There's Already A Game Too Big For The Nintendo Switch's Built-In Memory

The Nintendo Switch costs $300, and includes all kinds of stuff in the box. Today is a good day to remember that it does not include a microSD card, which you are absolutely going to need if you want to take advantage of the luxuries of 2017 and buy your games digitally.

wonderfulmonkeyman2609d ago (Edited 2609d ago )

Good point, but it still stands that you'd be smart to get extra memory space regardless, if you're gonna go heavy into digital instead of physical.
Thankfully I'm not, but I'll be getting an extra card regardless simply because indies might change my mind.

porkChop2609d ago

Aside from Snipperclips and some VC games, I'm going to be going all physical because they're carts. I'll buy a 128GB later on when I really need it. It's not a huge deal for me.

_-EDMIX-_2609d ago

Or you would be smart to not even purchase the device at all if this is what it takes to get content on the device.

I don't see me purchasing much digital games on this device with the exception of a few.

I have no plans to spend even a penny more on this product outside of the actual system and physical games.

wonderfulmonkeyman2609d ago

@Ed
"Or you would be smart to not even purchase the device at all if this is what it takes to get content on the device."
Wow, thanks for proving you want it to fail, buddy.
You might as well forego your supposed purchase of it, with the way you talk; I'm sure there are plenty that will gladly take it in your place.

Zeldafan642609d ago

I got a 2 terabyte harddrive for the wii u and have only used about 60 gigs of it. Almost half of that came from 2 Ubisoft games. I think a 128 gig micro sd card will be more than enough for 80% of people buying the switch and at $40 who can really complain.

bouzebbal2609d ago

Always being positive, lol smh...

AZRoboto2609d ago (Edited 2609d ago )

@wonderful

Maybe Nintendo shouldn't be pulling an Apple here after how they're selling a brand new next generation device with the same storage capacity as their last system that hit market almost five years ago and sold worse than even the Dreamcast...

With the confusing controller SKUs and system cost it's almost like they want it to fail. Not even a packed in game! And this is coming from someone getting it next Friday.

Uken122609d ago

@Edmix

You can still get an external hard drive. I got a lot out of my Wii U's 32gb of memory. i used it for classics from VC and some Indie games. But an SD card isn't really needed until you really need it, if you need it.

bouzebbal2609d ago

Smart? i call that pigeon.
I could have many games and demo in Wii Us 32GB memory. Never been forced to delete anything.
This is laughable..

_-EDMIX-_2609d ago (Edited 2609d ago )

@wonder- no wonderful, I'm not spending extra money to take care of this company's own incompetence.
"Supposed purchase?" I own every Nintendo handheld and I own every Nintendo console with the exception of the Wii U.

Please get off your high horse and stop trying to pretend that every damn Nintendo fan is some sort of religious fanatic for this company.

When 190 million consumers decide that not purchased your Hardware that once purchased at the generation prior it's safe to assume that you might have a lot of ex-fans.

I'm not sure why you keep assuming everyone who criticizes this company doesn't own any of their Hardware.

I actually find it the majority of people that criticize this company are ones that own their Hardware previously.

Sorry buddy but I own a PC I own a PlayStation 4, a Nintendo switch is simply an option for a few games for me I don't need to go around begging and praying and crossing my fingers that someone supports this platform like you do

I could see you on a whole bunch of Articles literally begging in praising games that are just simply rumored to be in development for the switch lol

http://n4g.com/user/blogpos...

Are you serious? I was only joking yet no and behold clicking on your damn name shows this? When did you ever show interest in this game? 😂😂😂 28514;

Let's be honest how many games are you now missing? Are you literally just letting all these games pass you by because you're hoping that something changes in Nintendo and you get to play them?

Oh wow buddy, now it's all starting to make sense. Instead of Desperately begging maybe you should actually look to purchase a PlayStation 4 or gaming PC? You wouldn't need to keep doing this desperate articles....

Earn more bud, you want it need to be in that situation if you actually owned multiple platforms.

I don't need to beg for Final Fantasy 15 to be on this which I already purchased it day one on PlayStation 4 and I've already be in it...ive moved on bud.

The switch for me is literally only going to be used for animal crossing , shin Megami tensei 5 , Bravely 3....

