Michael Pachter on Switch Projections, PlayStation 5 Date, and Xbox One's Future

On this week's episode, Wedbush Securities research analyst and host of the Pachter Factor, Michael Pachter, joins host Josiah Renaudin to discuss the business of making video game projections. Pachter explains why the Nintendo Switch might need a price cut, when we can expect to see the PlayStation 5, why Microsoft will always be second in the console race, the future of virtual reality, and why you don't need to worry about 4K until 2020.

Smart man that Michael Pachter.

bloop3069d ago

I don't know who's giving you disagrees because you're right, he is a smart man. Anyone that can get paid well and make a good living out of just pulling random predictions out of his ass has to be a smart man.

IAmLoki3069d ago

Almost everything he says the opposite happens.

BG115793069d ago

He is smart. How the hell do you explain for him making money with his predictions ? The guy is mostly wrong, but people still pay him to get his point of view of things.
He's smart alright. ^^

indysurfn3069d ago

@IAMLoki perfect analysis. That is how Analyst get up liquidity for there clients. Tell the public the opposite of what his client wants to do. If the Client wants to sell a company he will pump it up ahead of time. If his clients need to buy a company they will put it down ahead of time.

Lol, 2020? Patcher so far away from the reality...

Omnislashver363069d ago

With PS5 in 2018-2019 we'll fully exploit 4K for some games very soon. With 1800p for now, there's already an advantage for 4K in 2017. This guy is an idiot.

demonddel3069d ago

Sony just release the Pro it hasn't even been 6mons yet and yall already talking about the PS5

RosweeSon3069d ago

Your not getting a ps5 anytime soon. Scorpio doesn't come out until late 2017. Sony just realised their pro 3 months ago. They've barely just cleared 50 million the halfway mark for them they got another 2-3 years of PS4 minimum. Can't see a ps5 launching until late 2019 (Dec Japan Only) if at all... 2020 the likely time.

Omnislashver363069d ago (Edited 3069d ago )

@demonddel

Are you f-ing joking? We're at an article with Patcher talking about 4K arriving in 2020. I just bought and am content with a PS4-Pro, the only reason I brought up PS5 is because that's what the article is about. Try reading next time? Talk about shooting the messenger.

freshslicepizza3069d ago

Soon after scorpio comes out there will be more and more talk about the ps5. It's just natural for the community to not feel inferior as far as tech and performance. The issue Sony then faces is what is the value of the PS4 pro especially if the PS5 does not support PS4 games. Microsoft wants a continuation of your software to stay with you.

ShadowKnight3069d ago (Edited 3069d ago )

@Moldybread

What makes you think the PS5 won't support PS4 games??? If the PS5 have an AMD GPU in it I'm sure it will support PS4 games and BC.

FITgamer3069d ago

2020 Sounds reasonable. That's when I personally would expect a PS5 launch.

smashman983069d ago

I'd say late 2018 to mid 2019

freshslicepizza3069d ago

2020 at the very latest, probably 2019. i expect sometime next year in 2018 leaks will be out there and that is exactly what sony wants, to keep the focus away from scorpio if it does gain some traction for microsoft.

ShadowKnight3069d ago (Edited 3069d ago )

@Moldybread

It will keep the focus away from Scorpio regardless imo until Microsoft release a big new IP from their first party studios. I'm waiting for their new big franchise that's bigger than Halo.

morganfell3069d ago

It isn't just when it is out that matters but also when it is announced. They can announce it long before they have complete specs, a design, and exact launch date. Any of it. Announcing it will take the wind out of the competition fast. Particularly if they say it will be B/C with current PS4 titles. I do not think B/C is a big issue but it will push some consumers toward the PS4 if they know the PS5 supports those titles. It is more about marketing than reality.

Psytrix3068d ago

We'll all be buying 8K sets by then. :-)

FlyingFoxy3068d ago (Edited 3068d ago )

When 4k is only just starting to be playable on PC with high end GPU's, if wanting 60fps in some games? Not likely, games will run like utter crap for a long time at 8k when 4k hasn't even fully stretched it's legs yet. Then 4k 144hz monitors are coming out this year, they would be much better.

For TV's 1080p is also fine, even Linus reviewed a 4k set recently and said there isn't a big difference. It's all a distance thing, sit a normal/average viewing distance from the TV and you'd not notice much of a difference. Really it's only for sitting very close up, ideal for a PC monitor only mostly. Even then it depends on the screen size.

LamerTamer3069d ago

Scorpio is much more powerful than the PS4 pro so we will see.

Sm00thNinja3069d ago

Says who? Have you seen official specs?

Eldyraen3069d ago

Every single piece of information has pointed in that direction. You can argue it's not a full generation above it (as most full generation leaps are 2-3x more powerful or even more) but it's still substantial.

If rumors are right it's basically about a generation above One/PS4 (base) and still about 1.5 beyond the pro's power. Are the rumors true? Who knows but just going by Teraflops alone (not really a perfect system) it's significant no matter how you want to look at it.

It doesn't mean it will make it a success (I still see PS4 outselling One) but the power difference should be real.

yeahright23069d ago

@eldy Teraflops are a horrible measure though. I mean the PS4 Pro can do 8 teraflops technically.

http://segmentnext.com/2016...

