UK Nintendo Switch Games Come with an Eye-Watering Recommended Retail Price

Following Nintendo's official Switch reveal presentation last night, retailers have begun accepting pre-orders for the vast majority of titles announced during the show. However, those in the UK may be in for a shock at some of the games' recommended retail price (RRP) over in these shores.

£60 is an absolute rip off. New Xbox one and PS4 games go for around 40-45 quid what the hell are Nintendo thinking

TankCrossing3073d ago

RRP for a Sony game is usually £49.99.
3rd party games from EA/Activision usually £54.99

Nintendo aren't so far off. The bigger problem is that their games actually stay around the RRP for almost half a century.

gbsrnctaln3073d ago

Nintendo "ISN'T" so far off. ISN'T ISN'T ISN'T ISN'T

SoulMikeY3073d ago

Gbsrnctaln,

Nintendo can be referred to as a conglomerate. Those people (Nintendo) aren't looking this way. You wouldn't say "those people ISN'T looking this way". Many people make up a company, and the company name is just that, a name. A name cannot make decisions, people can. So when people are referring to a "company's decisions", they are talking about the people making them, not the name.

Don't be a nazi.... they got stomped for a reason.

blady_man3073d ago

Why keep supporting nintendo in this matter, i am a nintendo fan, but there is no way that they can change £60 for a game, i dont care if its zelda or not!! Its too much!!!

TankCrossing3073d ago (Edited 3073d ago )

Strange to see so many disagrees for stating pricing details that are quite easy to verify.

Amusing to see a wannabe grammar nazi fall flat on his face though.
http://itre.cis.upenn.edu/~...

TankCrossing3073d ago

@blady I'm not supporting them. I have no plans to buy a Switch, or any of thr games.

I only posted to give a little context on UK pricing as it may not be common knowledge on a global forum like N4G.

DasTier3073d ago (Edited 3073d ago )

Actually the official RRP for most PS4/Xbox one games was £59.99.

I guarantee the RRP for those Switch games will be more in line with XOne/PS4 by launch.

jrshankill3073d ago

Tank... where are you buying your games? You are getting ripped off if ur paying that

TankCrossing3072d ago (Edited 3072d ago )

@jrshankill RRP stands for "recommend retail price", and it is dictated by the publisher. It is not what I pay for games. Here are some current RRPs for reference:
The Last Guardian £49.99
Gravity Rush 2 £49.99
Battlefield 1 £54.99
COD Infinite Warfare £54.99
Overwatch £54.99

All RRPs verified on the official Playstation store. To further illustrate the difference between recommended retail price and actual price, TLG is currently on sale for £29.99, with a nice slash through the £49.99 RRP.

Sometimes commenting on N4G is hard work :-/

InTheZoneAC3072d ago

Nintendo isn't, not Nintendo aren't

TankCrossing3072d ago

^^ Sigh.

You either haven't been paying attention, or you have a very dry sense of humour.

Irishguy953072d ago (Edited 3072d ago )

Nintendo is a company. Its not a plural. So aren't is wrong. Isn't is right.

A company is single separate entity..nowadays. In fact a company has rights. That's why a company goes bankrupt, not the shareholders/owners.

Now, i'm gonna stop being a **** and join in.

Screw Nintendo! Consumerism! Blah di blah.

Anyway, if they're targeting hardcore gamers they're going out their blind. If they manage to snag casuals then fair ****s. Casuals don't care about prices -> Iphone.

bluefox7553072d ago (Edited 3072d ago )

Collective nouns can be used plurally, especially when it's obvious he's referring to a group of people that call the shots at Nintendo, and not something more abstract. Isn't would have been correct as well, but aren't is not incorrect.

TheSaint3072d ago

More like £45 at most, go to your local Sainsbury's or Tesco.

nX3072d ago (Edited 3072d ago )

Guys calm down, this is only one of the smaller ways the UK will be f***ed after Brexit. You will curse many more things in the next few years than just inflated game prices.
Edit: There you go

lmao Don't have a heart attack.

TankCrossing3073d ago (Edited 3073d ago )

Dude you're grammar are terrible,

Thatgrammar3072d ago (Edited 3072d ago )

"Isn't" is the correct word to use when referring to a company, like in the senteces listed above. When talking about a city, L.A. for example, proper English grammar dictates that we say, "L.A. isn't a small city." We would not say, "L.A. aren't a small city." Nintendo and L.A. are singular nouns, thus they are not plural nouns. In conclusion, education.

TankCrossing3072d ago (Edited 3072d ago )

@thatgrammar Google it, and feel silly.

