It's one man's journey through a stack of games a mile high, as he tries to conquer his dreaded backlog. This time, it's 2014's Heavy Bullets, a first-person shooter roguelike that tasks you with shutting down a rampant security system, battling your way through waves of enemies with only your trusty revolver and a few heavy bullets.
Amidst the many games released in 2014, it’s more than likely many of us have had to hold off or have even completely missed out on some of the hidden gems. From horror games to narrative experiences, here are seven indie games that definitely shouldn’t be missed.
From the review: "Heavy Bullets encourages smart, slow, and steady tactics instead of jumping in and unloading in every room. It lets you be a bad ass one man army, while still keeping you struggling and hungry for more. Outside of a few ergonomic missteps, especially with the controller integration, it delivers an intense and immersive experience that rivals a lot of AAA FPS titles."
"Although I enjoyed the idea and aesthetic behind Heavy Bullets, I couldn’t find myself getting excited to start the next run every time I died. Difficulties aside, for a simple game with such little forgiveness, I felt it needed to be a bit tighter. For example, enemies would sometimes go straight through a corner or a wall to attack me, which was obviously not intended.
I liked that the levels and enemies were randomly generated, but I found there was still something left to be desired. Perhaps the game could have benefited from more enemies, events, discoveries, or more unique items. The neon charm was always a pleasure to play through, but overall I felt Heavy Bullets wore thin over time. If you’re a huge fan of rogue-like dungeon crawlers it’s worth a shot, but not six bullets."
