79% of UK Final Fantasy XV sales were on PS4, 21% Xbox One

Almost four out of every five physical launch copies sold on PS4.

So the distribution is 4:1. Its really interesting to see how much of a lock PlayStation has on that market.
If the next FF was a PS4 exclusive, would Xbox gamers even care.

Lennoxb633111d ago (Edited 3111d ago )

Yes, I would care.

@DemonChicken
"the consoles attracts other genres hence gives weight to why there are lack of jrpgs on the system, i.e. low returns for the time spent porting the a xbox one version."

But FFXV sold more on Xbox than ANY turn based JRPG game ever would. That's enough. I don't see anyone complaining when Sony supports games that struggle to sell 100,000 units in its lifetime. Just because more diverse games sell more on PS, doesn't mean those games are all that successful.

poppinslops3111d ago

The game sold over 5 million copies in two days, so if these percentages can be extrapolated on a worldwide scale, then that's at least 1 million xbox versions of FFXV - more than enough to justify it's multiplat status... If these figures are legit, then I 'd be willing to bet on the FFVII remake coming to xbox as well.

DemonChicken3111d ago (Edited 3111d ago )

But the majority doesn't (can see number of people asking for kh remasters for the xbox on the official twitter accounts but of course the minority) and the consoles attracts other genres hence gives weight to why there are lack of jrpgs on the system, i.e. low returns for the time spent porting the a xbox one version.

It's business at the end of the day, rather spend resources on items that sell more then do another job which gives low returns and higher cost where the time could have been better spent on the version that sells to increase the quality hence saleability. This is especially the case for the smaller companies or games with lower budgets.

poppinslops3111d ago

Money is money, and SE are some mercenary bastards... say what you like about demographics and userbase - FFXV is a multiplat, as is KHIII, as will be the FFVII remake.

Eonjay3111d ago

@poppinslops

The distribution you noted is possible but only if UK numbers hold up worldwide (and they probably wont). Give it time though, What any good company does is make sure the allocation matches the preorders... and this can get down to the store level. So for example if there is a store in a town with mostly Xbox gamers, you could in theory have a situation where they will ship more Xbox versions to that store than PS4 copies. Of course, more than likely that situation is reversed for most areas.

So the best way to think about it would be to say that in the UK, they shipped 75% PS4 copies and 25% Xbox One copies and that would make sense. In Japan, it would be more like 90-95% PS4 copies just from sheer difference in install bases.

So, I would predict at least a healthy 500-650k for Xbox. Is that worth the cost of development... well sure it can be, but only if Square manages to cut the next development cycles drastically from 10 years to maybe 3 lol.

For Kingdom Hearts, I think its dumb for Square to release 3 on Xbox and not offer them 1.5 and 2.5 like on PS4 (and I say this not knowing if Sony had a hand in the exclusive deal). This only encourages folks to get 3 on PS4. Consider what Microsoft and Sony did with Halo and Uncharted... you get people the whole set.

poppinslops3111d ago

Even if that is the case, 500-650 thousand copies in 2 DAYS still makes it the fastest-selling JRPG in xbox history... SE crunched the numbers and deemed these games worthy of a multiplatform release - unlike Star Ocean 5, World of Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest Builders and other 'niche' titles, which would have flopped.

Eonjay3111d ago

@poppinslops

"Even if that is the case, 500-650 thousand copies in 2 DAYS still makes it the fastest-selling JRPG in xbox"

Well that certainly can not be denied.

DarXyde3111d ago

Poppinslops,

"The game sold over 5 million copies in two days, so if these percentages can be extrapolated on a worldwide scale, then that's at least 1 million xbox versions of FFXV - more than enough to justify it's multiplat status.."

At least a million is traditionally the case, but that's like saying if GTA V sold at least a million it would be fine. You need to consider the budget of the game.

Given the development time, it's possible that neither version has returned a profit yet.

When you don't make returns on a game, I believe that's known as a commercial failure. Too early to say, but it doesn't matter because Final Fantasy isn't going to suddenly become PlayStation exclusive. Now if the consoles were vastly different in development process, they might consider that route but it'd be silly not to if they are as similar as they are.

poppinslops3111d ago

If the game is yet to turn a profit then a multiplatform release is a no-brainer - porting the game wouldn't have cost a fraction of it's total production and considering the fact that SE are yet to announce a PC version, I'm guessing they're happy with FFXV's performance... Christmas is coming and it's already on it's way to becoming the best-selling game in the series!

MyDietEqualsGames3111d ago

Do you guys actually think 1 or even 3 mil is good for this specific game? The game that TRANSFORMED into FFXV because the damned thing was gonna overlap generations?

This game needs to sell 4-5mil on Xbox One. I already read shit about how they need to sell around 10mil copies of this game for it to be comfortably profitable. they did a ton of advertising for this game and tons of events promoting it too. So right there, that is more costs on top of development hell for damned near 10 years if not that.

Overload3111d ago (Edited 3111d ago )

FF7R is not going to be on Xbox One.

After the first year, every single game from SE Japan has been PS exclusive (DQ, DQB, Nier, I am Setsuna and a few others). From what I know, if they could reverse KH3 being on Xbox One they would. Which makes sense considering all the extra games releasing around KH are PS exclusive.

