Phil Spencer On Xbox’s First Party Lineup: The Proof Will Be In What We End Up Doing

Microsoft has often been criticized for its lacking first party lineup- never more so than now, with some high profile cancellations leaving them with what looks to be a rather dire lineup of games, in number and variety. The old refrain of Halo/Gears/Forza has often been used to describe the Microsoft first party- and there is starting to be an element of truth to it these days.

"The Proof Will Be In What We End Up Doing"

That's ironic.

At E3 2013 he said they would be creating 5 first party studios, the only one that happened was the Coalition and they make Gears Of War, after they cancelled Shanghai and changed the studios name.
https://www.youtube.com/wat...

Or are we talking about starting now?

XXanderXX3039d ago

Shanghai was a tech demo , just like the Samaritan was for Epic all to show off what they can do with said specific engine. Also black Tusk had been around for some time the name change came after they were entrusted with the recently purchased Gears IP .

Kabaneri3039d ago

"name change came after they were entrusted with the recently purchased Gears IP "

Yup and forever doomed to be a Gears factory just like 343 with Halo.

XXanderXX3039d ago (Edited 3039d ago )

@Kabaneri they knew that when they took a vote amongst themselves to decide if that's what they want .

@Overlord

Black Tusk started with a team of approximately 20 full-time staff in 2012 as the project began preproduction, adding staff to grow to almost 100 by the end of 2013. That’s when the Microsoft Studios mothership presented it with a unique scenario and a difficult choice.
"We could continue working on the IP we were working on," Crump says. "Or we had the opportunity to take on Gears of War."

"Microsoft was in discussions with Epic," Crump says. He and other senior members of Black Tusk assembled to discuss the studio's future. "We were hugely invested in what we were working on. You don’t spend a year and a half working on a game without getting attached to it. There was a lot of discussion."
The committee understood that not everyone at the studio would react positively to the change. "I’d be lying if I said there weren’t some people on the team who were disappointed when they found out the thing they’d been working on for so long was going to be shelved," Crump says. "If you’ve been in the game industry long enough, you’re going to go through project cancellations. People go through this period of mourning a bit. You have to give them that space and time to go through that, the sense of loss that people have around something they’re invested in."

But according to Crump, in the end, the final decision was a "no-brainer."

"We went around the table and everybody was in favor of going for Gears of War." On Friday, January 21, 2014, Crump, former General Manager Hanno Lemke and the management team announced to the studio that its in-development project would be canceled, and Black Tusk would immediately transition toward Gears of War.
Crump is cagey about what that game was. "We were in late preproduction. We didn’t have a full vertical slice," he says, referring to a limited, playable build meant to demonstrate a game's core features internally, and perhaps later at shows like E3. "That was something we were working on."

Those are certainly interesting comments if you compare them to what Phil Spencer had to say about the game/project last year:
"The thing we showed at E3 last year, it was something that was done in Unreal and more of a concept piece," Spencer said, calling it "an asset" created by the team to get their creative juices flowing, not necessarily an in-development game.

"The studio has really been incubating different ideas over the past six to nine months on what they might work on," he said, "but the discussion with Epic obviously didn't start yesterday. We've been in this discussion for a while. The leadership team there has known for a while."

Not true.

What happened to Black Tusk's "highly ambitious" new IP?

"Microsoft has had big plans for the studio for some time: Black Tusk was revealed in late 2012 to be toiling away on a new franchise that Microsoft hoped would be "the next Halo".

Whatever they were doing (Shanghai or not) was cancelled in place of Gears Of War 4.

andrewsquall3039d ago

@Overload Don't bother dude. If a "fan" of Xbox like XXanderXX wants to actually be a blind fan and doesn't even remember how events went down the last 5 years, then just let them. They aren't going to listen to reason no matter how hurtful the reality/facts are.

