Video and audiophiles will love this. Great job.

_LarZen_3114d ago

But then again I cant see enthusiasts who have invested in an expensive Dolby Atmos setup to be excited about a low end device like the Xbox One S for watching movies.

freshslicepizza3114d ago

why? millions bought a ps3 for a bluray player even though more expensive players were out there.

Goldby3114d ago

Hmm lets see moldy, maybe because sony pioneerered blu ray tech and the blu ray player in the ps3 was on par if not better than most hd drives out there, including hd dvd

yeahright23114d ago

@ moldy in a word, streaming. those millions were made up of mostly casual movie watchers, not the enthusiasts. Since then streaming has picked up significantly and that's how most are watching their movies now. So that leaves mainly the enthusiasts who want the best, so they won't really go for an xbox 1 for that purpose and the ones that do won't be enough to make up the DVD buyers from PS2 and bluray buyers from PS3 days. And with 4k not taking over just yet, by the time it does, streaming will be the main way we consume 4K media, so consoles, and dedicated players won't have as strong a foot hold.

Garfield, can tell if serious or just...

Anyway, great job Microsoft. Having the XB1S is paying off in my home theater setup.

chrisoadamson3113d ago

Hahayou mention low end device and then leaf out the fact to movies to which your refer the Xbox one s. Has the 4k video and now the best sound available. Clearly trolling .

Yes they will but lets be honest here, do they really depend on a console or their high end home cinema setups for the latest and greatest in audio/video? They are called video/audiophiles for a reason right?

Edit:

@Guys bellow

Guys I never said that to be interested in audio/video you have to be an audio/videophile. Of course normal people can appreciate and enjoy this tech as well, provided they have enough cash of course.

TankCrossing3114d ago (Edited 3114d ago )

They are called audiophiles because of their interest in audio, not because they have unlimited money.

81BX3114d ago

@ultranova
Thats kinda like saying vr enthusiats wouldnt choose psvr or samsung gear vr because the pc counter parts are available with better machines... sure if you could, you would but not everyone has the money or really cares

I just have bought a Dolby Atmos and DTS:X capable AVR and I am really excited that my Xbox One S does support Atmos and mybe soon DTS:X now. The support of real bitsream comes in handy in general as also DTS-HD finally will be decoded by my AVR.
I am really happy about the feature and I will test it before I consider an other UHD Blue-Ray player, since the One S may suffice :)

Will the developers for games utilise the Atmos features, or will it only support 5.1 still? If so, that is pretty awesome.

P.S. I can see they have it mind, but wondering if the audio had been mixed to possibly support this feature in the future (now).

Stogz3114d ago

It'd be awesome if they did but I doubt it since the format is very new for home use and very expensive to set up right. Even most blu rays don't support it. I certainly hope that changes and the price for the setup goes down cuz I love Atmos in theaters.

Krangs_Uncle3114d ago

Indeed man.. I have a Denon AVR-4200W with Q Acoustics 7000i speakers.. I have been itching for more Dolby Atmos content to be introduced. Still in its infancy for home use.

shiva13114d ago

No offence: Did u read the article.

KillBill3114d ago (Edited 3114d ago )

If nothing else I believe this and the Scorpio Specs over-all are going to push for MS to put out more first party games that will have added benefits like this to tout for their Scorpio upgraded versions of the game. Which in turn can help push 3rd party support to follow suit. Not a bad thing.

Edit: MS is known for keeping their cards a bit closer to their chest when it comes to game releases and announcements. Not 'usually' announcing games as far out as their competitors. So imagine release period of Scorpio and later to 2018 we could see some titles appearing that we might not have expected, maybe?

TankCrossing3114d ago

Isn't Atmos already available on Battlefront and Battlefield 1 on both PC and PS4?

Gwynbleidd3114d ago

I am not sure about that. Atmos and other codecs via audio stream from a blue-ray to the Xbox previously got crippled by the fact that the Xbox does the decoding and even in bitstream it has not been the loss-less passthrough of the signal to the AVR. Since the AVR is the more sophisticated machine for such tasks the Xbox obviously delivered not the same audio quality or the original speaker distribution.
As I understand the new feature, it simply adds the capability of delivering a loss-less passthrough to the AVR.

For games I think it is a different story. Games generate the sound on input basis by the player of what happens on screen. It is no simple audio stream that needs to be decoded. So I would think the console has to generate the game sound on the fly, since it is built into the game engine. I don't know if that is made with an Atmos codec? I would think you don't need a codec since the consoles doesn't need to encode the sound as it is generated "live"... Maybe the sound is generated for an Atmos speaker pattern (5.1.2) if you choose it in the settings?

MasterCornholio3114d ago

That's good news for people who have high end audio systems.

TankCrossing3114d ago (Edited 3114d ago )

Ohhhhhh controversial.

shiva13114d ago

(You will need a Dolby Atmos-supported speaker system or soundbar to hear the benefits. Alternatively, it will work with "virtually any pair of headphones," Hooks said.)

Read that last line. And i hope @tankcrossing made that comment cause u din read i guess.

MasterCornholio3114d ago

"This feature enables all Xbox consoles to pass Blu-ray audio data untouched to a user's audio equipment, allowing your audio receiver or other audio device to produce a high quality, immersive sound experience,"

I was making a reference to this comment. That's why people with high end audio systems are going to like this alot.

Tussin1873114d ago

Yes it is. Hopefully, Sony follows suit with the PS4. I really think all these companies need to focus more on sound tech. I mean they focus so much on the looks and if that much effort was put into sound then that would take these games on another level. And I'm not just talking sound effects but music as well. Sound is really an important part of pulling you in the experience. I don't know how many movies I've watched and the sound/music have made me like the movie even more. It's really that powerful. Well, at least for me.