Were as it sounds like you are gambling that everything you've missed on competitor platforms will magically make their way on the switch LMFAO!

Good luck waiting buddy

I'm not waiting for bravely the third to hit PlayStation platforms even though square is actually stated they have plans to bring the Bravely Default series to other platforms , I simply purchase the platform it exists on.

Your out here missing just an absolute flood of games and praying that some of them trickle on the switch lol

@uken- well I'm going to be using this as a portable I'm not going to be hooking up any damn externals to this cuz I don't even plan to purchase that many digital games for it in the first place.

I just don't play enough Nintendo games that actually Justified upgrading the storage space to what device like this.

Anything that I can get on PC or PlayStation 4 I'm just going to get on those platforms and I only purchase to switch to play specific titles only found on that platform mind um only purchasing them as a physical.

Again.... I'm not spending a single cent over the damn price of the device for a bunch of crap add-ons.

MyDietEqualsGames2608d ago (Edited 2608d ago )

They really should have put 100 gigs in there, at the very least. I'll excuse the paltry storage size since it is also a mobile gaming machine, though, even 64 gigs would have been O.K too.
One of the things I keep forgetting about Switch is that it is also a mobile device at heart. It's doing some awesome stuff for what it is.

curtis922608d ago

A good 128gb micro sd card is $39 on Amazon. it's not like people going digital (like me) are somehow screwed.

JasonKCK2608d ago

_-EDMIX-_ you sound like you're begging people not to buy it, and pushing another agenda.

mahmoods262608d ago

No It's one game. Dragon Quest Heroes is going to require 32GB of space.

porkChop2608d ago

It's a set of 1 and 2, is it not?

ziggurcat2608d ago

"It's two games, not one."

not sure how that makes it any better, though. in this day, and age, the damned thing should have a minimum 1TB HDD, not 32GB flash memory.

porkChop2608d ago

It's a handheld. You can't use an HDD on a handheld.

DivoJones2608d ago

I think it's more the point that it was perceived to be an issue and already is before the console has even launched. I've had patches for XB1/PS4 games that are bigger than the entire built-in storage of Switch. Rather than do anything about the problem, they passed the cost of adding storage on to you.. how considerate.

SDHC cards are cheap you say? Then why couldn't they buy them in bulk for a huge discount and integrate them into the system.. and give you a SECOND slot to add storage. Oh right, because they don't need to when they can let you buy it for them. It's not an oversight or a shortcoming, it's a feature!

FBNS2608d ago

No, one game. Dragon quest heroes takes up 32 gigs...which is more than you have access to .... So if you're going digital only and you want to get Dragon quest heroes, you must first buy a 64gig or larger micro sd card... Sad!

+ Show (2) more repliesLast reply 2608d ago
superchiller2609d ago

Wow that's pretty sad. Nintendo cut corners on the Wii U internal storage (only 32gb, with about 25gb usable), and they've done the exact same thing with the Switch. 25gb of usable space is really a joke for a console released in 2017. And what's worse, many physical Switch games are going to require downloaded patches that can only be stored on either internal memory or an SD card, not on the cartridge itself. This includes Zelda, which will require at least 3gb if space.

And at launch the Switch doesn't support external hard drives on the dock.

Looks like Nintendo didn't plan this out very well, they really could have done a better job on the design.

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory2609d ago

Physical games don't install meaning.
One can have 25GB not used for years.

2609d ago
2609d ago
porkChop2609d ago

The 3GB install for Zelda is only on the Wii U.

But this isn't a new concept. Both 3DS and Vita required you to buy a memory card if you wanted to download games. Hell, you couldn't even save your physical games on Vita without a memory card.

gedden72609d ago

You do not have to install ANYTHING ON THE SWITCH...

hulk_bash19872609d ago

@gedden7, so any future firmware/system updates are gonna be installed where?

neoandrew2608d ago (Edited 2608d ago )

System updates will be replacing that locked rest of 32 gb space, locked for system use, that is not the problem at all, the problem is, game updates, lets face it, pc, ps4, xone, all games on this platforms needs day one patches and then some, sometimes it is below 1gb in total for the whole game life, but sometime it is 3gb or even more. I don't see how switch games would not need patches, some miracle devs will make those games and never have to update something?

They most probably will and those patches will be INSTALLED on that tiny 25gb, add some digital games on top of it and this is really small. And don't forget DLCs!!!