XXanderXX3039d ago

Am blind yet i provided actual commentary proof from a conversation that involved The Coalition studio manager Mike Crump and what he stated . Yet am blind , guess I need to cry more or pray a company refuse to do what best for its self . lol

notachance3039d ago

cool, you explained tons about one of them.

so where are the other four first-party studios he promised?

Muzikguy3039d ago

Starting now would be my guess. Until that fails and they come back with this talk next year. They'll probably be "releasing more games than ever in the history of Xbox and have the best holiday lineup ever" too

dumahim3039d ago

Right, because the proof isn't at all about what they've done so far.

_-EDMIX-_3039d ago

Agreed I actually think that the best course of action for Microsoft right now just from a public relations standpoint is to Simply shut up

they need to seriously stop talking about this crap because all they're doing is aggravating their fan base.

I've yet to hear anyone from Microsoft come out and acknowledge that they don't have a lot of games and don't have a lot of studios and will do something about it instead you're being real rest assured that they have enough and that they're doing just fine no one's really addressing that there's a problem.

Microsoft made an extremely big mistake going into this generation simply because they did not prepare.

While Sony was out here purchasing multiple Studios last generation to gear up for this gen what was Microsoft doing?

So in order for us to get some sort of resurgence from Microsoft game studios we need to see them purchasing multiple teams with the understanding that their purchasing them to create new content for Xbox consumers

At this point Sony is already 10 years ahead of these guys as they started purchasing Studios as way back as 2006 and you're starting to see the fruits of their labor if you haven't already.

There's almost nothing Microsoft can do now to reach where Sony is at , they simply have to start investing in hopes of getting there in 4 to 5 years

343_Guilty_Spark3039d ago

Why don't you let them show their hand?

Overload3039d ago (Edited 3039d ago )

There is no hand to show in this case. There are no secret studios that have been hidden for 3+ years. It wasn't true.

trooper_3039d ago

They've had plenty of time to show their hand. They're doing more talking than showing.

JasonKCK3039d ago Show
DevilishSix3039d ago

We are in the fourth year of this generation if there was a killer hand we probably would have seen it or have some idea about it by now. Personally I don't think Microsoft cares about console gaming, it is small money compared to their other businesses. I just think they are trying to hold on to all those Live subscriptions and slowly converting everything over to Win 10 and PC. Just my opinion don't cut my head off.

rainslacker3039d ago (Edited 3039d ago )

I'm sure everyone is letting them. Some have been asking for them to do that for quite some time now. They just aren't doing it. And if they have, then they are worse off than even I can believe.

MS tends to talk about it a lot, but the actual show seems to be an issue for them. MS has more PR speak than they have games, and some of us are asking what exactly they have. Over, and over, and over again. I've been asking what they have since they started on with the Cloud and CD3, and so far, it's been Forza, Gears, Halo, and now CD3, with some 2nd party stuff thrown in for good measure.

I'm curious where this billion dollars they have invested since before the gen started went, because I haven't seen them publish a billion dollars worth of games.....marketing included. Maybe 1/2 billion, with most of that being Gears, Halo, and 4 Forza games.

trooper_3039d ago

Microsoft needs to stop talking and just *DO* what they're claiming they'll do.

S2Killinit3039d ago (Edited 3039d ago )

basically MS has kept games so they can release the limited number of their exclusives announcements in a short period of time so as to create the illusion that they have a lot of games. Same thing they do with games releases around the holiday season.

dp2774073039d ago

@S2Killinit
They always do this in some way or another, when a new system comes out hey are notorious for doing it.

frostypants3039d ago

Yeah well, this time they super duper mean it!

/s

rainslacker3039d ago

Ironic because some of us have been saying that for years now, but no one listened.

Show, don't tell, has been something I've been repeating since their whole cloud stuff was the secret sauce of the day.

Oh well. Close enough to E3 now that maybe we can see what they are ending up doing. Nice to hear about it, but MS hasn't instilled much faith to think their constant rhetoric is actually believable.

