Pause Resume's Q1 2017 editorials continue with a look at the Destiny saga. From a leaked ‘First on Xbox’ contract in 2012, right through to the last expansion Rise of Iron that released just a few months ago.
As Destiny 2’s decade-long Light and Darkness saga comes to an end, experimenting with one new feature now feels more necessary than ever before.
In a world where Gambit thrived, Destiny 2’s seasons, storylines, and even its endgame might’ve revolved around PvEvP as a core foundation.
Destiny already has the pretty hyper 'raid' fixation and then they added legendary raid dungeons. Hyperfixating in PvEvP wouldn't work as well because you need a lot more than 2% of the userbase to keep that going unlike raids that are propped up by streamers who make running them their whole job. Most players don't play all the raids let alone run them over and over. And most who play PvP don't want structured PvE elements.
Destiny 2's Episode Heresy has done a lot of things right, but players have noticed an odd change that makes the endgame harder.
Their biggest issue imho is communication. With nothing said about Destiny 2 and nothing about content coming before it's release, players are again feeling the familiar anxiety that comes. Is it worth even playing anymore in nothing will carry over? Are raids gonna be updated for the spring or held for the sequel? Is it even releasing in 2017 and if not, is there any more content coming at all?
At times Bungie has been a bit better at communicating, but then at times, they completely disappear. The community is strong and loyal. Yes, they are fickle but can handle whatever news is coming. Here's a crazy idea, how about including fans in the development of Destiny 2?
This games needs a return to its orginal vision. Id love to see a third person option for the game, I really dont care about PVP , so Id like to see less focus on that and more story content actually in game and less girmore.
Destiny 2 has a chance to get it right from the jump here is hoping.
I stopped playing when The Dark Below first released because I already saw where the game was going, and I was right. I liked the Beta, but the full game was lacking. I know a lot of die hards will argue "it's a good game," well it is depending on what kind of player you are.
Bungie lost a customer with how short the game is, the lies, and how they let Activision call the shots at the end of the day.
Destiny was a very good game, but unfortunately never quite reached the great potential it had. With the expansions, either they couldn't make up their mind or just for marketing reasons, they do 4 expansions...1 very short one, then a slightly longer one, and both left many customers feeling ripped off for what little content they got. Then TTK which was finally a decent sized expansion, followed by Rise of Iron which went back to 2 hours of content for $30 that alienated customers.
Also, Bungie was stubborn as could be and refused to listen to customers regarding in-game mm for end-game content. So unless you knew 4-5 friends who also played Destiny, at the same time, on the same platform, with the same expansions, you had to go external to the game to grovel, beg, and plead your case to hope for a chance to go along on a raid. Everyone hated that and Bungie never did resolve it.
The game itself as far as the graphics, the pvp, the combat, at times the story, etc. were all very good. It's just sad that if not for a few flaws it could have been amazing.