You guys played yourselves.

poppinslops3111d ago (Edited 3110d ago )

@Overload: "FF7R is not going to be on Xbox One"

You wanna bet? Whichever of us is wrong quits N4G for good... deal?

Edit: Well? Are you gonna stand behind your words, or do you lack the courage of your conviction?

S2Killinit3111d ago

The question is why would a game not sell on xbox when its selling on another platform.

_-EDMIX-_3111d ago (Edited 3111d ago )

@pop- no.

You don't actually know the cost of Final Fantasy 15 development and marketing for that case to actually suggest that 1 million sales of Final Fantasy 15 justify its existence on another platform.

I mean technically you can't even come to that conclusion because you don't even know how much it cost them to have multi-platform development in the first place.

If the sales for Final Fantasy 15 on Xbox One do not raise to a significant degree don't be surprised if Square goes back to having Final Fantasy on a single platform and cut their losses mind you they would be correct to do so if it's costing them more money than it's actually worth.

Buddy just get a PlayStation 4 I'm sorry but if you're a fan of Japanese RPGs I see no reason to cross your fingers begging and praying that some of these games come to Xbox because it's a very tough Market and I definitely see Square considering going back to a single platform because they are very conservative this generation.

Where is world of Final Fantasy on Xbox? Where's Final Fantasy 10 or 12 on Xbox? Where's the Kingdom Hearts Collection on Xbox? Where's I am setsuna on Xbox? Are you seriously telling me you're risking losing a bunch of Japanese RPGs just to have a controller with an X in front of it?

I feel like this is the same thing that happened with 13, yet here we are with a multi platform 15

@Demon

Exactly. Instead of catering to a lowest common denominator they could flesh out their game and realize the potential of the system it's on. I feel like too many companies dumb things down for multi platform releases and then their original vision of the game suffers. Sales do too and more importantly the series takes a credibility hit.

MyDietEqualsGames3111d ago

I didn't disagree or agree, but I will say this:

It's gotten much better. How do I know? I used to complain about that exact same thing. But it was warranted! Because that was exactly the case! Also, that is how we understand that Parity shit Microsoft had going, today and anything resembling such business practice speaks volumes about what you think about your product.

If anything, and this is deviating from the topic a bit, but I do think Xbox One is a superior product to Xbox 360 in almost every way.

xDealtwithIt3111d ago

So is UK now the world? Because everytime sales for Xbox are good I keep getting told UK isn't.

Doesn't matter how many more the ps4 sold, it still sold on Xbox so there is a group on xbox that do like jrpgs.

Razzer3111d ago (Edited 3111d ago )

barely

Muzikguy3111d ago

After playing a few chapters in this game it feels less like a JRPG and more western to me

Stogz3111d ago

You fanboys need to learn reading comprehension. He specifically said "that market." Try learning to read and understand before posting your typical fanboy garbage, ok?

Muzikguy3110d ago

@Stogz

I disagreed. No idea exactly who you're referring to or anything, but anyone that can't speak in a civil manner gets disagrees from me. No need to jump into a conversation throwing words like fanboy around.

moegooner883110d ago

Course it isn't. Game probably sold worse on XB1 everywhere else in the world, other than the US possibly.

IIFloodyII3110d ago

The UK is the Xbox's second biggest market, so whoever told you it isn't doing good there is lying, it's one of the few places it is.

tinynuggins3111d ago

21% of them would certainly care. The real question is whether thats enough to bring the next one to xbox.

Eonjay3111d ago

Agreed. If I were Microsoft, I would simply offer to subsidize development costs. They might have already done this with 15 and KH3 to be honest.

IndominusRex3111d ago

I dont care and neither do my 15 xbox friends care. We mostly play shooters tbh.

bluefox7553111d ago

It's the same deal with all my friends who own Xbox One, they're mostly shooter fans.

IndominusRex3111d ago

@bluefox755 Yeah. I also play dishonored, darksouls, madden, racers, indie games, etc. Im the only one who plays different games unlike my friends.

Not surprised. The JRPG fans are on PlayStation

IndominusRex3111d ago

True... most of my friends and I play shooters on xbox such as seige, battlefield, overwatch, etc. I have no idea what ff is even about lol.

Whirlwind_Fanfare_083111d ago (Edited 3111d ago )

Damn right! you ain't gonna see that kind of respect of JRPG's in the Xbox community like the PS community.

Lennoxb633111d ago

So I'm guessing the percentages worldwide are 70% to 30%?

JEECE3111d ago

? Xbox is more popular in the UK than everywhere else in the world except the US. US distribution will probably be similar, but everywhere else will be more like 8-10 to 1 (particularly factoring in Japan).

Eonjay3111d ago

As Jeece said its gonna be hard to hold that margin elsewhere because the Xbox is a lot more popular in the UK than anywhere else besides the US. Its possible for it to reach 30% but its gonna need to reach at least 40% in the US... and thats not very likely.

Automatic793111d ago

@Eonjay

Amazon sold out of Final Fantasy on Xbox One. This is in US.

