Is it time to reevaluate how we treat scores for AAA games? Gamemoir's Nick D. doesn't think so.

All games be held to the same standard based on a gray area that is Baseline and agreed on. When you're holding something to a higher standard you are either holding it to a level higher than the standard or creating a new one.

Actually the metacritic of FFXV drop even further to 83 you are saying that 8 must be considered a good score for a game but a main FF game is not *any* game, in case you weren't around during the PS1 days back then every new FF was an instant 9+ only the past years this change, I would put below the 'user' meta-score of each main FF because many agree that professional reviewers can't be trusted & most of the times their review doesn't make any sense, for example it often happen a game site to score an amazing game much lower than what they gave to a much worse game in the past, & in the end f*ck critics, how the actual players & fans feel about a game is the only thing you can take seriously imo so here we go:

FFVII: 9.2
FFVIII: 8.6
FFIX: 8.9
FFX: 8.7
FFXII: 7.6
FFXIII: 7.3
FFXV: 7.9

What do we see here? we see that FFVII have above 9 & every other FF up to FFX have close to 9, what happen after FFX? the user meta-score of main FF games drop below 8, is that a coincidence by you? FF fans keep on saying for more than a decade now that after FFX the series is not the same anymore, the quality drop by a lot & the usual awesome feeling every new main FF used to have cease to exist in newer installments, that's the only undeniable truth here, that FF used to be good until X, after that it start to suck & the series stop remind an FF anymore, anything else those critics who put those 9's & 10's say doesn't matter because as I said 95% of them can't be trusted, they either got payed to give those good scores or their taste simple suck, THE END.

You've proved two standpoints, the critics and your own, while also implying another in the background, that no matter the critique, and opinion is an opinion, and that my friend, is based on your own standards, and the standards, of everyone and anyone, has undoubtedly evolved and become much higher than before, hence the decline in a sufficient degree/sense of satisfaction of-in particular- ff games as of late...lets take the topic of open worlds as an example, in the 8-bit and 16-bit era, heck even around the time of the ps1 and ps2, creating an open world that appealed to the then current standards was more convenient as less demanding as at that time open worlds were simply land to cross, i.e there was no need to include side quests or (graphics-wise) a variety of different assets that gave you a sense of a living, breathing open-world that had an aesthetic similar to our world but with creative and fantastical imagery. as technology advanced, such open-worlds became more prominent and with each new game that dares to push the line and succeeds (for example ff7 or tw3), the standards are set higher for newer games to be better than that. With final fantasy, technology advancements helped the games graphically, but at this and earlier stages, the games cant reach the scale/size of the open worlds of the older games and that is a let down for some...point being here, people set their standards too high and are disappointed by unfulfillment

Irishguy953111d ago

You're also gonna have to face the fact that Final fantasy didn't face much competition back then. Especially on consoles!

FF actually is just another game.

Every FF game is different. Different battle system, different story, different characters, different themes and presentations(mostly), so comparing them, and saying it's not as good because it differs from prior games is completely unethical.

FF should be held to whatever review standards are in place at a particular publication at the time of the review. Giving it higher or lower scores because it doesn't live up to some arbitrary merit placed on it by other games in the series is not a equitable way to review an individual game.

It is worth comparing it to other games in the franchise for the purpose of informing the potential customers what to expect in comparison to other games, but it has to be taken as it's own thing.

datriax3111d ago

FF XV is a AAA game? Huh. Fooled me. Here I thought it was a tech demo for a new engine or something. You mean, there's actually game play in this thing?

Nara_shikamaru3111d ago

I have deduced one thing from your petty delusions: you are delusional...you see, you are the type to only acknowledge the negatives and focus on that, lol its like you are colour- blind, if the negatives in life was the colour grey, thats all you would see

Kreisen3111d ago

I think if the game had a more interesting world to explore, focused a bit more on actual monster hunting with a proper crafting system to boot this would easily be in my top 3 rpgs this gen.

Six Times When Games Turned Into A Horror Game

Ever play a game a game only to discover at some point it transforms into a horror game? No? Well Netto's Game Room shares six games that do just that!

