Why Final Fantasy XV is Probably My Game of The Year

Alex has put 20 hours into Final Fantasy XV and countless into previous entries throughout his life. Here are his impressions after going into the open world, with an open mind.

Are you delusional? Have you played some of the side quest? Theyre shallow as fuck and feell like youre playing a cheap Korean mmo.

kraenk123114d ago (Edited 3113d ago )

So like Dragon Age Inquisition which won several GOTY awards?! (Not saying it deserved one though)

MyDietEqualsGames3113d ago

This game is better than DA though. I got bored of DA very fast. This game, I am going to cross 100 hours soon. I want the platinum. FFXIII can burn for eternity. FF Redeemed, AFAIAC.

kingdomtriggers3114d ago

The optional dungeons are the best optional dungeons I've played in an RPG in years. The Hunts are addictive.

MyDietEqualsGames3113d ago

I like how they took varied approaches to the dungeons. The most insane though... sheesh. I'm still on it. You may know which I am talking about. (Kappa)

Irishguy953114d ago

I could say that about the Majority of every open world games quests. Have you ever played XenoBlade? Skyrim? The Witcher?

They all have some great quests. But are mostly filled with fetch quests. Not to say all fetch quests are bad. You just, need to pick the right ones.

kraenk123113d ago

Are you sure you played The Witcher games?! Because especially 3 didn't have many fetch quests at all. The side quests were some of the best quests in the game and very varied.

Irishguy953113d ago (Edited 3113d ago )

The witcher games all have their fair share of fetch quests. Just because you choose to ignore them and pick the good quests doesn't mean they aren't there.

And yes, Witcher 3 was my GotY last year, and yes the side quests...some of them, are amazing.

Silkside3113d ago

The witcher had amazing side quest.

I remember in final fantasy I walked up to a guy who's car had broken down, literally allbye said was "well I can't walk all the way back to town" than the game told me to go get a repair kit.... The dialogue and quest objective was apathetic.

Why even make a quest like this at all.

_-EDMIX-_3113d ago

Agreed I've enjoyed many side quest of games even knowing of their repetition simply because I've yet to play a game in which every single last side quest was somehow unique to the story or gave some sort of personal experience.

So until someone crafts such a complex game I can't really talk crap about any games fetch Quest considering I don't even have an example of it being done the way a lots of people assume it should or could be done.

What's some games having literally over 100 Side West I'm not entirely sure we can have any game in which every single last side quest is this mini game meta experience because we might be talking about a game that's almost impossible to either make or get a return on in regards to funds.

I mean improbable anyway.

That's basically like saying we had a game where 100 of the side quest had 100 different activities that were all different from the last, even the Mario party games in regards to their mini games all have some sort of pattern lol

I never mind such Quest and RPGs simply because I've yet to really come across any RPG that has ever done every side quest as something different or unique.

Eiyuuou3113d ago

Xenoblade Chronicles X's sidequest were a real hell sometimes... "Go gather material X". That's it. Not even a clue of where to get it.

And if they did give a location, chances were that it wasn't on the map.

"Why Final Fantasy XV is Probably My Game of the Year"

The author is (a) explaining their opinion, hence "why", (b) telling us that they enjoyed the game, but have enjoyed other games this year, hence "probably", and (c) not making a case for it to be THE game of the year, but theirs, hence "my".

What exactly is delusional about them enjoying the game and having it potentially be the best game they've played? Because you didn't like the side quests?

Well, okay then...

Omnislashver363113d ago

What exactly is delusional about critiquing the game's sidequests as fetchquests either? Your bias is showing.

DarXyde3113d ago (Edited 3113d ago )

What's delusional about it? Nothing. Nothing at all. Is that what you took away from my comment?

It's one thing to disagree with someone; I encourage diversity of thought. To call someone delusional? That would be disagreeing while personally attacking someone for their opinion. I didn't attack Silkside. By writing, "well, okay then...", I'm pretty obviously suggesting I disagree, but to each their own.

I encourage you to read my comments more carefully next time. You read something that wasn't there.

shauzy3113d ago

the hunts compensate though

I'm about 28 hours in and I could see how somebody might consider this their favorite game this year.

kraenk123114d ago

Just the art is so incredible in parts that I can understand why some might feel this way.

Razzer3113d ago

everything is gorgeous, isn't it?

Razzer3114d ago

I agree. 20 hours in myself. Absolutely love the combat and the ascension system. The characters have really grown on me as well. Excellent voice acting for the most part.

_-EDMIX-_3114d ago

Even 28 hours and I'm learning new things about the combat and I love using the wait system to let me decide what weapons and approach I'm going to take in defeating an enemy while paused.

Razzer3114d ago (Edited 3113d ago )

Yep. The wait system is gold!

CommanderDATA3114d ago

And as a fan of quality JRPGs, its a big deal to play a big budget one because we have been severly lacking in that department for a long time now. When compared to the glory days ofcourse.

amazinglover3114d ago

20 hours in myself and still on chapter 3 so yeah I would say i am enjoying it.

