Splatoon 2 On Nintendo Switch Will Support Voice Chat Using Mobile Devices

As Nintendo had previously suggested, it looks like the Nintendo Switch will in-fact support voice chat via smartphones and other smart devices. In a blurb about Splatoon 2, Nintendo stated the below: “Splatoon 2 in particular will offer voice chat, a much-requested feature from our overseas fans, using smart-devices”.

Is it just me or does this sound incredibly awful?

Erik73573070d ago (Edited 3070d ago )

Let's just wait till launch to understand this

rjason123069d ago

Nah it's easier to bash it, in hopes of convincing people not to get it.

freshslicepizza3069d ago

thats the thing, why do we have to try and guess? nintendo just can't be 'normal' can they? nope, they have to constantly add their parental guideance into how we communicate from friends codes to other overly complex overlays.

Why do you need to wait? You think having to use a phone alongside your portable console may be a good idea?

The only way it would be acceptable would be if it just automatically "piggyback's" your phone's signal as a Bluetooth device without you having to do anything.

It's a bit of a cheapskate solution ( the thing should have communications built in), but if it just handshakes with your phone (which remains in your pocket) it would be usable.

Lol

Look I understand you like this company and this product but I don't really believe it's necessary to use this to understand that it doesn't make any sense.

Why should I get used to using something like a voice chat using a completely separate device when I haven't actually needed to do that for the last several console generations? For god sakes the original Xbox had voice chat...

Ie 2002 bud. Xbl

This is the perfect example of what people are talking about when they say this company is completely out of touch.

rainslacker3069d ago

It's pretty well understood. And mostly not really liked.

I think the ability to use voice chat on a cell phone is a good option, but being the only way to provide the feature is just fail all around.

It doesn't even affect me, because I don't use such features, but this kind of stuff is just head slappingly stupid.

If Nintendo were more clever, they'd find a way to tether a person's phone cell connection as a secure and easy to set up access point, to allow online play while on the go, while circumventing the stupid blocks that many mobile carriers put on their phones.

But is it *only* through mobile devices? The official specs say the headphone port supports mics and headsets. The system also supports Bluetooth 4.1. So there is no reason why in-game voice chat couldn't be done through the Switch itself. Otherwise, what is the point of the mic/headset compatibility? It doesn't make sense.

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory3070d ago

They only said Splatoon 2 for Voice Chat via Mobile.

wonderfulmonkeyman3070d ago (Edited 3070d ago )

I would assume the compatibility is there for the games that WILL have in-game chat for public lobbies, like Call of Duty.
Splatoon is probably not going to have public in-game chat, because the devs behind it hate the toxicity of public online shooter hubs and don't want that as a part of Splatoon 2, so they're offering the chat app in phones as a way of chatting with friends while playing. ( which is kinda dumb, just like it was when they did it in the first game)

Even though this method is very convoluted, just watch all the people who defended the lack of voice chat in Splatoon 1 be excited for voice chat at least being present in Spla2on

'Splatoon 3’s' Inkopolis DLC Might Be Nostalgic, But It’s Totally Shallow

o matter what the reasoning is behind Splatoon 3’s lack of content and substance in the first half of its paid expansion, Wave 1: Inkopolis is certainly not worth any fan’s money and should have always been viewed as a small bonus to tide fans off from what’s still to come.