Immediately thought of the El Dorado zombie dudes in Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune.

raWfodog45d ago (Edited 45d ago )

Not necessarily a ‘horror’ moment, but I remember feeling really tense and anxious when the Flood were first introduced in the original Halo. I never felt more on edge or nervous in that whole game as that moment. I think it was the whole buildup that something terrible was coming but you didn’t know exactly what.

Another non-horror game that had me feeling it was Subnautica. The deep dark depths, and knowing that sea monsters were lurking nearby, had me jumping at every sound.

That scene where you first see them attack is pretty crazy!

I remember being scared of the Asylum level in the most recent Thief game from 2014.

always liked 15, but the development was shch a shitshow. it could have been so much more.

but Tabata did a good job with what he had regardless

Ff15 was a missed opportunity from square as they transitioned from turn based to real time.

One of the issues is that it was 30 fps. The combat mechanics required precision dodges to activate Noctis teleport ability and it was difficult to do at 30 fps. I am glad they rectified that in FF16. The story and flow also felt like it went through a chopshop similar to how some live service games end up when they are trying to meet a deadline. Those extra episodes they sold as dlc should have been in the maingame.

FF15 is one of the weaker entries in the series.

Z501178d ago

Dodges don't activate the teleport ability. Teleport was R1 + O. Dodge was just the O button. Explain the Black Hood (the item that automatically Dodges for you)

TheNamelessOne179d ago

Ah yes; FF XV.
The beginning of me coming to the realization the series was no longer for me.

Michiel1989178d ago

16 was a lot better, I think 15 was just a big mess with how development went and all. The music though, one of the best in the series, probably the only reason I finished the game.

Cacabunga178d ago

At least FF15 had RPG elements . 16 was just an action game from beginning to end.

Michiel1989178d ago

I rather have a good action game than a bad rpg with 2 button combat

Cacabunga178d ago (Edited 178d ago )

Then call it something else then FF. I got scammed with FF16. Nothing of what i expected it to be.
Even the action is bad in it, especially after the demo section where absolutely nothing happens until the very end.

FF15 isnt a great game but it has some variety at least.

CrimsonWing69179d ago

That initial trailer with the Leviathan fight was the game I wish we got. The actual retail release was watchdogged to all Hell and while there’s enjoyment to be had in the game, it’s such an incomplete product and so many elements feel so slapped together without any cohesion.

Like, don’t get me wrong, I loved fishing, cooking, and the first third of the game, but I much rather they made a story that didn’t feel barely there and the the last third of the game didn’t feel so rushed and unfinished.

Becuzisaid178d ago

Every time a party member left for a period of time screamed future paid dlc. It was horrible.

Imagine Dagger and Steiner making the party go to sleep in Lindblum in FF9 disc 1 and then taking off to Alexandria by foot themselves, but then never playing their side of the adventure in disc 2 when they smuggle her through the South Gate in pickles, take the cable car and fight the Waltz, head to Treno and start the quest to find Supersoft. They just eventually reunite with the main party in the future without explanation of what went on in their adventure.

Or Sephiroth's backstory in the famous Kalm flashback being added as a dlc pack. Same goes for Vincent, Cid, or Yuffie for that matter.

Oh and anything to do with Jenova, the Ancients, Aerith, her mom and Gast, shoved into a 2 hour CG movie or 5 hour anime ministries that's considered required viewing for anything in the main game to make sense or have characters actually be interesting.

I enjoyed FF15 at the time, and finished it, but it's bright spots are marred by a bad development cycle and a worse marketing scheme.

CrimsonWing69178d ago

What’s sad is when I watched a vid on the entire story (that wasn’t properly told in the actual game)!it was really solid and could’ve been one of the most epic stories in any FF. I think a lot of the compilation and cross-media stuff really f*cked it all up.

gurp179d ago

FFXV was underrated in my opinion
I have played all of the final fantasy games, and I loved this game
turn based to me takes too long, I like active battle
the extra dlc and chapters should have been included in the original release, but it is nice that they fixed the game later

Glad that I absolutely can't stand subscription services.

Petebloodyonion431d ago (Edited 431d ago )

I don't recall Sony forcing you to subscribe like nobody forced you to go to Blockbuster to rent games instead of buying them.

SonyStyled431d ago

Pay-per-view was almost cheaper than the cost of gas and rental fee from Blockbuster. Blockbuster doesn’t exist today. Are you being sarcastic?