Thatgrammar3072d ago

@TankCrossing
I am living in the United States of America. Over here, as apposed to British English, you should refer to a company as a singular noun. A company name is a collective noun. I did google it, and you just because some person wrote something in their blog or article does not make them correct. Go speak with professor with a degree in some form of English that applys here and ask them the proper way to speak of a company.

TankCrossing3072d ago (Edited 3072d ago )

This is an article about UK pricing, so the chances are high that some of the people you "corrected" are actually British (I know I am). To make matters worse, your own post is rife with minor grammatical errors.

In conclusion, take your arrogant quip about education, crawl back into your hole, and emerge when you've learned some humility.

It is indeed got Mario Kart ordered at £43.51 tho decide if I'm getting nearer the time.

solderman3073d ago

I remember this happened with the Nintendo 64 in the UK. Many games came out at £60 sometimes even £70

Immorals3073d ago

Everything about the switch seems a rip off, just like the Wii u

Deadpooled3073d ago (Edited 3072d ago )

In the UK (with good knowledge and awareness of where to shop) you can get PS4/Xbox One games from months before upto a week or two before release for £35-40, much less than the RRP, then at release games tend to go up to £40+ until a few weeks later. I've never spent more than £40 for a game at release day for many years (only spent more for special and collectors games with stuff I want).

Edit - And of course I get disagrees for stating a simple fact, just go on HotUKDeals to see how many retailers like simplygames, base, shopto, even Amazon offer games well before release for sub £40 even nintendo games. The only reason I preorder is because of this reason, to get the game for a good amount cheaper than at release day along with proper research/demos/betas and reputation of the developer/publisher making the game.

hahaha3072d ago (Edited 3072d ago )

Nintendo is obviously thinking of how to suck you up dry. This is why the named the controller Joy-"Con". It's a Con.

id expect it to be a collectors edition for that price. but for a standard edition in this day and age.. ridiculous to expect people to pay 60

EddieNX 3073d ago

Suicidal price. Dunno what they're thinking. £50 would be ok

blady_man3073d ago

Even so, i pay at the moment £40 to £45 max for games!!!

CDbiggen3073d ago

I bought final fantasy xv, a game that wouldn't even run on switch, for £38 in tesco, on day one. £60 is obscene.

3072d ago
Muzikguy3072d ago

When did they Nvidia say this? As far as I can tell, the Switch can't even handle last gen games. Just look at the upcoming Skyrim

SoulWarrior3072d ago

No not even 50, you can get the vast majority of new AAA releases for £35-40 on consoles, this is just utter lunacy.

Summons753073d ago

eye-watering aka the average game price that shouldn't be a shock to anyone really...

Genuine-User3073d ago (Edited 3073d ago )

The average game price in the U.K. is £40.

Nintendo is trying to sell a standard edition Zelda for £60 and I find that disgusting.

PapaBop3073d ago

I've never paid £60 for a game ever, the most was 55 back in the early days of the X1 and PS4 and now you rarely pay more than 45.

Lighter93073d ago

I paid $80 for Super Metroid day one.

Fyflin3073d ago

Turok: Dinosaur Hunter was £70 back when the N64 launched. Nintendo's own games like Mario 64 were all £60 at launch too, although the huge prices were put down to cartridge costs at the time.

To be fair, digital copies of EA games (Battlefield etc) are normally £55 on xbox live/PSN. Still, it's crazy.

RosweeSon3073d ago

Your lucky you missed the 90's paid £59.99 for goldeneye back in the day worth every penny but still n64 games were pricey as fook.

Liqu1d3073d ago

£60 is not the average game price. £50 is the RRP for most games but they are usually sold for £40-45.

DashArrivals3073d ago

Geez the defence is Strong in you my child. How can you defend this? How does it feel knowing the Switch will flop?

-Foxtrot3073d ago

I'm paying £64.99 for a Horizon Zero Dawn Limited Edition

The Game

A Steelbook

A small artbook

DLC

A PS4 Theme

For £4.99 more

I just don't understand how Nintendo can be this out of touch with modern day gaming.

superchiller3073d ago

Agreed. But there is a simple answer to the high cost of Switch games: greed. Nintendo is trying to extract the maximum possible amount of money from their loyal fans. They've been doing this for many years, it shouldn't come as a surprise.

King_Lothric3073d ago

Nintendo suddenly feels like Apple and their products.

DashArrivals3073d ago

I'm just dumbstruck at the whole thing. Needing a smart phone app that unlocks behind a paywall, in order to party chat while you play on the Switch. What about kids who just don't own a smart phone? Heck, when I play on PS4, I never use my smart phone for anything PS4 related even though the app is FREE. In 2017, a console should be able to do all these things without the need for a smart phone app. It should be optional. Nitendo have shit the bed in such an epic way.