Eonjay3111d ago

@MichaelLito79

Actually its not:
https://www.amazon.com/Fina...

And if you have prime you can get it for only 47.99 so jump on it folks!

G20WLY3110d ago

^Michael, even if that were true, clearly there will be a smaller stock of Xbox games held than PS4. This makes sense due to the amount of systems that have sold, but also - crucially to this discussion - sales expectations based in part on preferences shown by that demographic historically.

Muzikguy3110d ago (Edited 3110d ago )

90/10 at most I'd say

ultimize3111d ago (Edited 3111d ago )

Because Xbone is under performance on FFXV

Eonjay3111d ago

No it doesn't. It is lower resolution but thats not the same thing as performance. You could says its 'crisper' on PS4, but resolution would not account for this kind on lopsided split in sales.

masterfox3111d ago

Damn I wonder why ?, this must be rocket science :P

Six Times When Games Turned Into A Horror Game

Ever play a game a game only to discover at some point it transforms into a horror game? No? Well Netto's Game Room shares six games that do just that!

Immediately thought of the El Dorado zombie dudes in Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune.

raWfodog36d ago (Edited 36d ago )

Not necessarily a ‘horror’ moment, but I remember feeling really tense and anxious when the Flood were first introduced in the original Halo. I never felt more on edge or nervous in that whole game as that moment. I think it was the whole buildup that something terrible was coming but you didn’t know exactly what.

Another non-horror game that had me feeling it was Subnautica. The deep dark depths, and knowing that sea monsters were lurking nearby, had me jumping at every sound.

NettosGameRoom35d ago

That scene where you first see them attack is pretty crazy!

Relientk7735d ago

I remember being scared of the Asylum level in the most recent Thief game from 2014.

always liked 15, but the development was shch a shitshow. it could have been so much more.

but Tabata did a good job with what he had regardless

DivineHand125170d ago

Ff15 was a missed opportunity from square as they transitioned from turn based to real time.

One of the issues is that it was 30 fps. The combat mechanics required precision dodges to activate Noctis teleport ability and it was difficult to do at 30 fps. I am glad they rectified that in FF16. The story and flow also felt like it went through a chopshop similar to how some live service games end up when they are trying to meet a deadline. Those extra episodes they sold as dlc should have been in the maingame.

FF15 is one of the weaker entries in the series.

Z501169d ago

Dodges don't activate the teleport ability. Teleport was R1 + O. Dodge was just the O button. Explain the Black Hood (the item that automatically Dodges for you)

TheNamelessOne170d ago

Ah yes; FF XV.
The beginning of me coming to the realization the series was no longer for me.

Michiel1989169d ago

16 was a lot better, I think 15 was just a big mess with how development went and all. The music though, one of the best in the series, probably the only reason I finished the game.

Cacabunga169d ago

At least FF15 had RPG elements . 16 was just an action game from beginning to end.

Michiel1989169d ago

I rather have a good action game than a bad rpg with 2 button combat

Cacabunga169d ago (Edited 169d ago )

Then call it something else then FF. I got scammed with FF16. Nothing of what i expected it to be.
Even the action is bad in it, especially after the demo section where absolutely nothing happens until the very end.

FF15 isnt a great game but it has some variety at least.

CrimsonWing69170d ago

That initial trailer with the Leviathan fight was the game I wish we got. The actual retail release was watchdogged to all Hell and while there’s enjoyment to be had in the game, it’s such an incomplete product and so many elements feel so slapped together without any cohesion.

Like, don’t get me wrong, I loved fishing, cooking, and the first third of the game, but I much rather they made a story that didn’t feel barely there and the the last third of the game didn’t feel so rushed and unfinished.

Becuzisaid169d ago

Every time a party member left for a period of time screamed future paid dlc. It was horrible.

Imagine Dagger and Steiner making the party go to sleep in Lindblum in FF9 disc 1 and then taking off to Alexandria by foot themselves, but then never playing their side of the adventure in disc 2 when they smuggle her through the South Gate in pickles, take the cable car and fight the Waltz, head to Treno and start the quest to find Supersoft. They just eventually reunite with the main party in the future without explanation of what went on in their adventure.

Or Sephiroth's backstory in the famous Kalm flashback being added as a dlc pack. Same goes for Vincent, Cid, or Yuffie for that matter.

Oh and anything to do with Jenova, the Ancients, Aerith, her mom and Gast, shoved into a 2 hour CG movie or 5 hour anime ministries that's considered required viewing for anything in the main game to make sense or have characters actually be interesting.

I enjoyed FF15 at the time, and finished it, but it's bright spots are marred by a bad development cycle and a worse marketing scheme.

CrimsonWing69169d ago

What’s sad is when I watched a vid on the entire story (that wasn’t properly told in the actual game)!it was really solid and could’ve been one of the most epic stories in any FF. I think a lot of the compilation and cross-media stuff really f*cked it all up.

gurp170d ago

FFXV was underrated in my opinion
I have played all of the final fantasy games, and I loved this game
turn based to me takes too long, I like active battle
the extra dlc and chapters should have been included in the original release, but it is nice that they fixed the game later
