Will gaming ever go fully controllerless?

Taken from IM PLAYIN:

"From the mouse and keyboard to the humble pad – controllers have always been a part of our gaming experience. But with the release of PS VR, and the development of more powerful VR machines like the Rift, it does make me question if controllers will be around for much longer."

God I hope not. I just want to relax on my couch sitting down to game. Plus sometimes my fingers do things in quick reaction I don't even think about. Just reflex from playing a game. Doubt that would happen with eye tracking controls or whatever they come up with to replace mouse and keyboard or controllers.

GrimmyReaper3160d ago

No. Simple as that.

We have seen it so many times and every time it's the same result.

People call x revolutionary, say it will replace the default, it doesn't and it's forgotten.

For 30 years now, we still game on screens with a box that plays games and a controller or mouse and keyboard to control them.
And that is fine. They are standards for a reason. Because they work. And I've said it before and I'll say it again.

VR goggles limit the developer and player in their game.
Nobody in their right mind will use it for competitive FPS multiplayer.

VR limits developers because now they have to work their game around these goggles rather than actually make the game fun first and foremost.
Because unless it's in first person, why use VR? Why play platformers in VR? Why play card games in VR? Why play driving games in VR? Why play puzzle games in VR unless specifically designed for VR?

Not saying VR and controller-less gaming doesn't have a market, but they will never be the standard because of simple logic.

Aenea3160d ago (Edited 3160d ago )

Your simple logic is flawed!

You said "never" and answered "no", do you still think that in 100 or 200 years we're still gaming with controllers? That we, for instance, can't use our brain to control a game? Things change, and they change rather fast, look how gaming was 30 years ago... Imagine what it is like in 30 years...

There will come a time when VR and regular gaming merge where it isn't giving anyone motion sickness anymore, where there are no controllers anymore to mess things up, that everything works flawlessly. Don't think it's gonna happen in the next 30 years, but am positive things like this won't stay the same forever...

----

As for your questions:
- have you ever tried a racing game in VR? it's fricking fantastic! feels way more natural to me!
- platformers in VR, yeah, I thought that would not be a good idea, the little robot demo game in Playroom VR for the PSVR changed all that, it works wonderfully well and every single person who tried that had the same reaction "this needs to become a full game!" and "all platformers should support VR!".

You also say VR is restricting developers, I get why you said it, but it's also giving developers new ways to do things, they need to think outside the box, they need to try things out and like with that platformer game things can suddenly work really well and surprise you!

And let's be honest, designers are kinda stuck in a rut, VR is shaking things up, they can actually be creative again and try new things, this is a good thing!

VR is here to stay and it's awesome and will only get better!

Both VR and regular flat TV gaming with a controller will eventually be replaced by something else that can give people both the VR immersion and the ease of use of regular gaming. Imagine tech that your brain thinks it's holding a controller or a real gun while in reality you are just lying down on the couch!

_-EDMIX-_3158d ago

Completely agreed.

I think it's a bit Reckless to say something like now or never especially considering no one here knows what gaming is going to be like in 100 years.

For all we know we will no longer even be using displays to experience gaming, it would simply be something that we inject with nanomachines.

Such a concept of gaming would essentially give sight to the blind..

It would give the experience of something in such a fluid natural sense that controlling in the traditional manner that we know of would be archaic and almost a joke.

I'm not trying to go on Minority Report on everyone but I'm just trying to say in some distant future the idea of gaming The Way We Know It is likely not going to be a thing and people will seriously remember this time. No different than we sort of remember Atari or ColecoVision.

Of course there's going to be remnants of that time. Because it's very likely our children will carry on what we enjoyed about this time period of gaming in there's always going to be someone that grew up in our time. That wants to create a game using the traditional or the old methods.

Do we not get simplistic puzzle games every now and then? (Like a lot).

My point is simply that no one could honestly say that gaming with a controller is something that is going to be forever because that is just absolutely ridiculous to claim.

_-EDMIX-_3158d ago

It's not really as simple as that lol.

