Sony has today announced that they sold through 6.2 million PlayStation 4 units throughout the 2016 holiday season. The PS4 has now sold 53.4 million units worldwide, an impressive amount. In the same period last year, Sony sold 5.7 million PlayStation 4s.

That's Sales a lot better than last year.

Playstation's 2016

It is now just under 54M sold. The 6.2M is sold through, not shipped.

More like PlayStation Planet.

What did I tell you....

My quote: "Thatguy-310

The people disagreeing with you is hilarious.

If the PS4 averages 1.3 million a month with the numbers already at 47.4, that would make the remaining 2.6. Since the Pro is about to launch along with November and December being the holiday shopping season, covering 2.6 million is not even of question in 2 months. It could very well achieve that in one month."

Thatguy-310 quote: "They're easily going to surpass 50 million by the end of the year. Can't wait to see how ps4 pro is received."

Whose laughing now? ☺

The lead is most certainly now slightly over a 2 to1 ratio. Microsoft probably sold near 3 million Xbox consoles in that same time frame. It's likely at a low 26 million and some change for Microsoft's system.

Major_Glitch2754d ago

This generation belongs to Sony.

_-EDMIX-_2754d ago

That actually means there's Millions more in circulation.

UltraNova2754d ago

To say Playstation is a success its actually selling it short... wow!

IamTylerDurden12753d ago

I expect 2017 to continue Sony's success due to the vast array of PS4 exclusives. I bet you Gravity Rush 2, Nioh, Horizon, Persona 5, KH 2.8, MLB The Show 17, and Nier will all be over 80 on Metacritic.

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen2753d ago

Well I predicted 55 million. Close, I suppose.

Deadpooled2753d ago

The PlayStation Universe!

showtimefolks2753d ago

I guess when they announced the original projection of 60 million by end of March they were quite serious

Releasing pro in 2016 was one of the smartest things Sony could have done. Absolutely no competition and by the time Scorpio comes out pro will be cheaper than it so the price advantage will favor ps4

By signing these marketing deals and depending on them to help sell ps4's in holiday seasons Sony has been able to allow much longer development time for their exclusives and now from 2017-2019 they are stacked up

PS4 dipped a little, but now it's back to to selling at a faster rate than PS2 in the same timeframe.

Congrats Sony

Lonnie182754d ago

That's interesting, where were ps2 sales and how big of alead does ps4 have?

PhoenixUp2754d ago (Edited 2754d ago )

@ Lonnie

PS2 sold 53.85 million in its first 39 months on the market.

PS4 sold 53.4 million in its first 37 months on the market.

PS4 does have a lead, but it's not that big a lead over PS2.

badboyz092754d ago

PS2 didn't really have any Competition.

Sunny_D2754d ago

Neither does the PS4. Atleast not until MAYBE the switch comes out.

lastking952754d ago (Edited 2754d ago )

Theres more gamers then in the ps2 era. Ps2 had no competition what so ever. Xbox and gamecube couldn't compete and ps2 dominated what?75%+ of the market share. XO already passed ogxbox entire life of sales and wii u put up gamecube numbers. Gaming is definitely in a healthy state.

OT congrats sony never would've thought ps2 would ever be surpassed but at this rate ps4 might do it. I think the only thing that would prevent it is the ps5 releasing too soon. However if the pro is forward compatible it will for sure.

thehitman13982754d ago

But phoenix, if u use the same stats and then factor the environment "the gaming world is in" then in fact, the ps4 is smashing the ps2.

Look back at the gaming environment back then, and look at the gaming environment now. For what the ps4 is doing, is hands down, EPIC

andrewsquall2753d ago

@badboyz09 3 years into its life WAS the time when PS2 had competition now. The Gamecube and Xbox were fairly established at that point. The competition was there but you are right, it wasn't really competition at all.

Kind of like the way it is with PS4 since November 2013 except the difference being Nintendo launched their "next gen" console a year before hand and the next gen Xbox console launched pretty much within the same 2 weeks of PS4 depending on what side of the world you were on. :) Which makes PS4 an even bigger juggernaut then.

2pacalypsenow2753d ago

Back in 2000-2005 there was only handheld, console and PC. in 2013- . There are Handhelds,Mobile,Consoles,PC, and even Tv's that can play games. The Ps4 sales are more impressive than PS2, Since PS2 came right after the Hot Ps1 it had the Hype, Ps4 came after the Ps3....

XanderZane2753d ago

Only question now is will it pass the Wii, PS1 or PS2 before the PS5 is released? Time will tell.

PS4 sales dipped because people were holding out for PS4 Pro. Some people would like to have you believe that the major impact was people jumping over to the Xbox One S but that's not exactly true now is it?

PhoenixUp2753d ago

@ Crazed

PS4 was on track to start selling slower than PS2 before the announcement of the Pro even happened.

PS4 was previously behind PS2 when Sony announced it sold 50 million on Dec 6, however thanks to selling an impressive 3+ million during December its currently ahead.

CrazedFiend2752d ago (Edited 2752d ago )

Didn't matter. By the time there was an official announcement, everybody already knew. For months.