So small that they should sell at minimum 64gb build in storage version, 32gb is just a sad joke.

SO YEA YOU HAVE TO INSTALL UPDATES ON SWITCH

Taero2608d ago

And the Vita fared so well commercially...(and I say that owning one, the memory card prices still pissed me off and didn't help it sales wise).

ziggurcat2608d ago

@gedden7:

"You do not have to install ANYTHING ON THE SWITCH..."

DLC.

Neonridr2609d ago

how much internal storage did the Vita or 3DS have just out of curiosity? I am completely confident that external HD support will be there again like it was with the Wii U. I have a spare 500GB HD just kicking around from my Wii U that I can use for my Switch.

Otherwise I will buy a memory card. But since all my purchases are going to be primarily physical with zero to little install space required, it's a non-issue.

Even if you go physical with the PS4/XB1 you will eventually run out of space unless you constantly delete games.

RosweeSon2609d ago

External hard drive for when your out on the go? No thanks. Micro Sd Card inserted inside no extra boxes no extra cables no extra bulk... no Dramas. ✌🏻🤓

The_Sage2609d ago (Edited 2609d ago )

I simply installed a 2 terabyte hard drive.

Disagree if you will, but the fact remains that I did install a 2 terabyte hard drive.

I believe that many people on this site are not smart enough to realize that it's agree or disagree, not up or down voting. Poor silly idiots.

RosweeSon2609d ago

Yeah I have a 2TB PS4 and sure it fills up but that's because every game even physical discs take up 40-60gb+ mandatory install. Zelda is what 13gb no mandatory installs on switch, physical game as it'll hold its value micro sd for the future. Look at 3ds you can get by with a 8-16gb easily I've got 32gb I've got a couple of full sized games smash bros animal crossing (free) one of the laytons. Luigis mansion, Zelda between worlds. Majoras mask. 20 ambassador games countless VC over GB/GBC/NES/SNES and game gear 3d classics. Plenty of space left... why because Nintendo have heard of compressing their data. Just get your big games like Pokemon etc as physical go digital on the rest. ✌🏻

nitus102609d ago

The XB1 already has external drive support and the PS4 will have this feature fairly soon. That said you still have to purchase an external drive or in the case of the PS4 a larger internal drive and in all cases this is optional.

For games to run properly on either the PS4 or XB1 they have to be installed on internal or external drives since no game will run directly off the install media which in this case is a Bluray disk.

The Switch like the N64 going backward can play games directly from the cartridge or in the case of a digital download directly from where the game is installed be its internal storage (32GB) or microsSD storage which (of course) you will have to pay for.

It is not difficult to go into the pros and cons of the PS4, XB1 and the Switch but like it or not the Switch is a portable device that really will require cartridges or microSD card to remain portable. As per performance of the actual storage media, the basic 5400rpm HDD of both the PS4 and XB1 is about 100MB/sec which is not all that different to the performance of a high-quality microSD card which terms of cost per GB is much more expensive than an HDD or SSD for that matter.

Overall it will be cheaper in te long term to consider getting most games for the switch on a cartridge but (you can easily check this out now) you are going to be paying more for a game on a cartridge than a game that comes out on a Bluray disk.

Note: You can get cheap microSD cards but performance wise they are much less than a standard HDD. Even top of the range microSD cards which can be very expensive can't compare in performance and cost per GB to standard SSD's which both the PS4 and XB1 can take. Don't believe me then check out the following: https://havecamerawilltrave...

WPX2609d ago

Even so, if you need space, you can get 128GB cards for as low as 40 bucks right now. Good quality too.

Neonridr2608d ago

@The_Sage - yeah I put a 2TB in my base PS4, then when I got my Pro swapped the 1TB from that into the base PS4, sold it, and kept the 2TB for my Pro. But still, that's an additional purchase. So being upset that the Switch will need external memory eventually is no different than a base PS4 / XB1 requiring either a larger internal drive (PS4) or an additional external drive.

@RosweeSon - I am expecting HD support for when it is docked. You will be able to manage the storage on the Switch from there and swap games around as you see fit. Definitely not on the go :P

Except for barely £10-15 you can make that 128gb on top of the original 32gb (25 useable Zzz, standard) micro sd cards are dirt cheap and hey if it's gonna take up all that space maybe just grab the physical. Just a thought.