I'm sorry but you don't know what it's going to be like 100 or even two hundred years into the future to honestly make it sound as if controllers will always be the standard for all we know we could already have some sort of er that's simply some sort of brain implant or something like that lol

You breathe something in and you chemically experience the game lol

How could you say no to a comment on a reality you know not of currently?

GrimmyReaper3158d ago

Well thankfully I'll be dead by then.

Hooking yourself up to machines to take you to a different reality because you used to enjoy just relaxing and playing games?

Matrix was considered ludicrous, now it seems people want that thing. No, not saying "Machines are taking over, get your tin foil hat". But if we get to that level, we really have failed then.

And I love the excuse always. "You just haven't tried VR yet." All three and if that is the way gaming will go? Just no.
What happened to just playing a game? What happened to just having fun?

I don't wanna have motion controls forced in my games just because "immersion".
I don't wanna have some goggles in my face just to game.
I don't wanna have a big setup and create over excessive room just to play.

And counterargument. How can people say yes on a reality they not know currently off. I based my conclusion on what I've seen and what I hear. Besides a few people online (and even then, more and more are changing their opinion) VR is just tech. Something that will be used for inferior games to show off VR because YES! VR DOES limit everyone in the process.

OT
I never said driving in VR isn't more immersive but a person driving in VR will always be worse at driving than someone behind the car, simply because their field of view isn't limited to the driver's seat, netting the person not using VR to have far better awareness of their surrounding. And if they DO change the camera in VR to go behind the car, then again. What is the point of VR? Same applies for any game.

And gaming changed so much in 30 years? How? Everything is indeed more detailed and I am sometimes blown away what devs can do, but even after 30 years, we still play on screens, with controllers or mouse and keyboard. Again, standards because they function. They work.

MFs has been beating their chests over great quarterly results and big profits to shareholders while firing people by the thousands just like Sony.

I wonder if at the top of those rumored layoffs they´ll also cancel upcoming or unannounced games while shutting down more studios as well.

He can’t help help himself, he needs to bring Sony down when the topic involves MS.

"just like Sony"

Gosh you're insufferable, not everything needs to be both-sides'd. Sony's had layoffs, but nothing like what Microsoft has been doing and is continuing to do.

CrimsonWing691d 9h ago (Edited 1d 9h ago )

I mean, no offense, but this is why you’re not some corporate business person running a major corporation. Big profits don’t mean jobs are safe. Do you understand why things like this happen:

Cutting jobs to maintain or increase profitability, especially in underperforming divisions like parts of Xbox like other gaming divisions.

Corporate restructuring and relocating resources for strategic stability in ever changing markets and consumer behaviors.

Investor expectations and optimizing operations to maintain investor confidence. Whatever boosts stock prices and improves future margins.

And there’s many other factors at play. It’s never as simple as business doing well, everyone’s safe. That’s just you not understanding at all how corporations work and have been working since the beginning. This isn’t something that’s specific to Xbox, you can bet your ass Sony and Nintendo do this and if it’s not clear by now, game development is not a stable job nor has it ever been for many. A lot of developers are contractors and guess what happens when a project is done?

Ganif1d 8h ago

Nintendo said they have no plans for layoffs, and you can't seriously claim that the scale of Sony's layoffs most of which involved Bungie which is self managed as even close to the same scale as what Microsoft has done since they purchased Zenimax. And that significantly less layoffs would have happened if those publishers had stayed independent. Keep in mind that much of these layoffs have been due to redundancies specifically related to these buyouts.

CrimsonWing691d 7h ago (Edited 1d 7h ago )

@Ganif

Nintendo:

Sony:

https://gamerant.com/playst...

https://techxplore.com/news...

I don’t think it’s realistic to treat Sony’s layoffs as somehow outside the norm for the industry right now. Even if Bungie is self-managed, Sony’s cuts went far beyond that like Naughty Dog, Insomniac, London Studio being shut down completely, and multiple teams across the globe took hits. These weren’t just minor adjustments.

