Uncharted 4 PS4 Pro vs PS4 1080p Screenshot Comparison: What's in it for You Without a 4K TV?

The PS4 Pro is finally out in the wild, and gamers have to decide on whether to make the jump or stick with their standard PS4. If you have a 4K TV, even better with HDR support, the perks coming with buying the new console are evident, but what if you're stuck with a certainly cheaper 1080p TV or monitor?

The difference is visible, but you'll have to squint.

Looks like a very minor difference it looks the same for the most part

ShadowKnight3085d ago (Edited 3085d ago )

It should look close to the same since the ps4 pro is a minor update and not the PS5. Can't divide the community like the competitor will do and cause so many problems.

sammarshall1023085d ago

When it looks too close then you raise the question of why one should upgrade

Rimeskeem3085d ago

The PS4 pro is not a minor update. But to get the full benefits you will want an HDR 4K display.

Kingthrash3603085d ago (Edited 3085d ago )

Lol...the best way to see the difference is on youtube...watched on pc or your cell phone.
I put out several ps4 pro broadcasts at 1080p 60fps (if the game runs at 60fps) there you can see the difference at 1080 and no hdr.
Look up "kingthrash gaming" on youtube I put out everything from watch dogs 2 to knack. There you can truly see the difference of what to expect to see on a 1080p tv. I'll admit that some games look great even while compressed while some you can barley see the difference.
Watchdogs 2 is the best Ive seen so far imo....nba2k looks great too. Tlou and infamous looks pretty good. R&C I felt looked slightly different. ...but I'll let you be the judge.

I'll be adding shadow of mordor the new ffXV demo and whatever else I can find supported in my library to put up.

At the end of the day you get 4k support. hdr support on over 30 games DAY1. Most of these games were not intended to be ran on ps4p. Going forward games will look much better because devs won't have to do double work (free I might add) when I saw watchdogs 2 you can tell they had more time to make the pro version...it's an open world game and looks fantastic. Right now the old games will still have a dated look and that's totally normal..the more time devs have with this extra boost the better they will look. Keep in mind some game engines were made 30fps in mind...like ratchet&clank for example this could have been 4k60..but thw way the engine was built it would have been pretty hard to do. Ps4p will best be enjoyed with 4k hdr, no question, but you can still see results with 1080p tvs.... Sony was clear about who the pro was aimed at....if you dont have a 4khdr tv but want a substantial difference then dont get a pro, stick woth the ps4. you don't want a pro then don't get one....simple. I know first haND the potential and I have watchdogs 2 and most dont. Watchdogs will be a true showing of what the pro can do right now....Lord know how good games will look a year from now.

BizarroUltraman3085d ago

I disagree, it is for the gamers that want the best. Right now that the PS4 Pro. Do we cry PC ha e better graphical games? No they should they paid a premium for that. Same for the Pro. Its not dividing the community. Just the self entitled gamers dividing it...sorry but its true.

Corpser3085d ago

Pro's GPU is twice as poweful, I hope pro owners have higher expectations

mikeslemonade3085d ago

So we don't know the frame rate yet

XStation4pio_Pro3085d ago (Edited 3085d ago )

its not a minor update. its twice the gpu and an extra gb of ram availability and bandwidth. when you run the ps4 pro on a 4k tv compared to an older 1080p tv, the difference is striking. Its GPU is literally 228% more powerful than the base ps4.

the limitation is older tv tech not being able to show you what the Pro can do. A better comparison test would be to put a 4k HDR tv next to a same sized 1080p tv and have those both running Uncharted 4 on PS4 Pros. You will absolutely see differences.

in addition to that, aliasing chatter disappears, shadows are smoother and softer, the lighting is freaking crazy and the frame rates are rock solid (at least on the games I'm playing). You also have the option in a lot of games to lower the resolution but render better graphics effects and it still gets upscaled back to 4k after that.

When I played UC4 on my Pro attached to my Sony 4k for the first time, my thought was "this looks like PC graphics".

fr0sty3085d ago

Considering the improvements made to the 1080p settings of most PS4 Pro games are things you need to see in motion to fully appreciate, such as higher framerates, these still frame comparisons are kinda pointless.

milohighclub3085d ago

ps4 does hdr and if you have a 4k tv it has an upscaler.... which is all the pspro has to offer. is there anypoint in getting one? was gonna get one in jan but I may just get a better hdr my dx700 is only 8bit so it may be wiser to just upgrade that. by the sounds of it I will get a better upgrade that way..

nveenio3084d ago

I have just recently purchased a 4K TV with HDR (XBR-65x750d), and the upscaler in it is really, really nice. All of my PS4 games look amazing, and even my PS3 games look really, really good. I'm hard pressed for a reason to buy the PS4 Pro until it sees a price drop. (If it had a 4K player, I'd get it right away, because players are still $250+.) So, if someone doesn't have a 4K TV, get that first. You'll be okay with that until the PS4 Pro starts seeing more action and a lower price.