Relientk773039d ago

I think at E3 they're just gonna highlight Project Scorpio and not show many games

freshslicepizza3039d ago

Hope not. They do need to show some commitment in new IPs. Sea of Thieves looks great but they need more than that. Other games need to be well done too such as State of Decay 2 and Crackdown 3. Forza 7 in 4k and 60fps will be a good title to show on Scorpio as well.

If they can get all those out and get favorable reviews that would be a decent year with Halo Wars 2 already out plus a bunch of indie games like Below and Cuphead.

ShadowKnight3039d ago

That's not enough unfortunately

DARKKENT3039d ago (Edited 3039d ago )

Sheesus that's what Xbox owners think is a good line up?

Microsoft really has cut your expectations down to pitiful levels

freshslicepizza3039d ago (Edited 3039d ago )

Did Sony and Nintendo release at least 5 big games last year that people cared about? If so list them please.

georgenancy3039d ago

do your parents work for xbox?lol

andrewsquall3039d ago

@moldybread And then if Sony follow it up in the next 24 hours with ONLY 5 minutes of The Last of Us Part II gameplay, they will instantly crush anything Xbox showed. ^_^
But wait they won't just show that, that will be just one of the stunning highlights of PlayStation's E3 2017 conference. But you don't need me to tell you this since you will be looking at it live with the rest of us, even if you are in Europe and it is 2am.

Its really funny the way people are saying for the 7th time since that infamous Kinect E3 2010 Xbox conference, that "THIS years Xbox E3 is gonna be awesome". Will you ever learn?

-Foxtrot3039d ago

I think they are hoping the reveal of Scorpio will be enough to wow the gaming industry enough so they forget about the lack of games. The "promises" of games and new studios will be used as another excuse to buy them time...for whatever it is they are planning.

GrubsterBeater3039d ago

More and more it feels that their plan is to keep talking and hyping the future of XBox so that they can ignore what's wrong with the present. They keep doing this, hoping that people forget some of their promises, only delivering once in a great while and releasing maybe two mediocre to high rated games around the holidays. Along with them almost hyping last generation games with BC to make customers believe there is tons of games to play.

I feel sorry for any XBox One owner... especially the ones that can't accept they were shat on by MS and their Lord Phil.

MorpheusX3039d ago

@Foxtrot

Exactly. Its more talk, to buy more time, MS is full of it. smh

Youngindy213039d ago (Edited 3039d ago )

Didn't they already say they were gonna do a Pre E3 event to highlight the Scorpio and then focus on games at E3. Dude Keep Up.

TheCommentator3039d ago (Edited 3039d ago )

Yes, Phil just said they may have to do that. Of course you'll get disagrees from people who didn't see the interview with him yet.

Honestly, what else besides games could they show at E3 if Scorpio is unveiled beforehand?

meka26113039d ago

Yea really hoping we start seeing some of the upcoming games like Crackdown 3 and Sea of Thieves.

Macosan3039d ago

Just from reading the comments it seems as most people only read the head line and did not listen to the interview.

aconnellan3039d ago

If you listened to the whole interview, you'd know that he mentioned they're looking into doing a pre-E3 Scorpio reveal and leaving E3 to focus on games

Chano3039d ago

highlight project scorpio and not show many games? did anyone here even watch podcast unlocked? phil said they wont focus e3 on hardware

Who says "maybe we have more games"? Either you do or you don't. And I don't know why someone would say maybe if the answer was yes. Clearly what they have talked about is what they have but they can't stop from trying to mislead people into thinking there is more.

Goldby3039d ago

most likely becuase they are unsure if they want to support the game.

its safer to say maybe and have the title cancelled than say yes and have it cancelled (look at what happened with Scalebound)

So while i do agree if there are concrete games in the pipeline, they should be promoting those, gives not only the developers confidence that Ms is supportin them, even if they aren't namign developers or games, but also new gamers a reason to buy the console.