MRMagoo1233072d ago

I've used the psn app to message a few times when I can't get to the ps4 while I'm out but that's about it, not something I'd pay for so.......Nintendo being Nintendo really

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild's Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Won't Include the DLC

IGN: "Amid continued frustration and confusion from fans about how much the Nintendo Switch 2 and its games are going to cost them, we've learned that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild's Nintendo Switch 2 edition doesn't come with the Expansion Pass, meaning you'll have to pay an additional $20 to play the DLC on the new system."

Nintendo (Mr. Krabs): Hello, I like money

VersusDMC64d ago

I wonder if there will be a 90 bundle for it at launch. They might as well as there is still a pokemon scarlet + Dlc for 95 and no one cares.

https://www.nintendo.com/us...

Michiel198964d ago

that is just outright pathetic. Don't tell me its 90 + 20...that would be absurd

Tacoboto64d ago

It's not. It's $60 (base game) + $20 (DLC) + Whatever Upgrade Will Cost.

Not really different than Ghost of Tsushima + Iki Island + PS5 Upgrade

VersusDMC64d ago

The 70 dollar PS5 version of Ghost of Tsushima included the Iki Island DLC.

The 70 dollar Switch 2 version of Breath of the wild doesn't include the 20 dollar expansion pass.

Not the same.

Tacoboto64d ago

oh yeah great clarification and misleading as well - PS4 owners who bought the game day one as a $60 title had to spend $30 to get the PS5 upgrade because Sony only offered the "upgrade" as the Director's Cut

New players, yeah they got the PS5 version for $70, but PS4 players, nope, it was $90

Knushwood Butt63d ago (Edited 63d ago )

'So that leaves folks who don't own the game yet at all, but might want to purchase it on the Nintendo Switch 2. They can purchase a Nintendo Switch 2 Enhanced Edition of Breath of the Wild for $70, $10 more than the game initially retailed at (so basically the price of the original game and the pack). But it won't include the DLC Expansion Pack, so if you want access to that, it's another $20 on top of that. $90 total for the full Breath of the Wild Nintendo Switch 2 experience.'

I'm surprised there isn't a Switch 2 edition of the DLC that's $25. Which makes me wonder, if the DLC is just the same code as the OG Switch version, then does it just run out of the box on Switch 2?

VariantAEC59d ago

The PS5 version of Ghost of Tsushima is the "director's cut" for $70 which includes the PS5 upgrades and Iki Island DLC. The PS5 upgrade from PS4 which again includes DLC if you didn't already purchase the DLC separately is $20 and thusly makes the PS4 version of Ghost of Tsushima which originally retailed for and RRP of $60, $80 in total after upgrading to the PS5.
The PS4 to PS5 upgrade cost is total $80 if you aren't an idiot. Though, I'll outline the idiotic paths to burn your wallet below. The problem is that all pathways for new Switch 2 games cost as much as worst case scenarios or more than on other platforms, provided those players are at least of average intelligence.

Warning! Idiotic ways to burn money below, only the truest of MORONS would even attempt to blow their money by following them.
There are worse deals, you would need to buy the standalone Legends online game mode FIRST and then pay for the PS5 version of the game, which would cost you $90.
But, you could do even worse by buying the Legends online mode for either PS4 or PS5, FIRST, then buy the PS4 game for full price - all these years later somehow on a disc - forcing you to upgrade to the director's cut to be the least expensive path to get everything for $110.

Impossible money wasting options:
You'd need to buy the PS4 game, and the PS5 game both at full price - $130, then the DLC (which you can't buy now, it was $20), granting you access to Legends online, which you'll pay for separately anyway adds $20, and finally you will pay for the PS5 upgrade from the PS4 version for $20... even though you already have the PS5 game. Ultimately the burn your wallet path would cost $190 for just GoT not factoring in special editions (which like the standalone Iki Island DLC are no longer sold). So, it was possible to pay way more for GoT than Nintendo will charge players for BoTW or TotK, but only if you have severe mental retardation.

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 59d ago
Vits64d ago (Edited 64d ago )

BotW is going to be $70 (base game) + $20 (DLC) + $10 (Upgrade).
TotK is going to be $80 (base game) + $10 (Upgrade).

So both will be $90 for full experience.

--Onilink--64d ago

No, BotW base game is $60 and TotK is $70

Or in terms of the Switch 2 Editions (already with the upgrade), $70 for BotW and $80 for TotK

Yi-Long64d ago

No idea what’s going on with Nintendo and their messaging, but this is once again just a really bad look, no matter how you spin it …
