Dead Space is the sequel Resident Evil 4 deserved

Eurogamer's Rick writes: "It's often lamented that Resident Evil 4 never received the follow-up it deserved. Resi 5 and 6 have their defenders, but they're not in the same league as Mikami's masterpiece. I think there's a case to be made that Dead Space is that sequel. Civilization developers Firaxis has a theory that a sequel should be one third old, one third changed, and one third new. With regard to Resident Evil 4, Dead Space hits those markers almost exactly. It builds on the ideas of Capcom's game, and even fixes a few of the problems, such as Resi's notoriously terrible dialogue. For a game that set out with the premise of deliberately aping one of the best games of all time, I'd struggle to think of a better accolade."

Dead space used the re4 formula really well. Basically..

NecoTehSergal3042d ago

I guess.... I did enjoy the series, and then completely ignored DS3.

I only liked the first one. That first game though, it was almost perfect. A lot was drawn from re4 and there is no denying it. The action, pacing, inventory and atmosphere. Everything really.

It wasn't a shameful clone though, it upgraded everything and added great things like dismemberment. Improved storytelling with hardly any cutscenes. Sure the story was fairly light but the atmosphere told the tale instead. That is amazing game writing.

Dead space is easily one of my favorite games of all time. I could probably play it today and like it just as much as I did years ago.

I agree. Dead space is a masterpiece.

agreed the first two Dead Space games are among some of the best survival horror titles ever created.

the game doesn't get the credit it deserves.

I would argue that the original Dead Space is more Resident Evil than Resident Evil 4.

Dead Space truly captures the survival elements

Asuka3042d ago

The original dead space was really good. Didn't finish the second game, and never played the 3rd. But the first game was great to play with headphones haha

SmielmaN3042d ago

The first and second were a couple of my favs of the time. Loved them. The third chgd things up a bit in a way that I didn't really like. More action game, less suspense/jump scares. I really enjoyed that series.

You should finish the second game it's really amazing I personally like it's slightly better than the first game but I would definitely say stay away from Dead Space 3 lol

Ex-Naughty Dog Dev Says Resident Evil 4 Inspired Uncharted and Many More Action Games

Former Naughty Dog dev says Resident Evil 4 inspired Unchartted and even Gears of War, particularly the over-the-shoulder camera view.

CrimsonWing6938d ago

It revolutionized third-person shooters, in a genius way that gives you full control of aiming.

CrimsonWing6937d ago

No, I mean RE4. Like the whole snap to over-shoulder and precision aiming was what I meant.

I won’t deny Winback does pave the way in some respect. But it’s not the same at all.

InUrFoxHole38d ago

Both are great series. That's awesome

Samonuske37d ago

I thought this was common knowledge. Resident Evil Revolutionised over the shoulder aiming in 3rd person shooters/action games

italiangamer37d ago (Edited 37d ago )

Influenced basically every third person action game made after it, GTA uses the over the shoulder perspective when shooting since the 4th installment, Red Dead Redemption 1 & 2 too and the Batman Arkham series has the over the shoulder perspective as the main camera throughout the whole game series.
Obviously there are a ton more examples but you get the point 🗿.

Simon's Quest is better than Symphony.

If you're gonna troll, at least make a legitimate attempt.

Levii_9246d ago

Hot damn that's a good list. The only one i never played is AOE2 and i never finshed Chrono Trigger but it was damn good.

Speaking of what's old but holds up amazingly well and plays like a dream.. i played Symphony of the Night for the first time in 2019.. yep that's right. It became one of my favourite games of all time that i replay almost every year. I couldn't believe how good it was. That is almost impossible for me with newer games let alone older ones. Truly a special gem.

LG_Fox_Brazil46d ago

That's a pretty fucking great list

__y2jb46d ago (Edited 46d ago )

The only one I’d disagree with is doom. It shows its age badly I think. After 5 minutes of play these days you put it down.
