Game Engine Behind Star Wars Battlefront and Battlefield Now VR Capable

Road to VR – It’s been confirmed that the soon to launch 'Star Wars Battlefront X-Wing VR Mission' on PlayStation VR is powered by DICE’s coveted Frostbite Engine, a strong hint that more AAA VR development is on the way from the company.

By gamers current definition, AAA means: money spent(growing up, AAA meant top quality game no matter the price to make it). Anyway..

To assume EA spent millions on VR mission because they spent money buying Dice and invested in the frostbite engine is false. Criterion may have only spent 10 million and not 100 million like GTA to make the VR add on. No one knows. But I doubt EA would authorize that much. There aren't enough headsets on the market to profit off of expensive development yet. The mission should look good, but don't expect battlefront graphics in VR. Maybe on Pro or other VR headsets after the exclusivity ends.

Second, most 3D engines are VR capable with tweaks. Cry engine, unity, unreal, Sony's proprietary software, Activision's, etc. Spending tons of money making an engine doesn't mean they spend that much making a game. Or in this case, mission. But yes, it does mean more possible games in the future from frostbite because it supports VR.

AAA is strictly indicative of budget and production value. Not quality. Always has been.

ApocalypseShadow3093d ago (Edited 3093d ago )

Actually it hasn't. Unless you have been playing since pong and reading magazines like Game fan, Gamer's Republic, when EGM first started, etc.then no. AAA meant quality.

Now gamers assume money spent. It's like saying AAA auto insurance means "budget and production value". It doesn't. It means sign of quality like 5 star restaurant. But in gaming, it was changed to mean how much a developer spends. So now I go with that.

But good try. I wasn't changing its new meaning, I was saying that just because Dice has an expensive engine doesn't mean expensive made games are going to be produced anytime soon.

He's reaching and coming to conclusions based on the engine being vr capable.

Fearmonkey3093d ago

Kind of reaching a bit here. It's great that Frostbyte can do VR but thats no indication of a major push in that direction. I would love a Dragon Age VR experience and a Battlefield VR game as well, but we shall see. A dragon age based Dungeon crawler in VR would be amazing, based in the dwarven tunnels the darkspawn use.

JackBNimble3093d ago (Edited 3093d ago )

Is it realy that much of a reach considering they are reieasing VR dlc ?
It only has to support VR ,that doesn't mean it has to be exclusive only to VR.

Hopefully we will get a relatively lengthy experience with good replayability. COD VR was really good. Visually sharper than Eve Valkery but a little to short (would really want full game).
Off topic, Bound in VR just has too many camera placing issues & game mechanics are really poor. This is first PSVR title to really fail. Battlezone on the other hand is a fantastic strategic arcade shooter but really tough (in a good way) in SP 😉

Need at least a few years for a bigger game like that and that’s probably not enough.

They wanted something cheap.

Azurite7h ago

Remasters can take longer than that.

Dandizzle5h ago

not true, look up star wars first assault.

ZeekQuattro1h ago

Sounds about right. They were rushed while making the second game. Not hard to imagine that trend continued with it's ill fated follow-up.

Interesting article, even with some actual names of the people voicing their thoughts.

I think that we've had enough similiar situations at other studios and publishers already, hell even completely different businesses, to know that OF COURSE it's always about hostile environments at work and the search for rather effortless profits than causing excitment with great ideas.

All deflecting statements, wether from managements or other people in charge, have always, literally always been untruthful. Always.

And it's so silly.

Nothing of this crap causes a nuclear war.

But all the people in charge act like everything is top secret f'n CIA like intel, trying everything to not stand up for their mistakes.

I mean it's pathetic, it really is. In the brand scheme of it all it's truly pathetic.

All of sudden consolidation is now a good thing.

Eonjay10h ago

Right I actually agree with you here. Something doesnt' seem right almost like Sony wants them to look bad because it is trying to takeover. I can't figure out Sony's intentions here but they are already wholely owned so full consolidation means that they can bring in their own management. And honestly this is probably NOT what Bungie wanted.

Obscure_Observer8h ago

"Well the obvious answer to that is that it kinda looks like Bungie is getting torn to shreds without Sony's help. And clearly there is no way Sony is going to spend all that money and not step in to help steady the ship at Bungie because that would be a huge wasted investment."

Exactly!

Phil allowed Pete Hines to run the show at Bethesda and we got Redfall as result. Now that he´s gone and Bethesda reports directly to Matt Booty at XGS, things are definitely getting better!

It´s past time to Sony to take over Bungie and fire that POS Pete Parsons.

Sony has literally given these guys chance after chance, they gave them an extra BILLION to try and keep talent along with telling them to sort their s**t out

What else can they do here? They gave them free reign, extra money and they've spat in their faces.

If they took full control when they bought them they might have been able to salvage them.

TheColbertinator10h ago(Edited 10h ago)

Bungie will be torn to shreds with Sony in full control. Another addition to the cemetery like Zipper or Sony Liverpool

Whatever mental gymnastics you just went through must be exhausting.

It sounds like you have some baggage from Microsoft's acquisition spree.

SimpleDad9h ago

Bungie was indie, so they depended on in game monetization. Sony makes money from other sources: music, movies, psn, ps hardware...

...so devs are hoping by full Sony consolidation they will cut down the monetization part, and make things easier for them...

...but keep in mind, Sony bought them because of their monetization and live service model and design, so much so they tried to make every Sony IP into a live service spinoff.

So I don't see much change in anything, for us consumers, if Sony takes full control.