It looks glorious in 4K HDR i can assure you, didn't notice much of a difference whilst playing The Last of Us but UC4 looks amazing.

PersonMan3085d ago

The standard PS4 supports HDR, so that's an invalid reason to buy a Pro.

TKCMuzzer3085d ago (Edited 3085d ago )

@PersonMan
He clearly says 4K HDR., he would notice a big difference over the standard PS4 version. So for him it's a valid purchase.

mike32UK3085d ago

@personman do one. @TKCMuzzer thankfully someone can read :)

Sm311M3Fart3084d ago

@mike32UK

What's your TV? U4 in 4K HDR looks rather disappointing on my Sony 55XD8005 (x8000d). The colours look washed out in hdr, when turned off colours are more intensive but the image looks blurry.
Colours looks better in infamous SS, but there is no much difference when hdr is turned off. Zombies in Spaceland looks good, but haven't tried it with hdr turned off.

therealsasquatch3084d ago

Hardly could call it "glorious" more like meh it's a little sharper and brighter.

Well as someone who upgraded from a PS4 to PS4 Pro. I can tell you I see a difference IMO. Tho I only have a handful of games to go by. The most impressive game I have right now has to be Black Ops 3. Its like a new game character details are awesome! Shadow of Modor and Last of Us the same.

I dont claim to know what the PS4 Pro is doing on 1080p or why Im noticing these things. Ill leave that up to the Pros, haha. But theres a difference and thats what matters to me. Something about downsampling...

Why am I getting disagrees. To me those doing so dont have a PS4 Pro so they cant relate or have no say! Would be better for me if I say I have a Xbox One. Lol..

Btw, just to tick you guys off a little more, since you did me with your petty hating.
Im think of selling my Xbox One to fund a 4k monitor for my PS4 Pro. ou..........

TKCMuzzer3085d ago (Edited 3085d ago )

Battlefield 1 clearly looks better in full 1080p, I noticed the difference straight away, also COD IW single player looks ridiculously sharp in 1080p, I am assuming its downsampled on both games producing such a clear image.

On a side note guys, Youtube 1080p does not do justice, once on a 46 inch TV uncompressed running on actual hardware you can see just how clear the image is. This will be a problem going forward for both manufacturers, people actually seeing true representations of games, internet video is not quite keeping up with the changes at the moment.

girevik3085d ago

I'm actually pleasantly surprised. I've got a 1080p TV and there's a difference in the smoothness of most my games. I noticed it first with Fifa and it's super smooth and looks better.

Someone dismissed it here as a placebo effect but if that's the case I don't care. Can't wait to get my 4k tv.

tikogamer20163085d ago

Got mine yesterday, connected to good old 1080P LED, will upgrade to 4K/HDR soon, as of now I have tried 2 games, Uncharted 4 and Ratchet and Clank, I see no real difference, I mean downsampling helps defining the image a little bit better, but unless you can have both images one by side you can´t tell the difference, I am a PC gamer for the most part so I do notice graphics differences (when they are noticeable)

I know i will get the full benefit out of it once I upgrade my TV, just a piece of advise, if you are a 1080P TV owner and you dont expect to upgrade it soon, don´t buy it (unless you don´t have a ps4) the difference isn´t there, i keep reading articles about the 1080P owners benefits, i don´t know, i just don´t see them, will try a couple more games and share my thoughts again

Ricegum3085d ago (Edited 3085d ago )

Sammarshall102

Stop trolling, I know you have no PS4 due to your trolling history. You need to see it on a 4k HDR tv to see how much improvement there is. It makes me sad that people like you jump to silly conclusions.

Go back over there and wait patiently for your Scorpio.

sammarshall1023085d ago

I never said I had a PS4 now did I lol

And I am waiting for the Scorpio while at the same time enjoying my XB1 with Gears of War 4, Recore, and Forza Horizon 3

richyque3085d ago

There barely any difference. The people that are downvoting are bots which is sad that this site has them just constantly spamming the downvote when people dont see their way.

Aenea3085d ago

To get native 1080p in Battlefield 1 with no or way less frame drops? I dunno, seems good enough for me :)

But I will remember this Sam for next year ;)

Cryptcuzz3085d ago

I have the PS4 Pro and even at 1080P (don't have a 4K HDR yet, waiting for cyber Monday) games that have Pro support is night and day.

The key difference for me is a much cleaner, sharper image. The fact that jaggies or shimmering in pixels are non-existent is what most will notice and may be hard to see in comparison videos.

I don't know about others, but jaggies or pixel shimmering is very distracting.

This is the one thing I always notice in a game like Destiny, for example, and hope it'll get a Pro patch soon. I can put up with a game that has lower quality textures, but when there is jaggies and shimmering happening all over the place, it's distracting and would take away from what would have been a great artistic design.

