How does it compare to previous titles?

While I definitely enjoyed this one, I'd say Crimes and Punishments is still better. I feel this one made too much of an effort to be "epic" which feels a little out of place in a slow-paced detective game. Plus, there's only 4 real cases this time around (case 5 is a more linear, adventure-style affair) compared to 6 from C & P.

I loved the last game. Sadly other reviews state this doesn't hold up.

The 'original' wasn't the first game in the series though.

No one is inferring it is, but it was the first one to debut this generation. And on that token, The Devil's Daughter is a great followup the build upon what its predecessor did right while adding an excellent overarcing narrative that strings the different cases together.