Skankinruby3114d ago

That makes me feel better. I'm not used to rpg's and I'm on chapter 3 trying to figure out how the hell to move forward. 6 hours in for me

Tankbusta403114d ago

I enjoy, the game, I am 40 hours in and only have chapter 14 and the epilogue to complete. For most of my time I loved the experience, but the last couple of hours have felt like a slog. No doubt a wonderful game, but I highly doubt I am going to attempt end game content after I beat it for awhile. Need a break

Steveoreno13113d ago

What am I missing? I'm 15 hrs in and hate the camera, clunky battle system, quests, driving and running everywhere. My only pro so far is the awesome creature models.

KimikoGaming3114d ago

Great game, probably my favorite main series FF game since 10 other than Crisis Core. Definitely one of my favorite games this year alongside Pokemon Sun/Moon, Dark Souls 3, and Uncharted 4.

Six Times When Games Turned Into A Horror Game

Ever play a game a game only to discover at some point it transforms into a horror game? No? Well Netto's Game Room shares six games that do just that!

Immediately thought of the El Dorado zombie dudes in Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune.

raWfodog43d ago (Edited 43d ago )

Not necessarily a ‘horror’ moment, but I remember feeling really tense and anxious when the Flood were first introduced in the original Halo. I never felt more on edge or nervous in that whole game as that moment. I think it was the whole buildup that something terrible was coming but you didn’t know exactly what.

Another non-horror game that had me feeling it was Subnautica. The deep dark depths, and knowing that sea monsters were lurking nearby, had me jumping at every sound.

NettosGameRoom43d ago

That scene where you first see them attack is pretty crazy!

Relientk7743d ago

I remember being scared of the Asylum level in the most recent Thief game from 2014.

always liked 15, but the development was shch a shitshow. it could have been so much more.

but Tabata did a good job with what he had regardless

DivineHand125178d ago

Ff15 was a missed opportunity from square as they transitioned from turn based to real time.

One of the issues is that it was 30 fps. The combat mechanics required precision dodges to activate Noctis teleport ability and it was difficult to do at 30 fps. I am glad they rectified that in FF16. The story and flow also felt like it went through a chopshop similar to how some live service games end up when they are trying to meet a deadline. Those extra episodes they sold as dlc should have been in the maingame.

FF15 is one of the weaker entries in the series.

Z501177d ago

Dodges don't activate the teleport ability. Teleport was R1 + O. Dodge was just the O button. Explain the Black Hood (the item that automatically Dodges for you)

TheNamelessOne178d ago

Ah yes; FF XV.
The beginning of me coming to the realization the series was no longer for me.

Michiel1989177d ago

16 was a lot better, I think 15 was just a big mess with how development went and all. The music though, one of the best in the series, probably the only reason I finished the game.

Cacabunga177d ago

At least FF15 had RPG elements . 16 was just an action game from beginning to end.

Michiel1989177d ago

I rather have a good action game than a bad rpg with 2 button combat

Cacabunga177d ago (Edited 177d ago )

Then call it something else then FF. I got scammed with FF16. Nothing of what i expected it to be.
Even the action is bad in it, especially after the demo section where absolutely nothing happens until the very end.

FF15 isnt a great game but it has some variety at least.

CrimsonWing69178d ago

That initial trailer with the Leviathan fight was the game I wish we got. The actual retail release was watchdogged to all Hell and while there’s enjoyment to be had in the game, it’s such an incomplete product and so many elements feel so slapped together without any cohesion.

Like, don’t get me wrong, I loved fishing, cooking, and the first third of the game, but I much rather they made a story that didn’t feel barely there and the the last third of the game didn’t feel so rushed and unfinished.

Becuzisaid177d ago

Every time a party member left for a period of time screamed future paid dlc. It was horrible.

Imagine Dagger and Steiner making the party go to sleep in Lindblum in FF9 disc 1 and then taking off to Alexandria by foot themselves, but then never playing their side of the adventure in disc 2 when they smuggle her through the South Gate in pickles, take the cable car and fight the Waltz, head to Treno and start the quest to find Supersoft. They just eventually reunite with the main party in the future without explanation of what went on in their adventure.

Or Sephiroth's backstory in the famous Kalm flashback being added as a dlc pack. Same goes for Vincent, Cid, or Yuffie for that matter.

Oh and anything to do with Jenova, the Ancients, Aerith, her mom and Gast, shoved into a 2 hour CG movie or 5 hour anime ministries that's considered required viewing for anything in the main game to make sense or have characters actually be interesting.

I enjoyed FF15 at the time, and finished it, but it's bright spots are marred by a bad development cycle and a worse marketing scheme.

CrimsonWing69177d ago

What’s sad is when I watched a vid on the entire story (that wasn’t properly told in the actual game)!it was really solid and could’ve been one of the most epic stories in any FF. I think a lot of the compilation and cross-media stuff really f*cked it all up.

gurp178d ago

FFXV was underrated in my opinion
I have played all of the final fantasy games, and I loved this game
turn based to me takes too long, I like active battle
the extra dlc and chapters should have been included in the original release, but it is nice that they fixed the game later

Glad that I absolutely can't stand subscription services.

Petebloodyonion430d ago (Edited 430d ago )

I don't recall Sony forcing you to subscribe like nobody forced you to go to Blockbuster to rent games instead of buying them.

SonyStyled429d ago

Pay-per-view was almost cheaper than the cost of gas and rental fee from Blockbuster. Blockbuster doesn’t exist today. Are you being sarcastic?