DarXyde2609d ago (Edited 2609d ago )

Oh, boy....

You don't install the games if you buy physical. This is only an issue if you go digital, which I discourage for 2 reasons:

1. The internal storage pretty much says it should only be used for apps, indies, VC games, or, if you're desperate, a rare game you cannot find....pretty much the case with 3DS.

2. The network, likely to be in an infantile state for a while, would likely struggle to deal with everyone and their mother trying to download large files.

The decision to use cartridges means games won't really need to load (so there's no need to install to reduce wear and tear on the drive). And the games save to the cartridge. In principle, you will never need to invest in extra memory provided you download conservatively.

RosweeSon2609d ago

But it's peanuts anyway people moaned at 32gb Vita cards being £60/80 yet 128Gb for barely £10/15 and still people are moaning. It's that age old thing of don't knock it until you tried it I suppose let's face it no one has. A very select few anyway can't wait to actually get mine and listen to all the good stuff I'm sure it won't be to everyone's taste but what is.

superchiller2609d ago (Edited 2609d ago )

@ DarXyde - "You don't install the games if you buy physical."

So there won't be any digital-only games released for the Switch (like there are for all recent consoles, including the Wii U)? No DLC for any games (Zelda will have it)? No patches for any games (like Mario Kart and Splatoon for the Wii U)?

There certainly will be digital-only Switch games. There will also be DLC and patches.

Think about what you're going to say before you post, your comment is not correct at all.

DarXyde2608d ago

Superchiller,

Did you miss the part where I said you should use the space for digital indies, vc games, etc.? Because I said that.

But even then, you will likely need to upgrade the storage. And honestly, who cares? You think 500GB was enough space for the PS4 or Xbox One? They might be if you didn't need to install EVERY GAME. But you do, which is not the case with Switch. I have 2TB in my PS4 and I'm still sweating bullets.

Games are just insanely large and need patches now, but I would consider the use of SD cards pretty merciful since it's cheap and you probably won't be expanding too much.

smashman982609d ago

Expandable storage is super cheap and easy to find i got combine that with the fact that physical media requires no installation id say 25 gb is more than enough for a few smaller digital titles and a buncha saves

JackBNimble2609d ago

My wife wanted a switch... Thank God she can reason and I talked her out of it.

Aquietguy2609d ago

Buy physical then. There no installs.

superchiller2609d ago (Edited 2609d ago )

So where will the game patches be installed for those physical games? Or the DLC?

Right, those will have to be installed on the internal storage or the SD card. Nothing is going to be installed on the physical game cartridge, even game saves have to be stored elsewhere.

And please don't try to claim that all Nintendo games are released as complete packages with no patches or DLC, we all know that is false.

Neonridr2609d ago

so Zelda is 13GB. Honestly how big do you think the DLC would be for that? A couple of GB at most?

wonderfulmonkeyman2609d ago

Compared to installs, the amount most of those DLC's will take up will be tiny by comparison.
You're seriously just trying to make a mountain out of a molehill.

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory2609d ago

sorry but Switch is mostly going to be Japanese games.
Patches and DLC for those games don't even go over 1GB.

They arent western games. They know how to compress.

RosweeSon2609d ago

They not gonna have 20gb patches like halo collection tho and if they do it'll make me seriously wonder what I was buying day one. Nintendo games Very VERY rarely get patches sure Pokemon, Mario Kart, Smash, Splatoon... all online games with online features sure they need minor updates, Nintendo get it Right the first time. Quality testing is second to none hence why you'll very rarely get a patch for a Nintendo game unless it's an online game and it's had a new map added or something. Not everybody rushes their games out unfinished or broken and then try their best to get the band aids out and salvage a turd.

Goldby2609d ago

@OtakuDJK1NG-Rory

MGSV for X1 has total patch size of 4gbs,
Final Fantasy 15 has over 10gbs of patches already. 8gb on day one alone

Rippcity2609d ago (Edited 2609d ago )

Superchiller, you're right and everyone else in this thread is a fucking idiot. They are gonna miss out on so many indie opportunities that every other console will get. Basically guarantees a lack of games. Getting BotW on my Wii U and then I'm never buying another piece of Nintendo garbage ever again.