MRMagoo1233039d ago

I dunno ......I think a concrete game would get boring pretty fast

joking btw in case that flew over some heads

AngelicIceDiamond3039d ago

Play on words as well as playing coy is one tactic. E3 is not for a little while I mean not having no games to announce at, still the biggest stage would be a tad bit ridiculous...but just a tad though.

tyasia03039d ago (Edited 3039d ago )

If he had more games he would just say "we'll have more games". He doesn't have to say what games they are, just that they have them.

No one would dodge IGN throwing them a such a huge bone if they had something.

And even if they show something at E3 it's not going to be out this year.

Xb1ps43039d ago (Edited 3039d ago )

"And I don't know why somone would say maybe if the answers was yes" clearly you are implying that they are not working on games so how is he misleading you into thinking there is more? Maybe can mean just as much yes as no but since you know of no one that does that....... it must be no..

Do you genuinely think that ms isn't working on games? I mean seriously you really think that all while they are about to launch another console?

It's like going back to the argument of consoles are dead all while multiple consoles in one generation are being launched..

FallenAngel19843039d ago

Sony is all-in on PlayStation Plus, says its most expensive tier is thriving

Sony kicks off PS Plus' 15th anniversary by chatting with Game File about the past, present and future of its gaming subscription service: Talking price, catalogue tweaks and where the PS3 games are.

Glad, I’m about to downgrade when they raise the price. For me, I don’t really access much or care about the games they have in the library and if I do, it’d be cheaper to just buy them over time rather than stick to some expensive subscription model.

crazyCoconuts2d ago

When you're new to the service you've got an avalanche of games to play. After you catch up, I agree, it's not worth it beyond the Essential tier for me.
That being said, the Essential tier is the best deal in console gaming imo, based on the monthly games you get to keep.

Profchaos2d ago

Yeah same will be downgrading $214 aud is insane and we don't even get the streaming capabilities in Australia which they said would make the top level subscription cheaper.

If i was to just buy the games I actually play that come to the service id be far better off.

Ill keep the essential tier to retain the games ive collected since the ps3 and for mp but I'm not convinced of the premium tiers value any more

victorMaje2d ago

Went back to essential a few months ago. I’m buying more physical and it has helped in finishing more games.

Profchaos2d ago

Tend to agree if i go to the trouble of buying a disc ill typically finish it

Alos882d ago

Extra is probably the best value for money right now, Premium doesn't have anything special enough to justify paying the additional imo.

OtterX2d ago

*unless you have a Portal & you catch Premium on discount during Days of Play or Black Friday.

Yea, I really do wish they'd up their effort on Premium titles, but allowing a large catalog of titles that can stream to your Portal without even having to use your PS5 is pretty awesome. We travel about 2 hours to stay with my inlaws from time to time, so it's been pretty killer to only need to take my Portal for that!

andy852d ago

Yup if you have a portal premium is the best tier for sure

KyRo2d ago

Extra has been getting worse and worse each month. I've had it since it's launch and it's been great to play some games I may not have played but the selection has been declining rapidly for a while now. My sub runs out in August and I'll be going back to essential. They actually add games to that which are more appealing.

jznrpg2d ago

Add some more classics with trophies. Vagrant Story first

OtterX2d ago

Nice choice. I agree!

Jeanne D'Arc was my favorite PS+ catalog title from last year & I Platinumed it!

Eonjay2d ago

I like Ridge Racer, Tekken and Grandia. Add Xenogears, digimon World 3, Classic GTA and ill be happy

jznrpg2d ago

Jeanne D’Arc was great!

@Eonjay there is a Grandia collection available for PS4, I’m not sure if it’s been on plus already or not

darthv722d ago

cloud streaming to the portal, without using the ps5, is the selling point of premium to me.

Obscure_Observer2d ago

If the consumers are happy, Sony is even happier.

It is what it is.