Add to that new rumors that the scorpio will also be doing quite a bit of upscaling... best we all wait for official specs before comparisons start.

RosweeSon3069d ago

Doubtful as other than a name and claim "it's gonna be all powerful" it's all up in the clouds still.

BizarroUltraman63069d ago

@yeahright,

If the Pro can do 8.4 tflops, then the Scorpio can do 12 tflops using the same half methods. So lets stop trying to move to post even further. The Scorpio no matter what you guys have to say is still gonna be more powerful than the Pro. Be it 1.5x or more...

JasonKCK3069d ago

Yup! some were released last year at E3. Deny all you want but Scorpio is significantly more powerful than the Pro. You would have to stick another PS4 in the Pro just to get close.

81BX3069d ago

@smooth
Do you think it wont be? Or around the same?

ChickenOfTheCaveMan3068d ago

@BizarroUltraman6 Who says the 6 teraflops number is not calculated by saying like 25% of the operation should be done in half floats? And to say that Scorpio is much more than the Pro is like saying the PS4 is much more powerful than X1, same ratio, I'll go with only "more powerful" if the specs are right.

yeahright23068d ago

@bizzaro, take off the fanboy hat for a second and you'll realize the point I was making wasn't that the Pro will be more powerful, it was that what we're using to measure scorpio, isn't the best tool. And we don't know if the scorpio will be able to use the same trick to double its teraflops. Why? Because we don't have the specs yet (hence why I said we should wait for the specs). On top of that, even if the scorpio can't double the teraflops, it won't mean that it's less powerful. Why? because teraflops is not a goo way measure power. It just gives you a ball park of what it's capable of. (hence why I said teraflops is a horrible way to measure.)

Old_Boss_3069d ago

Scorpio Fall 2017 , PS5 Fall 2019 (probably) and PS5 probably will be more powerful and then a new more powerful Xbox in Fall 2020/21 and so on and on this cycle will never end.

ShadowKnight3069d ago (Edited 3069d ago )

But what console will have the most exclusives and first party studios? That will be key ntm who will have the most popular trademark in the world by 2019-2020? Microsoft or Sony?

3069d ago
BizarroUltraman63069d ago

@ShadowKnight, popular trademark or brand? Playstation was established 4-5 yrs before Xbox came. And its popularity has only grown since, I think PS5 will be a sure hot seller when it comes around if this gen is any indication. And PS will still have #1 position. As for Microsoft, they have work to do to fix brand image with all the 180s they do, they lost some trust from gamers. Scorpio and some new games can fix that tho... I'll wait and see what happens.

Cmv383069d ago

Much more powerful? Based on what?

LamerTamer3069d ago

Everything said about it including leaked specs.

RosweeSon3069d ago

PS4 still got plenty of grunt under the hood you've seen god of war on ps2 Gran turismo 6 on PS3... PS4 has got some big big games still to come and they prob won't be fully flexing the console give it 2-3 years when it's nearing the end of its cycle they'll get some great looking games out for it still and Xbox wanna go next gen haha. Only because they've given up on this one already.

I agree with him on quite a few things in particular the 4K broadcasting as I have dish and there are only a few PPV channels that do 1080P most are 1080i or 720P. I love my 4K tv though and do look forward to more content. As it is right now the Pro is good enough and the games that are out or are coming while they may not be native 4K they look absolutely beautiful, Horizon, Nioh, Mass Effect, God of War, Uncharted 4, Days Gone and so on. The buffer between gens seems smart as well.

Nintendo Switch 2 review

LLC: "Nintendo Switch 2 is a massive upgrade in every way that matters on a day to day basis, and with some firmware updates it could be even better."

It’s definitely an upgrade, not sure about massive.

Grilla5h ago

It is massive compared to the switch 1. 6-10X the power, but compared to current standards it’s the bare minimum.

RedDevils5h ago

It's just a minor upgrade nothing special. Could have included the Oled screen but greedy Nintendo have something planned for it already.

Yesyes4h ago

Oled screen means nothing when people have OLED tv's.

Rage774h ago

You are self aware of how dumb and "sheepy" that tagline of "greedy" sounds like at this point in time, right?
Every little entitled twat on the internet has used it ad nauseum, as if all of a sudden you somehow struck gold or something. it ALMOST sounds as infantile as the other meme vomit brain rot: "Defending the billion dollar company, blah, blah" FFS. tell me its "irony" at least what you are trying to express, so at least i can give you some credit for being "clever" or bold. I refuse to believe you ACTUALLY believe what you are saying, unironically,

repsahj5h ago

Great review! We have almost the same impression of the Switch 2. I don't care if the screen isn't OLED, because when I put it next to my friend's Steam OLED screen, they barely deviated in quality.

anast4h ago

Better than the Steam Deck not as good as the other consoles on the market.

As someone who has been gaming nearly as long as gaming has been around (since the early 70's), you'd think I'd be against this. Having grown up with all the major platforms and the whole notion of physical ownership... but I'm not. i embrace this as it is a revolutionary convenience. And one i know for a fact many (especially here) have not even given the fair chance to use. I get it... i was there too. But now i have a new outlook on it. It really is a hell of an option if you just want to play with no commitments. By no means am i saying this should replace traditional gaming, its an option. And one that people should look at optimistically as a way to compliment traditional gaming. There is room for both to thrive.