Nintendo, I had to look up and you’re right. They seem to be an outlier, but rest assured at some point it happens. And even then there’s been layoffs, albeit a smaller amount and contractors.

Would fewer layoffs have happened if studios from acquisitions stayed independent? Maybe. But even independents have been hit hard and look at what’s happened with Embracer’s fallout, or smaller devs like Digic, Roll7, or Volition. This isn’t just a “Microsoft problem” or strictly tied to acquisitions; it’s a broader correction happening across the whole industry, and unfortunately, layoffs are a big part of that process right now.

Ganif1d 7h ago

From your article:

"According to reports, Nintendo of America restructured its testing operations, leading to layoffs of about 120 contractors, part of a strategy for global integration.

Nintendo of America, publisher of iconic franchises like Mario and Zelda, is shifting some contractors to full-time roles for better development integration."

Contractors are not employees, and even if you want to count them as that, it's 120 people vs around 7500 since Microsoft purchased Zenimax.

In an era of game industry layoffs, Nintendo is hiring more people

And as for Sony you're comparing less than 1000 total jobs to an estimated7500

Has the industry faced layoffs, yes, but that still doesn't account for the mass layoffs due to redundancies that was easily predictable, or that fact that at least 1/3 of Microsoft's layoffs and studio closures happened before the industry downturn.

It's like banging your head off a wall, he just can't help himself.

Microsoft can do no wrong, Sony sucks at everything and Nintendo is bigged up because it's less hassle than trying to defend Microsoft all the time

What's going to happen when Microsoft finally turn completely third party, then what?

Sony Faces Class Action in the Netherlands Over Allegedly Inflated PlayStation Store Prices

Mass Damage & Consumer Foundation in the Netherlands has filed a class action against Sony for inflating PlayStation Store prices.

dveio1d 8h ago (Edited 1d 8h ago )

My personal opinion:

Manufacturers and publishers have indeed inflated the industry.

From $700 million development costs for games like Call of Duty, to digital (store) prices for games and DLCs, online multiplayer fees on consoles (why can you play Helldivers 2 online for free on PC but not consoles?) or still preventing sell/lend digitally purchased games.

Sometime in the future, this bubble will collapse.

They should know better, but they just can't help themselves and suck even the last penny out of our wallets.

BeHunted1d 6h ago

Because Sony knows people will be forced to pay those prices for single player and multiplayer games, not everyone prefers PC gaming. Sony also has a monopoly on PlayStation digital games. In 2019, they stopped allowing retailers and game key sellers to sell PlayStation digital games, making them available only through the official PlayStation Store

anast1d 8h ago

The Dutch gov. wants a piece of the pie.

Eonjay1d 8h ago

They should be suing the individual publishers increasing the prices to $80 instead of suing the store. There are plenty of publishers still selling game for like $50 with much success (like E33). But this proves that the publishers are the ones setting the prices.... so again nothing changes because they aren't even going after the main offender. How is suing Sony going to make Microsoft not charge $80 for the next COD? Sony being the number one store in the market doesn't mean that publisher have to charge us an arm and a leg. Again the industry is laughing at us because consumers never get real representation. Just these fake platitudes that are meaningless.

BeHunted1d 6h ago

"How is suing Sony going to make Microsoft not charge $80 for the next COD"

Because Microsoft doesn't have a monopoly, I can purchase Call of Duty at a huge discount from CDKeys or other gaming retailers. The only way to purchase digital PlayStation games is through the PlayStation Store.

djl34851d 5h ago

Weird, I swore GoW, Stellar Blade, Horizon Zero Dawn, TLoU, etc. were on the steam store....uh.....

BeHunted1d 1h ago (Edited 1d 1h ago )

@djI3485

I'm talking about PlayStation games that you can only purchase on PlayStation. I can purchase Steam and Epic games from 3rd party retailers and key stores.

"Sony to stop selling full-game download codes at retailers"

Killer2020UK1d 6h ago

About time. There is zero fair reason why digitally distributed products that you cannot recoup any value when you want to dispose of them, should be priced higher than that of physical copies that entail all of the costs and the benefits of owning.
