I'm glad they moved on. It's like the kid on the Soccer field laying in the grass after he just his ass handed to him. Coach yells "Get UP!" and he's got to get back in the game. Microsoft could have just bowed out of the race entirely, as in not bothering at all with this gen. But they rallied and put together a fine play with a well executed strategy.

I often think that maybe they pulled the play prematurely. But what else could they have done? Sit around another year until PS3 comes out? Sony's statements back then (they were kinda smart) were "if the 360 doesn't do too well, we'll push ps3 back". So if MS waited until 2006, Sony would have probably launched its ps3 in 2007! And ps2 would have had another year of prime time.

So, i guess I have MS to thank for keeping 128bit era sweet and short. A prolonged era would've led to stagnant development cycles, and too many rehashes.

People often see this whole "10 year lifespan" as something great. There's a difference between lifespan and generation, people! Humans have lifespans of maybe a hundred years. But against society as a whole, they can only represent their own generation. This is where Microsoft's model comes in. Work within the span of a generation.

You guys need to thank the xbox for a few things:

5.1 dolby digital audio at the least on all games now (except wii)
The ps2 only had Pro Logic or Pro Logic 2. That is why I never bought a ps2. 2 channel matrixed audio? No thanks. The 80's were good but not that good.

Second, high definition and widescreen gaming. Very few ps2 games even had 480p progressive scan and/or widescreen.

The xbox had many that were 480p and better. I even have 1080i and 720p games for my xbox. And these are NATIVE, not UPSCALED. ( you guys DO KNOW that most 1080p games on the ps3 and 360 are UPSCALED not NATIVE 1080p).

Finally, One gamertag to rule them all. How did having multiple gamertags not drive ps2 owners crazy? One for Socom, another for a different game and so on. That was another reason why I passed on the ps2. One gamertag has been the standard for xbox live since day one.

Having a favorite is fine, but don't ignore facts.

Yes for those who said games look better on ps3 than on xbox360 u are very all Vomit, coz u dont have a clue what in inside those boxes xbox has 3 open end processors that cant be easily used for any purpose and a mega huge RAM for what so ever and ps3 has the cell with 7 SPUs which have limited RAM for each and are each dedicated for on purpose be it sound, graphics, light-shading etc.. this alone make the 360 better to develop on since it brings out the best in a game and developers can fully extract the best quality out of it ps3 on the other hand the what developers refer to as "THE PROBLEM CHILD" coz its just plan sucks to develop on it coz it cant really don anything with its limited space(that is why u need the 10 minute install b4 u play any game and that install swallows a huge chunk of the HDD since it installs part of the game on the console coz the is no space on the RAM) well to cut the long story short xbox will always get better games and faster development rate than the ps3 no matter how u want to look at it.. secondly developers shy away from ps3 coz after to spend a GAzillion to develop on it the games dont sell as well so what profit margins do u get for their hard work.