As a result, playing uncharted 4, even at 1080P, I can tell a huge difference. The game is rendered at a much higher resolution, then down-sampled to 1080P which would explain why the image just pops more now that everything is sharper, with no jaggies or shimmering anywhere. That to me made me appreciate the pro even more.

Games like Final Fantasy 15 (judgement disk demo) is night and day times two! Before I had found out how to enable the higher quality image in the menu, I had thought it was enabled already by default. Played though it and felt, hmm, kinda disappointed with jaggies and shimmering still noticeable and the whole image didn't have that Pro "pop" of sharpness.

Pro note: Turn it on by going to options, below HDR settings, click confirm (circle) and select the top most option for the higher quality option. It'll be as such in that settings (thank you Google translate with the camera option) 1) higher quality image, 2) default 3) return to previous menu

That made the demo went from a softer look with lower-res textures and jaggies/shimmering to a much sharper look, with higher-res (noticeable increase) textures that truly made the demo even better to play though.

TLDR: PS4 Pro even on 1080P with Pro supported games is great. Don't believe me? Boot up a game like Ratchet and Clank. The game was a looker, but on the Pro, it's on a whole different level and right off the bat, clear to anyone who has played that game on the regular PS4, that even on 1080P mode, the Pro provides benefits that can easily be seen and appreciated.

MatrixxGT3085d ago

It's a upgrade but not one worth the upgrade IMO. I just spent $1200 on a PRO and a 50" Bravia 4K HDR10 and I'm having buyers remorse. Maybe when games come out more catered to the PRO instead of just rushing a patch job I'll be more impressed.

Everyone touted 4K! HDR! Woohoo game changer. Well it's entirely overrated at the moment in my opinion. And yes I do have 20/20 vision I'm not blind or stupid.

Artemidorus3084d ago

Well done on telling the truth, most pro fans on here will refuse what's in front of them.

Fishy Fingers3085d ago

Opening the images in separate tabs I had to check the URLs a couple times to see which was which. Minor improvements IMO but U4 already has great IQ so not sure how much difference some downsampling is going to make.

Probably more visible difference viewed on a 42in+ TV but its not exactly night and day.

pcz3084d ago

''What's in it for You Without a 4K TV?''

Bragging rights over people with inferior standard ps4 versions

pyroxxx3085d ago (Edited 3085d ago )

You don't have to squint shit, IQ is on a totally different level,.. That is what downsampling/supersampling alone does,.. IQ was great on PS4,.. but U4 does sometimes feels way too soft, almost blurry.. (because of crazy amount of AA),.. This will look bananas crisp and clean as all hell ,.. (only 2-3 more days for me)

BizarroUltraman3085d ago

Nice Ive been wondering why as I dont have a 4K display and I didnt think it would be this nice of a graphics boost. Happy PS4 Pro owner here...
Weekend is here time to put some hours on this beast!

super_bruno3085d ago (Edited 3085d ago )

I dont see any reason to update if you have a 1080p tv. The difference is minimal. This is for people who want to play games upscaled to 4k resolution on 4k tvs

Errorist763085d ago

The difference is actually quite substantial...no more jaggies and in most cases more stable framerates...especially for PSVR as well. It's just that Uncharted 4 had pretty stellar image quality already.

ShowanW3084d ago

Errorist76...

PS4Pro has a consistency problem... Point Blank...

infamous:SS, Shadow or Mordor, clean up ok...
Uncharted 4: not bad either....

it's a game by game basis... there is NO consistency with the PS4Pro...

i understand Sony feels that they have to tout the "4K" to be able to move units...
But they really need to advertise "Full 1080p/60fps/Ultra" as well

Errorist763084d ago (Edited 3084d ago )

@Showan

They don't need to do anything.

They clearly stated it's up to the developers which is the only sensible thing to do. They can't force anything on them because every game is made differently.

WeAreLegion3085d ago

You mean besides the capability of much larger hard drives and much faster Wi-Fi and streaming 4K content?

BizarroUltraman3085d ago

What are you talking about? 1080p owners should def look into upgrading. Im not a Sony saleman... The Pro does make some of these games look gorgeous.

il-JumperMT3085d ago

My launch PS4 was doing a lot of noise and heat so i upgraded to pro without 4k tv.

ClayRules20123085d ago

What has your experience been like playing the Pro on a non 4K/HDR tv?

Grilla3085d ago

I needed another ps4 so I picked up the pro. Plan on getting a 4k tv later on. Supersampling really improves image quality. Biggest difference I've seen is in tlou. Looks really solid running at 1800p/60fps.

I don't know what they did with the Netflix app, but image quality is really good. Maybe it's my imagination. I did some testing with other devices running netflix and it looks much sharper.

il-JumperMT3085d ago (Edited 3085d ago )

faster loading and ratchet and clank does look more graphical.

Attack on Titan no FPS drops