Segata2609d ago

The Switch supports 2TB SD cards. Something that doesn't even exist yet but they put it in for good measure. It uses standard mini SD cards so it's not like it will have the issue Vita had. C'mon everyone has SD cards laying around the house anymore.

donman12609d ago

Silly article and somewhat misleading. Why would I want to download 32(+)GB worth of game when that limits its resale value. A physical copy of the games like this is the way to go.

PlayableGamez-2609d ago (Edited 2609d ago )

A lot of people are moving to digital.
If you are not planning on trading the game in or collecting it, physical is pointless and actually inconvenient compared to digital.
On top of that, what about digital sales and what not? I mean most of my games now days are digital because of digital sales.
The only reason I personally buy physicals is because I get pre-order discounts from Amazon and some physical games have good deals. But that's about it. I don't trade-in anymore because it's rather a rip-off now days.

gedden72609d ago

Then if they want a Switch they better get used to going to a store and buying the actual game... Hmm go figure, something physical is important again... Shish these gamers now a days.

PlayableGamez-2609d ago

It's pretty selfish to tell someone to get use to something because a fault of Nintendo. Lol.

DarXter2609d ago

Nintendo have never really done digital sales though, as far as I remember.

FinalFantasyFanatic2609d ago

Personally I love physicals, it's a habit leftover from until last year, when I got decent internet. I still prefer physicals, but I like having a collection to display.

donman12608d ago

Where is the stats to back up your claim that digital downloads of large AAA games are out pacing physical copies? I am all about popping in a game and instantly playing vs waiting for a large file to be downloaded.

2608d ago
PlayableGamez-2608d ago

Wow a bunch of morons in this thread. First off, I NEVER made the claim that Digital Sales are out pacing physical, I said a lot of people are starting to move digital. That is factual.
Secondly, it you prefer physical, that is fine! But the fact does not change that people are slowly starting to buy all forms of media (including video games) digitally. It's a choice that I think gamers should have.
Lastly, some of you guys are stating that price in physical is better. I did say that physical media SOMETIMES have better deals than digital, but the other way can be argue.

Let's put all that aside okay. If Nintendo is planning on selling games digitally and DLC, 32 GB on system memory is not going to work.

nunley332608d ago

I would really disagree that physical is pointless, no collector actually buys digital, that defeats the purpose of it. If you're collector, physical is the only way to go. what's gonna happen to your precious digital games when nintendo shuts everything down and you can't get access to your digital games when their new hotness comes out and a system a few gens removed has its servers retired?

CrimsonWing69551d ago

It’s frustrating how they barely update that library. I get that Jimbo hates old games, but c’mon, the classic catalogue with trophies was a big draw for me. Was really hoping to get some heavy duty classic PS1 games to platinum. Looks like they’ll do exactly what they did on PS4 with the PS2 library…

LucasRuinedChildhood551d ago (Edited 551d ago )

Games like Resistance: Retribution have already been rated as well so they have some stuff ready.

I think they still don't have a healthy supply of classic games for the next few months and they have to really spread them out ... so because of all those Yakuza remasters on Premium this month ... they made the decision to hold off putting up more PSP or PS1 games until next month. :(

They need clearer communication on this. They could have said that we can look forward to some PSP games next month or something.

FinalFantasyFanatic551d ago

I'm so glad I stuck with the essential tier, I'd be ticked paying more with the expectation that the classic catalogue would be regularly updated and built up. The classic catalogue was the biggest draw of the upper tiers for me, so not seeing any new PS1 games is pretty disappointing.

Yes, loads - they just stupidly havn't updated the list on the console!

I can't recall of the top of my head but there's been a bunch of games, probably about 10 or so. I'm gonna drop Shu another email and try and get him to tell the UX team to update the list. It's annoying when they don't update things

VersusDMC551d ago

I checked out the soulstice trial recently. And i heard they added dying light 2 so i might check that one out as well.

MrNinosan551d ago

Running out of steam? This month is amazing, and the months before it has been great aswell.
At least 3 of the Dragon Quest games are great, Medium is okay, Assassins Creed is nice gems for those who missed put, Inside amazing, Castlevania superb, the Yakuza remakes are fantastic.

Lots of Trials has been added simce launch.
If you don't use the service or are interested enough to first check what's there, why comment?
